<strong>The</strong> program manager continued to further these endeavors<br />
and explore other issues as well, including domestic violence in<br />
later life, domestic violence data collection, and immigration<br />
issues and domestic violence. <strong>The</strong> program staff also<br />
represented the <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> in statewide, multi-disciplinary<br />
groups — including the <strong>Ohio</strong> Sexual and Intimate Partner<br />
Violence Prevention Consortium, <strong>Ohio</strong> Sexual Assault Task<br />
Force and Family Violence Prevention Center Advisory Council<br />
— to ensure proper understanding <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> the courts and<br />
the judicial system as they concern domestic violence, sexual<br />
violence and stalking.<br />
Interpreter Services Program<br />
<strong>The</strong> Interpreter Services Program provides technical<br />
assistance, training and learning opportunities for courts and<br />
interpreters in the proper use <strong>of</strong> qualified court interpreters,<br />
develops practical resources to assist courts and increases access<br />
for deaf, hard-<strong>of</strong>-hearing and limited English-pr<strong>of</strong>icient parties<br />
and witnesses. Further, the program staff works to establish a<br />
certification process to test, certify, register and/or qualify court<br />
interpreters.<br />
During 2008, the Interpreter Services Program staff<br />
sponsored or collaborated in 17 training seminars, including<br />
Domestic Violence for <strong>Court</strong> Interpreters and Skill-building for<br />
Languages other than Spanish.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> also released new superintendence rules<br />
for court interpreters, Sup R. 80 through Sup R. 88, which<br />
cover the certification and appointment <strong>of</strong> court interpreters,<br />
as well as the Code <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Conduct.<br />
<strong>The</strong> program staff and members <strong>of</strong> the Advisory Committee<br />
on Interpreter Services collaborated in 2008 to complete<br />
Interpreters in the Judicial System: A Handbook for <strong>Ohio</strong> Judges, as<br />
well as a DVD entitled <strong>The</strong> Role <strong>of</strong> Interpreters in the Legal System.<br />
Further, advisory committee members participated as faculty<br />
in training events sponsored by the program.<br />
