Subiaco Academy’s cross country team earned the
runner-up spot in the District 4AAAA tournament at Pottsville
on October 18, 2011. Two seniors Joe Chanoine and
Ross Dies led the way for the Trojan squad, finishing the 5K
respectively in 7th and 8th place. Other members of the Trojan
team were John Loia, Luke Guist, and Vince Loia. All five
will compete in the November 5 State AAAA meet in Harrison.
Coach Jonathan White appears in the photo with the five
members of the Trojan team.
Fans who arrived after 6:00 PM for the October 24
Junior High Trojan 8-6 win over the Mena Bearcats missed
the offensive fireworks by both teams. Subiaco’s Ben Beck
burst through the Bearcat defense on a 46-yard run for six
points on the Trojans’ first offensive possession; Beck’s run
was successful on the two-point PAT. Mena scored on a
kickoff return; this TD also came within the first few minutes of the contest. The stalwart Trojan defense, including
a sack by Logan Kremer and an interception by Toby Schluterman, held Mena scoreless for the remainder of the
game.
Subiaco Academy was the runner-up in the State Quiz Bowl competition in an April 2011 televised tournament.
Several members of that team return for the 2011-2012 season.
The Subiaco Senior High Quiz Bowl team continued its winning tradition, overwhelming Scranton in the
opening match of the season on October 12. In the first game Subiaco’s Toby Turney and Eli Sorey led the team to
a 305-100 victory. Eli Hekel and Daniel Heinrichs had the answers in a 205-170 win over the Rockets.
The Subiaco Junior High team also were victorious at Scranton -- 200-130 in the first match and 220-120 in
the second. Subiaco’s Quiz Bowl team won its second match of the new season beating Clarksville 365 to 155 in the
first game and 385 to 185 in the second game. The Subiaco Junior High team beat Clarksville 160-130 and 235-95.
In an October 26 match at Booneville, the senior high Trojans overwhelmed the Bearcats 330-145 and 335-
125. In the two games at Booneville, Subiaco’s Toby Turney scored 210 points, Jameson Hall 80, Eli Hekel 50, Jun-
Tae Ko 40, Matt Tran 30, and Riley Hurd 20. The junior high Trojans suffered their first loss of the season, losing
to Booneville 215-125 and 255-230.
The Subiaco Jazz Ensemble entertained 1,000 plus Catholic School students and their teachers in an October
18 event at the Ft. Smith Convention Center. Students from Trinity Junior High, St. Boniface School, Christ the
King School, Immaculate Conception School, and St. Joseph School (Paris) obviously
enjoyed the lively performance directed by Deacon Roy Goetz. The ensemble
performed after the group joined “One Million Children Praying the Rosary
for Unity and Peace” praying in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
Chandra Rush was presented the 2011-2012 Outstanding Educator Award
by Headmaster Rob Loia at the Teacher Appreciation Reception on October 6,
2011. Mr. Loia read the inscription on the certificate awarded to Mrs. Rush. “The
Academy Board of Trustees recognizes her long-standing commitment to the
students of Subiaco Academy and for regularly going above and beyond the call of
duty in service to them, developing their gifts to the best of her ability, the Subiaco
Academy Board of Trustees recognizes Chandra Rush.”

Abbey News
Tom Moncrief, Jr., Haneul Hong, and Branton Sims received
from Headmaster Rob Loia the Fr. Felix Memorial Scholarship
Awards at the school-wide assembly on October 14. Each of these
students, judged outstanding in their performance during the 2010-
2011 academic year in visual arts, received a $1,000.00 scholarship
and a certificate in recognition of dedication to the development of
outstanding talent in visual arts. Mr. Loia, noting the long tradition of
Benedictine emphasis on the arts, remarked that each artist “reflects a
little reflection of God” in his creative process.
Fr. Hugh Assenmacher outlined milestones in the life of his
friend and confrere, Fr. Felix Fredeman, who began teaching in the
art department of Subiaco Academy in 1965. Along with his priestly
ministry, he gave of his time and talent to teaching, administration,
graphic design, art-related skills, and directing technical theater. He was also responsible for designing the annual
abbey calendar and the community Christmas card. Fr. Felix was the system administrator of the Abbey’s first
computer network. One of his major projects included the preparation of computer layouts for the revision of the
Abbey’s Divine Office books. In 1999, after four decades of teaching, Fr. Felix retired from the classroom due to
failing health. Fr. Felix’s decades of love and service are engraved in the hearts and minds of many and in the very
soul of the Abbey and Academy.
The Abbey Angus Farm sold 28 cattle commercially in Oklahoma City in late October. Recently, the cattle
which had been pastured in the Gainesville, TX, area (thanks for Steve Schmitz ’91), have been shipped back to
Subiaco.
Abbot Jerome, Fr. Nicholas, Fr. Bruno, Br. Ephrem, and Br. Louis
joined alumni and friends for Mass and lunch in Lindsay on October 30,
2011. Representing the illustrious class of 1960 were John and Judy Hoberer,
Br. Ephrem, Jim and Cindy Gehrig.
The fitness center was moved from the fifth floor to a room
across from the health center. This move was necessary because the current
elevator in the health center can no longer be licensed. The decision to make this move came has a result of
the space utilization study provided by the National Retired Religious Organization. Subiaco has provided a Fitness
Center on the fourth and fifth floor since 1993, when the wellness program was offered to monks and Abbey employees.
The new fitness center is open and is easy for the elder monks in the heath center to visit. The remodeling
of the area was completed by the maintenance staff of Subiaco Abbey. The center was designed by Wallie Sprick
’77 of Wittenberg, Deloney & Davidson, Inc.
The center is under the supervision of the Health and Wellness Director, Rose Schneider, RN and health
center staff. Subiaco’s wellness program for the elder monks is being copied by many monasteries.
