Elective Services
There are daily elective orthopaedic clinics in The Bone and Joint unit. These include subspecialty clinics in
Upper Limb and Joint Replacement. There are further specialty elective clinics in Cappagh National
Orthopaedic Hospital, which includes Joint Replacement and The Bone Tumour Clinics. The Bone Tumour
Service provides a national service in this area.
The majority of the patients seen in the elective clinics at both St. Vincent’s University Hospital and Cappagh
Hospital have the surgery carried out in Cappagh Hospital.

Nurse specialist Area
They are based in the plaster area of the Bone and Joint Unit. Throughout the year the staff provide support
to the fracture and orthopaedic clinics. This caters for all aspects of orthopaedic nursing including: wound
management, plaster services and fracture splinting. A total of 3159 patient episodes were recorded.
In addition to being a point of contact for patients under the departments care on an ongoing basis, the
Plaster Service also provide educational support for other areas that use or require this type of service.
