that included classroom activities, hands-on experiences at<br />

law <strong>of</strong>fices and governmental <strong>of</strong>fices, and concluded with a<br />

mock trial, which allowed the students to try a criminal case.<br />

<strong>The</strong> students who participated in the summer institute remain<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the LEO program through participation in law-related<br />

activities during the school year. A second class <strong>of</strong> summer<br />

institute students will be invited to participate in the 2009<br />

program, and planning is under way to expand the program to<br />

Akron, Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo.<br />

Commission on the Rules <strong>of</strong> Superintendence<br />

for <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Court</strong>s<br />

<strong>The</strong> Commission on the Rules <strong>of</strong> Superintendence<br />

for <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Court</strong>s is a 19-member commission that makes<br />

recommendations to the <strong>Court</strong> for adoption <strong>of</strong> new rules<br />

and amendments to the Rules <strong>of</strong> Superintendence for <strong>Ohio</strong><br />

<strong>Court</strong>s. During 2008, the commission completed work on<br />

rules regarding public access to court records, qualifications<br />

for magistrates, and court security standards. <strong>The</strong> commission<br />

also began work on rules regarding certification <strong>of</strong> court<br />

reporters, standards and training for guardians ad litem and a<br />

reorganization/restructuring <strong>of</strong> the rules.<br />

Commission on the Rules <strong>of</strong> Practice<br />

& Procedure<br />

<strong>The</strong> Commission on the Rules <strong>of</strong> Practice & Procedure is a<br />

19-member commission that receives and considers proposed<br />

rules and amendments to the Rules <strong>of</strong> Appellate Procedure,<br />

Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure, Juvenile Procedure, the<br />

Traffic Rules and the Rules <strong>of</strong> Evidence, and recommends rules<br />

and amendments to the <strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> for adoption. In 2008,<br />

the commission finalized work on several rule amendments<br />

that became effective July 1, 2008, including an amendment<br />

to Crim. R. 43 to give courts more flexibility in the use <strong>of</strong><br />

video teleconferencing, an amendment clarifying App. R. 22<br />

on entries <strong>of</strong> judgment, and amendments to rules governing<br />

electronic discovery in civil cases.<br />

Task Force on the Code <strong>of</strong> Judicial Conduct<br />

In 2008, the task force completed its work, culminating in the<br />

<strong>Supreme</strong> <strong>Court</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong>’s adoption <strong>of</strong> a new Code <strong>of</strong> Judicial<br />

Conduct, effective March 1, 2009. <strong>The</strong> task force completed its<br />

review <strong>of</strong> the 2007 ABA Model Code <strong>of</strong> Judicial Conduct and<br />
