This year was a busy year for the Department of Medicine in St Vincents University Hospital. The numbers
of patients seen and treated continues to increase. The move to the new hospital building has been
completed. The move to subspecialty admission has begun with the centralization of respiratory patients on
St John’s and St Paul’s wards and gastroenterology medical and surgical patients on St Lukes 1 and 2. The
formation of the Dublin Academic Health Centre has led to significant collaboration between the Mater
Misericordiae University Hospital and Vincent’s University Hospital.
New Developments
Plans for the development of a dedicated high intensity medical observation unit have been agreed. It is
hoped that work on this unit will start in the first half of 2008. This will provide significant improvements in
the delivery of care to critically ill medical patients within the hospital.
Retirements
Professor T J McKenna and Dr Michael Moriarty retired in 2007 after many years of service to SVUH.
Appointments
Professor Michael Keane joined the consultant staff as Professor of Medicine and Consulant Respiratory
physician.
Dr Ronan Canavan joined the consultant staff in Endocrinology.
Dr Seery was appointed as a permanent College Lecturer/Consultant Physician.
Research and Teaching
The research output of many departments is of the highest quality with many publications in international
peer reviewed journals and numerous international distinctions.
