St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group Limited - Annual Review 2007 Department - Ophthalmology This is now the 10th year of participating in the European Audit network for cataract surgery, European Cataract Outcome Study. This audit provides excellent benchmarking for the procedure. As last year, the consultant staff would like to express their appreciation of the heroic nursing efforts provided by Sr. Sandra Murphy, Sr. Esther McCarthy and their nursing team. We understand the stress of their jobs in today’s world. Their patient care is superb. We would also like to thank Ms. Jane Caulfield for her dedicated secretarial role in a world where administration is becoming progressively more time consuming. Finally, our lecturer Dr Jan Shotveld has returned to a consultant’s post in Holland and is replaced by Dr. Ruaidhri Kirwan Ph.D. Dr. Aideen Hogan is in her second year developing the services as a medical research ophthalmologist and Mr. Princeton Lee is our current surgical registrar. The many years experience of Dr. Magdi Nasralla as medical registrar is also much appreciated. In a changing world of care delivery, education and research we hope to continue the development of the department. Finally, Mr. William Power was elected Chairman of the Medical Board of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital and Mr. Peter Barry delivered the Choyce Medal Lecture to the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Harrogate, U.K. St. Jame’s Ward Inpatient Admissions 2007 (including transfers) Ophthalmology Other Specialities Total ELECTIVE 339 71 410 VIA EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT 0 175 175 OTHER URGENT 3 8 11 TRANSFERS (from other wards) 2 32 34 TRANSFERS (from other hospitals) 0 4 4 TOTAL 344 286 634 Return to Contents 230
