Alternative Artist Austin Lucas
T
he nomenclature “alternative country”
gets thrown around like so
much confetti but for the Bloomington,
Indiana based singersongwriter
Austin Lucas the term
actually has some validity.
Born and raised in Bloomington Lucas
considers himself a true Hoosier, proud
of the independent
streak noted for those
who hail from the
area. As a child Lucas
was taught how to
sing by his musician
father Robert before
he could even speak.
At home or in the
car, the family would
harmonize and make
music, each year
traveling during the
summer months to
folk, bluegrass, and
old-time music festivals where his father
would perform.
As Lucas became old enough to attend
school, he began attending the Indiana University
Children’s Choir, honing his natural
gift for singing while steadily increasing his
appreciation for many forms of music. Yet
in spite of working under the program for
six years, performing in a trio of operas and
dozens of classical choral pieces, it wasn’t
until much later in life that he fully learned
to love or appreciate his studies; yet again
that independence bordering on stubbornness
was at work.
By age twelve, absorbed by the louder
and more aggressive sounds of punk music,
Lucas quit the choir in search of a sound
that reflected his rebellious nature. It was
in the punk and hardcore scene where he
found himself, and where he has for nearly
two decades remained.
Starting out in crust and grind bands
such as Rune and Twenty-third Chapter,
Lucas somehow migrated to the Czech
Republic — not exactly your typical punk
destination — touring solo and playing
guitar in the band Guided Cradle. But he
never left his country and bluegrass roots
behind, and it is there and to the states that
Singer-songwriter Austin Lucas.
he eventually returned.
After playing in several local bands
Lucas landed a recording contract with the
little known Magic Bullet label. The eight
songs that comprised Putting the Hammer
Down harkened to
a rich heritage and
tradition of great
American country
and folk music past.
That sense of
tradition was balanced
with a strong
do it yourself ethic
and an equally strong
dose of punk ethic.
Lucas has said that he
was hoping to “make
music that crosses
both generational and
genre divides” and in that he most certainly
succeeded. Lucas followed that effort with
the equally potent Common Cold, released
last year on Sabotage Records.
Since then Lucas has continued to
hone his craft. His latest tour, in support
of his upcoming album Somebody Loves
You, will cross the United States in a
whirlwind five weeks.
On March 4 he’ll bring his sound to
Static Age Records in downtown Asheville.
With the heart of a lion and the insight of
a road warrior that has toured not only this
nation countless times, but several other
continents and countries, Lucas delivers his
songs with momentum and vigor, making
sure every word - and melody - counts and
isn’t lost on the listener. We in Asheville are
fortunate to have the opportunity to hear
him up close and personal.
