They did, however, win their 9th Tri-County Soccer League title in the past 11 seasons. Thanks to Coach Haddox for his years of mentoring our soccer players, not only on the field, but in many of their other endeavors as well. The new mentor of the girls soccer program is Santosh Kanakkanatt who will be ably assisted by current assistant coach Kathleen Vass. Congratulations to the girls, and “Thank You and Best of Luck” to Coach Haddox. Girls Tennis Veteran Coach Jim Hollenak gave Captains Awards to Alex Ballard and Kelsey Lecerf, Most Improved to Natalie Winer, Rookie of the Year to Taylor Wedlake, the Coach’s Award to Caroline Bennett, and the MVP award was shared by Alex Ballard and Kelsey Lecerf who also had the most wins. Highlights of the season were wins over Hoban and the entire team advancing to district play. With the return of Tabitha Simpson (knee injury) and the showing of the underclassmen led by newcomer Taylor Wedlake, the girls tennis future is very bright. Kristen Berzonsky, Leah Cistone, Elizabeth Conlon, Elizabeth Hoffman, Kelly Schaffer, and Rachel Wojtowicz. Team Spirit Award went to Kristen Berzonsky; Best Offense went to Middle Hitter Jessica Bridenthal; Team M.V.P. went to All-Around player Leah Cistone. Twenty-Five girls in the Volleyball program were honor roll students. Junior, Jessica Bridenthal was named to the First Team All- District for District III and the Beacon Journal. Jessica and Coach Mary Howard were honored with Touchdown Club Awards. Wrestling New head coach Joe Retherford has worked the small number of wrestlers into a competitive group. Team leaders entering the February 2008 sectional tournament were veteran wrestlers Darren Tate, Zak Vargo, and Nate Nasrallah. Promising youngsters have Brian Cresswell and Carlos Lugo slightly ahead of the others as we enter into the tournament phase of our winter sports. Good luck wrestlers! Boys Golf New coach John Grimm was pleasantly surprised as sophomore Jack Uecker played through the District and Regional and qualified for the State Tournament. The team will lose seniors David Podrasky and team captain Randy Bye who provided leadership as well as low scores but with Jack, Chris Domer and James Lloyd returning along with some promising JV’s, next year’s team looks very promising. Congratulations Jack on a great sophomore season! Girls Golf New to the scene here at St. VincentSt. Mary was our first girls golf team. Coach Mike Bittner and John Noethan worked hard to form the first ever team which finished with some surprising victories. The young ladies are looking to improve and add to their numbers as we hope our new program grows both in interest and stature in girls golf competition. Volleyball The 2007 Volleyball team went above and beyond expectations. The team finished with a 22-4 season record with wins over Hoban, West Holmes, and Tallmadge. The season ended in a well played match at the District Final at Canton South. The team was led by 6 Senior Captains... STVM Football Team Captains accept Sportsmanship Award STVM Receives Sportsmanship Award St. Vincent-St. Mary has received the Sportsmanship Award from the Portage and Summit County Football Official Association.We were selected out of 44 schools to receive this award. Criteria for the award included: Team Attitude, Coaches' Attitudes, Crowd Attitude, Team's Attitude towards Opponents, Treatment of Officials, and Accommodations for Officials. 41
