Sunnen’s IMTS demonstration of <strong>the</strong> VSS Series<br />

2 S<strong>in</strong>gle Stroke Hon<strong>in</strong>g system will highlight<br />

<strong>the</strong> accuracy, reliability and flexibility<br />

that have made <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e a ma<strong>in</strong>stay of<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> air condition<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

automotive and hydraulics sectors. Accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to Sunnen, more than 100 U.S.-made<br />

VSS mach<strong>in</strong>es have been sold <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

its <strong>in</strong>troduction.<br />

said Mike Burton, Sunnen manag<strong>in</strong>g director,<br />

Asia. “The mach<strong>in</strong>e’s reliability and consistent<br />

accuracy <strong>in</strong> 24/7 production led a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese company to purchase nearly 70 of<br />

<strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>es over <strong>the</strong> past three years for<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g air conditioner parts. We have<br />

also had success with customers mak<strong>in</strong>g turbochargers,<br />

power steer<strong>in</strong>g valves, hydraulic<br />

valves and connect<strong>in</strong>g rods. At IMTS, we will<br />

demonstrate s<strong>in</strong>gle-pass hon<strong>in</strong>g of cast iron<br />

hydraulic valve bodies.”<br />

VSS-2 mach<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>corporate up to six<br />

sp<strong>in</strong>dles to progressively size and f<strong>in</strong>ish part<br />

bores with tools of preset diameter and grit<br />

size. The mach<strong>in</strong>es are suitable for precision<br />

siz<strong>in</strong>g of bores 3.9-50 mm (0.149-2.0") diameter<br />

<strong>in</strong> stamped parts, hydraulic valve bodies,<br />

gears and sprockets, park<strong>in</strong>g pawls, rocker<br />

arms, turbocharger hous<strong>in</strong>gs and similar<br />

parts. Materials <strong>in</strong>clude cast iron, powdered<br />

metals, ceramic, glass, graphite and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

free-cutt<strong>in</strong>g materials.<br />

“The VSS Series 2 sets a new standard for<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle-pass bore siz<strong>in</strong>g efficiency,” Burton<br />

added. “If a part is suitable for s<strong>in</strong>gle-pass<br />

hon<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> VSS-2 provides a level of precision<br />

not available <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r designs. And, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> new touch screen control, <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e is<br />

very operator-friendly. No custom electronics<br />

or special tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is needed and <strong>the</strong> control<br />

is designed to <strong>in</strong>terface with part handl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

automation systems.”<br />

The VSS-2 utilizes a belt-drive sp<strong>in</strong>dle<br />

cartridge with a 724 mm (28.5") stroke and<br />

2-105 mm/sec (2–250 ipm) strok<strong>in</strong>g speed<br />

for <strong>in</strong>creased flexibility with a wide variety<br />

of parts and tool<strong>in</strong>g comb<strong>in</strong>ations. The servo-powered<br />

stroke system provides process<br />

flexibility and is hand-wheel-controlled for<br />

quick setup.<br />

The menu-driven touchscreen control allows<br />

<strong>the</strong> column feed and sp<strong>in</strong>dle speed to<br />

be easily varied throughout <strong>the</strong> cycle. Operational<br />

flexibility is enhanced by <strong>the</strong> use of six<br />

available profiles, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g peck<strong>in</strong>g, short<br />

stroke and dwell, which are easily added to<br />

a setup. More than 100 setups can be stored.<br />

Additional I/O and memory are standard for<br />

ease of automation.<br />

The VSS Series 2 is available <strong>in</strong> three models—<strong>the</strong><br />

84 (eight-station, four-sp<strong>in</strong>dle), <strong>the</strong><br />

86 (eight-station, 6-sp<strong>in</strong>dle) and <strong>the</strong> 64 (sixstation,<br />

four-sp<strong>in</strong>dle)—to meet various midto<br />

high- production needs. Spac<strong>in</strong>g between<br />

sp<strong>in</strong>dles is 190 mm (7.48"). The 7.5 kW (10<br />

hp) sp<strong>in</strong>dle drive provides a speed range of<br />

100–2,500 rpm. Removable, ma<strong>in</strong>tenancefree<br />

sta<strong>in</strong>less steel guard<strong>in</strong>g and electrical<br />

panel mounted to <strong>the</strong> rear of <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e<br />

allow easy access to <strong>the</strong> work envelope from<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e to facilitate tool<br />

change or <strong>in</strong>tegration of custom part handl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

systems.<br />

When properly applied, S<strong>in</strong>gle Stroke Hon<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is a quick, cost-effective method to get a<br />

precise bore size, geometry and surface f<strong>in</strong>ish.<br />

Parts made of cast iron, powdered metals,<br />

ceramic, glass, graphite and o<strong>the</strong>r free<br />

cutt<strong>in</strong>g materials–with L/D ratios up to 1:1–<br />

are suitable for <strong>the</strong> process. S<strong>in</strong>gle-pass bore<br />

siz<strong>in</strong>g is also appropriate for spl<strong>in</strong>ed bores or<br />

longer L/D ratios if cross holes or o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terruptions<br />

are present to allow chip flush<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Sunnen offers a range of s<strong>in</strong>gle-pass plateddiamond<br />

tool<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> VSS-2 for precise,<br />

accurate and consistent bore siz<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r standard features of <strong>the</strong> VSS-2 <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

an electric rotary <strong>in</strong>dex table and solid<br />

tool holder. Available options <strong>in</strong>clude float<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or rigid/adjustable tool holders, 12- and<br />

16-port programmable rotary air unions for<br />

<strong>in</strong>dex output, base coolant evacuation pump,<br />

5-axis subsystems, each with one motorized<br />
