Future Plans<br />
The Department will continue to develop the services it<br />
provides to the staff of the hospital.It is hoped that next year<br />
will see further development of the service.<br />
Priorities for 2004 are<br />
•The extension of the service to <strong>St</strong>.Vincent’s Private Hospital<br />
<strong>and</strong> development of closer links with the <strong>St</strong>. Michael’s<br />
Hospital Occupational Health Department.<br />
•The full implementation <strong>and</strong> evaluation of the ‘Working<br />
Backs’programme for all staff.<br />
•Continued focus on stress management activities.<br />
•Contribution to the implementation of the HSEA ‘Dignity at<br />
work’policy to be published in January 2004.To this end,<br />
Nuala Gannon successfully completed the first year of a<br />
Diploma in Mediation studies in UCD.<br />
•An evaluation of the Occupational Health Department<br />
services by examining,in particular:<br />
•The impact of ‘Be Sharp, Be Safe’ workshops on<br />
needlestick injury rates.<br />
•The effectiveness of ‘Managing work-related stress’<br />
seminars.<br />
•The effectiveness of the staff support service.<br />
•Varicella immune status of staff in high-risk areas.<br />
•The extent of latex glove use in the catering <strong>and</strong><br />
cleaning departments of the hospital.<br />
•The numbers of non-st<strong>and</strong>ard pre-employment<br />
medicals performed.<br />
•The Hepatitis B status of those carrying out exposure<br />
prone procedures in the hospital.<br />
<strong>St</strong>aff<br />
During the year, new staff members continued their<br />
development within <strong>St</strong>.Vincent’s University Hospital.<br />
We were very glad to welcome back Gerri Geoghegan,Art<br />
Therapist following her career break.<br />
We welcomed Karen Clifford as Senior Occupational Therapist<br />
(O.T) in pain management <strong>and</strong> adult psychiatr y, S<strong>and</strong>ra Byrne,<br />
Basic grade O.T <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth Hughes, O.T Assistant.<br />
Unfortunately, when vacancies arose later in the year, staffing<br />
shortages ensued.<br />
This had a negative impact on the numbers of patients seen by<br />
the department in some clinical areas.<br />
We look forward to welcoming new staff members in 2004 as<br />
we wo rk together to continue to provide professional Occupational<br />
T h e ra py services with a focus on quality improve m e n t .<br />
Service Developments/Activities<br />
The department completed a revision of Occupational Therapy<br />
policies,procedures <strong>and</strong> guidelines.<br />
H<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Plastics<br />
•H<strong>and</strong> Therapy protocols were completed,in collaboration<br />
with Physiotherapy <strong>and</strong> consultants.<br />
•A basic grade rotation was offered together with the<br />
Rheumatology service.<br />
<strong>Medicine</strong> for the Elderly<br />
•O.T links with the T.I.A clinic established.<br />
•Carmel Collins,Senior O.T joined the Driving Special<br />
Interest Group for O.Ts. The group are devising a driving<br />
assessment screen for use by Occupational Therapists.<br />
<strong>Pain</strong> Management<br />
•Work continued on the Occupational Therapy portion of<br />
the multidisciplinary pain management programme manual.<br />
Assessment tools for the O.T programme were revised also.<br />
Adult Psychiatry<br />
•Odhrán Allen,Senior O.T commenced part-time hours <strong>and</strong><br />
Karen Clifford,Senior O.T joined the service.<br />
Old Age Psychiatry<br />
•The multidisciplinary Nursing Home Education Programme<br />
was developed.<br />
•There was a significant increase in activity in this service<br />
area. See departmental <strong>St</strong>atistics.<br />
Significant Achievements<br />
Documentation Audit<br />
The audit took place in July 2003 <strong>and</strong> allowed us to review our<br />
compliance with documentation st<strong>and</strong>ards within our<br />
department. The compliance levels had improved <strong>and</strong> will be<br />
monitored in line with best-practice risk management principles.<br />

Rheumatology<br />
•The multidisciplinary Joint Protection Education group for<br />
patients with a new diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis<br />
commenced.<br />
•Splinting protocols were developed by O.T, Physiotherapy<br />
<strong>and</strong> Nursing.<br />
Accreditation<br />
Both Carol O’Donnell <strong>and</strong> Valerie Kelley were directly involved<br />
with care service teams for the hospital accreditation<br />
programme. Carol O’Donnell is co-chair of the Bone <strong>and</strong> Joint,<br />
Rehabilitation <strong>and</strong> <strong>Pain</strong> Management team.<br />
<strong>St</strong>roke & Neurology<br />
•This service moved to temporary accommodation during<br />
the year.We look forward to moving to a more long-term<br />
location as soon as possible.<br />
•There was a significant increase in activity in this service<br />
area. See departmental <strong>St</strong>atistics.<br />
The teams journey began in earnest with all staff members kept<br />
up to date as the programme progressed.<br />
Continuing Professional Development Group (C.P.D).<br />
The work of the C.P.D group continued with the development<br />
of a CPD resource file <strong>and</strong> individual CPD portfolios for all<br />
staff.The group planned a poster presentation for the 2004
