Classicopia Continues its
Chamber Music House Concert Series
PERFORMANCES IN HENDERSONVILLE AND BLACK MOUNTAIN
Classicopia, Asheville’s newest
chamber music organization
dedicated to chamber music
in intimate spaces, will present
a House Concert called
“Tremendous Trios” featuring the
passionate Mendelssohn Piano Trio
in D Minor and the autumnal Brahms
Piano Trio in A Minor along with
shorter works by Astor Piazzolla.
Artistic Director and pianist
Daniel Weiser will be joined by Kara
Poorbaugh, Principal Violist of the
Asheville Symphony and member of
the Opal String Quartet, who will do
double duty on both violin and viola
for the concert, and Franklin Keel, Associate
Principal Cellist of the Asheville
Symphony and also a member of
the Opal String Quartet.
Weiser co-founded Classicopia
(www.classicopia.org) in New
Hampshire in 2001 with a mission of
making chamber music a regular and
active part of the community, and he
has expanded these programs into
Western North Carolina after moving
to Asheville in 2009.
Each concert uses the finest
musicians in the region and beyond
and Weiser also talks before each piece
to set the composer into socio-historical
context and to break down any
artificial barriers between performers
and the audience.
Classicopia is now starting a
monthly House Concert series and
will also perform in other venues
in the region, including Retirement
Homes such as Deerfield, bars such
as White Horse in Black Mountain,
and Churches such as St. James in
Hendersonville.
On February 6 a House Concert
will be held at the home of Daniel
Weiser, 75 Edwin Place in the Grove
Park area in Asheville. There will be
room for about 25-30 people so seating
will be limited. The cost is $40
per person, which includes some light
refreshments and drinks.
Classicopia will be performing
the same program on Friday, January
28 at 7 p.m. at the White Horse in
Black Mountain, and again on Sunday,
January 30 at 4 p.m. at St. James
Episcopal Church in Hendersonville.
Admission for the White Horse
program is $12. This is a wonderfully
relaxed and informal music venue
with cabaret-style seating and drinks
available. Tickets will be available
at the door, and can be reserved by
calling (828) 669-0816 or by visiting
www.whitehorseblackmountain.com.
The White Horse is located at 105C
Montreat Road in Black Mountain.
The program at St. James is their
21st annual Candlemas benefit concert.
Proceeds from this year’s concert
have been designated for local hunger
and poverty relief and will be divided
equally between Interfaith Assistance
Ministry and The Storehouse. Tickets
are $15 and are available at the St.
James receptionist desk, the Henderson
County Visitor Information
Center, Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat
Rock, and Diamond Rush Jewelry in
Laurel Park Village. Any remaining
tickets will be available at the door.
The price of admission includes
a catered candlelight reception in
the parish hall following the concert.
Classicopia will also be performing
a preview of this program and an
BY DANIEL WEISER
interview with Dick Kowal on WCQS
radio on Friday, January 28 at 2 p.m.
Classicopia is planning many
more House Concerts, including a
fabulous “Love Triangle” program
featuring piano quartets by Robert
Schumann and Johannes Brahms plus
a Piano Trio by Clara Schumann.
One program will take place on
Saturday, March 5 at 3 p.m. and other
dates are being explored. Classicopia is
also seeking any people in the region
who happen to have a grand piano in
their home and room for 30 or so people
to watch a concert who might be
interested in hosting a future chamber
music House Concert. Classicopia believes
House Concerts are the perfect
way to see and hear chamber music
and would love to have several possible
venues available during the year.
Classicopia also presents educational
outreach programs in schools,
including an original show called
“Beethoven Lives... in North Carolina”
that is designed for grades K-6 and
introduces them to chamber music
and the life of Beethoven in a fun and
interactive manner. Dr. Weiser also
presents solo “Salons” on the lives of
various composers that are a perfect
way for adults to continue their
musical education in a very intimate
home environment. Classicopia
believes strongly in nurturing the next
generation of musicians and will seek
to find performance opportunities for
talented young people on all instruments
in the region.
