Studies in <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church by a monk from <strong>the</strong> wilderness <strong>of</strong> Anba<br />

Macarius <strong>the</strong> Great<br />

Introduction<br />

The <strong>Orthodox</strong> faith consider only three sources for its teaching:<br />

o Bible<br />

o Fa<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

o Tradition<br />

The early church fa<strong>the</strong>rs helped keeping <strong>the</strong>se teachings without any change or<br />

alterations.<br />

Lesson Outline:<br />

II. The Place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

It has always been <strong>the</strong> custom, and still is, to prove <strong>the</strong> true faith in two ways; first by <strong>the</strong><br />

authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Divine Canon, and second by <strong>the</strong> tradition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Universal Church. The<br />

Canon alone does not <strong>of</strong> itself suffice for every question. Also, interpreting <strong>the</strong> divine words<br />

according to <strong>the</strong>ir own persuasion, take up various erroneous opinions. Therefore, it is<br />

necessary that <strong>the</strong> interpretation <strong>of</strong> divine Scripture should be ruled according to <strong>the</strong> one<br />

standard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church‘s belief, especially in those articles on which <strong>the</strong> foundations <strong>of</strong> all<br />

doctrine rest (St. Vincent <strong>of</strong> Lerins).<br />

In contrast, Sola Scriptura is a protestant doctrine meaning that <strong>the</strong> Bible is sufficient in and <strong>of</strong><br />

itself.<br />

III. The Mind <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong> Church<br />

Universal opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church<br />

Commonly accepted practice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church<br />

IV. Enlightenment vs. Inspiration<br />

Scripture is inspired by <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit<br />
