Academy News
Greg Kelley played the part of the shepherd and father of Roman soldier Zac
Ruesewald in the November 30 Drama Department’s presentation, While Shepherds
Watched by P.B. Rogerson. It is a one-act play featuring a Roman Centurion soldier
who is lamenting the death of Christ. The crucifixion sparks a memory of his
childhood as a shepherd and the mysterious Angel who delivered the news of a
baby born in Bethlehem. Drama teacher Jessica Dempsey noted: “The students
seemed to really bond over this play. We invited the choir to perform because
we wanted to further the message of unity and brotherhood that Christ, himself,
believed.”
A Festival of Lessons and Carols was presented by the Subiaco Academy chorus
and members of the Academy and Abbey staffs on Sunday afternoon, December
2, 2012, in the Abbey Church. The format of this celebration, nine carols and nine
scriptural lessons, comes from a 19th-century tradition in England. The lessons
proclaimed by students and staff tells the story of the redemption of man, from
the fall of Adam to the incarnation of Jesus. Carols were performed by the Academy

Alex Walker received decorating tips from Joyce Bowman during the December
1 “Lighting of the Hill.” Parent Association members and students
decorated with lights and various Christmas ornaments the cafeteria, the front
entrance of the Main Building, the front of Alumni Hall, the PAC and the
mall area.
Subiaco Abbey and Academy is proud to announce that the 11th recipient of
the Subiaco Award for Literary Merit is Ms. Beth Ann Fennelly. Ms. Fennelly
directs the MFA Program at Ole Miss where she was named the 2011 Outstanding
Liberal Arts Teacher of the Year. She’s won grants from the N.E.A.,
the MS Arts Commission, and United States Artists. Her work has three times
been included in The Best American Poetry
Series. Fennelly has published three full-length
poetry books. Her first, Open House, won The
2001 Kenyon Review Prize, the Great Lakes College Association New Writers Award,
and was a Book Sense Top Ten Poetry Pick. It was reissued by W. W. Norton in 2009.
Her second book, Tender Hooks, and her third, Unmentionables, were published by W.
W. Norton in 2004 and 2008. She has also published a book of nonfiction, Great with
Child, in 2006, with Norton. Fennelly writes essays on travel, culture, and design for
Country Living, Southern Living, the Oxford American, and others. She is co-authoring a
novel with her husband, Tom Franklin. They live in Oxford with their three children.
The 11th Annual Subiaco Literary Symposium will be held on Friday, February 22,
2013.
Austin Breed and Mike VanGaasbeek were recently named to the 4-AAA West – All
Conference football team.
The senior high basketball team played in the UAFS/Coca Cola Classic December 27-29, 2012. The Trojans suffered
three losses: Springdale 66, Subiaco 34; Arkadelphia 48, Subiaco 46; and Bryant 56, Subiaco 49.

Abbey News
Eighty-three friends of Subiaco Abbey and Academy enjoyed the annual Subiaco gathering at the
Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock on December 5, 2012. Hosted by Pierson Callahan ’89, the
gathering featured good food and conversation with alumni, friends, several monks, and staff of the
Academy and Abbey.

A dying large oak tree near the southwest corner of the Abbey
Church was removed by the Abbey maintenance crew
recently. Plans are underway to erect a Pereyra memorial
marker on the spot where the tree had been.

Quiz Bowl teams
Br. Ephrem and Raymond Buss of
the illustrious class of ’60 during a
recent visit at the Buss residence in
North Little Rock
On December 10 Subiaco’s junior high quiz bowl
team beat the Paris junior high team: Subiaco 380,
Paris 110 and Subiaco 290, Paris 90. Subiaco’s
leading point-winners: Axel Ntamatungiro 140,
Adam Musgrove 240. On December 12 Subiaco
defeated Scranton: Subiaco 280, Scranton 210 and
Subiaco 325, Scranton 130. Leading the way were
Axel Ntamatungiro 190, Adam Musgrove 110,
and Robbie Kiss 50.
On December 12 Subiaco’s senior high quiz bowl
team beat Scranton 175-165 and 160-85. Leading
the way for the Trojans was Jacob Maestri
with 180 points, followed by Daniel Heinrichs (40
points), Eric Ledieu (30), Matt Tran (10), and Sam
Chisholm (10).
