September 2008 - August 2009
Calgary, Alberta
Regional strength, local highlights and highest per capita
income in Canada puts us on top again!
Provincial strength
Alberta’s economy continues to be among the
nation’s best performers in 2008. With strong growth
in the service sector, economic growth is forecast to
expand 3.3 percent this year.
Robust wholesale and retail trade sector
The soaring employment growth of 2007 means
income gains for 2008, providing consumers with
plenty of money to spend, and expected retail sales
growth to come in at 6.3 percent this year. Total
output in the wholesale and retail trade sector is
projected to expand 5.8 percent for 2008.
Commercial and residential development
Residential housing starts are achieving more
sustainable levels but are still high by historical
standards. The non-residential construction
sector remains dynamic this year with major projects
like the $850 million Encana office tower complex, the
$460 million Foothills Medical Centre, the $280 million
Trident Tower, and the $300 million Jamieson Place
office tower, alongside the $1.3 billion South Health
Campus and the $1 billion Light Avenue Place. Total
output for the construction sector is forecast to rise
by a further 3.1 percent in 2008.
Forecasted top in Canada
After a very solid performance in 2007, economic
growth in Calgary is projected to accelerate to
3.9 percent in 2008. Our five year outlook projects
average annual real GDP growth to reach 4 percent,
top among all census metropolitan areas in Canada.
Calgary’s personal income per capita outpaces the
provincial average by over 15 percent, and the
national average by almost 50 percent.
ANNUAL REVENUE CONTRACTS
Advertisers signing an annual revenue contract agree to
use the revenue amount signed for within the 12 month
period. Advertising revenue from all Calgary Herald
products and services contributes towards the revenue
contract. Annual contracts are automatically renewed at
the volume rate earned over the previous 12 month period.
Annual revenue contracts will be reviewed after the first six
months to determine if the contract rate requires adjustment
for the balance of the term.
ROP DISPLAY ADVERTISING
Display advertising is ordered by the number of columns
(width) multiplied by the number of agate lines (depth).
Our newspaper page measures 10 columns wide by
310 agate lines deep (written as a 10 x 310). The cost of
a display ad is calculated by the number of columns
multiplied by agate lines, multiplied by the appropriate
line rate.
Display advertising is posted on our online
SHOPPING website to provide additional reach
to advertisers (some exclusions apply).
for billing and verification purposes. Advertising
customers may register to receive electronic tearsheets
for ordering hard copy tearsheets are the same as ad
booking deadlines.
CONDITIONS
• Flyers are accepted for inclusion in the Calgary Herald
and distribution through Flyer Force when copy is not
false or misleading, is in good taste and meets standards
of acceptance that apply for all advertising in the
Calgary Herald.
• Delivery of pre‐printed material to the newspaper and Flyer
Force is at the expense of the advertiser. Note that flyers
destined for distribution in both the Calgary Herald and Flyer
Force are to be shipped to the respective locations. Single
shipments that have to be split will not be accepted.
• Shipments of inserts may be boxed or bulk‐stacked on
standard pallets not exceeding five feet in height. Each
should be plainly labeled with the number of inserts
contained within. Inserts should be brick‐stacked
(interlocking). The Calgary Herald will confirm the
number of skids or boxes of flyers delivered but is unable
to verify the total flyer quantity received. Discrepancies in
flyer quantities will be the responsibility of the client.
• 1% over the distribution quantity is required as a
cushion for mechanical inserting for both Calgary Herald
and Flyer Force distribution quantities. This cushion is
already included in the quantities provided by your
sales representative.
• Based on a combination of Calgary Herald page count,
the number, size and stock of booked inserts and insert
zoning requirements, there is a physical and mechanical
limit to the number of inserts we are able to distribute
on any given day. Scheduling is based on a first-come,
first-served basis and is subject to availability.
• Flyers which do not meet minimum specifications may still
be delivered by pre-insertion into another flyer. Add a $11
per thousand pre-insertion surcharge to the applicable
distribution rate. Maximum quantity for pre-insertion is 25,000.
This service must be pre-arranged due to time constraints.
