CRUISING INTO SUMMER:
SUMMER PREVIEW PROGRAMS
All new students are required to attend Susquehanna University’s summer orientation
event, Cruising Into Summer, prior to their arrival at Susquehanna. This year’s summer
preview programs will take place in June. During this one-day program, you will be
involved in activities designed to prepare you for your academic and cocurricular
entrance to Susquehanna in the fall. You will have the opportunity to explore your
academic major and interests; discover ways to maximize your college experience;
meet and interact with other new students, as well as faculty and staff; and enjoy
what makes Susquehanna a unique campus environment.
The Office of First-Year Programs coordinates
an array of experiences that aid in a student’s
positive and productive transition to life as a
Susquehanna student.
Preview Day assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis. If the
dates you request are filled by the time we receive your completed registration
materials, you will be assigned to the next available date. A confirmation
of your registration, including the assigned date, will be emailed to your
Susquehanna email account within two weeks of when we receive your
registration request.
To best accommodate students, each Preview Day will have advising sessions.
The School of Arts and Sciences; and the Sigmund Weis School of Business will
be represented at all sessions, providing your initial introduction to curricular
advising. These sessions also will give you an opportunity to indicate your
course preferences, which will be used by your department to create your
final fall schedule before you return to campus in August.
We strongly encourage you to plan ahead. Check-in for the program begins
at 8 a.m. in the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center’s Mellon Lounge. The
program concludes at approximately 4 p.m.
DURING YOUR SUMMER PREVIEW PROGRAM, YOU WILL
REGISTRATION, CONFIRMATION
AND ACCOMMODATIONS
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
For your convenience, you may register for your summer preview program
date via your registration materials or online at MYSU.SUSQU.EDU.
REGISTRATION DEADLINES
See the enclosed registration form for deadlines for our June sessions.
NOTE
SUMMER PREVIEW PROGRAM CONFIRMATION
A confirmation of your registration, including the assigned date, will be emailed to your Susquehanna
email account within two weeks of when we receive your completed registration request. We recommend
that you do not make binding travel or other arrangements until you receive your confirmation. Your email
confirmation will include your assigned session date and direct you to the First-Year Programs website to
download an itinerary of the day’s events, a checklist of what to bring with you, and instructions on finalizing
important administrative forms to be completed prior to your Preview Day. Please note that we cannot
register you for a Preview Day until you have completed and submitted all necessary forms. In addition,
you will receive information on travel and student placement exams. Please bring a hard copy of your email
confirmation to check in the morning of your Preview Day.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT AND PLACEMENT EXAMS
As part of the Central Curriculum, students are required to demonstrate proficiency through the
intermediate (201) level of a language other than English. This will entail up to 12 credit hours, depending
upon language placement. Students are required to take a foreign language placement exam in the
language that they have previously studied to determine their present language level. A placement above
the first-semester level enables a student to reduce the number of credit hours needed to complete the
language requirement.
ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
The Office of First-Year Programs will make appropriate arrangements for students who have special
needs. If you require such accommodations during your scheduled session, please list them in the “Special
Accommodations” section of the registration form. For more information, please contact Cindi Baralt at
570-372-4483 or baraltcindi@susqu.edu.
Students with learning or physical disabilities may request assistance for testing purposes. These
accommodations typically consist of extended test-taking or particular testing locations at the university.
Students who need other types of accommodations will need to communicate these in advance of their
attendance. These accommodations are provided only during orientation. A student’s status for testing
accommodations during the academic year will be evaluated by the university’s disability support services
and approved on an individual basis. For more information, contact Phillip Gehman, coordinator of disability
services, at gehman@susqu.edu.
REGISTRATION CANCELLATION POLICY
Any and all cancellations must be received one week before your scheduled Preview Day. Please
reschedule your Preview Day by contacting the Office of First-Year Programs by phone at 570-372-4483,
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
FOR YOUR INCOMING STUDENT
PARENT AND FAMILY ORIENTATION
The summer preview program is not just a student
affair. Parents and family members of SU’s first-year
and transfer students are invited to participate in
the concurrent parent and family preview program.
Higher education studies show that family interest
and engagement contribute positively to a college
student’s overall academic success. By participating in
the summer program, you can assist in your student's
transition to university life.
This program introduces families to the broad curricular
and cocurricular aspects of Susquehanna University.
You will have the opportunity to meet representatives
from the campus community, participate in important
university presentations and learn about essential
campus resources available to new students. You also
will have the opportunity to interact with current
Susquehanna students, faculty and administrators
and, of course, each other.
Participating family members may dine on campus for
a nominal fee of $9.50 per person for an all-inclusive
luncheon buffet. Please indicate on the registration form,
enclosed or online, the number of individuals who will
incoming first-year students to engage in a directed volunteer project
coordinated by the Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of
the Chaplain. Twenty students will be selected to work alongside
university faculty, staff and upper-level peer mentors, immersed in
service projects and learning activities that focus on homelessness
among people in both the Susquehanna neighborhood and in our
nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.
