NEU/NOW LIVE 2011
Introduction
Esitleme uhkusega kolmandat NEU/NOW LIVE Festivali!
NEU/NOW on projekt, mida korraldab ELIA - Euroopa Kunstiinstituutide Liit, peamine sõltumatu suuri kunstikõrgkkoole ühendav võrgustik. ELIA, millel
2011. a festivali jaoks valis rahvusvaheline
žürii välja 135 projekti kokku 23 riigist; need on üleval veebis. Veebis esitletavate tööde hulgast tehti valik NEU/NOW LIVE Festivali jaoks.
NEU/NOW 2011. a festival toimub osaliselt projekti „NE©XT - New European Creative Talent” raames, seda projekti toetab Euroopa Komisjon.
2009. aastal toimus NEU/NOW Festival Vilniuses ja 2010.a. 2010. a Nantes’is ning 2011. aastal võõrustab NEU/NOW Festivali Euroopa Kultuuripealinn
Tallinn. NEU/NOW LIVE Festivalile valiti 35 projekti 17 erinevast riigist.
NEU/NOW LIVE toimub Euroopa Kultuuripealinn 2011 raames. Eestil on rõõm võtta vastu noori, andekaid ja loovaid Euroopa kunstnikke, ühtlasi on
suur au, et selline läbini rahvusvaheline sündmus toimub just siin.
Ajaloolise kultuurikeskkonnaga Tallinna vanalinn kujutab endast NEU/NOW LIVE Festivalil esitletavale kaasaegsele jauuenduslikule kunstile head väljakutset.
Eesti noortele kunstnikele on festival suurepärane võimalus jagada oma nägemusi kunstist, kohtuda kolleegidega üle terve Euroopa ja sõlmida
uusi partnerlussidemeid.
Lähiaastatel kavatseb ELIA veelgi arendada NEU/NOW suundumusi loovaks ja dünaamiliseks platformiks, mille abil tutvustada suurepärast kunsti ja
mille raames saaksid produtsendid ja kuraatorid näha uuenduslikke ja kvaliteetseid projekte kunstikoolidest üle terve Euroopa.
2012. a NEU/NOW LIVE toimub Portugalis Portos.
Nautige NEU/NOW LIVE 2011 Festivali, nautige Tallinna!
We are very proud to present the third edition of the NEU/NOW LIVE Festival!
NEU/NOW is a project organised by ELIA – European League of Institutes of the Arts, the primary independent network of major higher arts education
institutions. With its 300 member institutions in 47 countries ELIA promotes dialogue, mobility and research, shares best practice, and advocates
the importance of the arts and arts education in our societies. With the NEU/NOW Festival ELIA taps into the potential of over 300,000 art students
representing all art disciplines.
NEU/NOW is an annual festival that brings in hundreds of applications from art schools from all over Europe and beyond. For 2011 a selection of 135
projects from 23 countries was made by an international jury; these are presented online. From the online festival a selection was made for the NEU/
NOW LIVE Festival.
Although NEU/NOW is still in its pilot phase, it has already received considerable attention from the press and the public. Last year it attracted 4500
visitors for the 4 days of the LIVE Festival and approximately 450 visitors and 25,000 hits a day for the online festival. The NEU/NOW 2011 edition is
partly in the frame of the project NE©XT - New European Creative Talent that is supported by the European Commission.
After taking place in Vilnius in 2009 and Nantes in 2010, the 2011 edition of NEU/NOW is hosted by Tallinn, European Capital of Culture. For NEU/
NOW LIVE, 35 projects from 17 countries have been selected for presentation.
NEU/NOW LIVE is organised within the course of the European Capital of Culture 2011. Estonia very much welcomes the presence of young, talented,
creative European artists and is proud to host such a truly international event.
The old City of Tallinn, with its historical cultural environment, will be a challenging setting for the contemporary, innovative art presented in NEU/NOW
LIVE. For Estonia’s young artists the festival is an excellent opportunity to share artistic views, to meet with colleagues from all over Europe and to start
new partnerships.
ELIA intends to further develop NEU/NOW in the coming years into a trendsetting and dynamic platform for the promotion of artistic excellence where
producers and curators can see innovative, high quality projects emerging from art schools from all over Europe.
The 2012 edition of NEU/NOW LIVE will take place in Porto, Portugal.
Enjoy NEU/NOW LIVE 2011, enjoy Tallinn!
NEU/NOW LIVE Tallinn 2011
NEU/NOW LIVE Tallinn 2011
NEU/NOW kunstiliste juhtidena
usume, kolmanda toimumiskorra eel
on Festival muutumas alustavatele
kunstnikele olulisemaks ja peegeldab
paremini seda dünaamilist kunstimaastikku,
kus noored kunstnikud
endale kohta leida loodavad.
Me ei vali töid NEU/NOW Festivalile
ainult selle pärast, et nad tekitavad
meis uudishimu, on loomult
eksperimentaalsed või väljendavad
uuenduslikke õppesuundi - samuti
ei ole festivali eesmärgiks rõhutada
vastandlikke kultuuriväärtusi. Alustavate
kunstnikke vaatenurki esitavaid
festivale on ilmas palju (ning nende
arv aina kasvab). Seda öeldes ei taha
me väita, et NEU/NOW üldse eelnevat
ei väärtustaks, kuid see pole
lihtsalt meie peamine motivaator või
huviobjekt. Me usume, et NEU/NOW
valmidust - töid, mida võiks avalikes
kohtades näidata - kas siis teatrites,
kinodes, kontserdisaalides või kunstigaleriides.
Professionaalne kunstimaastik ei
pruugi olla nii jäik kui kunstikoolides
seda tihti räägitakse. Tegelikkuses
on piirid erinevate kunstivaldkondade
vahel paindlikud ja kergelt
ületatavad. Meie eriline tähelepanu
on suunatud töödele, mis esitavad
valdkonna arusaamadele väljakutse
ja kahtlevad kontseptuaalses
raamistikus. Me oleme Tallinna NEU/
NOW LIVE Festivalil eksponeeritavate
töödega väga rahul. Euroopa ja
muu maailma kunstikoolid esitasid
kõigepealt projektid ja seejärel
läbisid kõik tööd karmi valikusõela,
kus otsustajaks oli igas valdkonnas
rahvusvaheline žürii.
inimesi LIVE Festivalile, tahaksime
kõiki täieliku ülevaate saamiseks üles
kutsuda külastama ka meie veebifestivali.
LIVE Festivali jaoks valituid
töid saab näha kindlates galeriides ja
mujalgi üle linna.
Tallinnas toimuva, kolmanda NEU/
NOW LIVE Festivaliga oleme astunud
sammukese lähemale sellele, et
saaksime realiseerida enda nägemuse
festivalist. Tallinnas on palju
suurepäraseid galeriisid ja muid kohti,
kus valitud töid eksponeerida. Need
asuvad lähestikku, mis loodetavasti
loob tõelise festivalimeeleolu. Soovime
korraldada ühe värvika festivali,
mis moodustaks eraldiseisvate tööde
eksponeerimise asemel ühtse terviku.
Meile meeldis see, et saime valida
töid, mis ei ületa ainult valdkondadevahelisi
piire, vaid esitavad neile
galeriis performance’il ja näha kujutavat
ja lavakunsti koos kinolinal.
Oleme festivali kuraatoritena töödele
hoolikalt parimat eksposneerimiskohta
otsinud, nii et igal tööl oleks
võimalus kõrvalolevaga elavasse
dialoogi astuda. Usume, et nii muutub
festival tervikuna huvitavamaks ja
põnevamaks nii külastajatele kui ka
kunstikele endile.
As co-artistic directors of NEU/
NOW we believe that as the Festival
reaches its third edition, its particular
purpose is becoming both more vital
to emerging artists and more reflective
of the dynamic arts landscape
in which they are seeking to position
themselves.
We do not select work for the NEU/
NOW Festival simply for its curiosity
value, its experimental nature, or as
a means of exemplifying innovative
pedagogies - nor is it intended to
highlight contrasting cultural values.
There are many other festivals (an
increasing number of them) that offer
these perspectives on emergent
work. This is not to say that the works
selected for NEU/NOW will be devoid
of any of these qualities but they are
not our main motivation or concern.
practices. We look for projects that
evidence intelligence, maturity and
professional readiness - works that
are ready to be seen in public venues
- be it theatres, cinemas, concert
halls or galleries.
Professional arts landscapes may
be less rigidly defined than the internal
structures of arts institutions
often suggest. In reality, the borders
between arts disciplines are flexible
and highly permeable. We particularly
look out for work that challenges
the orthodoxy of a discipline and
questions conceptual frameworks.
We are very pleased with the range
of work that is presented in Tallinn
for the NEU/NOW LIVE Festival.
Projects were initially nominated
by individual institutions within and
beyond Europe, with all of the entries
Tallinn - they only partially represent
the significant bodies of work that
are viewable online. Therefore, as
much as we welcome visitors to the
LIVE Festival we also want to encourage
everyone to visit the online
Festival in order to see the full range
of work. The selected works for the
LIVE Festival are shown to their best
potential in the particular venues
and galleries that are available to us
across the City.
With the third edition of the NEU/
NOW LIVE Festival in Tallinn, we
have been able to take a step closer
to realising our vision for the event.
Tallinn offers us a range of excellent
venues and galleries in which to show
the selected projects. The venues
are closely located in a way that will
hopefully generate a real feeling of
discipline boundaries but
actively challenge them. This has
enabled us to “cross-programme”
work into specific venues that will
showcase the relationships between
the different arts disciplines. Attendees
at the Festival will, for example,
have the opportunity to see visual
arts in a performance space, see
performance in a gallery context
and experience both visual arts and
performing arts as film.
We have adopted a curatorial approach
to the festival, seeking to
carefully place each work in the available
spaces, contextualised alongside
other works in a way that sets
up a lively dialogue. We believe this
makes the festival as a whole a more
interesting and exciting experience
for both visitors and artists alike.
Festival peaks asjale lähenema – ja
lähenebki – teistmoodi. Meid huvitab
alguspunkt, koht, kus alustavad
kunstnikud jätavad julgelt kaasaegsele
praktilisele kunstimaastikule.
Me otsime projekte, mis näitavad
tarkust, küpsust ja professionaalset
Kuivõrd me oleme välja valinud
mitmed projektid, mida arvame eriti
tallinlastele huvi pakkuvat, on see
vaid killuke sellest töödemassiivist,
millega on võimalik veebi vahendusel
tutvuda. Seega, kuigi me kutsume
ka aktiivselt väljakutse. Selle abil
saime kavandada tööde ülespaneku
erinevatesse kohtadesse mis toovad
esile kunstivaldkondade vahelisi suhteid.
Festivali külastajatel on näiteks
võimalus näha kujutavat kunsti seal,
kus tavaliselt näeb lavakunsti, osaleda
We believe that the NEU/NOW Festival
should, and does, take a different
approach. We are interested in the
point of departure, where the emerging
artist leaves behind the concerns
of the academy and moves boldly
into the landscape of contemporary
going through a rigorous selection
process by international juries in each
discipline.
Whilst we have selected many
projects, that we think may be of
particular interest to the people of
‘festival’. We are keen to produce a
vibrant festival that forms a unified
whole rather than simply presenting
a collection of individual works. We
were pleased that, in each of the
discipline areas, we have been able
to select works that not only cross
Film
The NEU/NOW Festival gave me the opportunity to gather new and different opinions about my work from the audiences that attended the screenings.
I gained a lot of valuable insights from this experience, which I am using to inform the new short film that I am currently making.
Izabela Kaczmarek
Participating in the NEU/NOW Festival was a great chance to show my work to a wider, international audience, almost immediately after ending my
Diploma! After returning to Warsaw, I became much more confident in my artistic work.
Theatre/Dance
Being selected to show my work in the NEU/NOW Festival increased my credibility as a newly graduated dance-maker. It’s been really helpful to have the
Festival as a credit when promoting the piece to other programmers. Meeting the other artists who participated in the Festival was also very important as
I have continued collaborating with one of them.
Theatre/Dance
Our company enjoyed the interdisciplinary nature of the NEU/NOW Festival and the possibility it offers to see and talk about a wide range of work with
like-minded artists at the same stage of development. It was at the Festival that we met our new collaborator, who became a very important part of our
new theatre production – the NEU/NOW Festival was the ignition spark for our first professional production!
Alexandru-Coral Popescu
Design
The NEU/NOW Festival was an unforgettable experience for me. The time spent together with other artists, sharing different views, made me realize that
even though we were from different countries, we could speak the same ‘language’. The NEU/NOW Festival was just the best experience!
Film
NEU/NOW Festival andis mulle võimaluse saada uut ja erinevat tagasisidet nendelt, kes minu filmi vaatamas käisid. Saadud kogemus on minu jaoks
väga väärtuslik ja praegu mulle uue lühifilmi tegemisel suureks abiks.
Disain
etttevõtmistele välja pakkudes on festivalil osalemise mainimine tõesti kasuks tulnud.
Festivalil kohtusime ka ühe praeguse trupikaaslasega, kellest sai meie uue
teatriprojekti väga oluline osa - NEU/NOW Festival pani aluse meie esimesele professionaalsele etendusele!
Alexandru-Coral Popescu
Disain
NEU/NOW Festival oli minu jaoks unustamatu elamus. Teistsuguse maailmavaatega kunstnikega koos veedetud aeg andis mulle mõista, et kuigi me
oleme pärit erinevatest riikidest, suudame me rääkida sama „keelt”. NEU/NOW Festival oli parim elamus!
Lutz:
Two
Scenes
in 1983
KUNSTNIK: Giles Bailey
ASUTUS: Piet Zwart Instituut,
Willem de Kooningi Akadeemia
RIIK: Holland
KIRJELDUS: Lavale minnes ja taskust
silmatilkade pudelikest võttes selgitab Giles
Bailey, et ta on performance’iks midagi
ette valmistanud. Selle raames võtab ta
pudelikeselt korgi maja, paneb selle suhu,
kallutab pea tahapoole ja tõmbab näpuga
silmaalust nahka allapoole. Ta liigutab pea
taas otseks, võtab korgi suust, paneb selle
pudelikese peale ning keerab kõvasti kinni.
See on kahe samaaegselt räägitava loo
avalöök.
Tom/Lutz: Two Scenes in 1983 kujutab
endast kahte teineteisega pealtnäha mitteseotud
lugu, milles osalevad meesterahvad
ning mis leidsid aset 1983. aastal. Üks
kirjeldab noore tantsija naasmist USAst
Saksamaale, kus ta peab hakkama uue
tantsutükiga tööle; filmitu näitab tema tööd
ühe dokumentaali jaoks. Teine lugu on vanemast
kirjanikust, kes endale silmatilkade
pudelikese korki kurku tõmmates sureb.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Ma töötan väga
palju performance’i ajalugu puudutavate
dokumentaalide ääremärkuste, fragmentide
ja piltidega. Vaadeldes kindlaid sündmusi
- alates kogemata silmatilkade pudelikese
korgi kätte lämbumisest ja ameerika viipekeeles
esitatud tantsudest kuni hälbeliste
masturbatsioonifantaasiate võimalikult tuttaval
viisil ette lauldud keemiliste elementide
jadani –, loon ma monolooge, mis töötlevad
materjali nii nagu see oleks alternatiivne
ajaloo kujundamise viis. Selle performance’i
käigus keskendutakse kahele samaaegsele,
kuid tundub, et omavahel mitteseotud juhtumile,
mis mõlemad toimusid 1983. aastal.
Neid näidatakse koos, et tõstatada küsimusi
meestele omaste nähtuste ning kultuuriliste
pretsedentide kohta.
Two
Scenes
in 1983
ARTISTS: Giles Bailey
INSTITUTION: Piet Zwart Instituut, Willem
de Kooning Academie / Piet Zwart Institute,
Willem de Kooning Academy
COUNTRY: The Netherlands
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Taking the stage
and withdrawing a bottle of eyedrops from
his pocket, Giles Bailey explains that he
has prepared an action to introduce the
performance. This action involves removing
the cap from the bottle, placing it in his
mouth, tilting back his head and pulling
at the flesh just below his eye. He tilts his
head forward again, takes the cap from his
mouth, replaces it on the open bottle and
screws it fast. This becomes the overture to
two stories told simultaneously.
Tom/Lutz: Two Scenes in 1983 gives accounts
of a pair of ostensibly unconnected
incidents concerning male subjects which
took place in 1983. One describes the
return of a young dancer to Germany from
the United States to work on a new ensemble
piece, during the process of which he
is filmed demonstrating one fragment from
the work for a documentary. The other is
an account of an elderly writer’s death from
choking on the cap of a bottle of eye-drops.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: I work largely with
documentary footnotes, fragments and images
from the history of performance practice.
By taking particular instants – these
range from accidental chokings on the caps
of eye-drop bottles and dance numbers
performed in American Sign Language to
derailed masturbation fantasies and lists
of chemical elements sung to a possibly
recognisable tune – I construct monologues
that subjectively rework this material as
an alternative model for the assembling of
history. In this performance two contemporaneous
but apparently unrelated incidents
in 1983 are presented together to pose
questions about the construction of male
subjectivity and the negotiation of cultural
precedents.
The Burdens
of Miss Betsy
KUNSTNIK: Rebecca Helen Page
ASUTUS: Bournemouthi
Kunstiülikooli Kolledž
RIIK: Ühendkuningriik
KIRJELDUS: Preili Betsy on esineja. Ta
tahab teile esineda. Ta esineb teile. Kellele
teie esinete? The Burdens of Miss Betsy on
segu eaalajas toimuvast performance’ist
ja installatsioonist, milles kunstniku
Rebecca Helen Page’i teine mina on preili
Betsy, esineja, kes sünnib tänu vaatajate
tähelepanule.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Mind intrigeerib
see, mis igapäevaelus märkamatuks jääb.
Pealtnäha tähtsusetud juhtumid panevad
minu kunstilistele töödele aluse. Eriti huvitab
mind inimeste kalduvus esineda. Tabamaks
peenekoelisi hetki, mil inimesed ei jälgi
ennast, kasutan ma videokaamerat. Oma
tähelepanekute edasi andmiseks kasutan
ma peamiste vahenditena reaalajas toimuvat
performance’i, salvestatud ja kohapeal
filmitud videomaterjali ning installatsiooni.
Minu ajal põhineva loomuga töö eesmärgiks
on viia inimene reisile, mille kestel ta saaks
aru, milline on tegelikult teda ümbritsev ja
tema seesmine maailm. Minu töö eesmärk
on lõhkuda piirid minu ja töös samaväärse
osaleja ehk vaataja vahel. Tihti saab minust
kui vaatlejast vaadeldav. Ma olen väga palju
endale otsa vaadanud , küsinud, kuidas ma
end tunnen, ja saanud iga viimse nüansini
aru, kes ma olen. Kasutan oma keha, et
väljendada sisemisi reaalsusi. Minu teised
minad väljendavad võimendatult teatud
uskumusi. Ma üritan näidata alternatiivseid
autoportreesid, mis omakorda panevad
publiku enda kohta küsimusi esitama.
Kasutan oma kunstiloomingus identiteeti
ja tegelikkust puudutavaid ideid ning tähelepanekuid.
Ma ei üritagi teemakohastele
küsimustele vastata, vaid proovin näidata,
kuivõrd peenekoelised need on.
The Burdens
of Miss Betsy
ARTIST: Rebecca Helen Page
INSTITUTION: The Arts University College at Bournemouth
COUNTRY: United Kingdom
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Miss Betsy is a performer. She wants to perform for you. She will
perform for you. Who are you performing for? The Burdens of Miss Betsy is a combination of
live performance and installation where artist Rebecca Helen Page adopts the alter-ego Miss
Betsy, a performer activated by the viewer’s attention.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The unnoticed in the everyday intrigues me. Seemingly insignificant
happenings provide substance for my artistic practice. I am particularly interested in the
performative nature of people. I use video recording as a tool to capture different people’s
off-guard, subtle moments. Live performance, recorded and live video playback, and installation
are the main mediums I use to convey my observations. The time-based nature of my
work aims to take the viewer on a journey to realise more about the world that surrounds
them and that is within them. My practice aims to break the boundaries between myself and
the viewer, who is as much a part of the artwork as I am. I often go from being the observer
to the observed. I have increasingly been facing myself, questioning how I feel and realising
the subtleties of who I am. I use my physicality to express internal realities. I become alteregos
who convey certain beliefs in an amplified manner. I aspire to present alternative selfportraits,
which in turn question the audience about themselves. Ideas and observations of
identity and reality are drawn upon within my art. I do not strive to answer the questions that
surround these issues, but intend to reflect the intricacies of them.
Turbulence as
KUNSTNIK: Kristi Kongi
ASUTUS: Eesti Kunstiakadeemia
RIIK: Eesti
KIRJELDUS: Igapäevased, sõprade käest ja
mujalt kogutud lihtsad asjad moodustavad
Kristi Kongi töö Turbulence as a method,
mille raames on need asjad pandud kunstniku
maalidega kõrvuti: tekivad elutruud
ja ettearvamatud, kuid siiski optimistlikud
kombinatsioonid, kus meie elu ja ümbrust
on kujutatud nii sooja ja erksana kui
võimaik.
Tänu võimele märgata ebatavalist ja armastusele
värvikirevuse vastu kujutavad Kongi
maalid vabade seoste võrgustikku, mis
ühtlasi seostub meie mälestuste ja tuttava
ümbruse äratundmisega.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Värv on mu
tõelne kirg. Kui ma alustan maalimist, siis
esmalt loon ma enda ümber väga värvilise
keskkonna. Alles siis saan maalimisega
alustada. Maailm minu ümber on väga
võlts, kuid samal ajal on see nii tõeline kui
võimalik, ja minu uudishimu selle vastuolu
vastu tingiski selle projekti sünni. Projektiga
Turbulence as a method alustasin ma värvikülla
maailma loomist - maailma, mis oleks
tore, positiivne ja soe. Sest värv on minu
jaoks parim viis kõigega hakkama saada.
Ma tunnen ennast värvilises keskkonnas
turvaliselt, samuti on see mu loometöö
jaoks oluline. Mida kirkam, seda parem.
Mul on neid asju enda ümber vaja. Projekti
esimeses faasis kogusin ma asju ja teises
maalisin neid. Mulle meeldib fantaseerida
ilusatest asjadest; minu maailmas on kõik
võimalik. Kunst aitab mul ikka ja jälle armuda
sellesse, mida ma teen. Värv ei peta
kunagi ja armastab mind ka.
INSTITUTION: Eesti Kunstiakadeemia / Estonian Academy of Arts
COUNTRY: Estonia
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Collecting simple objects from everyday life, from friends, from all
around, Kristi Kongi’s Turbulence as a method sets displays of these objects alongside the
artist’s paintings: vivid and unpredictable, yet optimistic, renderings where life and our surroundings
are at their warmest and brightest.
With a particular eye for the unusual and out-of-place, and a love of rich colour, Kongi’s
paintings present a free web of associations to connect with our own memories, reawakening
an awareness of our familiar surroundings.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: My true passion is colour. When I start painting, the very first thing
I do is create a very colourful environment around me. After that I can start painting. This
world around me is very fake, but at the same time it is the most real, and it was my curiosity
about this contradiction that drew me into my project. With Turbulence as a method I have
started creating a colourful world – a nice, positive, warm place. Because for me colour is the
best way to handle everything. I feel safe when my surroundings are colourful, and it’s also
important for my creative process. The brighter the better for my work. I need these things
around me. The first stage of the project was to build up a collection of objects and the second
stage was to paint them. I love to fantasise about beautiful things; in my world everything
is possible. Art helps me fall in love again and again with the things that I do. And colour is
the one who never cheats and always loves me back.
Occidental
Totems
KUNSTNIK: Sebastien Berthier
ASUTUS: Stockholmi Ülikooli Kunsti,
Käsitöö ja Disaini Instituut
RIIK: Rootsi
KIRJELDUS: Occidental Totems on film,
mis tõmbab vaataja vastuolulise kunstniku,
Jacob Epsteini ellu. Kaasaegse skulptuuri
teerajaja ja Henry Moore’i õpetajana nikerdas
Epstein Londonis asuva Lõuna-Rodeesia
Kõrge Komisjoni (praeguse Zimbabwe
saatkonna) hoone fassaadile kaheksateist
kuju, mille kolonialistid hiljem hävitasid.
Sebastien Berthieri viieteistminutilises
videos äratatakse Epstein ellu, ta selgitab
oma töö dünaamikat ja räägib sellest,
kuidas asjad viltu jooksevad. Berthier loob
enda eluloo sündmusi, saatkonna ees
toimunut ja enda vaatenurka kombineerides
hübriidse jutustaja, kes esitab skulptuuride
abil uue nägemuse kolonialismist ja uuskolonialistlikust
mõjust.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Occidental Totems
on osa pikemast sarjast, mis uurib
kunstnike elulugusid. Occidental Totems
toob välja need hetked, mil kunstitöö - keset
poliitilist olukorda, mida kunstnik ei hõlma -
ohustab kunstniku mainet ja mingil määral
isegi tema heaolu. Mida saab kunstnk teha,
kui tema tööde sümbolism on suurem kui ta
ise ja viib ta hukatusse? Film on tehtud BBC
dokumentaalidele omases keeles, Epstein
esineb ise karismaatilise jutustajana ning
esitab sündmusi sama enesekindlalt kui
John Berger ja Robert Hughes oma kuulsates
saadetes. Kuid selle žanri tõe retoorika
ja lineaarsus on hävitatud. Loos on kahtlusi
ja ettekujutusi, ja veelgi enam - need hääled,
mis kostuvad, kui skulptuurid rääkima
hakkavad, on tõesti ootamatud. Selle protsessi
käigus tekivad objektide ja kujutiste
kooslused. Need seavad meie suhtumise
maailma kahtluse alla, tuues välja igapäevaelu
ja popkunsti klišeed (pildid).
ARTIST: Sebastien Berthier
INSTITUTION: Konstfack Stockholm / University College of Arts,
Crafts and Design Stockholm
COUNTRY: Sweden
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Occidental Totems is a film which immerses the viewer in the life
of a controversial artist: Jacob Epstein. Pioneer of modern sculpture and mentor to Henry
Moore, Epstein carved on the façade of the South Rhodesian High commission in London
(now known as the Embassy of Zimbabwe) a set of eighteen statues which were later mutilated
by the representatives of the colonial power.
In Sebastien Berthier’s fifteen-minute video, Epstein is brought back to life to explain the dynamics
of his work and how things run amok. By conflating parts of his own biography, news
reports of demonstrations that occurred in front of the Embassy, and his own personal view
upon the subject, Berthier creates a hybrid narrator who offers a new reading of colonialism
and neo-colonial influence through the life of the sculptural work.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Part of a longer series investigating artists’ biographies, my piece
Occidental Totems highlights moments when an artwork – tangled in a political climate that
the artist does not encompass – threatens the reputation and to some extent the well-being
of the artist. What can an artist do when the symbolism of his works overshadows him and
draws him into a personal turmoil? Grounding the film in the visual language of the BBC
documentary format, Epstein takes the place of the charismatic narrator and recalls the
events in a self-confident manner, as John Berger or Robert Hughes did in their infamous
broadcasts. But the linearity and the rhetoric of truth in this genre is subverted. Hesitations
and disillusions inhabit his story, and further on, unexpected voices appear when the statues
seem to reply.stemming from this process are assemblies of objects and images. They question
our reaction to the world by reinvesting the clichés (pictures) of our everyday lives and of
popular imagery.
of_pixels
of_pixels
KUNSTNIK: Richard Schwarz
ASUTUS: Viini Tarbekunsti Ülikool
RIIK: Austria
KIRJELDUS: Richard Schwarzi of_pixels on installatsioon, mis raamib aega. Kummagi kahe
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Kuidas kujuneb meie suhtumine aega? Üks meie probleemidest on
see, et me ei oska seda kujutada. Aeg on olemas, sest me mõtleme sellele - ja seetõttu on
ajaga seotud palju mõtteid ja filosofeerimist. Osad arusaamad on ilmsed, enamik neist on
kujunenud põlvkondade jooksul ja on seega osa meie (alateadlikust) igapäevaelust, kuid juba
see peaks tõstatama küsimusi. Üks varasem näide sellest, kuidas aja mõttest ja meist endist
aru saada, oli pika säriaja kasutamine: töötajad panid lambid pea, käte ja jalgade külge, ning
nende liigutused salvestati. Tehtud pildid võimaldasid aega „näha”. Kiirus on jätkuvalt seotud
lootusega rohkem aega võita.
Kuid äkki kasutaks seda ideed, et aeg möödub ja igast hetkest jääb järele natuke erinev
teave? Pikslid tunduvad olevat sellises kontekstis töötamises hea „materjal”, sest suuresti
nende abil me tänapäeval maailma tunnetamegi.
ARTIST: Richard Schwarz
INSTITUTION: Universität für angewandte Kunst
Wien / University of Applied Arts Vienna
COUNTRY: Austria
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Richard Schwarz’s
of_pixels is an installation artwork that puts a
frame around time itself. Two large TFT screens
hang vertically, with a webcam standing in front
of each screen that captures footage of the onlooker
and slowly projects their image – partial,
pixellated – onto the screen. Like a digital long
exposure, the picture on screen contains more
than one moment, revealing things which are
still and showing only traces of moving objects.
Schwarz’s work is a comment on our relationship
with time and speed, linked to questions surrounding
the nature of a digital image.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: How do we get our
understanding of time? One of the problems we
face is the difficulty of picturing it. Time exists
because we think of it – and that makes time
something that has a lot of thought and philosophy
behind it. Some of the ideas it is linked to are
obvious, and most of them are developed over
generations and are part of our (unconscious)
daily life – but that fact itself should raise a few
questions. One example of an early attempt
to grasp the meaning of time and understand
ourselves was the use of long exposure: workers
put lamps on head, hands and legs and their
movements were recorded. The resulting pictures
made ‘time’ visible. Speed is still linked to
the hope of gaining more time.
So what about using the idea that time passes
and every moment leaves behind information in a
slightly different way? Pixels seem a good ‘material’
to work with in this context, because most of
our cognition nowadays is taking place via them.
A programmed long exposure renders pixels
from pictures taken over a period of time into one
frame. So of_pixels is not showing the present as
we know it, but a present that lasts longer, and if
you want to become part of the shown ‘present’
you need to take at least thirty seconds to appear
in the delayed, digital image.
KUNSTNIK: Filippa Hanzon
ASUTUS: Stockholmi Ülikooli Kunsti,
Käsitöö ja Disaini Kolledž
RIIK: Rootsi
KIRJELDUS: Filippa Hanzoni projektis You Gonna Find What You Search on kolm kaamerat
asetatud silindri ümber. Kaamerate abil, mis on ainsad vahendid, mis võimaldavad struktuuri
sisse näha, saab publik jälgida sees toimuvat, kuid osa nähtavast toimub reaalajas, osa on
varem salvestatud.
Silindri sees harjutab muusikute trio... midagi - nad on jõudnud teose, mis ei näi kunagi haripunkti
saavutavat, keskpunkti, ning järk-järgult hakkavad nende liigutused viitama millelegi
universaalsemale: kolm inimest suhtlevad läbi ühise tegevuse, nad avastavad midagi, mida ei
saagi määratleda. Kolme muusikut sisaldav silinder muutub ajakapsliks, kus seesmine ajatelg
vastanduvad. Ma kogun erinevaid hetki, arvamusi ja ootusi, panen need kokku ja loon uusi
reaalsuse süsteeme ja tajusid. Minu töö You Gonna Find What You Search loob keskkonnast
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In Filippa Hanzon’s
You Gonna Find What You Search
three cameras are positioned around a cylinder.
Through the cameras, which are the
only means of seeing inside the structure,
viewers can observe what happens inside,
but some of what they see is in real-time,
some of it recorded.
Inside the cylinder a trio of musicians rehearses... something – they’re in the middle of a
performance which never seems to reach a climax, and slowly the opaqueness of their
actions begins to reflect something more universal: three people communicating through a
joint act, exploring something undefined. The cylinder, containing the trio, becomes a sort of
time capsule where the passage of time inside is staggered versus time outside. Time and
space are called into question for the viewer, who has no idea exactly what is taking place in
the present moment.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: By exploring structures and patterns I try to understand how structures
are related, what they stand for and what they become when they face each other. I
collect various fragments of situations, opinions and expectations, put them together and
convey new systems and perceptions of reality. My work You Gonna Find What You Search
creates a space in the room, separated from its surrounding environment, and works with a
concept that deals with questions about power, control, time, location and collaboration.
By building environments where there are alternatives to the current social norms, I provide
suggestions for new behaviours that are not as restrictive as the present status quo. I try,
through the environments I create, to show that things might be slightly different in another
RIIK: Poola
KIRJELDUS: Inspireerituna Philip Larkini kuulsast luuletusest „This Be The Verse”, on Wojtek
Pustola Hole delikaatne uurimus enda isaliini pidi kulgevast sugupuust.
Mul peaks
see olema.
Tees on staatiline, moodustatud
ja enda struktuuris kinni nagu pronkskuju. See on seotus. Nii minu kui ka publiku jaoks. See
oleks justkui stuudios käies endale püünise üles panemine. Minu meelest on kunsti korral
järjekindlusetus hea. Töö ilma lõbuta on igav. Ei, aitäh.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inspired by Philip Larkin’s famous poem This Be The Verse,
Wojtek Pustola’s Hole is a discreet investigation of the artist on the grounds of the paternal
lineage of his own family. Anxiety, fear, loneliness and repetition are mapped on a golf course
and its symbolic, looped eighteen-hole structure. In a relay race, the individual becomes part
of a collective self and must receive an inevitable load of patrimony – inherited whether they
want it or no, whether they are conscious of it or not, whether they have the courage to deal
with it or not.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: I have no statement. Or as Melville’s character Bartleby the Scrivener
used to say: ‘I would prefer not to.’ I know artist statements are common in the art world. I
know I should have one. I know it seems useful. I know it may seem arrogant or ignorant to
refuse to have one. Nevertheless I don’t want to issue a statement about what my art aims
for. If I did, I would feel a need to fulfil the statement. A statement is static, accounted for,
closed in its structure like a statue cast out of bronze. It’s a bond. For me as well as for the
audience. It would be like putting down a snare during a studio visit. I consider inconsistency
a good thing in art practice. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. I’d prefer not to.
KIRJELDUS: Carolin Weinerti gravüüride
seeria kujutab viit hukkamisstseeni, mille
tarvis on kasutatud motiive vanadelt ja
ka kaasaegsetelt fotodelt. Igaüks neist
jutustab julma loo sellest, kuidas mehi
„seaduslikult” tapetakse ja nende ümber
on enda arvates õigust mõistvad inimesed,
kuid kui vaadata gravüüre päris lähedalt,
võib näha igal neist üht pisikest kassi,
täpselt sellist nagu lapsepõlves peitepiltidelt
pingsalt otsisime. Weinerti peenekoelised
mustvalged gravüürid tõstatavad küsimuse
ohvri ja kurjategija rollide üle - pidades
silmas piltidel kujutatud inimesi, kuid ka
neid, kes kunstiteost vaatavad.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Nagu paljud inimesed
tänapäeval, kasutan ka mina vabalt
Internetti. Ma leiad sealt vastuseid kõikidele
küsimustele, suhtlen inimestega üle kogu
vahendusel asju, mida ma alati näha ei
taha. Seega panen ma enda võimet peaaegu
väljakannatamatuid asju näha pidevalt
proovile. Internetist leiab ka pilte hukkamise
meie ühiskonna anomaaliaid. Ma tahtsin
läbi huumori muuta hukkamise intiimseks,
mis tegelikult õudust isegi rohkem esile
tooks. Kunstnikuna on mind igasugune
COUNTRY: Germany
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Carolin Weinert’s
series of etchings depicts five execution
scenes, using motifs drawn from historical
and contemporary photographs. They tell
cruel stories – of men being ‘legally’ killed,
surrounded by people who serve up their
own idea of ‘justice’ – but if the viewer can
bring themslves to examine these etchings
more closely, a tiny cat can be spotted in
each of them, just like in the pictures we
used, as children, to stare at in search of a
hidden animal. Weinert’s delicately crafted
black-and-white etchings raise questions
about the roles of victim and perpetrator
– for the people in the pictures, but also
among those who view the artwork.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Like so many
people nowadays, I’m at home on the
Internet. I answer every question through
it, I make contact with other parts of the
world through it, but above all it makes me
see things I don’t always want to see. My
own capacity to witness almost unbearable
things is thereby under permanent strain.
The executions were also found on the
Internet. The cat in the etchings ridicules
the anomalousness of our society. Through
humour I wanted to put a very intimate layer
on the executions that even enhances their
terror. In my artistic practice I’ve always
been examining the role of humour in all
its diversities. For me it is crucial that the
viewer can have a laugh at my art. Even if it
is a very bitter one.
Hantise on 150 väikest puumaja asetatud
maha korduva animatsiooniprojektsiooni
ette. Puumajade mõõtmed on 20 x 20 cm,
ja üksteise otsa laotuna moodustavad nad
väikese linna. Taustal jooksev animatsioon,
mis iga kolmekümne sekundi tagant
kordub, kujutab suuri, rippuvaid, lõputult
edasi-tagasi kiikuvaid moondunud rindu.
Korduva animatsiooni keskel lastakse lendu
üks vares. Lind lehvitab tiibu ja üritab saada
kas või tükikesegi enda kohal rippuvast
pehmest lihast. Siis aga langeb vari üle
pisikeste majade...
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK:Hantise’i kokku
panemise mõte tekkis mul pärast seda,
kui olin olnud kõrbesaarel - see oli leebelt
öeldes kummaline ja segadusseajav kogemus.
Tavaliste orientiiride puudumine andis
mulle Hantise’i jaoks ainest, kuna mul tekkis
vastupandamatu soov ehitada midagi linna
sarnast, tuttavat mikrokosmost.
Hantise muudab inimesed ootusärevaks,
sest selle erinevad osad on justkui mehhanismi
osad ja tundub, et kindla eesmärgiga
kokku pandud. Kuna ta sarnaneb väga
lavakujundusega, võivad vaatajad sellest
väga erinevalt aru saada - seal on esiplaan,
tagaplaan, mitmed mõõtmed; see on väike
teater.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In Emilie
Duserre’s installation 150 small wooden
houses are set on the ground before the
projection of a looped animation. The
wooden houses are eight inches by eight
inches, piled up to form a miniature city.
In the background, the animation, running
only thirty seconds before it repeats, shows
huge, deformed breasts hanging down
and swinging back and forth in perpetual
motion. Intermittently, in the heart of this
animated loop emerges a crow. The bird
flaps its wings, turns and tries to catch or
just pinch the soft flesh above it. Then, a
shadow looms over the tiny houses...
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: This narrative device
of Hantise came to me following a stay
on a desert island – an experience which,
to say the least, was strange and confusing.
The absence of familiar landmarks there
provided the material for Hantise as it left
me with an urge to build a semblance of a
city, a microcosm of the familiar.
Hantise makes people expectant because
its different parts are arranged like the parts
of a mechanism – as though for a specific
purpose. Close almost to a theatrical set
design, the piece offers several ways for the
viewer to interpret it – there is a foreground,
a background, several scales; it’s a small
theatre.
Die-Cut – Configurational Compositions For
Camera on sürreaalne seeria usutavatest,
šablooni järgi välja lõigatud lapsepõlveasjadest.
Piltide keskmes poseerivad
kummaliste nägudega modellid, nad
justkui hõljuks kuskil reaalse ja kujuteldava
maailma vahel, kus inimesed, loomad ja
elu ise on kõige ideaalsemad. Just nagu
pildid muinasjuturaamatutes. rõhutavad
Paappa fotod igatsust lihtsate (kuid siiski
ebareaalsete) lugude järele, kus inimhing on
kõige kaunim ja parem, samuti näivad pildid
kahtlevat maski loomuse üle ja väitvat, et
inimesed peidavad hirmud ja ebakindluse
näo taha ära...
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Minu töö olemus
seisneb soovis tunnetada asju ja kujutada
seda osaliselt ka oma piltidel. Die-Cut –
Configurational Compositions For Camera
puhul oli minu eesmärgiks vaigistada kõik,
mis pildistatava inimese ümber oli, ja muuta
nende inimlikkuse kõige vaiksem osa nähtavaks.
Maskide abil said modellid tuua välja
oma varjatud poole ja alustada sillaehitust
tõelise maailma ja kujuteldava šabloonmaailma
vahel. Ma uurisin, kuidas portreteerida
turvalisust, väsimust ja ängistust,
ja teisalt, kuidas tekitada rõõmu, sõbralikkust
ja hetki igapäevaelust. Teisisõnu, ma
uurisin, mida tähendab olla inimene? Suurendatud
šabloonid ja igapäevased esemed
loovad modellidega kahasse konfiguratsioonilisi
kooslusi, mis on minu mõttemaastiku
dioraam.
Configurational Compositions For Camera
surreal, make-believe scenes have been
built from die-cut scraps of childhood
belongings. Models pose amid the pictures,
their faces obscured, seeming to hover
between the real world and an imagined
reality where people, animals and life in
general are at their most idealistic. Just
like the illustrations in fairytales, Paappa’s
photographs express a longing for basic
(yet unrealistic) stories of what is best and
most noble in the human spirit, yet the
pictures seem also to question the nature of
the mask, and to suggest that we use our
faces to hide fears and insecurities...
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The essence of my
work is the desire to sense the presence of
objects and capture some part of that in my
photographs. In the series Die Cut – Configurational
Compositions for Camera my
purpose was to quieten everything around
the individual I was photographing and
make the more silent part of their humanness
visible. By using masks the models
were able to bring out the hidden side of
their selves and to begin to build a bridge
between the real world and the imagined
reality of the die-cut scenes. I explored
how to portray security, fatigue and anxiety,
but on the other hand how to evoke
joy, friendliness and moments of everyday
life. In other words I asked, what is it like to
be human? The enlarged scraps and daily
objects, combined with the models, create
configurational compositions, dioramas of
the sceneries of my mind.
kuidas meile, inimestele, loodus paistab:
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ann Kristin Einarsen’s
The solar followed by the lunar followed
by the solar followed by the lunar is a sculpture
consisting of a porcelain rabbit, a dead squirrel
and a wooden base. The porcelain rabbit
is standing on its feet with its eyes closed,
gently holding the dead squirrel. The white
porcelain rabbit, with its naive and almost
cartoonish visual language, represents how
we as humans perceive nature: cute, innocent
and with human emotions. In contrast: a real,
dead baby squirrel, thrown from a tree by its
own mother.
The solar followed by the lunar followed by the
solar followed by the lunar is about nature and
its course. About the perishable and the degradable.
About how the natural processes are
unsentimental in their essence. Unlike us – we
who dwell on the past.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Kujutava kunstnikuna
inspireerib mind loodus ja minu
tööd keskenduvad inimese ambivalentsele
suhtele loodusesse. Norralastena näeme
end inimestena, kes elavad kooskõlas
loodusega, kuid igapäevaelus liigume me
järjest kaugemale ja kaugemale teadmisest,
et me ise oleme loodus ja osa looduse
lõputust lagunemisprotsessist. Minu põhiline
töövahend on portselan.
seetõttu on sellest saanud minu projektide
oluline osa.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: As a visual artist I
am inspired by nature and thematically my
projects point to man’s ambivalent relationship
with nature. We Norwegians see ourselves
as a people in close harmony with nature,
but in everyday life we are further and further
removed from the awareness that we are
ourselves nature and subject to nature’s
relentless processes of degradation. My main
material is porcelain. Partly because of its
visual qualities, like surface, colour, tactility
and transparency, but also because of its
ability to go from malleable material to petrified
and final expression. This finality and
resistance to natural degradation intrigues
me and has become an important aspect of
my projects.
of them goes about it in a different way:
we see a poet, a martial arts master, three
muses, dancers, a dying tenor, geisha
girls, foxes dressed up in black suits... With
acoustic music, poetic words, dance and
surreal scenes, NO THEATRE’s No Concert
is a collage of thoughts and acts that hypnotises
and involves the public in a strange,
exaggerated world which is nonetheless,
in some deep way, intimately familiar. It is a
performance which has sadness as well as
absurd elements. It is an intimate, mourning
comedy.
No Concert won the audience prize as
the best performance for small stages in
the theatre festival Theatre spring 2010 in
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: No Concert is
a theatrical movement created by eight
actors on the Master’s degree course at
the Lithuania Music and Theatre Academy
alongside young director Vidas Bareikis,
who is studying for a Theatre Direction MA
at Theatre V. Meyerhold Centre (TMC) in
Moscow, Russia. The financial and spiritual
situation in Lithuania is getting more and
more difficult, and this has led to a huge
emptiness in the theatre scene. We at
NO THEATRE found a solution. We went
out onto the streets, theatres and houses
hoping to find a contemporary audience,
hoping to understand them and make a
connection with them. Through short improvised
gigs in public spaces, actors can
alleviate life’s monotonous routine, but in all
cases it is the spectator who has the right
to interpret.
KOREOGRAAF JA TANTSIJA:
Nadia Tsulukidze
ASUTUS: Amsterdami Kunstikool, DasArts
RIIK: Holland
KIRJELDUS: Ready for Love or Seven Fragments
of Identity on autobiograafiline teos,
mis põhineb Nadia Tsulukidze poliitiliste
sündmustega seotud elul. Tsulukidze sündis
Nõukogude Liidus, kuid õppis läänes,
tänu sellele saab ta enda elulugu kirjeldades
joonistada enda kogemust arvesse
võttes geograafiliselt katkendliku joone.
Selle etenduse tarvis on Tsulukidze
kasutanud dokumentaalmultimeedia teatri
strateegiaid. Luues killustatud lugu enda
identiteedist, on ta kasutanud videoid,
fotosid, tantsu ja teksti. Ta on ühekorraga
autor, esineja ja teose biograafiline materjal,
ning Ready for Love or Seven Fragments
of Identity otsib nende kolme rolli vahel
seoseid, et luua muutlikku ja killustatud
identiteeti. Lavateos on kollaaž, mille
osadeks on „Guruli marseljees”, supimullid,
1980. a Olümpiamängud, „Samaia”, vanaisa
Brežnev armastuskirjad ja poliitika.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Ma alustan alati
enda töid isiklikust kogemusest - mul on
alati mingeid küsimusi. Mu töö on jätkuv
eneseavastus ühiskonnas. Minu suurim kirg
on inimkeha. Ma näen seda kui keerukat
tunnete, mõttemallide, hingamise, närvide,
lihaste, tajude, mälestuste, peegelduste,
segaduste, vastuolude ja sotsiaal-poliitiliste
üksuste keerulist organismi. Nende koostisosade
vahelised seosed huvitavad mind.
Minu töö on interdistsiplinaarne. Kombineerides
erinevaid vahendeid nagu liikumine,
pilt, tekst ja heli, olen ma huvitatud sellest,
mis on nende vahel. Igaüks on neist eraldiseisev,
kuid erinevad kombinatsioonid
nendest - see, mis on nende vahepeal
- ongi ettekujutuse, peegelduste ja tõlgenduste
alus.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ready for Love
or Seven Fragments of Identity is an autobiographical
piece, based on stories from
Nadia Tsulukidze’s own life which have
been linked with political events. Tsulukidze
was born in the Soviet Union and educated
in the West, allowing her to draw a
geographically fragmented line when constructing
a personal history by reflecting on
her own historical context.
For this performance Tsulukidze employs
the strategies of documentary multimedia
theatre, using videos, photos, dance and
text to construct the fragmented narrative
of her own identity. She is at once
the author, the performer, and the piece’s
biographical material, and Ready for Love
or Seven Fragments of Identity interrogates
the relations between those three roles in
the process of creating an identity as a fluid
and fragmented body. On stage, the piece
is a collage of ‘Guruli Marseillaise’, soup
bubbles, the 1980 Olympics, ‘Samaia’,
Grandpa Brejnev, love letters and politics.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: A starting point
for my artistic work is always my personal
experience – a question about or confusion
with whatever I am busy with at that moment.
My work is a continuous exploration
of myself in relation to society. My biggest
fascination is the human body. I see it as
a complex organism of emotions, thinking
patterns, breath, nerves, muscles, senses,
memories, reflections, confusions, contradictions
and social-political constructions.
I am interested in the relations of those
components.
My work is interdisciplinary. Combining
different media such as movement, image,
text and sound, I am interested in connections,
the space in-between. Each of these
media has independent characteristics, but
the specific combination of diverse media
and elements – the space in-between – is
the initial space for imagination, reflection
and interpretation.
The
Miserable
Thing
KOREOGRAAFIA JA ESITUS: Fernando
NÕUANDJA: Katarina Bakatsaki
ASUTUS: Amsterdami
Rahvusvaheline Teatrikooli Festival
RIIK: Holland
KIRJELDUS: Fernando Belfiore’i lõpetamata
ja poolikute stseenidega, tugevate tonaalsete
muudatuste ja äkiliste katkestustega
The Miserable Thing ühtaegu aktiveerib ja
katkestab vaatajate ettekujutust. Vaadates,
kuidas keha võib liigutuste kvaliteedi ja
pikkusega muuta kogu ruumi ja mõttemalle,
juhib see mittelineaarne etendus meid uute
taju ja tähenduse, aja ja ruumi käsitlusviiside
juurde.
Liikumine ja füüsilised võimed on viidud
äärmustesse: kõik keskmine on eemaldatud
ja üleminekud ei ole lihtsalt vajalikud.
Sellisel moel muudavad paradoksaalsus
ja vastuolulisus teose keeruliseks. Seejärel
vaadeldakse liikumist kui viisi, mille abil
reaalsusega manipuleerida, ning mängida
aja ja ettekujutuse, paranoilise valveloleku,
võõrandumise, allasurumise, vägivalla ja
võimuga.
The Miserable Thing uurib selliste eraldiseisvate
elementide nagu Carl Orffi Carmina
Buranast tuttav „O Fortuna”, rikkaks saamise
(või isegi miljonäriks saamise) hüpnootiliste
juhendite, diskomuusika, nn õnnetoova
kassi, popp- ja raadiomuusika kollaaži abil
tajusid lõhkuva ja normaalsusest kõrvale
kallutava hallutsinatsiooni olemust.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Samal ajal samas
kohas olla on võimalik/võimatu.
The Miserable Thing on kriitiline kollaaž materjalist
ja lõpetamata sündmustest, mille eesmärgiks
on ergutada vaatajate mõttemaailma/
fantaasiat ja kaasata publikut uuel viisil. Esitus
näitab, kuidas mõistetakse kehadevahelist
suhtlust.
Tants märgistab sotsiaalset keha ja seda,
kuidas ühiskond keha alla surub ja fetišeerib.
Teisest küljest ülistatakse seksuaalenergiat,
kuna see muudab inimesed teiste olemasolust
teadlikuks ning paneb teiste üle mõtisklema.
The Miserable Thing on tantsuetendus, mis
otsib ja näitab kaasaegse keha pingeid, võõrandumist
ja allumist.
Choreography and performance:
Advice: Katarina Bakatsaki
INSTITUTION: International Theatre School
Festival Amsterdam
COUNTRY: The Netherlands
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With unfinished
and half-finished scenes, strong tonal shifts
and sudden cuts, Fernando Belfiore’s The
Miserable Thing simultaneously activates
and displaces the audience’s imagination.
Looking at how a body can change a whole
space and shift states of mind, through its
quality and duration of movement, this nonlinear
piece guides the audience towards
new ways of dealing with perception and
meaning, space and time.
Movement and physicality are taken to
extremes: middle tones are cut out and
transitions simply aren’t necessary. In
this mode, paradox and contraction bring
complexity to the piece. The movement
is then explored as a way of manipulating
reality, playing with time and imagination,
paranoid alertness, alienation, repression,
violence and power.
Bringing together a collage of such disparate
elements as the O Fortuna from Carl
Orff’s Carmina Burana, hypnotic instructions
for achieving wealth (or even becoming
a millionaire), disco music, a ‘fortune
cat’, and pop and mass multicultural songs
played on the radio, The Miserable Thing
investigates the notion of hallucination
as it subverts perceptions and perverts
normality.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: To be in the same
space and in the same time is (im)possible.
The Miserable Thing proposes a critical
collage of material and unfinished events
which intends to trigger the audience’s
mind/imagination and displace the audience
through new forms of engagement.
Performativity comes to expose a practice
of understanding living bodies in relation
with living bodies.
The dance considers the social body and
how our body is repressed and fetishised
by society. On the other hand, sexual energy
is celebrated as it brings awareness
and reflection in otherness.
The Miserable Thing is a choreography that
researches and exposes the intensities,
alienation and submissions of the contemporary
body.
KIRJELDUS: Ruth Schultzi Jeffrey Eugenidese
1993. a ilmunud romaanil The Virgin
Suicides („Süütud enesetapud”) põhinev
töö taasloob viie Lisboni õe enesetapud.
Ühe aasta jooksul võtavad viis pealtnäha
normaalse keskklassi perekonna tütart
endalt elu. Naabripoisid on jälginud nende
kasvamist nii imetledes kui ka samal ajal
kinnisidee küüsis viibides, ja etenduse
killustatud lugu ongi nende küsimustele ja
mälestustele üles ehitatud.
Ruth Schultzi lavateoses lõimuvad sensuaalse
interpretatsiooni läbi näitlemine ja
tants, mis vaheldumisi etendavad ja taasloovad
tüdrukute lugu. Viiest tantsijannast
ja viiest meesnäitlejast koosnev interdistsiplinaarne
ansabel käsitleb loo traagilisust
õrnalt ja - vahel alla surutud – naeruga.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Kas meie subjektiiv-emotsionaalne
arusaam maailmast
on tõeline? Kas me saame subjektiivsest
kirjeldusest või kujutusest tuletada objektiivse
tõe? Meie arust ei ole Jeffrey Eugenidese
romaanis tõeliste ja kujutletud tegelaste,
mäletamise ja kogemise vahel olulist vahet.
Tantsu ja näitlemise abil oleme leidnud väga
hea viisi, kuidas neid vaevumärgatavaid
struktuure tõlgendada. Kuigi laval kasutatakse
kahte erinevat keelt, näitame me tugevat
sidet nende kahe vormi/grupi vahel - ja
näib, et suhtlemine või tõeline arusaamine
on vahel tõesti võimalik. Lõpuks jäävad alles
noorte meeste küsimused – nende ülesanne
on nüüd leida elu mõte. Oma lavateoses
keskendume perekondades ja ühiskonnas
tihti esinevale üksindusele ja võõrdumisele,
illusioonide purunemisele ning lakkamatule
ja edutule võimaluste otsimisele (mis võib
läbikukkumise korral olla nii traagiline kui
ka koomiline), ning elu mõttele - ilma sellele
otsest tõlgendust andmata.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Based on the
1993 novel by Jeffrey Eugenides, Ruth
Schultz’s The Virgin Suicides reconstructs
the suicides of five Lisbon sisters. Within
the course of a single year, five teenage
daughters of a seemingly normal middleclass
family take their own lives. The
neighbourhood boys have watched them
grow up with a fascination bordering on
obsession, and it is the boys’ questions
and memories that build up the fragmented
storyline of the performance.
Ruth Schultz’s staging interweaves acting
and dance in a sensual interpretation that
alternately enacts and transfigures the
story. The interdisciplinary ensemble, made
of five female dancers and five male actors,
approach the tragedy of the piece gently
and with a – sometimes stifled – laugh.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Is our subjective
emotional construction of a world real?
Can we deduce an objective truth from a
subjective account or depiction? To us, in
the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides there is no
distinction in importance between real and
imaginary characters, between remembering
and experiencing. With the combination
of dance and acting we found a strong artistic
translation for these subtle structures.
Although there are two separate languages
used on stage we show a close relation between
the two forms/groups – and sometimes
communication or real understanding
seems to be possible. But what remains in
the end are the questions of the young men
– it is up to them to examine the purpose
of life. In our staging we concentrate on the
solitude and strangeness often found within
one’s own family and society, on disillusionment
and the incessant and unsuccessful
quest for serendipity (which in its failure can
be tragic or comic), and on the meaning of
life – without giving a straight interpretation.
Pram Tak Mir
KUNSTNIK: Sander Saarmets
ESINEJA: Adrian Rannut (viiul)
ASUTUS: Eesti Muusika- ja Teatriakadeemia
RIIK: Eesti
KIRJELDUS: Pram Tak Mir on loodud viiulile ja varem salvestatud elektroonilisele ning
videoelemendile. Muusikaline materjal on pärit autori praeguse kodu kõrval asuvast trammipargist.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Kuigi noodistamine on läänemaailma klassikalise muusika arenguloos
Pram
Tak Mir’i video-noodikiri võimaldab kuulajatel muusikalisi protsesse reaalajas jälgida ja seega
kogeda muusikalist vormi kui tervikut.
Performer: Adrian Rannut (violin)
INSTITUTION: Eesti Muusika- ja Teatriakadeemia /
Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre
COUNTRY: Estonia
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pram Tak Mir is a solo piece for violin and pre-recorded electronics
with a video score, its musical material derived from the sounds of a tram park next to
the composer’s current place of residence. The graphic video notation of the composition
is perhaps as important as the audible performance, and one of the ideas that directed the
visual approach of the piece was to make it possible to see the musical form of the work as
a whole. Another idea, perhaps a slightly rebellious one, was to create an academic piece of
music without concrete notes and rhythms.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Although notation has played a mayor role in the development of
Western classical music, the score itself is seldom seen (or understood) by anyone besides
the performers. This leaves the audience in a somewhat disadvantaged position, which is
especially true when a new piece is being performed and listeners are left with only their
previous experiences and knowledge. Having said that, I believe the gap between contemporary
music and its audience is partly caused by having no reference points or guidelines
with which to analyse the new and perhaps unfamiliar musical forms. The video score of
Pram Tak Mir lets listeners follow the musical processes in real time and grasp the musical
form as a whole.
KIRJELDUS: Anna-Liisa Elleri projekt
keskendub tuhandete aastate vanusele
traditsioonilisele Eesti pillile, kandlele.
Projektis Kannel Revisited on improvisatsioonilisel
live-kontserdil pill ja elektroonika
ühendatud, nii et tekitatav heli ja karakter
on inspireeritud kandle tämbrist. Esineja
Anna-Liisa Eller uurib erinevaid mängimistehnikaid
kasutades kandle helipaletti, ning
paneb sämplimist ja loopimist kasutades
digitaalinstrumendid elavalt suhtlema.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Kannel on traditsiooniline
Eesti muusikainstrument, mille
ajalugu on mitu tuhat aastat pikk. Minu
meelest on kandle tämber suurepärane,
ning seepärast otsustasin ma rajada töö
kandle repertuaari asemel hoopis selle
helile. Just tänu tema resonantsele helile,
mahlakale häälele ja imeilusatele ülemhelidele,
oli eesmärk improvisatsioonil ja
live-elektroonika abil avastada ja välja tuua
selle suurepärase pilli rikkalik ja vibreeriv
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Anna-Liisa Eller’s
project revolves around a traditional Estonian
instrument that’s thousands of years old:
the kannel. In Kannel Revisited, the instrument
is combined with electronic sound
in a live improvisatory concert that derives
its sound and character from the timbre
of the kannel. The performer, Anna-Liisa
Eller, investigates the kannel’s sound palette
through extended playing techniques,
sampling, looping, and modifying the sound
in a live interaction between analogue and
digital instruments.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The kannel is a
traditional Estonian instrument with thousands
of years of history. I am fascinated
by the timbre of the kannel, so instead of
approaching the instrument through its
repertory I tried to base our work purely
on the kannel’s sound. Starting from the
resonant sound of the object, it’s rich voice
and beautiful overtones, my purpose is to
discover and bring out the richness and
vibrations of the sound palette of this magnificent
instrument through free improvisation
MUUSIKUD: Maartje Meijer,
Zola Mennenöh, Artis Orubs, Tobias Nijboer
ASUTUS: Amsterdami Kunstikool
RIIK: Holland
KIRJELDUS: Tegu on täiesti omalaadse
ja nüüdisaegse vaatega fuugalaadsele
kirjutusviisile. Maartje Meijeri teos saab
alguse ideest, et meloodia on alati põhiline,
ning et harmooniad on kombineeritud
meloodiate tulemus. Polüfoonilise muusika
ajalugu on rikas - sinna kuuluvad näiteks
sellise helilooja nagu Johann Sebastian
Bachi teosed - enne fuuga kirjutamise
tehnikate enda kasuks pööramist ja selle
teose kirjutamist uuris Maartje kontrapunkti
vägagi põhjalikult.
NSTILINE EESMÄRK: Johann Sebastian
Bach teadis seda juba sajandeid tagasi:
polüfooniline muusika võib olla uskumatult
võimas! Kui me tõlgime selle meetodi tänapäeva
keelde, saame öelda, et tegu on
pelgalt meloodiate kirjutamisega. Seal ei ole
ühtegi iseseisvat harmooniat või meloodiat
- üks asi tuleneb alati teisest. Neid ei tohi
kunagi vaadelda kui kahte eraldiseisvat asja.
Sellise idee orkestratsioon võib samuti olla
väga värskendav: miks peaks kontrabassi
mängija alati basse mängima? Miks ei võiks
lauljad akordide järgnevusi lauldes koostööd
teha?
Laulukirjutaja, helilooja ja mitme pilli mängijana
olen kirjutanud holistilise vaatega teose
The Way You Write Your Fugue, ja leidsin
projekti jaoks ka täiuslikud muusikud. Tulemuseks
on kogum intuitiivseid ja puhtaid
teoseid, kus kõik hääled on võrdsed ja kus
kõik võivad võtta üksteise rolli...
INSTITUTION: Amsterdamse Hogeschool
Amsterdam School of the Arts
COUNTRY: The Netherlands
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A completely
different and modern take on fugue-like
writing, Maartje Meijer’s composition begins
from the idea that the melody is always
‘leading’ and that harmonies are the result
of combined melodies. The history of polyphonic
writing is rich – including the work
of such composers as Johann Sebastian
Bach – and for this piece Maartje made a
close study of counterpoint before taking
the established techniques of the fugue in
her own direction.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Johann Sebastian
Bach knew it centuries ago: polyphonic
writing can be incredibly powerful! If we
translate the method to the modern day you
could say it is all about writing melodies.
There is no such thing as a separate harmony
and melody – the one thing always
comes from the other. They should never
be treated as two separate things.
It can be very refreshing as well to take
this idea to orchestration: why should the
bass player always play only the bass? Why
shouldn’t vocalists work together to sing
chord progressions?
As a songwriter, composer and multiinstrumentalist
I’ve created the composition
The Way You Write Your Fugue with this
holistic view, and I even found the perfect
musicians to support the project. The result
is a collection of intuitive and clear compositions
where all the players and voices
are equal to each other and can take each
other’s role...
The Bridge of Music: from Lithuania to
Estonia on elav kammermuusika kontsert,
Jurgis Juozapaitis (vioola) ja Ugnė Antanavičiūtė
(klaver).
Grupp on silmapaistev oma eripärase muusika
ja erakordse repertuaarivaliku poolest.
Kasutades keel- ja puhkpille ning klaverit,
loovad nad maagilise õhkkonna.
Trio töö põhineb osaliselt ka rahvusvahelisel
koostööl ning kunstiliste kogemuste
vahetamisel. ”Muusikasild” on kontsert, mis
ühendab paljude Lääne-Euroopa rahvaste
erinevaid maitseid, värve ja tavasid.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Igaühel on oma
igapäevaelu: ärkamine, hommikusöök, töö,
pood, kodu, televiisor, voodi... siis heliseb
jälle äratuskell ja sama rutiin algab otsast
peale. Selline elu on kui ratas, mis veereb,
kuid mis ei jõua kuhugi. Kontserdi mõte
on anda inimestele võimalus olla omaette,
täiesti enda jaoks.
Alati kiirustades ei märka me tihti meid
ümbritsevaid suurepäraseid asju. Tunnise
kontserdi jooksul ei tee me peale istumise,
nautimise, unistamise või muusikale
keskendumisele midagi. Meie eriline kava
- spirituaalse romantismi, energia ja 20.
sajandile iseloomuliku muusika ühendamine
- hõlmab emotsioone kurbusest rõõmuni,
võlub meid lossidesse, randadele, ja lilli täis
aedadesse. Meie eesmärk on tutvustada
publikule head, intelligentset ja harva mängitavat
muusikat (trio repertuaar on väga
ebatavaline) ja aidata neil pärast päevarutíini
lõõgastuda.
The Bridge of Music: from Lithuania to
Estonia is a live chamber music concert
performed by Vytautas Giedraitis (clarinet),
Jurgis Juozapaitis (viola) and Ugnė
Antanavičiūtė (piano).
The group are distinguished by their original,
attractive sound and unusual repertoire
of compositions, creating magical atmospheres
from simple combinations of string,
wind and piano.
The work of the Trio also upholds ideas
of international cooperation and the importance
of artistic exchange and in this
concert the Bridge of Music connects the
different and individual tastes, colours and
traditions of the many populations of West
ern Europe.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Everybody has
an everyday life: wake up, breakfast, go
to work, shop, go home, TV, bed… then
the alarm clock goes off and it’s the same
routine all over again. This life is daily race
that goes nowhere and has no winners,
and the idea behind this concert is to give
people a reason and a chance to be only by
themselves, for themselves.
When we are always in a hurry we miss a lot
of the amazing things around us. But in the
hour of the concert all we do is sit, relax,
dream – or concentrate on the music. Our
unique programme – mixing spiritual romanticism,
energy, and characteristic 20th
century music – captures emotions running
from sorrow to happiness, conjuring
up palaces, beaches, and gardens full of
blooming flowers. Our goal is to introduce
the public to great, intelligent and rarelyheard
music (the musical repertoire of our
trio is very unusual) and to help the audience
relax after their daily race.
või ruumi - see on nii vahend kui ka kiht,
mis kaht süsteemi ühendab.
Lucie Beauvert’i Interfaces, weavING for
a body-experience of space loob liidese,
vahelüli, mis ühendab anatoomilise keha
teda ümbritseva maailmaga. Ta loob kiudude
abil dekonstruktsiooni analüüsi, pannes
proovile nii kaalu, struktuuri kui ka tekstuuri.
Ümber pööratud ehitusplatside ja elukohtade
värvipalett kohtub looduslike lõimetega
meie riietes - see on liides meie kehade
perimeetril.
Eksperimenteerides kompositsiooni, skulpuuri,
kanga ja videoga, mängib Beauvert
erinevates distsipliinides moest arhitektuurini
- kuid siiski juhib tema tööd inimkeha
kogemus ja seda ükskõik millisel kujul.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Algaja tekstiilikunstnikuna
koosneb minu töö käsitööst,
kunstist ja teooriast, ja on seega tehnika,
kompositsiooni ja kommunikatsiooni
süntees. Minu tööd saavad alati alguse
ümbritsevast keskkonnast, see annab mulle
nii inspiratsiooni kui ka ideid teostuseks.
Teemad valin ma geomeetriast, liikumisest,
identiteedist... allikaid, mida mu ettekujutus
inimkonna ja selle olemuse osas lähemalt
uurima hakkab, on lõputult. Minu eesmärk
on luua mitte ainult tervikuid tooteid, vaid
kutsuda publikut minu reflektsiooni ja
tööga liituma. Minu huviks, mis tuleneb
minu tajudest ja ideedest, on pakkuda uusi
vaatenurki tekstuuridele ja struktuuridele,
luues nii alternatiivseid sensatsioone ja
reaktsioone. Kui minu looming väljendub
valdavalt kangas, siis selle projekti erinevates
faasides esineb ka teisi väljendusviise,
nagu näiteks joonistamine, maalimine,
fotograafia või video.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An interface is
any surface that connects two materials or
spaces with the function of interaction – it
is both a tool and a layer which connects
two systems.
In Interfaces, weavING for a body-experience
of space, Lucie Beauvert creates
an interface, an in-between that links the
anatomical body to its surrounding world.
With a series of woven pieces she draws
an analysis of deconstruction, challenging
scales, structures, textures. The colour
palette of building sites – living spaces
turned inside-out – meets the natural fibres
of the clothes we wear – an interface at the
perimeter of our bodies.
Experimenting with composition, sculpture,
textile crafts and video, Beauvert’s work
strides across diverse fields from fashion to
architecture – but whatever the form, it is
the extent and nature of our body’s experience
that guides the work.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: As an emerging
textile designer my practice combines
crafts, arts and theory, and is a synthesis
of technique, composition and communication.
The starting-point always comes
from the society that surrounds me, which
is both the context of inspiration and the
domain of application for my designs. The
themes I choose to work with borrow notions
from geometry, movement, identity...
endless sources that bring human gender
and its context under the magnifying glass
of my imagination. I work with the intention
of not only delivering finished products, but
of inviting an audience into my reflection
and process. Stemming from my own perception
and ideas, my interests aim to offer
new perspectives on textures and structures,
generating alternative sensations
and reactions. If my creative output mostly
appears as woven materials, the different
stages of a project nonetheless bring in
other forms of expression such as drawing,
painting, photography or video.
KUNSTNIK: Lauri Hirvesaar
KIRJELDUS: Lauri Hirvesaare projekt
Electric Cargoscooter on mõeldud postiljonidele,
kulleritele ja kõigile, kes igapäevaselt
linnaliikluses hakkama saama peavad.
Maailm meie ümber on kiiresti linnastunud
ja linnad oma suurte liiklusummikutega kasvavad
väga kiiresti. Ummikutesse jäänud
inimesed kaotavad autodes istudes tunde
oma väärtuslikust ajast. Väikeste kaherattaliste
liikumisvahenditega on läbi liikluse
minna parem, kuid nendega kaasneb tihti
üks ja sama probleem - suured kompsud
tuleb maha jätta. Electric Cargoscooter
lahendab selle probleemi.
Rolleri eriline ja paindlik neli-ühes raam
võimaldab seda kohandada vastavalt
olukorrale - kahel rattal, kandes vaid juhti,
on ta kiire ja kergesti juhitav; kolmel rattal
on ruumi ka pagasile ja roller on stabiilsem.
Kolmerattaline disain on eriti tõhus, kui
transporditav last on raske, samuti on ta
suurepäraseks abivahendiks postiljonidele,
kes peavad postkastide juurde minekuks
tihti rolleri pealt maha ronima: nad ei pea
tegema ühtegi lisaliigutust rolleri jala peale
toetamiseks.
Hirvesaare kargoroller kuulub uude
“väikemopeedi” kategooriasse, mis hõlmab
endas turvalisust ja kasutuse lihtsust.
Vastavalt Eesti seadustele ei ole juhiluba
kargorolleriga sõitmiseks vaja: roller on
võrreldav jalgrattaga. Rolleri mootor on
keskkonnasõbralik elektrimootor, mis tänu
oma kaasaegsetele akudele kujutab endast
head alternatiivi kohmakatele autodele ja
väsitavatele jalgratastele.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Teema leidmine oli
lihtme - maailm minu ümber januneb uute
lahenduste järele, ning ummikud, tõusev
kütuse hind ja uued keskkonnamäärused
sunnivad firmasid leidma praeguste liiklusvahendite
kõrvale uusi lahendusi. Samal ajal
areneb tehnoloogia väga kiiresti ja iga päev
tuleb turule uusi ja paremaid akusid ning
palju muudki. Disaineri ülesanne on selgitada
välja kõige kriitilisemad probleemid ja
leida neile võimalikult innovatiivne lahendus.
Kogu tööprotsessi käigus püüdsin ma hoida
kõik tasakaalus, et lõpptulemus oleks selline,
mida on lihtne juhtida, mis on praktiline
ja silmale ilus vaadata. Ja otse loomulikult
tahaks ma näha seda rollerit kunagi ka
tänavatel.
Estonian Academy of Arts
COUNTRY: Estonia
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lauri Hirvesaar’s
project Electric Cargoscooter is designed
for mailmen, delivery men and anyone else
who needs to travel through busy cities on
an everyday basis.
The world around us is increasingly urbanised
and cities with their massive traffic
jams are growing fast. People in cars stuck
in traffic jams lose thousands of hours of
valuable time in total. Smaller two-wheeled
vehicles are a good way to get through the
traffic, but most of them have the same
problem – you can’t take any large baggage
with you. Electric Cargoscooter sets out to
solve this problem.
Its unique and flexible 4-in-1 frame allows
it to adapt to different situations – on two
wheels, carrying just the driver, it gives
good manoeuvrability and speed; on three
wheels there is ample baggage space and
increased stability. The three-wheel design
is particularly useful for transporting heavy
cargo, and for mailmen who need to step
off the scooter frequently to walk to the
mailbox: they needn’t release any stands to
precent the vehicle from falling over.
Hirvesaar’s cargoscooter fits into the new
‘small moped’ category, which brings
together safety and ease of use. According
to Estonian law the driver doesn’t need to
have a driving licence: the scooter is comparable
with a bicycle. The engine for the
scooter is also an environmentally friendly
electric motor, which with modern batteries,
affords a good alternative to clumsy
cars and exhausting bicycles.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Finding the theme
was easy – the world around me clearly
asks for new solutions to its problems, and
traffic jams, rising fuel prices and new environmental
restrictions are forcing companies
to find alternatives to current vehicles.
At the same time technology is developing
extremely fast and there are new and better
batteries and other components coming
on to the market every day. The designer’s
task was to find the most critical problems
and solve them with the most innovative solutions
available. During the whole process
I tried to keep everything in balance so that
the result would be easy to ride, practical
to use, and nice to look at. And, of course, I
want to see it on the road some day.
KUNSTNIK: Zorko Huljic
ASUTUS: Karel de Grote
Ülikooli Kolledž
RIIK: Belgia
KIRJELDUS: Zorko Hujlic loob Function Enters
Form’iga mängulise taaskombinatsiooni
disaini, mis aitab leida juba olemasolevatele
asjadele uusi kasutusvõimalusi. Nähes
end pigem “määratleja” kui “disainerina”
uurib Zorko enne külgnevate uute tõlgenduste
tegemist alguses asjade visuaalseid
ja praktiisi assotsiatsioone, sõnamängude
abil loob ta kunsti, mis on lõbus, riukalik ja
kummaline - kuid praktilisus jääb.
Kuna disain on peamiselt kontseptsioonis,
siis Function Enters Form’iga käib kaasas
kasutusjuhend, mis kirjeldab mõningaid
prototüüpe.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Tootedisain on
aeganõudev; see on kui rännak, leidmaks
sobivaid osi ja materjale. Reklaamitausta
omava inimesena järgmise distsipliini juurde
liikudes näen ennast pigem prototüübi
ehitajana. Vahel läheb kuid, et ehitada õiges
mõõdus osi, ja see paneb mind nii tootja,
kes otsib vajalikke materjale, kui ka idee
arendaja positsiooni.
Minu teadmised tootearendusest (materjalidest,
tehnikatest ja muust sellisest) ei
ole just väga suured, enamik minu töödest
on tehtud juba valmis osadest. See on
võrreldav Duchampi “valmis toote” ideega.
Tema teos “Purskkaev” on valmis pissuaar,
mida Duchamp esitles kui kunstiteost.
Pissuaari uueks funktsiooniks saab olla
kunstiteos, samas tema nimi ”Fountain” (e
k “Purskkaev”) viitab transfunktsionaalsusele.
Minu tehtud tööd keskenduvad pigem
funktsionaalsusele: nad on kasutatavad
“valmistooted”, mis on tõepoolest kasutamiseks
mõeldud.”
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In Function Enters
Form Zorko Huljic brings a playful spirit
of recombination to designs that find new
functions for existing objects. Seeing himself
more as an ‘assigner’ than a ‘designer’,
Zorko explores the visual and practical
associations of objects as a starting point
for lateral reinterpretations, making use
of wordplay and punning to produce art
that’s funny, sly and strange – but keeps a
practical use.
As the designs lie mainly in conceptual
ideas, Function Enters Form is accompanied
by a manual styled as an instruction
leaflet, that illustrates a small number of
prototypes.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Product design
takes time; it is a quest for suitable parts
and materials. By venturing from my training
in advertising into another field, I see myself
more as a prototype builder. It often takes
months to build made-to-measure parts,
and this forces me into the position of a
producer, sourcing existing materials and
parts, as well as a concept developer.
Given a lack of knowledge in the field of
product development (materials, techniques
and the like), most of my works are
made out of prefabricated parts. This is
comparable to Duchamp’s notion of the
‘ready-made’. His work Fountain is a prefabricated
urinal, appropriated by Duchamp
as a work of art. The function passes from
the urinal to the work of art, while the title
Fountain also refers to trans-functionality.
The products I have manufactured are
more focused on functionality: they are
functional ‘ready-mades’ that are intended
for real use.
ARTIST: Agnes Steiner
INSTITUTION: Universität für angewandte
University of Applied Arts Vienna
COUNTRY: Austria
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Based on the
contemporary opera by the composer
Gene Pritsker and the writings of the philosopher
William James, Agnes Steiner’s The
Opera ‘Varieties of Religious Experience’—
a Performance on Pages creates a dramaturgically
treated, graphical visualisation of
the opera’s music and text, complementary
to the existing libretto. It allows the viewer
and listener to experience a self-contained
visual representation, beyond the opera
stage that both accompanies and complements
the music.
The album package consists of two books,
a map and the audio CD of the opera. The
first book is comprised of individual booklets,
each issue matching the respective
musical movement in the opera. The original
scores are collected in a second book.
A special navigation system connects the
two books with each other, and the map
gives a simple introduction to the opera’s
plot and to the relations between the protagonists.
It also serves as an overview of
the content of Book 1. Almost all photos
used in the visualisation were produced
with a digital pinhole camera, a reference to
the discrepancy between the opera’s contemporary
music and the historical libretto.
The typographic concept takes up the main
subject of the opera – the transcendental
experience – and uses it to transform the
format of the text by gradually overlaying
two typefaces. The opera is currently being
recorded in New York and will be released
in September 2011.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Art and music are
in a constant process of reinvention, which
steadily creates new opportunities for
combination and synthesis… I kept asking
myself if a music theatre piece like an
opera, could be set beyond a stage. I think
the answer to that is yes, and so I created
a new format.
KIRJELDUS: Agnes Steineri The Opera
»Varieties of Religious Experience«—a
Performance on Pages põhineb kaasaegsel
Gene Pritskeri loodud ooperil ja filosoof William
Jamesi kirjutistel, ning see loob libreto
kõrvale dramaturgiliselt käsitletud graafilise
visualisatsiooni ooperi muusikast ja tekstist.
Nii saavad vaatajad ja kuulajad näha laval
iseseisvat visualisatsiooni, mis muusikat nii
saadab kui ka täiustab.
Komplektis on kaks raamatut, kaart ja
CD ooperi muusikaga. Esimene raamat
koosneb eraldiseisvatest voldikutest, millest
igaüks sobitub ooperi vastava muusikalise
liikumisega. Teises raamatus on toodud
ooperi originaalnoodid. Kahte raamatut
ühendab spetsiaalne navigatsioonisüsteem,
ja kaart annab lühikese ülevaate ooperi
sisust ja peategelaste vahelistest suhetest.
Ühtlasi annab kaart lühikese ülevaate
esimesest raamatust. Viitamaks ooperi
kaasaegse muusika ja ajaloolise libreto
lahknevusele, on peaaegu kõik visualisatsioonis
kasutatud pildid tehtud digitaalse
pisiavakaameraga.
Tüpograafiline idee kannab ooperi põhiideed
- transetsendentaalne kogemus
- ja kasutab seda, et samm-sammult
tekstiformaati kahe kattuva kirjatüübi abil
edasi kanda. Praegu salvestatakse ooperit
New Yorgis ja plaat tuleb välja 2011 a
septembris.“
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Kunst ja muusika
on pidevas taasloomises, ja nii tekivad
järjest uued võimalused kombineerimiseks
ja sünteesiks... Ma mõtlesin, et kas ooper
kui muusikateatri osa võiks ulatuda lavalt
kaugemale. Ma arvan, et see on võimalik, ja
nii lõingi uue formaadi.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Zuzana
Šišovská’s Collection of relaxation interior
accessories takes a hard look at bag seats
and their impact on human health. First
presenting the process by which the bags
are made – looking at their use of advanced
materials and comparing the products of
diverse manufacturers – Šišovská then applies
this theoretical research in designing
a new collection of interior accessories for
sitting, lying, playing and relaxing.
The goal of the project has been to create
accessories which have multiple uses and
functions, and the designs incorporate the
advice of professional physiotherapists. The
resulting collection aims to meet the needs
and expectations of today’s modern era.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: The primary goal
of my project was to research material and
filling behaviour and to use new fabrics to
create objects that are not only nice-looking,
but also functional, sophisticated and
geared mainly toward rest and relaxation.
Thanks to the materials I used, it’s possible
to place some of the accessories either
indoors or outside.
Besides the adoption of new theoretical
information from medicine, physiotherapy,
relaxation and rehabilitation it was also
important to communicate and collaborate
with existing companies whose technological
knowledge and processes I have
applied in practice. Sometimes I was confronted
with a negative reaction but eventually
also was given a helping hand.
I hope that this collection has the potential
to spread among the general public and
become part of day-to-day relaxation and
rehabilitation and to rapidly improve the
quality of human life.
Peale uute meditsiini, füsioteraapia ja puhkamise
ja taastusravi teadmiste kasutamise
pidasin oluliseks suhelda ja koostööd teha
ka firmadega, kelle tehnoloogilisi teadmisi ja
tootmisviise ma enda töös kasutasin. Vahel
oli nendepoolne vastukaja küll negatiivne,
kuid lõppude lõpuks ulatati mulle ikkagi
abikäsi.
Ma loodan, et minu kollektsioonil on
potentsiaali levida laiema publiku seas
ja sellest saab seega inimeste puhkeaja
igapäevane osa, mis parandab märgatavalt
elukvaliteeti.“
KIRJELDUS: Digital Therapy sai alguse
kergemeelse ja natuke humoorikana, et
rõhutada vajadust arutelu järele, mis käsitleks
sotsiaalmeedia olulisust ja kasu ühiskonnale.
Projekt on iseenesest kummalise
loogikaga meediaprojekt, mis arutleb tema
enda olulisuse ja eksistentsi üle. Sellisel
viisil käsitletakse mitmeid digitaalse meedia
plaforme ja pööratakse nad vigade näitamiseks
pea peale. Ühtlasi soovitakse õhutada
debatti ühiskonna suure digitaalmeedia
sõltuvuse üle.
Digital
Therapy
Projekt on peamiselt digitaalne ja veebipõhine,
lihtne mobiilirakendus ja veebivideo,
mis üheskoos üritavad aidata inimesi
Internetis vähem aega veeta ja rohkem
tõelises maailmas suhelda - või vähemalt
mõelda selle peale.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Digital Therapy
sai alguse minu enda vajadusest kahelda
teadmistes, mida sotsiaalmeedia ja meie
igavesti suurenev online-elu meile pakub.
Kõik teavad kui kõikehõlmavad ja tähtsad
uued digitaalsed suhtlusvõrgustikud meile
on - sellest rääkimine tundub isegi absurdne,
nad meie igapäevaelluon niivõrd sissepõimunud.
Ma arvan, et neil on oma koht,
ja nad on suurepärased vahendid, kuid ka
neis tuleb kahelda - kõik peab olema mõistlikkuse
piires
See projekt andis mulle võimaluse mängida
saatana käsilast, et luua üks ühele digitaalne
suhtlus, mis vastandub digitaalse
meedia pakutava infoga - projekt tõrjub
kasutajaid ja kasutatakse veebikasutajale
ebasõbralikku disaini. Esialgu loodi see
nalja eesmärgil ja loodetavasti tekitab see
inimestes, kes seda näevad huvi.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Digital Therapy
was conceived as a lighthearted and
slightly farcical means to highlight the need
for proper debate on the relevance and
benefits of social media to society. The
project is effectively a digital media project
which, in a very odd loop of logic, questions
its own existence and relevance. In doing
so, the project takes various digital media
platforms and turns them on their head to
point out their flaws and foster debate on
society’s heavy reliance on digital media.
The project is principally digital and is made
up of a website, a simple mobile applica-
tion, and a supporting piece of online video,
which all aim to help people to spend a little
less time on the Internet and a little more
time interacting in the real world – or to at
least think about it.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: DigitalTherapy
was born out my own need to question the
assumed wisdom that social media and our
ever-expanding online lives are benefiting
us as a society. Everyone is now aware of
how all-encompassing and important these
new digital communication platforms are
– it is almost absurd to even point this out,
such is the degree to which they’ve managed
to integrate themselves into our dayto-day
lives. I believe they have their place
and are fantastic tools but should not go
unquestioned – everything in moderation.
This project was an opportunity for me
to play devil’s advocate, to create an offthe-wall
piece of digital communication
that goes against all the prevailing wisdom
in digital media – to create a project that
actively discouraged users from engaging
with it and to come up with a piece of
anti-web design. Essentially, it was created
in the spirit of good fun and hopefully it will
raise some questions for the people who
see it.
valgusvihust varju, varjust valgusvihku. Esiti
paistab ta hirmunud, kuid teda ei jälitata -
teda piinab hoopis minevik.
on elu sellises maailmas. Kõik see teeb filmi
autentseks ja tõeliseks.
Film oli minu jaoks väga oluline - ma teadsin,
et professionaalne meeskond ei oleks
suutnud teemasse nii sisse minna. Film
räägib iseenda eest ja saadab vaatajale
sõnumi, et noorsookultuuris on probleeme.
Hiphopi skeene inimeste kohta on väga
palju eelarvamusi ja ma tahtsin näidata, et
kui vaatad seda päris lähedalt, siis näed
“tänava” loomingu tugevust.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A city at night. A
are no pursuers – only his past tormenting
him. All of a sudden, his run turns into a
touch the soul.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Störfaktor gives
its viewers a perspective from within the
hip-hop scene, where violence and social
problems are everywhere. The whole cast
and crew who worked on the film were part
of that scene and had their own experience
authentic and real.
This was very important to me – because
I knew that with a professional crew I
wouldn’t have been able to come so close
to the essence of the subject. The film
speaks for itself and sends a message to
the viewer that there are problems in youth
There are many prejudices against people
from the hip-hop scene and I wanted to
show that if you take a close look you can
Smile
REŽISSÖÖR: Chloe Rodham
ASUTUS: Farnhami Loomekunstiülikool
RIIK: Ühendkuningriik
KIRJELDUS: Smile on lühike stop-motionfilm,
mille tegevus toimub tsirkuses. See on
mittetoimuv armastuslugu kahest heidikust,
akrobaadist ja klounist, kes on oma rollis
kinni ning ei suuda etendatud romantikat
tegelikkuseks muuta. Neid vaadatakse kui
esinejaid, kuid samas ka nagu tavaliste
tunnetega tavalisi inimesi. Loo arenedes
hakkavad osalised pikkamööda nägema ka
etendajate endi maski taha.
Filmi erilisus peitub traditsioonilise nukufilmi
ja käsitsi maalitud taustade koosluses.
See eriline käsitsi tehtud stiil loob hämara,
intrigeeriva ja maagilise atmosfääri.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Tahtsin selles projektis
suhete, emotsioonide ja isiksuste esile
toomiseks proovida stop-motion-tehnikat.
Tahtsin luua tegelaskujud, kellega vaataja
saab suhestuda. Filmi tegemisel oli kõige
nauditavamaks läbi visuaali ja tegevuspaiga
abil atmosfääri loomine. Naeratuse puhul oli
tõeliseks katsumuseks dialoogi kasutamata
tunnete ja tegelaste segaduse edasi andmine,
meeleolu ja narratiivi kujundamisel
mängis väga olulist rolli kindlate värvide
kasutamine.
Tegelaste stiil, kostüümid ja tegevuspaik on
pärit 1920. aastatest. Detailidele tähelepanu
pööramine oli eesmärgi saavutamiseks
ülimalt oluline. Mind tõmbas retro poole,
kuna see on miski, mida igapäevaselt ei
näe, ning sellel on väga suur mõju kogu loo
romantilisele küljele. Praegune trend stilistikas
on väga puhas, lame ja kaubanduslik,
ja kuigi ma olen kasutanud arvutitehnikaid
koos stop-motion’iga, on filmi üldmulje siiski
meeldivalt käsitöölik.
COUNTRY: United Kingdom
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Smile is a short
stop-motion film set in the circus ring. It is a
dysfunctional love story between two misfits,
an acrobat dancer and a clown, fixed in
their character roles and unable to translate
their performed romance into reality. The
story looks at them as performers, but
also as real people with ordinary emotions.
As the narrative unfolds, the characters
gradually begin to see behind the façade of
their performance personae.
The unique look of the film was achieved by
compositing traditional puppet stop-motion
with hand-painted backgrounds. This
distinctive handmade style creates a dark,
intriguing and magical atmosphere.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: With this project
I wanted to experiment with using a stopmotion
technique to portray relationships,
emotion and personality. I wanted to create
characters that the viewer can engage with.
The most enjoyable aspect of filmmaking
for me is creating the atmosphere through
the visual appearance and setting. With
Smile the challenge was to convey the
complex feelings and confusion of the
characters without the use of dialogue
and using specific colours was particularly
important in setting the mood and shaping
the narrative.
The styling of the characters, costume
and location all have a 1920s feel. The
attention to detail was crucial to the look
I wanted to achieve. I was drawn to the
retro look because it’s something that
you don’t really see every day and it
contributes to the romance of the storyline.
The current trend in styling is very clean,
flat and commercial and although I have
used computer techniques mixed with the
stop-motion, overall the film is appealingly
handcrafted. and to defend an intuitive and
global understanding over just a logical and
reasonable approach.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Me tahtsime
teha filmi, mis näitaks ühel inimesel lasuvat
sotsiaalset survet ja tema soovi leida enda
identiteet. Saades lõpuks aru, et seda
saab teha vaid enda sisse vaadates. Filmi
viimast osa võib kirjeldada kui stiliseeritud
kafkalikku groteski, milles on ka orwellilikke
ulmeelemente. Minu arusaam filmist on,
et vaikusest, milles ei teadvustata Jumala
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Crossing the
genres of drama, slapstick and science
fiction, Slavomir Zrebny’s Ticho is a short
feature film about a man in a search of
silence. Everywhere he goes in search of
peace he finds noise and annoyance – until
he sees that the only place he can find
silence is his own inner world.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: We wanted to make
a film that depicted the social stresses piled
on a single human being and showed also
his desire to find his own identity. In the
end, gaining insight into his inner self is the
only way. The final shape of the piece might
be described as a stylised Kafka-esque
grotesque with Orwellian sci-fi elements.
My personal interpretation of the film is that
silence without awareness of God’s presence
becomes a tyranny.
KIRJELDUS: Joseph Carauna The New and
the Other on animatsioon piiratud kogukonnast
- sellisest, mille elavad seal tagurlikult
rutiinset ja harjumustega palistatud elu.
Kui üks mees läheb seiklema, teadmatusse,
kogeb ta midagi suurt. Ta läheb tagasi,
et kogetut jagada, kuid külaelanikud on
šokeeritud ning kohutatud. Nad ruttavad
ehmunult tagasi tegema seda, mida nad
on harjunud tegema, nii nagu midagi muud
ei olekski, eitades kõike peale nende endi
väikese maailma. Peategelane on nende
põikpäisest ükskõiksusest üllatunud ja
otsustab lahkuda, et õppida ja avastada,
jättes oma vana elu seljataha.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: “Küllalt tihti on inimene
enda rutiini “kastis” kinni, tal on seal
mugav, kuna kõik on tuttav ja teada. Tihti
vaatenurki, saab uudsusele osaks hirmusegane
eemaletõukamine, kuna see seab kõik
vana ja kriitikavabalt iseenesestmõistetava
kahtluse alla.“
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Quite often man is
confined by the ‘box’ of his routines, comfortable
with what is familiar and known.
Very often man learns to live with an idea
and becomes the idea itself, passing it to
his children. The routine mindset acquires
a life of its own that seems to sustain itself
and is largely resistant to change.
What happens when someone is curious
and ventures out of the box to discover
more, to know more, to bathe in the light of
other perspectives, other ideas, other ways
of doing things, other colours? When they
return to share the new truth and the new
light, the novelty is confronted with fear and
rejection as it challenges certainty and the
uncritical taken-for-granted view.
500 fotost.
Kuigi Djamo ja projekti keskmes olev naine
ei ole sugulased, oli ta Djamole rohkem kui
ema eest. 2009. aastal hakkas Djamo teda
filmima ja pildistama, et proovida aru saada,
mida “lahkumine” tähendab, ja ühtlasi
selleks, et ema vananemist dokumenteerida
ja surematuks muuta.
Varsti sai sellest nagu viimane päevik,
viimane asi, mille jätab armastatule maha
naine, kellel on süvenev pärasoole vähk ja
suhkruhaigus.“
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Ma alustasin
“Buni” projekti, sest ma ei teadnud, kuidas
kaotusega toime tulla. Mingi aja jooksul
pidin ma tema eest hoolitsema täiesti üksi.
Kõik see muutis minu suhtumist vananemisse
ja surma. See jättis minusse jälje. Ma ei
osanud oodata, et võin kunagi näha kedagi
väga lähedast aeglaselt mu silme ees
suremas. Tema on see, kes oli minu jaoks
kõige olulisem - kuigi me ei olnud sugulased.
Although Djamo and the woman at the
marked me. I didn’t expect I would ever see
a close one slowly dying right before my
even though we were not related. I started
recording her life because I didn’t know
what else to do. I was aware that I would
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Samaritans are
as old a community as the Bible itself. But
the risk of extinction is always upon them,
due to a low birth rate and a lack of women
willing to endure the hardship of a life in the
name of God. Karet, or Extirpation, is extreme
ostracism used to punish those who
fail to live by the rule of the Bible. Those
women who refuse inside marriages are left
behind and erased from the community’s
memory. Yali, a Samaritan mother of two,
has chosen an Israeli-Jew as life partner,
and left the community. She has apparently
turned her back on the impositions of the
Samaritan way but she struggles to come
to terms with the loss of her family/community
and, perhaps, her true identity.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: Israel is a land of
contrasts where life is uncompromising
as only tradition and necessity can be.
Through millennia, Jews, Palestinians,
Christians and Samaritans have shared
a little piece of land and a long history. I
came to know the Samaritans through their
unique position in the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict: caught in-between, in the folds of
history and geography. For this film I decided
to focus on their practice of arranged
marriages and interfamily unions, which
are necessary to maintain unity and defy
assimilation. I left them to tell their story
and let their graphic rituals set the tone of
the film, but I also tried to tell the story of
a woman, of her courage and resilience,
through a long interview. The climax comes
when Yali, facing the shortcomings of her
life, comes to question the simple dilemma
whether she has paid for her new-found
freedom with her happiness.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Israel on vastuolude
maa, kus elu on nii kompromissitu
kui üks traditsioon võib olla. Aastatuhande
jooksul on juudid, palestiinlased, kristlased
ja samariitlased jaganud maad ja pikka
ajalugu. Sain teada, kes samariitlased on,
kui kuulsin nende erilisest rollist Iisraeli-
Palestiina konfliktis: nad on kahe vahel nii
ajalooliselt kui ka geograafiliselt. Selles
filmis keskendun nende sundkokkuviimisele
rajatud ja perekonnasisesele abielutraditsioonile,
mis on ühtsuse säilitamiseks ja
assimilatsiooni tõrjumiseks väga olulised.
Ma lasin neil rääkida ja nende graafilistel
rituaalidel filmi meeleolu seada, kuid ühtlasi
tahtsin ma rääkida ühe naise lugu, tema
julgusest ja lõputust optimistist. Filmi haripunktis
näeb Yali oma elus puudujääke,
ning üritab leida vastuse küsimusele - kas
ta on maksnud oma leitud vabaduse eest
õnnega, mis tal oli?
Subliminal Mind
REŽISSÖÖR: Alya Manzart
KIRJELDUS: Alya Manzarti Subliminal Mind
ESINEJAD: Kali Retallack, Leif Helland, on kolmeminutiline mustvalge tantsufilm,
Ashleigh Renee Perrie
mis näitab mänguliselt ühe tütarlapse
ASUTUS: Victoria KunstiKolledž
mõttemaailma eri tasandeid. Alateadvuses
RIIK: Austraalia
toimuv on pandud tantsu, kus tantsijate
elu koosneb sümboolsetest elementidest.
Alateadlikul on siin oma koht, see käib me
kannul ja muudab mälu. See unistab, ronib,
ja kukub alateadliku mõttemaailma vette.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Tantsijana olin
ma huvitatud sellest, mis asub meie mõttemaailma
pinna all, selles tabamatus
vesises reaalsuses, mis elab meie teadlike
piiride taga. See isiklik alateadlik reservuaar
tantsib teadlikule mõttemaailmale
õige lähedale, oodates, et teda kuuldaks
ja nähtaks. Ma arvan, et tants näitab filmis
kõige paremini meie suurt suurte tunnetega
sisemaailma - see on üüratu ja impulsse
täis, see on paljude meie mõtete, tunnete
ja käitumismustrite salajaseks algeks. Meid
kõiki nähakse selles liikumises, kus ei ole
vaja liikuda ei edasi ega tagasi, ja sellele
alalhoitud instinktile tuginedes me oma elu
üles ehitamegi.
Subliminal Mind is a black-and-white
Leif Helland, Ashleigh Renee Perrie
three-minute dance film that offers a playful
INSTITUTION: Victorian College of the Arts insight into the layers of a girl’s mind. The
COUNTRY: Australia
movement of the subconscious is depicted
in dance, with characters who live through
symbolic elements. Here, the subconscious
has its own place, shadowing us, reworking
the memory. It dreams, it climbs, it falls into
the water of the subliminal mind.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: As a dancer I
was fascinated with representing what
lies beneath the surface of our mind, this
watery elusive realm that lives beyond
our conscious boundaries. This personal
unconscious reservoir dances into the veil
of the conscious mind, wanting to be seen
and heard. I think dance on film best animates
this vast hidden inner world of strong
feelings – this continuous stream of content
and flow of impulses, this secret source of
much of our thought, feeling and behaviour.
We are all caught up in this movement,
needing no forward or backwards, building
a life from this underlying instinct.
KIRJELDUS: Ümbritsetuna välimusekesksest
ühiskonnast otsustavad kaks naist
mängida mängu, mille eesmärgiks on välja
selgitada, kui kaugele saab vaid välimusele
toetudes minna. ENTRANCE WITH CHAR-
GE viib publiku eksiteele ja suunab nende
tähelepanu vastanditele: kirg ja eemale
lükkamine, nauding ja häbi, nautimine ja
lootus, armastus ja vägivald. Paljastatakse,
kes esinejad tegelikult on: kaks ilusat
tüdrukut, kes saavad tähelepanu, sest nad
on sellega harjunud; kaks head inimest, kes
tänu oma kaunile välimusele, meeldivale
naeratusele ja värvitud juustele on kujud,
milles on varjatult ja vaikimisi ka tumedam
ja haavatavam pool.
Etenduse kõige olulisem vahend on tants.
See on töö, mis peegeldab liikumist, mis
tuleneb esinejate erinevast karjäärist
esineja ja koreograafina, ja mis on seotud
1950ndatest päris sigarette suitsetavate
tüdrukutega; see esteetika viis nad
kabareesse tööle: paljad jalad ja mustatud
naiste töö…
Show püüab publikut segadusse ajada
ning januneb nende osavõtu järele;
esinejad paluvad nende abi, ja vastutasuks
lõbustavad ja meelitavad nad neid. Publik
tunneb ennast etenduse osana, kuigi samal
ajal tunnevad nad ennast ka reedetud
ja eelarvamuste orjana, mis paneb neid
inimesi usaldama ainult selle pärast, et nad
on ilusad.
Nendele peegeldustele põhinedes uurivad
esinejad enda isiksust ja tantsijate füüsilist
tööd, mis on nende välimusega vastuolus.
Nad küsivad endilt, mis sundis neid reageerima
füüsiliselt või isegi vägivaldselt; millised
reaktsioonid meilie meeldivad; kuidas me
näitame agressiivsust ja vastuolulisust välja;
keda need reaktsioonid mõjutavad. Nad
analüüsivad, reageerivad ja eksisteerivad
nendega koos.
KUNSTILINE EESMÄRK: Meil on erinev
elukäik ja ajapikku oleme leidnud, et meil on
ühiseid huvisid, mis ajendasidki meid ühist
projekti tegema. Meil mõlemal oli soov ja
vajadus ennast ümber kujundada, ennast
näidata, ise lõbutseda ja teisi lõbustada.
Meie oskustepagasis on ühiseid jooni ja
asju, mis on väga erinevad; me mõlemad
mängime oma tugevustega.
Projekti motiveerisid tegema isiklikud asjad:
meie trupp Les filles Föllen vastab kõige
pealt oma kahe looja vajadustele. Meie tööd
mõjutab ka meid ümbritseva ühiskonna
hetkeseisund, ühiskond, mis pakub loominguseemnetele
vägagi viljakat maad; teisest
küljest võib seda näha ka tiheda metsana,
millest on võimalik läbi murda. Ühiskond on
nii meie tööde aines kui ka publik.
Tantsu ja esituskunsti tudengitena töötame
liikuvate kehadega usus ja lootuses, et tantsust
saab kunstidistsipliin, ja et sellest saab
tulevikus aru ka tavaline publik. Kõik võivad
tantsuga tegeleda ja muidugi on tants ka
meelelahutus.
Me oleme kaks naist, ja naistena rõhutame
me pidevalt, et naiselikkus on sotsiaalne,
füüsiline ja seksuaalne valik… kuid meie
enda vaatenurgast nähtuna.
CHOREOGRAPHERS and DANCERS:
Les filles Föllen (Tuixén Benet &
INSTITUTION: Barcelona Provincial
Council Theatre Institute
COUNTRY: Spain
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Surrounded by
a society dazzled by appearances, two
women decide on a game to see how far
they can get on looks alone. ENTRANCE
WITH CHARGE deceives the public and
takes their attention to opposite extremes:
desire and rejection, pleasure and shame,
enjoyment and hope, love and violence.
The performers are revealed for what they
really are: two pretty girls who get attention
because that is what they are used
to getting; two good people who, through
their attractive appearances, pleasant
smiles and dyed hair, have bodies in which,
by default, there is a dark and necessarily
vulnerable part.
The performance’s most important tool is
dance. It is a work that reflects on movement,
emerging from the artists’ different
careers as performers and choreographers,
and connected by the aesthetic of cigarette
girls from the 1950s – an aesthetic that led
them to cabaret: bare legs and denigrated
women’s work...
The show aims to distract the public and
requires their participation; the performers
ask for their help, and in return they entertain
and delight. The audience feels part of
the action, while at the same time feeling
deceived, and enslaved by a prejudice
that makes them put their trust in a person
merely because they are beautiful.
Based on these reflections, the artists
investigate their own personae and physical
work as dancers in contradiction with their
external appearances. They ask themselves
which situations lead us to react in
a physical way, or to react violently; which
reactions we like; how we outwardly show
feelings of aggression and contradiction;
who these reactions affect. They analyse,
react and coexist.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT: We come from two
different life situations, and over time we
found we had shared interests that would
lead us to venture into a joint project. We
both had the desire and the need to transform
ourselves, to exhibit ourselves, to have
fun and amuse others. We share some
similar skills in our arsenal and have others
that are very different; we both play to our
strengths.
The motivations for starting up this project
are personal: our company Les filles Föllen
answers first the needs of its two creators.
Our work is stimulated also by the state
of the society we live in, a society which
provides fertile ground to sow the seeds
of creation; or that can be seen as a dense
forest through which a path might be made.
Society is both the subject and the audience
of our works.
Dance and performance students, we work
with our bodies in movement in the belief
and hope that dance becomes normalised
as an artistic discipline on the artistic
scene, and that it becomes understood as
such by the general public. Dance is an accessible
practice and it is entertainment.
We are two women, and as such we constantly
claim femininity as a social, physical,
sexual choice... but from our point of view.
