Description 

Engineered wood fiber is a popular 

choice for budget challenged 

playgrounds. Engineered wood fiber 

will require on-going maintenance 

and occasional topping off during 

its lifetime. This maintenance will 

help to maintain the recommended 

compacted material depth, thus 

keeping the surface compliant with 

applicable standards and warranty. 

Once the newly installed product has 

settled, it forms a “knitted” compacted 

layer that will support a variety of 

mobility devices including wheelchairs, 

gait trainers, crutches, and walkers. 

Providing adequate drainage is an 

important preventative measure, 

because wet engineered wood fiber may 

freeze in sudden climate changes. 

Benefits 

• Carefully following the installation 

details allows engineered wood fiber to 

possibly be installed by volunteer labor.

Tips

• As an organic product, wood fiber may 

not be the best choice in all climates. 

Basic Specification 

Product is manufactured crushed wood, 

comprised of randomly sized softwoods 

and or hardwoods which average 1”- 

2” in length and contain a maximum 

of 15% fines to aid in compaction. 

Product is non-toxic, and does not 

contain paint, chemicals, or additives. 

Product contains minimal bark, 

and is free of twigs, leaf debris, and 

other organic material. Product 

is certified as non-flammable. 

Product depth, after installation, must 

be in accordance with ASTM F1292 

impact attenuation standard and meet 

guidelines for critical fall height as 

set forth by the ASTM F1487 standard. 

Product shall meet the requirements of 

the ASTM F2075 engineered wood fiber 

standard which currently tests for metal 

and arsenic. Product also meets ASTM 

F1951 for determination of accessibility 

of surface systems under and around 

playground equipment. Complete bid

Description 

A popular unitary surface choice, 

Poured in Place (PIP) Rubber is one of 

the best surfaces for ADA accessibility. 

A wide range of colors allows you 

to add an element of graphic fun to 

the playground by creating inlaid 

shapes and themed designs. 

PIP Rubber utilizes trained installation 

crews to produce a surface that is as 

attractive as it is durable. Since the 

surface is created on the playground, it is 

critical that professional and experienced 

installation crews perform the work. 

Although PIP Rubber carries one of 

the highest initial investment costs, it 

is often offset by lower maintenance 

over the life of the product. Because 

it is a unitary surface, maintenance is 

reduced to occasional cleaning, and the 

removal of foreign materials and leaves. 

Thicknesses can be modified to 

meet varying critical fall heights 

within the playground.

• Upgrade to a clear aliphatic binder 

to avoid the normal slight yellowing 

of standard aromatic binders. 

This is especially important on a 

lighter colored EPDM wear layer. 

• Include wear mats under swings 

and at end of slide bedways. 


Product is comprised of two layers, 

consisting of an impact layer made of 

clean, recycled SBR rubber; and a wear 

layer, comprised of virgin EPDM rubber. 

Binder is a basic single component 

aromatic polyurethane agent. 

Product is to be installed over asphalt, 

concrete, or compacted stone. 

Temperature should be a minimum of 

40-45 degrees and a maximum of 95 

degrees Fahrenheit during installation. 

Thicknesses shall be determined by 

architect or owner, and will vary in 

impact course thickness as specified 

to meet or exceed playground 

equipment critical fall heights as set 

forth in the ASTM F1487 standard.

Rubber tiles offer high quality impact 

attenuation, low maintenance, 

long wear, and ADA accessibility. 

Popular for both indoor and outdoor 

use, they offer a resilient base for 

years of play and enjoyment. 

They are available in solid as well as 

mixed colors, and varying thicknesses, 

to give you more options in your overall 

plan. Beveled edge transition tiles are 

also available in different thicknesses, 

along with specifically molded 

inside and outside corner pieces. 

Tiles are made of 100% recycled 

rubber, and it’s estimated that 2 ½ 

tires go into the creation of one tile.

Basic Specifications 

GT Impax tiles are comprised of clean, 

recycled rubber with a polymeric 

binder to offer enhanced wear. 

The preferred sub-surface for GT 

Impax tiles is concrete or asphalt, but 

compacted crushed stone is an option, 

provided it is a stable, solid surface, 

with a slight grade to allow heavy 

rainfall to drain away from the surface 

area. If water puddles beneath the 

surface for extended periods of time, 

depressions may form, decreasing the 

overall appearance of the surface. 

Tiles meet strict testing standards to 

provide required impact attenuation, 

water permeability, traction, and wear 

resistance. Testing details, along 

with complete bid or architectural 

specifications are available from your

Tiles can be installed in a uniform color, or in multiple 

colors arranged in a variety of patterns and shapes.

Description 

Loose fill rubber is a superior surface 

made from clean, recycled tires. A 

unique rubber granule, it offers the 

most superior impact absorbing 

properties of all the loose fill surfaces. 

Available in several colors, it provides 

an aesthetically pleasing, functional 

surface for your play area. Recycled 

loose fill rubber can be more 

economical than loose fill wood 

products since it doesn’t decompose, 

requiring lower maintenance, top offs, 

and replacement than many other 

loose fill choices. It is unique among 

loose fill surfaces, because of the 

color choices that are available. 

GT Impax Loose Fill Rubber drains well 

after a rain and will not attract insects 

or animals. It also helps eliminate the 

growing waste pile of used tires in the

content of less than .01% (Wire free.)

Description 

GT Impax Bonded Rubber is an attractive, 

seamless surface that recycles clean, 

shredded rubber tires into a useful 

and environmentally responsible safety 

surfacing. In many regions, bonded 

rubber provides a lower cost option 

than other seamless surfaces. It does 

not absorb water, and with proper 

drainage will not freeze. It’s a great 

option for paths and walkways. 

Installation must be performed by 

technically trained, GameTime certified 

installers, and requires specific depth, 

slope, and tolerance of the base 

materials. Thicknesses are varied to 

meet specified play equipment critical 

fall heights per the ASTM F1487 

standard. The product is porous to 

allow free flow of water, so it doesn’t 

puddle, and is always ready for play.

GT Impax Recycled Bonded Rubber 

surfacing is comprised of a precise 

combination of 100% wire free, clean 

recycled rubber, a polyurethane 

binder; and a pigmented colorant. The 

binder is comprised of 100% Single 

Component MDI based Polyurethane 

binding agent. The product shall be 

poured in place and troweled to provide 

for a resilient, seamless appearance. 

Temperature should be a minimum of 

40-45 degrees and a maximum of 95 

degrees Fahrenheit during installation. 

The product shall be stable and slip 

resistant to comply with all requirements 

set forth in the Americans with 

Disabilities Act. Product depth must 

be in accordance with ASTM F1292 

impact attenuation standard and meet 

guidelines for critical fall height as

GT Turf is an engineered grass 

product designed to bring the look 

of nature to your play environment. 

Unlike real grass, it offers height 

appropriate impact attenuation, 

while providing the appearance of a 

beautiful lawn. Unlike lawn, however, 

GT turf never needs mowing 

We have turf solutions that are 

designed for either play space or 

stadium applications, with or without 

infill requirements, and maintenance 

will vary by type selected. 

GT Turf is available in a variety of grass 

varieties, so it’s easy to choose one 

that fits with your region! Properly 

installed it offers adequate drainage, 

and offers great impact attenuation, 

long wear, and ADA accessibility 

in playground applications.

Turf Surfacing utilizes a two layer 

system, with a top layer comprised 

of a combination of monofilament 

polyethylene fiber and polypropylene. 

Fiber size consists of 10,000 

denier monofilament 125 microns 

thick combined with 6500 denier 

polypropylene. The product was 

developed for several application types. 

The thick, dense 6500 monofilament 

polypropylene supports and holds 

in place the polyethylene without 

the use of a rubber crumb fill, while 

maintaining a soft touch and feel. 

A separate cushion comprised of 

all weather unitary urethane is 

installed under this top layer to meet 

necessary fall height requirements.

Accessories 


GTImpax Wear Mats 

Wear mats help to provide stability for 

loose-fill surfaces when placed under 

swings, slide exits, and other play 

components where landing, dragging 

of feet, or other movement will cause 

surfacing to be displaced. They can 

also protect against premature wear on 

bonded and poured rubber surfaces, too. 

Wear mats are black, and are comprised 

of 85% recycled rubber, 15% EPDM 

rubber and a polyurethane bonding agent. 

They can be placed on top of, or just below 

the surface, and will reduce maintenance 

on loose-fill surfaces where used. 

PlayCurb Edging 

PlayCurbs are an attractive way to minimize 

migration of loose fill surfaces to areas outside the 

play use zone. They are available in several colors, 

which can be used individually or mixed to create a 

colorful border. PlayCurbs come in 6”, 8” and 12” 

high sections, and are shaped either straight or 

curved, allowing your GameTime representative 

to customize a PlayCurb layout to suit your unique 

use zone and fall height. Your PlayCurb order will 

also include adapters, if variable curb heights are 

used, as well as all anchor spikes required.

Drainage Systems 

Geotextile Fabric 

Accessible PlayCurbs are used to allow easy 

transition to the play area without the need 

to step over a curb ledge, and are ideal for 

providing access to children using mobility 

devices. The unique design of the Accessible 

PlayCurb provides traction, and will not 

release vital safety surfacing. It adapts to 

both 8” and 12” high PlayCurb systems. 

We offer a geocomposite drainage 

system developed specifically for the 

recreation market. It consists of a flexible 

thermoformed three-dimensional 

polymer core, tightly encapsulated by a 

non-woven geotextile fabric. Drainage 

systems can help solve groundwater and 

drainage problems by allowing a high 

interior water flow, while preventing soil 

from intruding into the drainage system. 

Geotextile fabric provides a water 

permeable separation barrier between 

earth and loose-fill surfaces. It prevents 

clogging of drainage systems and helps 

hold the surfacing in place.
