Mission In the spirit of the Gospel, we are committed to

Accreditation Akron’s first institution for Catholic,
coeducational secondary education, chartered by the State
of Ohio and accredited by the North Central Association
of Secondary Schools and Colleges since 1950. STVM is
also accredited by the Ohio Catholic Schools Accreditation
Association.
Leadership Locally owned and controlled by an
independent Board of Trustees in cooperation with the
President, Headmaster, administrative team, faculty, parents,
and support organizations, and with religious direction from
the Diocese of Cleveland.
Teacher/Student Ratio 1 classroom teacher per 15 students.
Graduates An average of 98% of St. Vincent-St. Mary
graduates enroll in four year colleges and universities across
the country immediately upon graduation, with the majority
of students awarded scholarships and grants. The Class of
2012 earned $13.5 million.

The merging of Akron’s first two Catholic schools,
St. Mary and St. Vincent, is portrayed in the
official crest of STVM. Featured in gold on a
green background are a cross, a torch, and a plow
and sword. The cross symbolizes the religious
foundation of the school. The torch, symbolizing
learning, differs from traditional designs in that
it is held by two hands, one representing each school. The plow
and sword symbolize commitment to social justice and were part
of the crest of the late Bishop Clarence Issenman, who directed the
formation of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

•Ohio Academy of Science District Science Fairs held at The University
of Akron and Mt. Union – 17 STVM students earned a total of 26 special
awards and a total of 19 students advanced to State Science Day
competition in Columbus
• State Science Day – STVM Inquiry Team received the Harold C. Shaw
Outstanding School Award and earned over $343,000 in scholarship
opportunities and cash awards
• Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) – 12 STVM
students participated and took home 22 special awards along with one
Intel Grand Prize
• ABIA Best Medicine Fair held at Inventor’s Hall of Fame in Akron – 11
STVM awardees including top honors for participation in the ABIA Summer
Institute
• STVM/The University of Akron Research Experience – 15 STVM students
participated at the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
and an additional 5 students worked with the scientists at APV Engineered
Coatings, a local STEM company
• National Merit Scholars – two seniors

I have been blessed to be a part of this
wonderful STVM community for nearly 40
years, and especially the past two and half
years as part of the administration. In keeping
with our mission statement, it is easy to see
that our students remain our top priority
and focus. Our success as faculty, staff and
administrators can only be measured by the
success of our students and their academic
achievement, extra curricular activities and spiritual development.
It is not surprising that our list of clubs, organizations and athletic
venues continue to grow each year.
We are fortunate to have some of the finest coaches and advisors
in the area. Our coaches provide our student athletes with the
qualities needed to ensure they understand that excellence in any
sport is determined by the academic achievement in the classroom.
This excellence creates support of our school among its constituent
groups including students, alumni and friends, and fans at all levels.
We, the administrators, faculty and staff look forward to a very
successful fall sports season from our Football, Cheer, Boys and Girls
Soccer, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Tennis, Boys and
Girls Golf, and Volleyball teams. We wish them all the very best and
look forward to a great season for all our athletes.

With your support, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School makes
available the opportunity for every student to participate while
promoting good sportsmanship, integrity, and performance that is
consistent with our mission and the Catholic education maintained
in our classrooms. After watching the student-athletes prepare this
summer for their upcoming seasons and talking to our coaches, we

Tradition is much more than a word of
inspiration at STVM. Tradition is real, and the
past year saw our traditions extended into
numerous champions again and again. The
newspaper pages and the TV reports were
focused on our students, our exceptional
academic programs such as the wonderful
science curriculum, our athletes, our musicians
and actors. You saw our rockets fly in Virginia
and our band march in New York City. Our student body did a
raucous “send off” to each of these groups in support of their great
accomplishments.
The fall sports season is especially exciting because so many
students are involved. The arch rivalries make each sport more fun,
and the fans in the stands bring that sense of community support and
alumni memories full circle. We anticipate repeating the successes
of the past. Our 100 years of history remain ever present as our
teams walk onto the fields and courts to begin each new school year.
I congratulate Tom Carone on his new title as President of the
school. Also, we have named Tony Casalinuovo as our Dean of
Students. Both exceptional men are alums of the school and look
forward to leading and enjoying the students, faculty and staff, as
well as parents and alumni.
I quote Psalm 90 again: “Give success to the work of our hands!”
God has heard and granted our prayers in the past, and I am
confident that He will do so again.
Enjoy and support our fall teams, musicians, cheerleaders, student
trainers and support staff.

Fund The Future
The Fund for STVM provides
vital support for the school’s
annual operating budget.
STVM strives to keep tuition
low while offering financial aid
and scholarships to students
in need.
Like all independent schools
and colleges, our tuition never
fully covers our operating
expenses. In fact, the cost to
educate each child exceeds the cost of tuition by 15%. The Fund
for STVM helps us keep tuition as low as possible so that a STVM
education remains affordable for the families we serve, while
sustaining our tradition of academic excellence.
Your gift is vitally important because it allows STVM to:
• Continue and improve our outstanding academic offerings.
• Provide financial support to students in need.
• Continue to attract and to retain the best faculty and staff.
• Secure our St. Mary, St. Vincent, and St. Vincent-St. Mary traditions

CAreer connections
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School is pleased to host the Annual
Career Connections Career Fair on Wednesday, November 7, 2012
The Career Connections Career Fair is a chance for our Junior
and Senior students to learn more about their fields of interest
from alumni and friends of the school. Mentors will be providing
our students with firsthand knowledge and insight into the
careers they hope to pursue.

Coach Boarman Gives Thanks
Once again, this year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank
the St. Vincent-St. Mary community for the wonderful support that
I have received. I am humbled by your dedication and display of
loyalty and I am so pleased to have come full circle in my life by
returning to my roots— St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
The “fire” of the Fighting Irish is very much alive, and I am so
grateful to be a part of that excitement. The feeling of tradition and
pride is palpable, and it is truly a special time in my life to be a
member of the Fighting Irish.
St. Vincent-St. Mary is a unique institution, so integral to the history
of Northeastern Ohio. No high school in the area can match it in any
regard. It is a school which has produced winners, not only on the
athletic field and in academics, but also in life.
As we continue our journey together, we take pride in honoring our
heritage and traditions. Once again this year, following each football
game, we will walk together as a team to the shrine of the Blessed
Mother, to pray together and give thanks. In doing so, we will be
reminded of our faith, and how it helps us come together as a school
family. I hope that everyone in the St. Vincent-St. Mary community
will join us in prayer after each and every home game. Working
together, we will achieve success.

Ten Years Ago…
In 2002, STVM made the Division 4 State Playoffs for the second
year in a row but lost to VASJ 0-14. The Fighting Irish Football Team
finished with a record of 6-5 including wins over Akron Garfield,
Firestone, East and Walsh Jesuit. The seniors on that team were:
Cyril Alvarado, Jay Brophy, Gino D’Andrea, Thomas Hill, Mike Hurley,
Ryan Laatsch, Charles Mack, Tom McDonald, Colin Meeker, Mike
Murphy, Chris Neag, Terrance Portis, Demone Pryor, J.J. Rimedio,
Brent Scarbrough, Vince Tersigni, Zach Snyder, and Matt York.
Twenty Years Ago…
The 1992 STVM Team won three games and lost 6 against a tough
schedule. The wins were against Firestone, Youngstown Rayen and
Cuyahoga Falls. The senior members were Anthony Bishop, Steve
Boyd, Mike Close, Adrian Dudley, Kevin Frattura, Bill Myher, Branko
Nuss, Matt Petit, Cameron Pooler, Joe Shay, Ray Sprungle, Mike
Staudt, Scott Stewart, and Josh Zwisler.
Thirty Years Ago…
The 1982 Irish won the State “AA” Championship for the second year
in a row. The Irish defeated Ironton 21-14 as Frank Stams scored all
three touchdowns. Ironton had defeated the Irish 7-6 for the 1979
State Championship. STVM won 11 games and lost only to Cleveland
St. Joseph and tied Lake Catholic. The STVM co-captains were Pat
Bangston, Jim Conlin, Ken Kline and Ed Taggart. The other senior
players were Ken Calderone, Jim Morgan, Tim Bigach, Jeffrey Snell,
Jeff Pumphrey, Dan Amato, Joe Iemma, Doug Davidson, Michael
McFrye, Brian Moran, Dan Petit, Mike Peterson, Ned Endress, Dino
Lombardi, and Dave Presper.
Forty Years Ago…
The 1972 football season was the first year for new STVM High School
and the Irish won the first State “AA” Championship by defeating
Uniontown Lake 24-6 and Columbus Watterson 28-7. The STVM
Fighting Irish posted a record of 10 wins and 2 defeats. The losses

The 1962 St. Mary High School Crusaders turned in a fine 7-1 record
for their last season of the Blue and Gold. It was another record
breaking season for the 1962 Crusader football team since they
followed the 1961 Crusader State Champ Team. This 1962 team was
led by Coach Carl Klotz and Coach Ray Kapper, featuring players
such as Jim Morrison, Ed Becker, Tom Pappas, Bill Finn, Bob Pappas,
Mike Morris, Tom Harvey, Larry Taylor, Chuck Steidl, Jim Castner,
Nicholas Verderico, Steve Mergenov, Rudy Piekarski, Louis Vassalotti
and more!

Sixty Years Ago…
The 1952 St. Mary High School Crusader Football Team reached playoffs
during the season but posted a disappointing overall record.
Head Coach Harry Kidder is assisted by Line Coach Murphy and
Assistant Ned Endress. The team had a disappointing season due to
bad luck and the players being plagued by serious injuries according
to the 1953 Crusader yearbook.
The 1952 St. Vincent High School Football Team claimed the District
Championship with a brilliant 7-2-1 record. Wins over Falls, CCC,
West, Ravenna, Kenmore and Buchtel sparked the campaign. Seniors
included Bob Brizes, Chuck Pfeil, Dave McKoski, John Costello, Larry
Foore, Carl Martin, Joe Elio, Jerry Myers, Adeb Haddad, Carl Gessler,
and Ron D’Allessio.
Seventy Years Ago…
After a banner year in 1941, the 1942 St. Vincent High School Football
Team had an average year posting a 2-3-2 record. Team members
included John Dente, Joe Bennett, Jim Dies, Al Gauthier, Ed Kelly,
Tony Mattucci, Vincent Blanco, Bob Kline, Dave Kline, B. Cox,
B. Johnson, and Harry Tersigni.
Eighty Years Ago…
The 1932 Irish Football Team of St. Vincent High School posted the
credible but unusual record of 3-1-4. Strong defensively they held
their opponents to only an average of four points a game. The squad
included: Glenn Garrett, Ed Walter, J. Joyce, L. Elio, J. Lemmon, Bud
Clark, R. Witt, R. Brown, Bob Dutt, Joe Gorbach, Ed Doyle, B. Quigley,
J. Suscinski, John Zeno, G. Seigferth, and S. Krakowski.
Ninety Years Ago…
In 1922 football season and for their second year of football, the new
St. Vincent High School mustered only one win against seven losses.
19-13 win over East was one of the bright spots for Captain Ralph
Williams, Don Corbin, Dean Corbin, Joe Kelly, Cletus Fitzharris, Mike
Flynn, Charlie Fagan and the rest of the Irish Squad.

HEAD COACH DAN BOARMAN
2012 Varsity Football Schedule
Coach Dan Boarman, V70 enters
his 6th year as Head Coach for the
Fighting Irish Football Team.
Boarman has earned many
athletic and coaching honors. He
was chosen for the all-city, alldistrict
and all-northeast Ohio
football teams in 1969. He attended
Indiana University in Bloomington,
Indiana, on a football scholarship.
While he served as defensive coordinator at St. Vincent-St.
Mary High School, the school won three state championships.
He also coached two state championship baseball teams at
STVM. In 1977, he was inducted into the St. Vincent-St. Mary
High School Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2001, he was inducted into
the Greater Akron Baseball Hall of Fame.
Coach Boarman stated, “Last season we posted a 10-3 Record
and made it to the regional finals. It is our goal this season to
#1 – to play as a “family,” #2 – to lead each other to become
better players, and #3 — ultimately win a state championship.”
Coach Boarman and his wife Sandra, V70, reside in Akron.
They have four children: Daniel, Anne Marie, Marisa and
Anthony and eight grandchildren.

Brian Knight, Athletic Trainer
Brian Knight is the Athletic Trainer for
the Fighting Irish sports teams. Brian
has 16 years experience and is a 1991
graduate from Stow High School and
received his degree from Kent State
University in 1996 in Athletic Training
and Physical Education.
Brian is in his 13th year as Head
Athletic Trainer for STVM. He is currently
employed by Summa Center for Sports Health and is an outside
curriculum instructor for Kent State and The University of Akron.
Brian comments, “We had a great year in the Athletic Training
Program. We graduated one senior and have 5 students
coming back for this school year along with Kent State and
The University of Akron students. In addition, Dr. Magoline and
Dr. Kerr are back as team physicians for the upcoming fall sports
season.”
Brian and his wife Lisa reside in Stow and they have two
children, T.J. and Drew.
Dr. Julie Mehigan Kerr
Dr. Julie Mehigan Kerr is a native
of Akron and is a graduate of
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School’s
Class of 1986. She deepened her
“Fighting Irish” roots at the University
of Notre Dame and received her M. D.
degree at the University of Cincinnati
College of Medicine. She completed
residency training in Internal Medicine
at University Hospitals of Cleveland and is currently an attending
physician in the Sports Medicine department at Akron Children’s
Hospital. In addition to her clinic duties, Dr. Kerr serves as the
Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Director. She is the Medical
Director of The University of Akron Student Health Services and
is a Team Physician for The University’s Department of Athletics.
Dr. Kerr resides in Bath with her husband and son.
Anthony Gary
Once again, for the 2012-2013 school year,
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School will offer
sports-specific strength and conditioning
training for all athletes. The training will be
provided by 5th year Head Wrestling Coach
Anthony Gary, who is a personal trainer
certified by the National Strength and
Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the
American Council on Exercise (ACE).
There is no charge to STVM athletes for these services. Gary will
work with the students on a program to enhance their performance
and prevent injury during the regular season, as well as pre- and
post-season. Although athletes are not required to participate,
they’ll have an opportunity to meet as a team with Gary once
or twice a week to learn body weight and stretching exercises,
including variations on martial arts and yoga techniques.
“Proper strength and conditioning training is important for
preventing injury and improving speed, agility and power,” said
Coach Gary. “I’m happy to be able to offer this, not only to my
wrestlers, but to all athletes at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.”
Dr. Michael Magoline
Dr. Michael R. Magoline is in his 11th year as
team physician at STVM.
Dr. Magoline is an Orthopaedic surgeon who
completed his undergraduate studies at
Washington & Lee University and medical
school at Case Western Reserve University.
He then performed a surgical internship at
Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio,
Texas and served as a flight surgeon for the 159th Combat aviation
group in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He subsequently completed his
Orthopaedic surgery residency at Summa Health Systems in Akron,
Ohio followed by a one-year fellowship in Arthroscopic Surgery and
Sports Medicine at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in Richmond,
Virginia.
Dr. Magoline specializes in Arthroscopic Surgery of the shoulder
and knee as well as general Orthopaedic surgery.
Dr. Magoline is married and has two children.

HEAD COACH DAN lancianese
Coach Dan Lancianese has 31 years
coaching experience and enters his
19 th season as the Head Coach of the
Irish Cross Country teams. Overall dual
meet record (boys 170-49, girls 158-66).
Currently the girls are on a 44 meet
winning streak and the boys are on a 30
meet winning streak.
Coach Lancianese commented, “For
the 2012 teams, our goal is to continue
the legacy created by all past harriers of the Fighting Irish Cross
Country program. With steadfast commitment in their God-given
talents, the boys and girls of this years’ team have given the coaches
a tremendous summer of dedication in extreme heat and miles. My
prayer is that this foundation, which was lead by the small core of
seniors as well as the returning alumni runners, will transcend us into
another visit to Columbus in November for both teams. None of
this success has been possible without the directions set for by
Chris Miloscia and the help of my other assistants: Bob Shell, Mike
Iacofano, and Rick Engelhart. We are also honored to have former
state placer Colleen Conrad VM08 as an addition to my staff.”
Coach Lancianese lives in Akron with his wife Rita VM81, STVM
Art Teacher and children: Angela VM99, Anthony VM00 and Dominic
future class of VM20.

Coach Phil Alvord begins his 1st
season as Head Coach for the Irish
Boys Soccer team. Coach Alvord is
a 2003 graduate of STVM and has
been the Assistant Boys Soccer
Coach for the past 4 years.
Coach Alvord has extensive
soccer experience not only playing
but in coaching, teaching and
running goal keeper sessions. Coach
Alvord earned 4 letters for each of the years he played for the
Quakers Soccer Team while attending Wilmington College in
Wilmington, Ohio. Coach Alvord graduated with a degree in
Education as well as a degree in English.
Coach Alvord comments, “Last year we finished as the
district runner-up. With the great core of dedicated seniors
that we have, our goal is to win the State Title this year.”
Coach Alvord lives in Akron and is the son of Barry and
Michelle and the brother of Beth VM01, Mary Grace VM04,

HEAD COACH tom kilbourne
Coach Tom Kilbourne will begin
his 3rd year as Head Coach of the
Fighting Irish Boys Golf team.
Coach Kilbourne graduated from
Cuyahoga Falls High School and
then graduated from the Goodyear
Apprentice Program and from the
Goodyear Engineering School. He
worked at Chrysler Corporation for
30 years and retired in 2006.
Coach Kilbourne has played in the Greater Cleveland Amateur
Tour and many local amateur events over the years. Coach’s
best handicap was a 2.
Coach Kilbourne comments, “We have qualified for districts
and have placed eighth for the last 3 years. This year we have
a young team without a lot of varsity experience, and we will
work toward improving upon that record.”
Coach Kilbourne is the grandfather of Tyler Rice VM11 and
Mariah Rice VM15.

HEAD COACH JOHN NOETHEN
Coach John Noethen enters his 1st
season as the Head Coach of the Lady
Irish Golf team and his 6th season in
the coaching arena.
Coach Noethen is a 1971 graduate of
St. Vincent High School and lettered
as a member of the St. Vincent
Tennis Team during his high school
years. Coach Noethen attended The
University of Akron and graduated in
1975 with a degree in Accounting.
Coach Noethen’s experience includes the love of the game as a
life-long golfer, and he has played in a number of amateur events
in the Akron area over the years. Coach often reflects on the
progress the Lady Irish Golf Team has made over the past 6 years.
Coach Noethen has been on the coaching staff since the beginning
of the STVM Girls Golf program.
Coach Noethen comments, “2011 was a great year for the Lady
Irish Golf Team where they attained: League Champions, OHSAA
Sectional Champions, and 6th Place at OHSAA Districts. The 2012
Team starts the season with the most experience of any STVM golf
team in the history of the program. I am confident that we will be
able to keep our 2011 momentum going.”
Coach Noethen is assisted by Alex Balough VM11 who begins her
1st year as Assistant Coach. Coach Balough graduated from STVM
in 2011 and currently attends The University of Akron.
Coach Noethen resides in Akron with his wife, Meg and their two
daughters: Michelle VM13 and Emma VM15.

Laury has had a variety of playing
and coaching experiences during
the past 16 years. Coach Laury’s
experiences include playing at
Norton High School, The University
of Akron, and the Slovak Catholic
Sokols as well as coaching at
Norton, Wadsworth and Black River High Schools and the
Slovak Catholic Sokols.
Coach Laury comments, “A new beginning aimed at building
a highly successful volleyball program at St. Vincent-St. Mary
through sound fundamentals and hard work. My Vision and
Mission is to achieve growth and success by instilling leadership,
dedication, discipline and teamwork so these young women
will stand proud and confident on and off the court.”
Coach Laury and her husband, Frank live in Norton with their
four children: Frankie VM09, Drew VM12, Chelsea VM13, and
Logan.

This marks Mr. Campbell’s 15th
year at the helm of the music
department at STVM. Anyone who
has followed the Irish over the past
years has to be impressed with
the growth in numbers and talent
– all attributed to Mr. Campbell’s
hard work and dedication to the
program. In addition to Marching
Band, he directs the Symphonic
Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band and Pit Orchestra as well as teaches
Music Appreciation. The Fighting Irish Marching Band was
proud to march and perform in the New York City St. Patrick’s
Day Parade and looks forward to returning to Disney World in
Orlando, Florida this coming school year. The Fighting Irish
Marching Band has performed in Chicago, Cincinnati, New York
City, and at Disney World, Orlando, Florida.
Mr. Campbell also teaches at Immaculate Heart of Mary,
St. Hilary, St. Francis de Sales, St. Vincent, St. Matthew and
Holy Family Elementary Schools.
Mr. Campbell and his wife, Tracy and their two daughters,
Brenna and Kylie live in Wadsworth.

Coach Angela Sutter begins
her 1st year as Head Coach for
the Fighting Irish Cheerleaders. In
addition, Co-Coach responsibilities
will be held by Joe Neal.
Coach Sutter has an extensive
background in the cheerleading
arena and is a 2004 graduate of
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
Not only did Coach cheer at STVM
but also cheered in college at the University of Dayton.
Coach Sutter graduated in 2008 with a degree in Early
Childhood Education. Coach Sutter is currently working in the
Copley Fairlawn City School District.
Coach Sutter comments, “This year we have a great group
of girls with a lot of talent. We are going to work hard to learn
more as individual athletes and as a team. We look forward to
what this season will bring!”

Irish Dance troupe. Coach Morton
works at St. Vincent–St. Mary High
School as an Intervention Specialist
assisting students with disabilities. Her
background in dance culminated with
a Degree in Dance Education K-12 from
Kent State University.
Assisting Coach Morton is Jan Giles (featured on the left). Coach Giles is in her 3rd
year assisting with Irish Dance. She works at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in the
Advancement Office as the Manager of Advancement Services. Her background in
dance stems from her involvement as a student of dance during her school years and
as a high school cheerleader.
Coach Giles comments, “After an amazing year where our Irish Dancers performed
at a variety of venues including the NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade, we are anxious to
see where this year will take us.”
Coach Morton is married to Walter and they have four children and two
grandchildren.
Coach Giles is married to Jeff and they have two sons, Graham VM10 and Jack
VM14.
