Objective:<br />

To learn <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> separation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic Church from <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> churches.<br />

To understand <strong>the</strong> differences between <strong>the</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Catholic Church.<br />

Introduction:<br />

For <strong>the</strong> first 450 years <strong>the</strong> church was essentially one. Five historic Patriarchal centers-Jerusalem,<br />

Antioch, Rome, Alexandria and Constantinople; formed a cohesive whole and were in full<br />

communion with each o<strong>the</strong>r. An important division took place in 45l AD during <strong>the</strong> council <strong>of</strong><br />

Chalcedon. Then, in 1054 AD, <strong>the</strong> Roman Patriarch pulled away from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r four, pursuing his<br />

long-developing claim <strong>of</strong> universal headship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church.<br />
