IMTS<br />
North America’s Show of Shows<br />

Accounts vary, but <strong>the</strong> trade show—<br />
or fair, exposition, exhibition—whatever<br />
you call it—has been around<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce approximately 600 B.C. The Old<br />
Testament book of Ezekiel conta<strong>in</strong>s<br />
many references to merchants trad<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
“<strong>in</strong> a multitude, riches with silver,<br />
iron, t<strong>in</strong> and lead (Source: “History<br />
of Trade Shows & Exhibitions,” by<br />
Karan S<strong>in</strong>gh, article<strong>in</strong>spector.com).”<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> 1960s, <strong>the</strong> article cont<strong>in</strong>ues,<br />
trade shows and exhibitions have been<br />
“extensively used as a prom<strong>in</strong>ent part<br />
of market<strong>in</strong>g strategy. Larger amounts<br />
are spent each year on trade exhibitions<br />
than on magaz<strong>in</strong>e, radio and outdoor<br />
advertis<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />
Some 2,600 years later, Ezekiel<br />
would be hard-pressed to recognize<br />
or understand what goes on at today’s<br />
shows. Trade shows—and how <strong>the</strong>y<br />
are presented—cont<strong>in</strong>ue to evolve: new<br />
technologies <strong>in</strong> graphics, sound and<br />
light<strong>in</strong>g, booth construction and much<br />
more cont<strong>in</strong>ue to dazzle. And yet one<br />
th<strong>in</strong>g has rema<strong>in</strong>ed constant s<strong>in</strong>ce those<br />
B.C. days—i.e., captur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hearts<br />
and m<strong>in</strong>ds of new and exist<strong>in</strong>g customers—and<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir wallets.<br />
We talked with a number of major<br />
companies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst of <strong>the</strong>ir plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and strategiz<strong>in</strong>g for IMTS <strong>2012</strong>,<br />
with <strong>the</strong> thought of determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g just<br />
how much th<strong>in</strong>gs have <strong>in</strong> fact changed<br />
for exhibitors regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trade show<br />
experience.<br />
Take social media, for example. How<br />
<strong>in</strong>fluential is today’s text<strong>in</strong>g and tweet<strong>in</strong>g<br />
mania on trade show plann<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
execution? Are customers clamor<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for it, as some media accounts report?<br />
“Social media will not play a significant<br />
role <strong>in</strong> our <strong>2012</strong> IMTS exhibition,”<br />
says Al F<strong>in</strong>egan, Gleason<br />
Corp.’s director of market<strong>in</strong>g. “We are<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to explore <strong>the</strong> use of social<br />
media <strong>in</strong> our market<strong>in</strong>g and promotion,<br />
but beyond our YouTube channel, <strong>the</strong><br />
direction is not clear. And no, our customers<br />
are not clamor<strong>in</strong>g for it.”<br />
“Social media ‘apps’ are becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
more important each year and we<br />
believe will be a significant outlet<br />
along with web, pr<strong>in</strong>t and direct mail,”<br />
Bill Miller, vice-president of sales at<br />
Kapp Technologies, allows.<br />
And at Sandvik Coromant U.S.,<br />
“Social media has been a part of (our)<br />
market<strong>in</strong>g and communications tools<br />
for <strong>the</strong> last several years,” says Rick<br />
Hern, Sandvik project manager. “We<br />
are constantly releas<strong>in</strong>g valuable content<br />
like application tips, events, new<br />
product news and app releases through<br />
our social media channels. At IMTS<br />
this year, we will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to provide<br />
our followers with <strong>the</strong> latest IMTS<br />
news.”<br />
“We have not received a groundswell<br />
of requests from customers to communicate<br />
via social media and as such<br />
we are tak<strong>in</strong>g a wait and see approach<br />
before mak<strong>in</strong>g any major commitments<br />
<strong>in</strong> that regard,” says Sunnen’s Bob<br />
Davis, global communications manager.<br />
“However, we do have a YouTube<br />
channel so customers can view videos<br />
of our hon<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> operation<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ional videos we produce.”<br />
As for IMTS <strong>in</strong> particular—<strong>the</strong><br />
greatest (manufactur<strong>in</strong>g) show on<br />
earth?<br />
Look<strong>in</strong>g at it <strong>in</strong> a solely U.S.-based<br />
context, Gleason’s F<strong>in</strong>egan states that<br />
“I assume this is <strong>in</strong>tended to get at <strong>the</strong><br />
question of IMTS or <strong>Gear</strong> Expo. To<br />
say that one is more important than<br />
<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r is like compar<strong>in</strong>g apples to<br />
oranges. IMTS is <strong>the</strong> largest manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
technology show <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> western<br />
hemisphere, and even though <strong>the</strong> gear<br />
world is only a small part of manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
technology, our customers<br />
expect <strong>the</strong> market leader to be <strong>the</strong>re<br />
with a significant presence.<br />
