St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group Limited - Annual Review 2007 Department - Medicine for the Elderly Hospital developments in the future will help provide a more seamless service with the Emergency Department and the community in order to reduce or prevent hospital admission with this service. The Royal Hospital Donnybrook The Royal Hospital Donnybrook makes a very important contribution to the rehabilitation of our elderly patients. There are 40 rehabilitation beds in this unit and 12 are now dedicated to stroke rehabilitation. The Day Hospital at the Royal in Donnybrook continues to provide outstanding care and outpatient rehabilitation services to those with multidisciplinary needs. The long established links with long-term care facilities continue to evolve through the dedicated work of Dr Mary Deane, Medical Director. Staffing Close liaison is maintained with St. Columcille’s Hospital, Department of Medicine for the Elderly under the direction of Dr. Morgan Crowe and Dr. Rachael Doyle with St Michael’s Hospital under the direction of Dr J.J. Barry. Additional consultant posts are being looked for, to improve the service delivery in St. Vincent’s University Hospital. Welcome to Ms Hilda Markey CNM II on Our Lady’s Ward and Ms Therese Carey, CNM II in Carew Day Hospital who were appointed during the year. We look forward to their contribution and work in the ongoing development of these services. Achievements / Conferences Attended Congratulations to Ms. Imelda Noone who has been accredited as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Stroke Care and has also has had the position of Clinical Nurse Specialist in Stroke sanctioned. Dr. Kevin McCarroll won 2nd place for his poster presentation at the 55th Annual Irish Gerontological Society meeting in Croke Park – “Acute Hospital Readmission Rates for Elderly following Discharge from Hospital”. The multidisciplinary team members attended The 2nd UK Stroke Forum in Harrogate, Annual Care of the Elderly Study Day, The Irish Gerontological Society Conference, Irish Heart Foundation Stroke Study Day and the Annual British Geriatric Society Meeting. The Fifth Annual Care of the Elderly Study Day took place in March 2007 in the Education & Research Centre, St. Vincent’s University Hospital. This year it focused on more general topics and was attended by 90 people. This is now be a regular study day in the teaching calendar. Publications / Abstracts Presented at Irish Gerontological Society Meeting 2007 and published in Irish Journal of Medical Science 1. Acute hospital readmission rates for elderly following discharge to long-term care facilities. 2. Mortality of patients discharged from hospital to long-term care. 3. Role of telecare & assistive technology in facilitating home living. 4. An audit on the prevalence of incontinence in the acute hospital setting. 5. Atrial fibrillation as a major risk factor for stroke in patients over 80 years of age. 6. Stroke Activity in the acute hospital setting. 7.
