New regulations regarding 

emergency exit systems have been 

in force within Europe since 01.04.2003. 

These regulations have been based on 

two standards: 

- DIN EN 179 

for emergency exit locks 

- DIN EN 1125 

for panic locks 

DIN EN means, that different 

existing national standards have been 

incorporated with other into a uniform 

European standard to form EN. 

New enhanced regulations inevitably 

bring about changes in procedures, 

which esco is going to meet compe- 

tently with approved products. 

Previously it was possible to combine 

panic locks with any strike plate and 

ironmongery. The standardisation 

stipulates that all components must be 

inspected, certifi ed and identifi ed 

jointly as a complete locking system. 

This is the only way to guarantee a 

coordinated and safe performance. 

esco is going to offer the architects 

and contractors huge scope in terms 

of creativity and safety when imple- 

menting these standards by seeking 

approval for combinations with hard- 

ware from different manufacturers.

EMERGENCY EXITS 

DIN EN 179 

Emergency exits according 

DIN EN 179 are designated for 

buildings to which the general 

public does not have access and 

where all occupants are familiar 

with the function of the hard- 

ware. This is otherwise known as 

‘trained traffi c’. 

The exits might be side exits of 

public buildings, which are only 

used by authorised persons 

(staff for example). The choice 

of hardware components is 

limited to levers and push pads. 

The hardware must also meet 

regulations stipulated by these 

standards. 

PANIC DOORS 

DIN EN 1125 

Panic doors according 

DIN EN 1125 are used in public 

buildings. Visitors are not familiar 

with the function of the emer- 

gency exit doors and must be 

able to operate these doors 

without prior instructions, training 

or information in an emergency. 

Airports, shopping centres, 

hospitals, schools or public 

administration buildings fall 

into this category. The choice 

of hardware components is 

limited to panic bars with shoot 

bolts or espagnolette bolts. The 

hardware must meet specifi c 

regulations to ensure a safe and 

permanent performance.

ALU 540i has a 10 mm coupling point for more security and enables even easier 

fabrication. Not only are the stay bearings and pivot rests clamped onto the frame, 

but also, all cams can be inserted through the connecting-rod from beneath. ALU 

540i is compatible with almost all conventional profi le systems.

THE CONNECTING-ROD FROM BENEATH 

- The locking cams, inserted into the connecting-rod from beneath 

can not be jemmied out. 

- Gasket-compression adjustment via eccentric cams (+/- 1 mm)

help of opening mechanism within a period of 

maximum one minute. The combustion products 

can escape into the atmosphere through these 

openings already in the initial stage of fi re. The time 

period for release of openings has a big infl uence 

on the optimum performance of natural smoke
