Library & Information Services Department
Staff
The staff complement in SVUH remained at 3 full time posts and 1 part time. Mary Flynn resigned her post
of Evening Library Assistant in May and was replaced by Julia Christopher in September to provide late
opening hours for the academic year 2007/8.
Breda Bennett continued to provide a one-person-operated professional library and information service in St
Michael’s Hospital.
Service Developments/Activities
SVUH Library recorded 19,757 visits in 2007. The introduction of swipe-card access to the corridors of the
ERC in September has reduced the number of visitors slightly but has provided secure access to the
premises for authorised users.
Update
SVHG Libraries launched Update in March. This occasional newsletter aims to provide news and information
about the library and information services to the Group and was published 3 times in its first year. Responses
have been very favourable and a full review including customer satisfaction surveys will be carried out in
2008.
Heritage Library Management System
The online public access catalogue was made available on the Intranet in July and formally launched by Mr
Murtagh in St Michael's Hospital. Group staff are now able to search the joint SVHG catalogue, reserve items,
extend their loans, gain electronic access to databases and journals and contact the library at their
convenience.
St Michael's Hospital
Usage of the library was constant during the year. There are 456 library members. The Librarian participated
in Orientation meetings for NCHDs and nursing students, the IHSAB Accreditation scheme and the hospital
newsletter. She participated in Group Library & Information Services Committee and the Department Heads
meetings.
2 printers were upgraded. All PCs were upgraded and there are 6 available for public use. A binding machine
and a scanner were acquired for the library.
St Vincent’s Private Hospital
Mr Peter Sheehan continued to represent the Hospital on the Group Library & Information Services
Committee.
