Career Services Corner by Dr. Thomas Matthews Director of Career Services SUNYIT brings together job-seekers, employers Hundreds of students, alumni and other job-seekers joined more than 65 companies local, regional, national and international at SUNYIT’s Career Fair 2003 Oct. 9 in the Campus Center gym. The annual event is one of the largest of its kind in the State University system. Participating employers took part to fill internship, parttime, and full-time opportunities; current SUNYIT students, alumni and other interested attendees dropped off résumés, hoping to make career connections. Among the companies recruiting at Career Fair 2003 were: Albany Medical Center Hospital, BAE Systems, Eversan Incorporated, Fiber Instrument Sales, FleetBoston Financial Group, Masonic Home, Orion Bus Industries, PAR Government Systems Corporation, Resource Center for Independent Living, and Utica National Insurance Group. Career Services Director Thomas Matthews and Assistant Director Robert Palazzo thank Michael Evke ‘84 for donating a Career Fair sign. This year, an effort was made to increase the participation of SUNYIT alumni. “Increasingly, employers are relying on Career Services as a resource for experienced professionals in addition to the more traditional entrylevel hires,” says Career Services Director Dr. Thomas Matthews. “Alumni interested in attending Career Fair found employers offering professional advancement as well as opportunities to make a career change.” The Bridge 5

First Freshmen Put SUNYIT in the Spotlight Top: David Garrett, Director of International Student Services, addresses the first class of freshman during orientaiton. Below: Shannel Finch one of SUNYIT’s first freshmen. Area newspapers, TV and radio stations often do “back to school” stories to show what’s new at the region’s colleges. And this fall, they found plenty of material at SUNYIT. Reporters and photographers from Utica, Rome, and Syracuse newspapers, as well as Utica-Rome TV and radio stations, focused on the arrival of SUNYIT’s first class of freshmen. The Syracuse Post-Standard published a feature on the first day of classes with quotes from President Mason H. Somerville, two staff members, and two freshmen. The Utica Observer-Dispatch shadowed a freshmen on his first day of classes and published the results the next day. WKTV previewed the start of the semester, sending a crew to the last Orientation session on the Friday before classes started. Coverage of the early part of the semester continued with radio and TV reports on Convocation Sept. 4. A videographer from WKTV captured the procession across campus after interviewing President Somerville and guest speaker Dr. Lawrence Sturman, director of the Wadsworth Laboratory. Mark Your Calendar! SUNYIT will hold an open house Saturday, April 17, 2004, for prospective students and their families. For more information, contact the Office of Admissions.
