National issues raised in relation to mammography led to a dramatic increase in demand for services towards
the end of the year. Demand for ultrasound also rose with the ongoing development of the Triple Assessment
Clinic (TAC) and symptomatic breast services.
Chemotherapy activity rose by a further 18% in 2007 demonstrating an ongoing growth in demand for
oncology services. This places particular pressures on staffing levels and the physical infrastructure/facilities.
Service Enhancements
In addition to the above, a number of service developments were delivered for the benefit of patients:
• VHI agreed to direct payment for Echo tests, significantly reducing the financial burden on patients
requiring this service.
• MDA, night sedation and pre-medication stock management systems on the wards were changed,
improving access without compromising security.
• An improved satellite pharmacy was introduced on Redwood ward, comprising a drugs cupboard and
fridge. Out-of-hours back up via an agreement with a local pharmacy was also put in place.
• A laser machine was acquired in physiotherapy for the faster resolution of inflammatory response and
reduction of pain.
• Upgrade of CT Scanner (to 16 slice), which improves the standard of imaging in Radiotherapy and
also provides a back-up facility for Diagnostic Imaging.
• Revised Consent form introduced for Radiotherapy patient.
• Further development work carried out on a new Radiation treatment – IMRT.
• Successful negotiations with HSE for treatment of public patients requiring Radiotherapy treatment
(first patients to be treated in Quarter 1, 2008).
• Additional Social Work resources made permanent.
• Development of a Patient Information Pack.
• A second Pulmonary Function Lab was opened almost doubling capacity.
• A new full-time Dietician Manager was appointed.
