A SKIN THAT
DOES NOT HEAL
FROM WITHIN
IS A SKIN THAT
WILL AGE FASTER…

LA RECHERCHE
A MAJOR DISCOVERY
BY GUERLAIN RESEARCH
THE REASON FOR WRINKLES AND LOSS OF FIRMNESS:
“MICRO-TEARS” IN SKIN TISSUE
For the first time, Guerlain focuses on the
presence of micro-tears: molecular microtrauma
for the skin. They cause the dermis to
“sink in” and are responsible for skin ageing
due to a localised reduction of substance.
Micro-tears are the result of tissue breakdown
produced by internal tension and
stress, particularly mechanical, to which the
skin is subjected every day. With the passage of
time, the skin can no longer repair itself as
effectively on its own. It is less able to “heal”
its internal micro-damage: wrinkles and loss
of firmness settle in.
To counteract these problems, the skin’s own
ability to repair these “micro-tears” must be
reactivated.
LA RECHERCHE
REPRODUCING HEALING
MECHANISMS
Guerlain Research has demonstrated that the
tissue reconstruction process, responsible for the
repair of both wrinkles and loss of firmness, shares
biological factors with the healing process.
Dr Frédéric Bonté,
Director of Guerlain Research
How does the phenomenon of skin micro-tears occur?
“As it ages, the dermal tissue, which supports the
epidermis, becomes more or less destructured due to
micro-trauma to the fibres and macromolecules. The
tissue becomes less plump and less firm. Wrinkles
deepen. To give you a better idea, we can compare
these fibres to the springs in a mattress. If these
springs are cut, the mattress simply loses its bounce.”
What is the link between healing, wrinkles and firmness?
“Guerlain Research has always been interested in the
healing phenomenon. By focusing our anti-ageing
research programmes on this theme, we noticed a parallel
between the two phenomena. With the passing time, the
skin is damaged and weakened by micro-trauma in the
epidermis, dermis and on a cellular level.”
This major discovery led Guerlain scientists to
explore a new range of action. The work studied
by an eminent specialist of healing and cellular
reconstitution, Professor Alexis DESMOULIÈRE.
Interview
professor alexis desmoulière,
professor of physiology at the faculty of
pharmacy of the university of limoges
How does the skin repair
itself?
hampering its suppleness
and firmness too much.”
“It relies on precise mechanisms,
three phases that lead
to tissue repair.
What is the difference
between healing and regeneration?
1st phase: urgent repair
We see the deposit of a ‘provisional’
matrix, mainly composed
of fibrin, which ‘seals’
the trauma of the wound.
Cells secrete growth factors
and attract fibroblasts to
begin reconstruction of the
damaged tissue.
“A scar (healing) is the proof
of a repair process that carries
out approximate tissue
reconstruction. In most
cases, it is aesthetically unpleasing.
Extensive research
work is currently underway
to reduce the presence of
scars and allow for the development
of regeneration
2nd phase: localised filling
Fibroblasts migrate to the
‘provisional’ matrix to fill in
the wound by secreting a
more solid matrix to allow
new tissue to develop. This is
called ‘budding’ tissue.
mechanisms leading to optimal
reconstruction. Various
products make it possible
to guide repair in order to
obtain the most functional
tissue possible: this is regeneration
rather than healing.
Regeneration essentially
3rd phase: tissue remodelling
The fibroblasts, which were
highly active during the formation
of the budding tissue,
now secrete proteases,
enzymes that reorganise the
extracellular matrix. The skin
develops processes to make
depends on a deposit and
consistent reorganisation of
the matrix, which explains
the major role played by
fibroblasts. These cells secrete
not only the matrix,
to fill the wound, but also
proteases that are capable
the healed tissue as functional
of effectively reorganis-
as possible, without ing this matrix during
the
remodelling phase in order
to obtain new tissue that is
as perfect as possible.”
What is the link between
micro-tears and wrinkles?
“A wrinkle is mainly a problem
on the dermal level,
which contains fibroblasts
and the matrix that supports
and nourishes the epidermis.
The dermis is the location of
micro-tears, which can lead to
the appearance of wrinkles
over time. This can gradually
cause a deterioration of the
epidermis. Furthermore, the
dermis has a lower regeneration
capacity than the epidermis
(which contains stem
cells continuously involved in
the normal replacement of
the epidermis). An epidermis
appears healthy and beautiful
if the underlying dermis and
matrix that it contains are functional
and correctly repaired
in the case of wounds.”
How does the skin repair
its internal micro-tears?
“Micro-tears are the
result of tissue breakdown
produced by internal
tension and stress to which
the skin is subjected every
day. This deteriorates the
matrix proteins, which lose
their functional properties.
The skin has the natural
ability to self-regenerate.
With this aim, it involves the
fibroblasts and stimulates
them so that they will
reconstitute a matrix to
eventually fill wrinkles and
ensure the skin’s firmness
and suppleness.”
Prof. Alexis Desmoulière
After studying pharmaceutical science and writing a
scientific thesis, he joined a laboratory in Geneva, where
he researched tissue repair. He then worked with the
CNRS in Lyon, and then in Bordeaux, where he helped
create an INSERM team. Since 2006, he has been a
Physiology Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the
University of Limoges, where he studies wound healing,
together with Prof. Descottes.
a philosophy:
integrate
the best of nature
Guerlain Research takes an ongoing approach to
use the best that nature has to offer in order to
provide maximum effectiveness. In this context, it
has aimed at understanding and translating the key
messages that influence the activation of healing
and thus the natural self-repair of the skin.
Its research led it to identify natural bee products,
which are known to be some of the world’s most
effective natural healing substances. They are
capable of giving a cosmetic care product the most
power to fight wrinkles and loss of firmness.
THE HEALING POWER
OF BEE PRODUCTS
10

IN THE BEGINNING:
THERE WAS THE BEE

L’ABEILLE
THE BEE:
NATURE’S ALCHEMIST…
“nothing is more like a soul
than a bee.
it moves
from flower to flower
as a soul
moves from star to star,
and brings back honey
as a soul brings back light.”
Victor Hugo, Quatre Vingt Treize
The bee plays a vital role in nature’s flora. It is a pollinator and
guardian of the environment. It is also the symbol of life and the soul…
Nature’s pharmacist, the bee accompanied mankind since the dawn
of time. Born from the tears of the sun god Ra, it is depicted in the
hieroglyphs of the car touches of the Pharaohs of Lower Egypt. It was
the symbol of Ar temis (goddess of fer tility), as well as that of the
Promised Land and the resurrection of Christ. Enlivening the land
and sky, it is the emblem of royalty, the royal banner of the father of
Clovis (Merovingian King Childeric I) and later of Louis XII.
To associate himself with this oldest emblem of sovereignty, Napoleon
Bonapar te had it pictured on his imperial coat, as of 1804, and then
on the gold coat of arms of prestigious dignitaries.
17

L’ABEILLE
THE BEE:
A GUERLAIN EMBLEM SINCE 1828
1828 - Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain seals the destiny between Guerlain
and the bee forevermore and makes it his trademark…
In 1853, this illustrious perfumer dedicated the Eau de Cologne
Impériale to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, in homage to
her beauty. The bottle was decorated with gold-lacquered bees,
symbols of the Empire. From that point on, he became the Royal
supplier and appointed perfumer of the great European courts.
From one generation to the next, and still today, the bee would remain
engraved in the life and on the exceptional bottles of the House of Guerlain.
Already convinced and fascinated by the richness of bee products and
of their healing power, Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain used them to
create beauty care products, such as the “Almond and Honey Paste” in
1840, a skin-embellishing balm that met with considerable success.
little did he know that, 170 years later,
his research would take on an entirely new dimension…
18

L’ABEILLE
bee products:
some of the world’s most effective
healing substances.
honey: nectar plus ultra. Honey is a natural product and a universal
ingredient. It has been considered as a symbol of richness and life by all
great civilisations. Used to dress and heal wounds, it still plays a major
role in traditional medicine. It is renowned for its medicinal, antiseptic
and healing properties, but also prized for its skin-softening power.
Honey, royal jelly… The bee turns to nature to create products with
wonderful repair properties. Experiments conducted in hospitals
– notably the particularly remarkable tests by Professor Bernard
Descottes – demonstrated that cer tain bee products have natural
healing power.
A unique experiment and a decisive encounter for Guerlain Research.
Professor Descottes, the Chief of Ser vice of visceral surger y and
transplantation at the Limoges teaching hospital, has experimented
with honey dressing for 25 years and tested hundreds of varieties of
honey from all over the world. He has treated over 3,000 patients,
notably those who do not respond to or who respond poorly to
treatments from the classic pharmacopoeia. He thereby demonstrated
that the use of honey allows for much more rapid healing.
these results were recognised by the scientific community
at the last two international congresses
addressing tissue repair.*
* From August 25th to 29th, 2009, in Limoges, France, the 5th Joint Congress of the European Tissue Repair Society and the Wound
Healing Society (USA) with the participation of the Australian Wound Management Association, the Australasian Wound & Tissue Repair
Society and the Japanese Society for Wound Healing.
From January 17th to 19th, 2010, the 14th National Conference of Wound Management and Healing at the Palais des Congrès,
Porte Maillot, Paris.
Why are beehive products so effective on healing?
“The long-renowned regenerating powers of honey were demonstrated more
recently on ‘rebellious’ wounds that refuse to heal using classic treatments
currently available. Beehive products have a complex matrix of substances
capable of acting consistently on the numerous targets that act as key factors in
skin regeneration mechanisms.” Professor Alexis Desmoulière.
L’ABEILLE
EACH PRODUCT THAT BEES CREATE
IS A UNIQUE AND COMPLEX ALCHEMY
MAN CANNOT REPLICATE.
Honey: a living product
Honey is a natural product that comes from flowers and the extremely complex
activity of bees. On average, it contains 80% sugar, but very little sucrose. Sucrose
is hydrolysed by the natural action of enzymes (glycosyl hydrolases) produced by
the bee and transforms into fructose and glucose. This is what is called “inverted
sugar”, a specific feature that gives honey its very thick “liquid gold” texture.
Being rich in sugar, it is an incredible source of fuel for the cells. It has been shown
that fibroblasts, the dermal cells that ensure the skin’s suppleness and elasticity,
love the energising power of fructose, which allows for their lasting and strong
cellular growth. Its healing power is a result of sugar and its organic components.
Finally, it has a high content of B vitamins (B2, B3, B5), minerals (calcium, copper,
iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, etc.) and antioxidant molecules.
22

L’ABEILLE
Guerlain DECODES
THE SOURCE OF ITS POWER
The healing power of cer tain bee products is closely linked to the
richness of their ecosystem, the purity of the environment, but also the
genetic make-up of the bee.
The richness of the ecosystem in which the bee gathers nectar gives each
product its floral imprint, providing it with certain specific properties.
The purity of the environment is also essential in the manufacturing of their
products. Bees faithfully reproduce the environment in which they live.
While the biodiversity of plant species is well known, the diversity and
genetic specificity of bees is unique: the products that they produce
cannot be explained only through the floral species from which they
gather nectar.
As a result, each bee product is multi-faceted. Not all of these products
have healing action and not all work in the same way.
The study of haplotypes (all of the different genes present and
genetically linked on a single chromosome) allowed researchers to
uncover the specificity and genetic diversity of colonies. Guerlain
uses this multi-faceted approach, featured in its research focus, the
philosophy of integrative biology, to select the best raw materials
derived from various bee products from different regions of the world.
25

L’ABEILLE
A UNIQUE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME,
SHEDDING A NEW LIGHT
ON BEE PRODUCTS
In order to understand the subtle and complex natural equation that
determines the effectiveness of bee products, Guerlain Research has
undertaken a vast honey and royal jelly screening programme worldwide,
taking into account these three different criteria: the quality of the
environment, biodiversity and the genetic make-up of the bee.
This scientific programme led Guerlain Research to surround itself
with the best specialists of bees and their products and to form close
partnerships that encompass different aspects:
The origin of bees: their types and the different ecosystems where
they gather nectar;
The chemical composition of honeys, to the extent of identifying their
minor components;
The biological properties of honeys and royal jellies and, in particular,
their properties on the skin’s metabolism.
BY CREATING THIS RESEARCH PLATFORM,
GUERLAIN CAN THUS CONTROL THE PRODUCTION AND QUALITY
OF THE RAW MATERIALS USED AND
CONTINUE ITS RESEARCH ON THE BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
OF BEE PRODUCTS.
26

L’ABEILLE
I
THE BLACK BEE FROM OUESSANT:
A PURITY BENCHMARK
Guerlain Research discovered an extraordinary bee: the Black Bee
from Ouessant. The purity of Ouessant Island (French Brittany), its
pollution- and parasite-free environment, its invigorating climate and
its wild landscape are the ideal setting for bee colonies. With no
predators or illnesses on the island, the Black Bees are free to gather
nectar from the wilderness to produce honey of exceptional purity.
The analysis of Ouessant honey and of the black bees in their biotope
(air, flora, soil) allowed Guerlain Research to develop a char ter in
which Ouessant honey is the standard of purity used to evaluate the
quality of products collected from all over the world. This quality
charter also allows beekeepers to optimise the gathering conditions
of all steps in the production chain.
In this way, Guerlain makes a commitment to ensure the future of the
rare production of the island and to maintain this “bee conservatory”,
which is so precious in the study and preservation of bees.
The Black Bee (Apis mellifera mellifera)
This age-old species was very common in the 18th century and populated
Western Europe. Over time, the Black Bee became rare, the victim of toxic
products, viruses and predators. In 1987, to protect and ensure the future
of this wonderful Celtic Black Bee in its local ecotype, the beekeepers of the
Finistère region founded a conservatory hive on Ouessant Island. It protects this
population of bees from the hybridisation, illnesses and genetic pollution that
affect those of the continent. The island is now populated with 30 colonies.
AN INFINITE LIFE SOURCE
Pure Royal Concentrate,
a unique blend
with exceptional repairing power

LE PUR CONCENTRÉ ROYAL
A UNIQUE SYNERGY:
PURE ROYAL CONCENTRATE
Born from the power and specificity of productions of different bee
populations selected from the biological honey and royal jelly selection
programme, the Pure Royal Concentrate by Guerlain Research is a
blend of exclusive elements capable of activating key factors of the
skin’s self-repair mechanisms.*
Ouessant honey, thyme honey, clover honey from New Zealand,
French royal jelly… Each product was tested on factors identified by
biological research in order to determine its activity and performance
on the skin.
* In vitro test
AN EXCLUSIVE ALCHEMY
TO REPAIR AND RECONSTRUCT “MICRO-TEARS”*
AT THE ORIGIN OF WRINKLES
AND LOSS OF FIRMNESS.
37

LE PUR CONCENTRÉ ROYAL
PURE ROYAL CONCENTRATE:
EXCEPTIONAL REPAIRING POWER.
The Pure Royal Concentrate is an exclusive and carefully dosed**
composition that stimulates the key mechanisms of the healing process
within the skin* to help continuously repair wrinkles and promote
tissue firmness.
The ingredients of the Pure Royal Concentrate act on key biological
factors involved in tissue reconstruction:
1. Migration of cells to damaged areas.
A first impor tant step involves the migration of cells that will reconstruct
the skin. We see a 63% stimulation of cellular mobility after 16 hours.*
Fibroblasts re-colonise “micro-tears” and are now in position to begin
reconstruction.
2. Tissue “production”.
The skin repairs itself and creates new “substance”. Beta 1,4-Gal-1,
galactosidase transferase, is a key enzyme of the healing process. It
plays a role in the deposit of essential collagen.
This enzyme is stimulated by 158% in 24 hours.*
1
3. Tissue remodelling.
The last key step: the reconstructed material must restructure and
tighten itself to ensure skin firmness. We obser ve the stimulation of a
key protein that activates the tensing of reconstructed tissues: a 176%
increase in 24 hours.*
Finally, we obser ve the activation of HMGB1, a multifactor protein
involved in several steps of healing, increased by 116% in 24 hours.*
The presence of this biomarker reflects high-quality healing.
* In vitro test ** Patent pending
Proven action on the skin after three weeks
A tailor-made in vivo procedure was developed to evaluate the action of the
product on the skin and the quality of repair in the presence of stress.
After three weeks, the skin’s self-repair capacity is significantly improved and
its skin barrier is twice as resistant to stress. The skin’s permeability diminishes,
which means that its resilience is improved:*
LE PUR CONCENTRÉ ROYAL
Interview
Dr. Frédéric Bonté,
DIRECTOR OF GUERLAIN RESEARCH
What effect does the Pure Royal
Concentrate have on “micro-tears”?
“The skin has an innate selfrepair
programme that allows it to
reconstruct itself on different levels via
a chain reaction of key mechanisms: the
migration of cells to damaged areas, the
stimulation of the reconstruction of the
extracellular matrix, the activation of
the contractile forces of the fibroblasts
and the restructuring of the collagen
fibre network, etc.
The Pure Royal Concentrate acts
like an ‘orchestra leader’ to set into
motion and activate the combination
of these mechanisms that participate
in the skin’s self-repair and stimulate
the activation of target genes.”
Does this mean that the Pure Royal
Concentrate encourages the creation
of new skin substance?
“The objective is to redensify the matrix
and reconstruct the matrix tissue by
encouraging the production of skin
substance, collagen and repair tissues
and by putting fibres under tension.
The Pure Royal Concentrate boosts
the migration of cells to zones in need
of repair. It acts on cells in a targeted
way to promote new colonisation
of fibroblasts on the level of ‘microtears’
and allow the skin to perfectly
reconstruct itself wherever necessary.
As each skin has its own recognition
system, the cells know where they must go
to organise repair. Somewhat like a GPS!”
GUERLAIN’S CHEMISTRY EXPERTISE TO ENHANCE BEE PRODUCTS
An unprecedented formulation challenge: construct an effective sensory formula
using products with multi-faceted complexity and particular properties.
The choice of honey and royal jelly as cosmetic raw materials had a direct
influence on the selection of the formula’s raw materials, the operational
mode used for its production and, finally, the stability of the final product. The
formulation methods, the crafting of the raw materials and the operational
mode were revamped to adapt to the ancestral know-how of beekeepers: the
addition of ingredients in the formula at a temperature as close as possible to
that of the beehives and the solubilisation of active ingredients to prevent the
crystallisation of sugars.
This structure made it possible to develop a formula with extremely fine-worked
organoleptic properties capable of boosting the diffusion of active ingredients:
– On the surface, for evanescent comfort (specific emollient oils) and an incredible
skin finish (light-reflecting powders);
– In the skin, for targeted effectiveness.
LE PUR CONCENTRÉ ROYAL
A FRESH AND SUNNY FRAGRANCE,
BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH
At Guerlain, the creation of a skincare product always goes hand
in hand with the delicate work of the perfumer : the culmination of
expertise to offer the experience of precious moments.
The star ting point for this sunny nectar was beeswax absolute
with its fresh, light and honeyed scents. These notes are echoed by
reassuring and nourishing yellow wildflowers: mimosa and broom.
The heart of the fragrance took form.
At this point, the perfumer pursued the bee’s work by exploring the
air to gather neighbouring scents and touches of fresh grass to give
the fragrance its lightness, cheerfulness and flight.
LE PUR CONCENTRÉ ROYAL
A SLEEK BOTTLE,
A FOCUS ON SIMPLICITY AND PRECISION
The precision of a dropper meets a bottle with refined beauty,
sculpted in a honeycomb shape and crowned with the Abeille Royale
seal, a Guerlain emblem.
For the ultimate fine detail, a golden button dispenses just the right
amount of serum for a single application in two pumps.
Apply ABEILLE ROYALE Youth Serum Firming Lift, Wrinkle Correction
every day to the face and neck before your day and night cream.
1-Unscrew the cap and press the button twice, without removing the dropper
from the bottle.
2-Remove the dropper from the bottle and press again to release the formula
onto your hand or directly onto your face.
