APPENDIX A. TALK.ABORTION: AUGUST 9, 1994 159 What does the fatal community say about abortion? Nothing, as there is no such community. Yet there is a Jewish community. Well maybe there are differences between Jews and fetuses. Jews are and were persons with rights. This is not because I say so, neither is it because you say so. The personhood of Jews is not in any way dependent on our views. They are persons because they themselves say so. That means each individual Jew says that he is a person with rights and he is. Others have no choice but to respect the rights. Fetuses on the other had are like animals, they are not self-conscious and do not know they are persons with rights. The fact that they have human DNA does not magically make them persons. Membership in a species cannot per se be a deciding fact in person hood any more than membership in a race. > >Are we supposed to be proud of our pro-choice stance on the holocaust? I mean the thing that you so willingly ignore the fact that Jews are persons with their own rights, wishes and feelings.
