About Us
Subiaco Academy’s Learning Center
has been established to meet the unique needs
of students who have average to above average
intelligence, but have difficulty in certain areas
of classroom instruction such as reading, mathematics,
spelling, listening, writing, and/or reasoning
skills. The program takes place within a
rigorous college preparatory curriculum and no
academic work is altered
for the student.
The Learning
Center helps students
with Dyslexia, AD/
HD, and dysgraphia
learn to compensate for
these differences, helps
others grasp subjects
they find difficult,
and is available to all
students to help them Grasping difficult subjects
develop the skills necessary
for college.
The mission of the Center is to promote
skills that emphasize goal setting, taking risks,
monitoring performance, coping strategies, making
adjustments when necessary, and assuming
responsibility for oneself.
Our Program
The Center teaches students study strategies
and helps improve basic skills in reading,
writing, math, and science. The Learning Center
is designed to help students achieve academically
while also nurturing social and personal growth.
A course for first time enrollees, taught by
a study skills specialist, teaches time management,
note taking, memory techniques, and test-taking
strategies. A writing specialist teaches writing
skills needed for college with an emphasis on
research, organization, critical thinking, and reading.
Reading instruction, taught by a reading
specialist, is available for students who choose to
improve their reading skills. Methods include
individual or small group instruction, as well as
multi-sensory learning. Vocabulary building,
reading comprehension, phonics, and increasing
reading speed are the goals of reading instruction.
An accelerated math program is also offered.
Although the Learning Center makes no
guarantees for success, our goal is to give students
the confidence and tools
necessary for academic and
personal achievement.
Study Hall
The Learning Center offers an Evening
Tutorial Study Hall for students who have
trouble staying focused and productive during
the mandatory evening study period. During the
evening tutorial, faculty members and tutors help
students keep
on track for
completing
homework
and give them
assistance
with specific
subjects.

We’re an all-boys college preparatory
boarding and day school grades 7-12.
We serve young men who respond well to
small classes, a structured environment,
and a strong sense of community.

Enhanced Services
The Subiaco Academy Learning Center
offers a variety of enhanced services to help students
compensate for their learning challenges.
Test Accommodations include extended
time, the assistance of a reader, individual
testing rooms, computers for essay exams, and
small group review sessions for major tests and
final exams.
Program Coordinators provide daily
one-on-one sessions with the students, assistance
with understanding learning styles,
organizational skills, study strategies, advocacy,
and coordination of services. Coordinators
help to develop highly individualized learning
and test taking strategies with each student,
recording and naming these, and reviewing and
using these as and when necessary.
Tutoring services are provided by professional
staff and trained peer tutors.
Reading materials are provided on
tape and are available on Kurzweil Reader.
Students have access to audio books to help
them with difficult reading assignments.
All Subiaco faculty are aware of which
students are in the Learning Center and are
attuned to the needs of these students in the
classroom and in their teaching methods.
Support team
Subiaco Academy is fortunate to have a
Student Support Services Team in place whose
goal is “success” for each and every student.
Mrs. Shirley Kiefer is the Learning
Center Director. She conducts evening study
hall, serves as coordinator of peer tutoring,
offers test preparation sessions for SAT and
ACT tests, and coordinates all learning and
teaching strategies for coping with and compensating
for the students’ learning disabilities.
Mr. Robert Pugh is the Guidance
Counselor. He helps new students adjust to
the Subiaco environment and offers support
and encouragement to all students.
Mrs. Michelle Chuang is the English
as a Second Language (ESL) instructor and
assists with the Learning Center.
Mrs. Del Berry is the School Nurse.
She handles student illnesses and injuries, administers
routine medications, conducts health
screenings, and offers guidance with emotional
needs.
Fr. Brendan Miller is the Spiritual
Counselor. He assists with the peer tutoring
program and is available for spiritual guidance.
Mrs. Chandra Rush is the Director
of College Guidance. She provides assistance
with college and career planning, coordinates
standardized testing, and offers guidance, support,
and encouragement.
