Creating Your Dream Career
Beyond Your Chair
Jayne Morehouse
As you graduate and start on your journey
to becoming a beauty professional, everyone
will have lots of advice for you — whether
you ask for it or not — much of it focusing
on continuing your education.
But, in today’s world, it takes more than
taking a cutting or coloring class once or
twice a year to grow as a person and a professional
and work in your dream job.
Continuing your education in a meaningful
way today includes seeking out the information
— technical, marketing, customer
service, client engagement, sales and perhaps
even management — that will support the
professional brand you will design for yourself,
so that you’re fulfilled and
happy in the career of a lifetime.
In today’s world, you don’t
land a dream job. They simply
don’t exist. You can work for a
wonderful salon with a gracious
owner who is willing to create a
beautiful environment, mentor
you and invest in your development.
But it’s still up to you to invest your
own heart, time, initiative and money into
creating YOUR dream job — even if it’s in
that same salon.
Following are some important questions
to answer before you begin to plan how many
hours you’ll need to work each week and the
type of compensation you’ll expect.
Start by writing all of this information
down, and then refer back to it every month
as you have new experiences and meet new
people. The answers to all of these questions
will contribute to defining your own professional
brand.
What is YOUR dream job — not the job
others expect for you or what you’ve read
your supposed to do or even what your teachers
have told you?
What does it look like? What does it feel
like? Who are the clients you want to help
and why? What will you do that will help you
stand out from every other newly licensed
beauty professional?
What kind of environment do you need to
work in to allow you to do that? Do you want
to work by yourself or as part of a beauty
team? What beauty brands, products and tools
do you want to be associated with?
What words would you like your clients,
your community and other beauty professionals
use when describing you and your work?
Now, think of all of the people you’ve met
so far who fit within the career profile you’re
creating and can help you build your brand.
Contact the guest educators, VIPS and
local salon owners who have visited your
school and tell them what you’d like to
achieve; ask if they will share their story with
you, along with their advice and recommendations.
Attend local and even national trade
shows if you’re able to, join a professional
association and seek out mentors. Most will
be happy to help.
As you build your foundation, you’ll want
to plan for advanced learning. The more opportunities
you can create to try out various
techniques, styles and approaches to your
technical work, the better. Every one of the
elite stylists — both those who work in salons
as well as those who provide education for
product companies — practice on mannequin
heads constantly. Once they perfect the basic
techniques, they’re then able to create new
techniques that bear their signature.
However, honing your technical skills
But it’s still up to you to invest your
own heart, time, initiative and money
into creating YOUR dream job...
is only one part of the preparation for your
dream job. A deep understanding of client
communication and service skills, as well as
the ability to market yourself to clients and
any company you might want to work with in
the future, are at least, if not more important.
To get started, go online and find Chris
Brogan, Seth Godin and Peter Shankman,
three of the top thought leaders in customer
engagement today. Follow everything they do,
watch their numerous videos online and read
what they recommend.
Subscribe to their blogs and e-newsletters.
If you read six months to a year’s worth of
blogs from each, you’ll have everything you
need to know about building and keeping
your clientele — for FREE! They are
so invested in giving back that they give
away information daily that’s worth tens of
thousands of dollars. Take advantage of their
generosity.
Whether you want to work in a salon or
spa, as a session artist for celebrities, runway,
media, for a product company, at a cosmetology
school or on your own, defining your
dream job as specifically as possible right
now will help you create your own career of
a lifetime.
You Have Graduated, Now What?
By Sharon Wiser, Bella Institute School of Cosmetology
Congratulations! You have just finished
beauty school. Now what? In an ideal world,
you’d go beauty school, learn how to maximize
your talents, get your license and easily
land a job at a high-end salon.
That’s not typically the reality, though.
Don’t despair. You don’t have to be
resigned to spending your days living from
paycheck to paycheck. There are some things
you can do to land a great job.
EXAMINE YOUR GOALS. This is a
simple step, and one of the most overlooked.
You need to set professional goals, but first
you need to look within yourself. What
did you most enjoy about beauty or barber
school? Do you have a talent for creating
precision cuts? Are you extra creative with
color? You need to identify your creative
strengths and work with those.
If there is something that you absolutely
do not enjoy doing, then there is no reason
for you to have to do it for the long term.
Acknowledge your own strengths and market
them. Do you want to be a master stylist one
day? Is it your dream to be a top colorist?
You need to think about these things
when you are starting your job search. When
you first start school you should have a road
map of where you want to go and how you
are going to get there. The earlier the better.
When you set short and long-term goals it
keeps you focused and on the prize.
LOOK THE PART. Appearance matters
in the beauty industry. When you are heading
into the salons, shops or spas for interviews,
you will want to walk in as if you already
work there. Make sure your hair and makeup
are on trend and that you’re
dressed the part.
You want the salon hiring
team to be able to picture you on
the salon floor -right when they
meet you. This will make you
to appear more knowledgeable,
professional, and confident. You
may have heard this advice before
mentioned in the corporate world.
Interviewees are often advised to dress as
if they already have the position for which
they’re applying. The same can easily be
applied to the beauty industry.
KEEP ON LEARNING. What? The
truth is that learning never ends. You need
to keep learning. This industry is constantly
evolving. Make it a goal to regularly sign up
for advanced classes. For example if you are
sitting in your interview and you let the hiring
professional know that you have just finished
an advanced cutting class and that in two
NW Beauty Supplies
Email: nwbeautysupplies@gmail.com
months, you’re attending a coloring course
from a popular company, then you can and
will be much more marketable to the salon.
You have to stay on top of the latest trends
and techniques. When the salon sees that you
are aware of this and willing to keep learning,
you will already have a major edge over the
competition. In fact, another tip for when
you are being interviewed is to ask the hiring
professional about future educational activities
planned for the salon.
In an ideal world, you’d go beauty
school, learn how to maximize your
talents, get your license and easily
land a job at a high-end salon.
BE WILLING TO ASSIST. Why
should you even think of being an assistant
when you have gone through your training
and ready to be on your own? If you have
your heart set on being at an exclusive salon
(which will equate to more pay, generally,
with the higher cost of services), be aware
that you most likely will not get hired fresh
out of beauty school.
No one wants to be an assistant, but you
would be under the direct supervision and
training of one of the top stylists at the salon
and he or she will give you valuable feedback
about where your talents lie and how you can
improve. This is a great way to get your foot
in the door and land a full-time job all on
your own.
CREATE A LOOK BOOK /PORT-
FOLIO. It doesn’t have to be expensive, nor
does it have to be too fancy. Grab your friends
and family and take pictures to showcase
your work and your abilities. If you can walk
into the interview and have something to
show the salon manager that highlights your
talents, you will also have that extra edge to
get the job.
IT’S OKAY TO START OFF AT A
CHAIN. If you are having trouble finding
a job, there is nothing at all wrong with working
at a quick-paced chain. No, you will not
necessarily have a chance to build a clientele
or have that creative independence you would
have at a larger, higher end salon, but this will
keep you on target, especially in the cutting
arena. You don’t want to put those shears
down and stop using them. Practice, practice,
practice. It’s what makes you better. If you
need to, this is a great first step to heading
you off on the career path that you desire.
As a licensed professional for almost 40
years I wanted to share tips and thoughts on
what makes a successful stylist in 2013. Much
has changed but if you always go back to the
basics with everything you have learned and
done through the years you cant go wrong!
Leading With Blinders On by Neil Ducoff
Leaders have a unique ability to see what they want to see in their companies. They
see their people working away yet never see the mounting frustration their approach to
leadership is causing. As a result, trust erodes. Fiercely loyal employees begin to lose hope.
Contamination spreads through the company’s culture.
It’s Time to Speak Up For Yourself, Your Profession by Myra Irizarry
Like you, I have worked hard and earned my spot in my field. Throughout my time at
the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), representing your interests at both the state and
federal levels, you have educated me about the many challenges beauty professionals face: dishonest
business practices and individuals, lack of enforcement, state law makers undermining
regulations set in place to protect consumers, and a public that does not know the difference.
My (Twenty) First Year by Jaime Schrabeck
Last year, I celebrated my first 20 years as a licensed manicurist. I use the term “celebrated”
deliberately because it signifies my attitude toward the nail industry. Though it
seems unlikely after so many years, I’m more passionate and positive about our profession
than ever before.
Your First Year: Where to Begin?
Strictly for Students
Maggie Cruz
As a newly licensed hairdresser, you probably
think you are going to go out and land
that dream job.
Sorry, it just doesn’t work that way. You
may have been the school prodigy, praised
by your teachers and looked at in awe by the
newbies, but now you are just a little guppy
swimming in a big pond full of experienced
and extremely talented hairdressers.
There are choices to make, such as do
you go to a salon
and immediately
start working with
clients and making an
hourly wage, or are
you able to assist in a
salon with a mentor
who will train you in
all the finer points of
our industry so that in six months to a year
you are working in a high-end salon and have
your own chair?
You need to ask yourself, what is your
dream job and how do you get it?
If you decide to assist or join an apprenticeship
program for licensed hairdressers,
your best bet for finding people willing
to mentor you is by networking, usually
through your school.
Your school should have contacts with salons
in the area, and they know the salons and
the hairdressers who are willing to mentor
young stylists. They can guide you through
the process of finding a good mentor and also
make sure you are not just going to be used as
the salon flunky.
When looking for an assisting position,
you need to know who you will be assisting,
one person or the whole salon? Also, if you
are assisting more than one person, are you
working an hourly wage or for piece work,
which means you need to keep track of each
shampoo you do, each color you apply, etc.,
and you are paid for them at the end of the
day or week.
Most assisting jobs are at minimum wage,
but if you are in a busy salon and you are
making tips both from the stylist and from
the guests, you can make a good wage. Be
cautious, though, because in some salons the
stylist will buy you lunch and think that is
your tip… it is NOT!
A six dollar lunch is not your tip for eight
– 12 hours of hard work. If you are an assistant
for the whole salon, are you also able to
observe, work and learn from them, or are you
just sweeping hair and cleaning? You might
work like a dog, but never be treated like one!
Assisting is hard work, and this is how
...but now you are just a little
guppy swimming in a big
pond full of experienced and
extremely talented hairdressers.
we pay our dues to work in those high-end
salons. You should be a sponge in the salon,
soaking up new skills and knowledge. Every
day should be a day in which you come home
exhausted but motivated knowing that in that
day you honed your skills in order to become
a better stylist. A good assistant program
will even have you bring a model so you can
practice all you are learning in order to one
day be offered a chair in the salon.
A great mentor is someone who will be in
your life forever. My mentor is still a friend
after 25 years. They are the people who give
us the knowledge and confidence we need
to build clientele and even open our own
salons. The relationship
of the assistant
and mentor is special
and cannot be stressed
enough. Imagine being
the mentor and watching
your assistant a few years
down the road in a chair
next to you, fantastically
successful! That is really paying it forward.
If you are a stylist and you would like to
mentor a young stylist, the best way to do that
is to contact your local beauty school to get
involved. Some beauty schools, like Marinello
Schools of Beauty, have externship programs,
so students come to your salon and work for
one day a week while they are still in school.
In this externship, you can observe their
work ethic, the way they interact with you
and with clients, and just generally see if they
would be a good fit for your salon. Make sure
you are part of the schools’ advisory councils
and career fairs, so you can meet the staff and
the students in order to learn about them
before they graduate.
We all need mentors and this is the best
way to find a great mentor in our industry.
Those of us who have been in our industry
for a while and have so much to give to the
younger stylists should mentor. It is one of
the most satisfying things you can do for
yourself, and as a mentor, you keep your skill
set even sharper!
They say that there is no better way to
learn than to teach, and as a mentor, you are
teaching every day. As a school director, I
mentor more than 100 students and having
them come back year after year to tell me
how I made a difference in their lives is the
best reward of all. Get a mentor and be a
mentor, and if you really want your dream
job, assist someone who has it.
Beauty, she has served as Director at the Whittier and Paramount campuses
Cutting Edge Alternatives for Infection Control
Esthetic Endeavors
Judith Culp
In the beauty industry preventing crosscontamination
is important to our successful
operations. It is mandated by state rules and
CDC guidelines.
This is a good thing because it serves to
keep us and our clients healthy. It is something
that every client has a right to expect.
The downside of infection control is that
the majority of products available are corrosive,
toxic and dangerous to skin, eyes, and
clothing to say nothing about environmental
impact. Usage directions require personal
protective equipment be used when mixing
and handling, but this may be overlooked.
The manufacturer’s directions typically
require the surface be kept wet for 10
minutes and then to rinse thoroughly. With
some surfaces this can be a challenge and 10
minutes can be a long time when you have
another client waiting for their service. It’s
something we don’t like to think about, but
we have all seen situations where corners
are cut. If you find a disinfectant that works
faster, it is generally more corrosive.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was something
less toxic? Something better for the environment?
Ideally it wouldn’t be harmful to touch
or hazardous to use, but at the same time it
must be EPA registered. Well, such products
do exist and meet these “ideals” and more.
The discovery started well over half
a century ago in a joint venture by Dow
Corning to provide a new class of materials
for the military. Over time this technology
has evolved to address ever changing needs.
The researchers turned to “organo functional
silanes” which are a result of combining
organic and silicon chemistry.
There are many research documents out
there including the Dow Corning research
paper on the topic, organosilanes. Their
research led to multiple ways these organosilanes
could be developed and used in many
different types of manufacturing and product
development. They facilitate bonding so can
be used as protectants in diverse applications.
If your eyes are starting to glaze over, let’s
look at in easier to understand terms. This
technology is using positive ionic bonding
to adhere to a surface, or for components to
adhere more tightly together.
The science has been well researched,
documented and applied for over 50 years.
It has been used extensively in the semiconductor
industry and is a key reason our
microchips work so well. It is used in the garment
industry to repel microbes and keep the
garment fresh. In fact, it is in many industries
and manufactured products from rubber to
glass. Its applications seem endless.
So how does it work for our service based
industry? It is sprayed, or wiped on and
allowed to dry which happens very quickly.
Once dry it has bonded to the surface it was
applied to. Now it is like a barrier of positive
ionic swords, or an electro-magnetic field,
that attracts microbes and destroys them
upon contact. Because this is a physical
destruction there is no risk of microbial
mutation. The process doesn’t dilute the
barrier in any way so it continues protection
undiminished. This is completely different
from spraying a surface with a disinfectant
that as soon as it is dry can be immediately
contaminated again.
With issues like MRSA, the antibioticresistant
staph infection and other super bugs
mutating, the need is there to use disinfecting
processes that eliminate microbe mutation
and last for more than a few seconds.
Employing already existing protection
technology that had demonstrated it worked
for NASA, the military and the garment
industry, developers realized they could
provide products to disinfect and protect with
no harsh chemicals.
There are a number of formulators out
there that utilize the same core technology
but there are many variations between them.
This technology puts down a barrier that
can effectively continue its protection and
destruction capabilities for a month or more.
A single surface can be treated, or an entire
facility. Whatever is treated acts like an air
filter attracting and destroying microbes.
Variations on products have been created
to meet diverse needs of the various industries
wanting to use the technology. Some
products are specific for sensitive areas like
where raw food is being prepared. There are
cleaning/disinfecting products and there are
products designed to be used on a precleaned
surface to form a long term result.
There are products for use around electronics
like telephones, computer keyboards
and mice that also could be used to protect
equipment, or disinfect tools and sharps.
Some of the products can safely be applied to
all color fast surfaces.
When I got these products into my clinic
I started at the front door and disinfected
and protected all the surfaces clients might
touch. Door knobs, the reception counter,
telephones, computers, desk tops. After
vacuuming I lightly misted the reception
area including the seating and armrests – all
the places clients touch with their hands. I
moved on to the restrooms. Facial rooms got
beds stripped and then sprayed along with
counters and all commonly touched surfaces.
While daily cleaning will still occur, I now
have the peace of mind knowing I have made
my spa area safer for clients and my staff.
Haircoloring Education Event Returns to LA
The 2013 Energizing Summit presented by American Board of Certified Haircolorists
will be held June 9-10, 2013 at the LAX Marriott Airport in Los Angeles, California.
“This will to be a great year for the Energizing Summit, as we are lucky to introduce
some new talented educators and many popular educators from our past years,” states
Andre Nizetich, President of the American Board of Certified Haircolorist. “It is impossible
to learn haircoloring skills sitting in an audience of three hundred people watching
someone else put foils in the hair.”
Andre Nizetich will be back teaching “speed foiling” this year after an absence of four
years. Martin Parsons will be making his first appearance at the Summit this year. Others
presenting for the first time are Dennis Gebhart, Jill Ruone, Tom Maricich, Clauidio
Pascuzzo and Alima Korchinskaya.
There are 47 educators teaching 139 classes over two days. You must register and select
your classes prior to arrival. Most of the Summit classes are small (30 people) which make
for a lot of interaction and the opportunity to ask questions of the educators.
Hands-on classes are scheduled to last three hours. Educator John Siggers brings his
entire team of haircolorists from Atlanta to teach Balayage and Ombre techniques. Other
hands-on classes include Franco Marino of New York teaching the Marriage of Color and
Cut and Doug Martucci, also of New York, teaching Dimensional Mastery. Bonnie Ray, of
Bangor Maine, will be returning for her third year teaching Double Process Haircoloring.
There are many classes offered to aid those who are planning to become an American
Board Certified Haircolorist. If you plan to take the examination held in Los Angeles,
June 30,2013 or Dallas, July 14, 2013, it would be advisable to attend the Energizing Summit.
For more information visit www.haircolorist.com and sign up for classes.

Esthetics Scope of Practice Workgroup
At the January 28, 2013, Board of Cosmetology
meeting, Oregon Health Licensing
Agency (OHLA) Policy Analyst Randy
Harnisch reported that agency staff has had
a number of internal and external conversations
regarding the esthetics scope of practice.
Agency initial research regarding the
esthetics scope of practice discovered other
board’s practices with potentially overlapping
jurisdictions. The Oregon Medical Board,
Board of Nursing, and Board of Pharmacy
may have input regarding the following:
• Botox and other injectables
• Lasers
• Acidic exfoliants
“It became clear the agency could not
make decisions in a vacuum,” says Harnisch.
As a result, OHLA staff has proposed
a workgroup made up of individuals from
the Board of Cosmetology, Oregon Medical
Board, Board of Nursing, Board of Dentistry,
and the Board of Pharmacy. The group
potentially would do three things:
• Identify state agencies with applicable
expertise on the issues involved.
• Accurately assess the risks of using
injectables, lasers and acidic exfoliants.
• Recommend language that would be an
appropriate scope of practice for estheticians
and for the definition of “supervision.”
At the January 18 board meeting, board
member Peggy Zepp inquired if the workgroup
would consider the number of hours
required for the esthetic certification as part
of its work. Harnisch answered that everything
is on the table at this point.
The consensus of the board was to move
forward with the workgroup. OHLA Interim
Director Holly Mercer put the timeline for
beginning the work group as after the legislative
session had concluded, possibly in late
summer or fall of 2013.
During public comment at the meeting,
Elizabeth Pasko, Della Bella Acne and
Skin Care Center, expressed concern that
the cosmetology field, specifically esthetics,
should be well represented in the workgroup.
She also expressed concern that members
of the medical field are crossing into the
cosmetology field of practice. She suggested
skin professionals have their own board,
increased hours for esthetician licensure and
apprenticeships.
Board Chair Herb Hirst commented
that any change may be difficult, potentially
requiring legislative changes.
Monique Raab, Aesthetics Insitute,
advocated for a second tier of licensing for
advanced esthetics, particularly for lasers, and
other advanced skin care procedures.
Hirst expressed a concern for expanded
scope of practice affecting insurance rates.
Judith Culp, Northwest Institute of Esthetics,
stated that customers that experience
damage and problems with cosmetologists do
not inform the agency but inform the insurance
companies. Insurance companies by law
are not permitted to relate the problems with
the agency.
Cynthia Mendoza, Aesthetics Institute,
detailed the two types of esthetics students
she teaches: those who just want to do waxing
and a second group who want a career and
the opportunity to learn advanced procedures.
Mendoza stated she is concerned that
medical professionals will take portions of the
esthetics field for their practice.
Hirst commented that he didn’t think
the intent was to take anything away from
estheticians but to study the scope of practice.
OHLA Provides Testimony
on Natural Hair Care Bill
Following is testimony regarding House
Bill 3409. Please note that OHLA remains
neutral on proposed legislation that is not put
forth by the agency.
From: Holly Mercer, Interim Director,
Oregon Health Licensing Agency
(OHLA)
Re: HB 3409 – Natural Hair Care
WHAT THE MEASURE WOULD DO:
• Define natural hair care as “the braiding,
cornrowing, extending, lacing, locking,
sewing, twisting, weaving or wrapping of
human hair, natural fibers, synthetic fibers or
hair extensions through the use of hands or
simple devices, such as clips, combs, hairpins
or needle and thread.”
• Specifically exclude natural hair care
from current statutory definitions for cosmetology,
barbering and hair design.
• Authorize Oregon Board of Cosmetology
and the Oregon Health Licensing Agency
to regulate the practice of natural hair care.
• Exclude natural hair care from the existing
education requirements for hair design
and barbering.
• Require natural hair care practitioners
to obtain a facility license, meeting the same
safety and sanitation requirements as all other
cosmetology facilities.
• Authorize the Board of Cosmetology
and the Oregon Health Licensing Agency to
establish professional standards for natural
hair care providers and to ensure compliance
with the standards.
Background: Under current law, natural
hair care providers are required to obtain a
full hair design license, which requires 1,450
hours of education. This educational requirement
covers instruction on all components
of hair design practice, including the use of
chemicals and colorants. Natural hair care
practitioners do not typically use chemicals or
colorants, using hands and simple devices to
create braids and braided designs.
Solution: The Oregon Health Licensing
Agency would work with the Board of Cosmetology
to establish a licensing framework
for natural hair care providers to ensure that
providers meet the same safety and sanitation
requirements as all other cosmetology
licensees.
testimony from stakeholders, visit https://
Schools; the Beginning of a
Professional Career
By Ben Rogers
Cosmetology, esthetics, barbering, and
manicuring are all businesses of beauty. Going
to the hair salon or going to get your nails
done can be relaxing as well as boost your self
esteem. However, many people might not
want to patronize a salon or spa if the tools
have not been sanitized and disinfected or
proper safety and sanitation procedures are
not being followed. Hygienic practices are
crucial in the beauty professions for public
health and safety.
Few clients will walk into a salon, see
unsanitary conditions and agree to pay for services
there. Having a well trained and properly
licensed staff will help ensure your clients find
what they are looking for. The learning and
compliance with proper safety and sanitation
procedures begins in the schools.
So what does the Department of Licensing
do to ensure that schools are teaching students
the minimum requirements and holding them
accountable for learning safe practices?
The Department of Licensing has a
number of procedures in place to ensure
that schools are not only teaching safe and
sanitary practices but also accounting for the
time students are in the classroom/salon. The
department also approves the administration
of exams to reasonably measure an applicant’s
knowledge of safe and sanitary practice before
issuing a license.
Schools are subject to inspections just as
salons and spas; in fact, they are inspected
more frequently. At least two times per year
an inspector will be in a school to verify
records, ensure the school is maintaining
required safety and sanitation requirements,
and that minimum instruction guidelines
are being followed. These accountability
measures, along with approved written and
performance examinations, help to prepare a
student to safely enter their profession.
What can the state do if a school fails to
meet these minimum requirements? What
actions may take place upon finding unprofessional
conduct?
The disciplinary authority may issue
an order for various corrective actions to
include, but not limited to: revocation of the
license, suspension of the license, restriction
or limitation of practice, payment of a
fine, or the monitoring of the practice in a
manner directed. The department considers
the school’s role in preparing students for the
responsibility of consumer health and safety
as a highest priority and will employ every resource
to gain compliance. If those efforts fail
the department is prepared to move forward
with disciplinary actions in accordance with
RCW 18.235.
In the last six months the department has
investigated several schools accused of unprofessional
conduct. Through due process
the disciplinary authority has fined several
schools and revoked several school licenses.
The individual actions taken on each school
and any salon shop or operator can be found
at www.dol.wa.gov/business/disciplinary/
disciplinarycosme.html or seen in the
monthly NW Stylist newspaper.
This is merely an example of how serious
the department is in regards to our schools
providing the best training and preparation
of the new professionals within cosmetology,
barbering, esthetics, and manicuring practices.
If you moved and did not notify the department directly with your change of address use
one of the options listed below to update your information. It is important to remember that
submitting a change of address form to the United States Postal Service (USPS) will only stay
Mastering Mentoring
The Mane Objective
Marco Pelusi
If you can share …. and give, you can be
a mentor. So, where do I sign up for mentor
classes? And, how do I get my mentor
certificate? How much education do I need to
become a mentor?
All questions you may ask yourself when
contemplating becoming a mentor.
Exactly how do you become a mentor?
You’re closer than you think. Believe it or
not, you’re already a role model and a leader,
although you may not even recognize it. As a
hairdresser, you’ve been a role model for your
clients for years.
If you’re a salon owner or an educator,
by now you probably have motivated, if not
trained other hairdressers. So, guess what?
You’re a mentor! Congratulations!
Now, simply begin to identify yourself
as a mentor more formally. Not only will
you help clients and coworkers by doing so,
but you will also help yourself grow your
own business. Own up to the fact that you’re
talented in some way and share your talent
freely with others. Work on becoming a role
model to someone professionally and what do
you know? You’re mentoring.
It may very well be someone within your
own family you choose to mentor.
I was lucky enough to have grown up in
a family of beauty professionals and they all
still work tirelessly to be the best they can be
in their work. They are exemplary; so much
so that they inspired me at a very young age
to want to make a huge contribution myself
in this glorious industry of ours.
If you have children or relatives in the
business, perhaps consider mentoring them.
Show them what you’ve got. Teach them.
Give, give and give some more. I can’t tell
you how richly rewarding is this experience
and it all comes back to you in the end.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t have
family to mentor, nor to mentor you. I’ve
had lots of other wonderful mentors in the
beauty industry. If you’ve never had your own
personal mentor, or role model, find one. It’s
never too late.
Who has motivated you in this industry?
Who inspired you? Is it another hairdresser
in your salon? Is it a platform artist whose
work you admire? Discover who it is and if
possible find a way to contact him/her. When
you reach out to your potential role models,
the best statement to make is simply “I really
respect and admire your work.”
A compliment, professional to professional,
is the easiest way to start a conversation. Trust
me, recognizing your own personal mentor will
help you to step up to the plate and become
one yourself. Finding your own role model and
leader will help you become one.
Sometimes to be a role model can be
hard, especially to maintain that status and
it takes a lot of effort. Doing so requires
integrity and hard work. However, becoming
a mentor is extremely rewarding.
The word “mentor” refers to an experienced
adviser and supporter, someone more
experienced who advises and guides a less
experienced person. Is there a new assistant in
your salon who has less experience who can
benefit from your knowledge and help?
Take some time to think about who needs
guidance in your immediate vicinity. Giving to
others helps us forget about our own worries
and gives us the focus to be there for others.
Professionally, this can be a very smart move
for you because you will be rewarded and have
a newfound motivation for your own craft.
If you share your time and give of your
talents, you can be a mentor right now. No
sign-up, no training, no certificate…. you’re
closer than you think.
