How does the phenomenon of skin micro-tears occur?
“As it ages, the dermal tissue, which supports the
epidermis, becomes more or less destructured due to
micro-trauma to the fibres and macromolecules. The
tissue becomes less plump and less firm. Wrinkles
deepen. To give you a better idea, we can compare
these fibres to the springs in a mattress. If these
springs are cut, the mattress simply loses its bounce.”
What is the link between healing, wrinkles and firmness?
“Guerlain Research has always been interested in the
healing phenomenon. By focusing our anti-ageing
research programmes on this theme, we noticed a parallel
between the two phenomena. With the passing time, the
skin is damaged and weakened by micro-trauma in the
epidermis, dermis and on a cellular level.”
This major discovery led Guerlain scientists to
explore a new range of action. The work studied
by an eminent specialist of healing and cellular
reconstitution, Professor Alexis DESMOULIÈRE.

if the underlying dermis and
matrix that it contains are functional

How does the skin repair
its internal micro-tears?
“Micro-tears are the
result of tissue breakdown

After studying pharmaceutical science and writing a
scientific thesis, he joined a laboratory in Geneva, where
he researched tissue repair. He then worked with the
CNRS in Lyon, and then in Bordeaux, where he helped
create an INSERM team. Since 2006, he has been a
Physiology Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the
University of Limoges, where he studies wound healing,
together with Prof. Descottes.

The bee plays a vital role in nature’s flora. It is a pollinator and
guardian of the environment. It is also the symbol of life and the soul…
Nature’s pharmacist, the bee accompanied mankind since the dawn
of time. Born from the tears of the sun god Ra, it is depicted in the
hieroglyphs of the car touches of the Pharaohs of Lower Egypt. It was
the symbol of Ar temis (goddess of fer tility), as well as that of the
Promised Land and the resurrection of Christ. Enlivening the land
and sky, it is the emblem of royalty, the royal banner of the father of
Clovis (Merovingian King Childeric I) and later of Louis XII.
To associate himself with this oldest emblem of sovereignty, Napoleon
Bonapar te had it pictured on his imperial coat, as of 1804, and then
on the gold coat of arms of prestigious dignitaries.

THE BEE:
A GUERLAIN EMBLEM SINCE 1828
1828 - Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain seals the destiny between Guerlain
and the bee forevermore and makes it his trademark…
In 1853, this illustrious perfumer dedicated the Eau de Cologne
Impériale to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, in homage to
her beauty. The bottle was decorated with gold-lacquered bees,
symbols of the Empire. From that point on, he became the Royal
supplier and appointed perfumer of the great European courts.
From one generation to the next, and still today, the bee would remain
engraved in the life and on the exceptional bottles of the House of Guerlain.
Already convinced and fascinated by the richness of bee products and
of their healing power, Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain used them to
create beauty care products, such as the “Almond and Honey Paste” in
1840, a skin-embellishing balm that met with considerable success.

ingredient. It has been considered as a symbol of richness and life by all
great civilisations. Used to dress and heal wounds, it still plays a major
role in traditional medicine. It is renowned for its medicinal, antiseptic

Honey, royal jelly… The bee turns to nature to create products with
wonderful repair properties. Experiments conducted in hospitals
– notably the particularly remarkable tests by Professor Bernard
Descottes – demonstrated that cer tain bee products have natural

Professor Descottes, the Chief of Ser vice of visceral surger y and
transplantation at the Limoges teaching hospital, has experimented
with honey dressing for 25 years and tested hundreds of varieties of
honey from all over the world. He has treated over 3,000 patients,
notably those who do not respond to or who respond poorly to
treatments from the classic pharmacopoeia. He thereby demonstrated
that the use of honey allows for much more rapid healing.

Honey: a living product
Honey is a natural product that comes from flowers and the extremely complex
activity of bees. On average, it contains 80% sugar, but very little sucrose. Sucrose
is hydrolysed by the natural action of enzymes (glycosyl hydrolases) produced by
the bee and transforms into fructose and glucose. This is what is called “inverted
sugar”, a specific feature that gives honey its very thick “liquid gold” texture.
Being rich in sugar, it is an incredible source of fuel for the cells. It has been shown
that fibroblasts, the dermal cells that ensure the skin’s suppleness and elasticity,
love the energising power of fructose, which allows for their lasting and strong
cellular growth. Its healing power is a result of sugar and its organic components.
Finally, it has a high content of B vitamins (B2, B3, B5), minerals (calcium, copper,
iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, etc.) and antioxidant molecules.

The healing power of cer tain bee products is closely linked to the
richness of their ecosystem, the purity of the environment, but also the
genetic make-up of the bee.
The richness of the ecosystem in which the bee gathers nectar gives each
product its floral imprint, providing it with certain specific properties.
The purity of the environment is also essential in the manufacturing of their
products. Bees faithfully reproduce the environment in which they live.
While the biodiversity of plant species is well known, the diversity and
genetic specificity of bees is unique: the products that they produce
cannot be explained only through the floral species from which they
gather nectar.
As a result, each bee product is multi-faceted. Not all of these products
have healing action and not all work in the same way.
The study of haplotypes (all of the different genes present and
genetically linked on a single chromosome) allowed researchers to
uncover the specificity and genetic diversity of colonies. Guerlain
uses this multi-faceted approach, featured in its research focus, the
philosophy of integrative biology, to select the best raw materials
derived from various bee products from different regions of the world.

THE BLACK BEE FROM OUESSANT:
A PURITY BENCHMARK
Guerlain Research discovered an extraordinary bee: the Black Bee
from Ouessant. The purity of Ouessant Island (French Brittany), its
pollution- and parasite-free environment, its invigorating climate and
its wild landscape are the ideal setting for bee colonies. With no
predators or illnesses on the island, the Black Bees are free to gather
nectar from the wilderness to produce honey of exceptional purity.
The analysis of Ouessant honey and of the black bees in their biotope
(air, flora, soil) allowed Guerlain Research to develop a char ter in
which Ouessant honey is the standard of purity used to evaluate the
quality of products collected from all over the world. This quality
charter also allows beekeepers to optimise the gathering conditions
of all steps in the production chain.
In this way, Guerlain makes a commitment to ensure the future of the
rare production of the island and to maintain this “bee conservatory”,
which is so precious in the study and preservation of bees.
The Black Bee (Apis mellifera mellifera)
This age-old species was very common in the 18th century and populated
Western Europe. Over time, the Black Bee became rare, the victim of toxic
products, viruses and predators. In 1987, to protect and ensure the future
of this wonderful Celtic Black Bee in its local ecotype, the beekeepers of the
Finistère region founded a conservatory hive on Ouessant Island. It protects this
population of bees from the hybridisation, illnesses and genetic pollution that
affect those of the continent. The island is now populated with 30 colonies.

An unprecedented formulation challenge: construct an effective sensory formula
using products with multi-faceted complexity and particular properties.
The choice of honey and royal jelly as cosmetic raw materials had a direct
influence on the selection of the formula’s raw materials, the operational
