PENTAMIX GNL
Thickening and retarding additive for gypsums
Technical Data Sheet October 2006
DESCRIPTION
Pentamix GNL is an additive in powder form specific for the preparation of
scagliolas made of high-quality gypsum. The product is heat-resistant; it is added at
the end of burning or on getting out of the kiln.
FEATURES
Pentamix GNL concentrates in a single product all the characteristics to give to a
scagliola for plaster.
Some minutes after the wetting in the batch box, the viscosity of scagliola
increases, so that it is possible to apply it immediately. That allows bringing idle time
down and using the whole wet mixture, while reducing or avoiding waste.
The product also contains a specific retarder that only acts in the absence of
hydrated lime. The normal quantity in the formula is sufficient to keep the wet
mixture active for about 75 minutes. Anyway this period can vary according to the
type of scagliola and the environmental conditions; it is therefore advisable to carry
out preliminary tests so as to adjust the times to the specific needs.
It is possible to arrange the quantity of retarder added in the production phase of
Pentamix GNL in order to obtain longer or shorter times.
In case of particular requirements or to modify the setting times autonomously, it is
possible to use the retarder Pentatard G5.
Pentamix GNL allows excellent smooth running of scagliola, so making all the
finishing operations easier, even in thin layers.
USE
Pentamix GNL is used as a sole additive in the production of scagliola for plasters
and in the preparation of premixed gypsum-based, hydrated lime-free smooth
finishes used as scagliola in layers up to 2-3 mm thick.
The product is normally added to scagliola on going out of the kiln, before the
ensilage, always keeping in mind that the additive must disperse homogeneously.
Pentamix GNL / 2 Technical Data Sheet October 2006
DOSAGE
The normal dosage of Pentamix GNL ranges between 0.05% and 0.1% of the
weight of scagliola, depending on the expected effect.
STORAGE AND
VALIDITY
Pentamix GNL has 12-month validity beginning with delivery, if it is stored in a dry
place and in the original bags kept perfectly closed. Should moisture be absorbed
by the product, this does not affect its efficaciousness, but it makes its dosage
difficult and the dispersion in the finished mixture not homogeneous.
It is therefore advisable to close bags carefully after each collection.
PRECAUTIONS
Pentamix GNL is harmless both by contact and by ingestion.
It is easily removable from any surface with water and soap.
Inhalation can cause a slight irritation of the first part of the respiratory tract, so it is
advisable to use a dust mask.
In case of accidental loss it must be picked up in the dry state and discharged in an
authorised waste dump.
Dry-clean the surfaces avoiding the use of water: it makes surfaces slimy and
dangerous
Do not disperse the product and the bags in the environment.
PACKING
25-kilo paper bags
