Die enkele boodskap wat vir dekades reeds deur
veekundiges by herhaling aan die veebedryf oorgedra
is en later amper 'n cliché geword het, is: “Jy kan nie
passasiers op jou plaas bekostig nie.” Vir baie lank was
dié boodskap hoofsaaklik gemik op reproduksie.
Hierdie vermaning is vandag meer waar as ooit. Die totale
ekonomie wêreldwyd dwing die boer om ag te slaan daarop. Dit
is tewens 'n realiteit dat die meeste van die veeboere wat nie
hierop ag geslaan het nie, reeds uitgeskakel is. Die aantal leë
opstalle op ons platteland spreek vanself – nie te lank gelede
nie, het 'n boer met sy gesin daar gewoon en 'n bestaan gemaak.
Ja, daar is inderdaad verskeie redes hiervoor, soos veiligheid,
grondherverdeling en die onsekerhede wat daarmee gepaard
gaan. Maar die ekonomie is beslis een van die belangrikste faktore.
Dus – die waarskuwing bly baie geldig.
Produksieprestasie is uiters belangrik
Daar is 'n baie belangrike aspek wat langs reproduksie staan,
naamlik produksie. 'n Boer kan net nie meer 'n koei of ooi
bekostig wat nie kalf of lam nie. Nog minder
'n kalf of lam wat ondergemiddeld presteer
wat ekonomies belangrike eienskappe
betref. Vandag besef die meeste veeboere
dat hulle ten minste hulle diere moet
weeg, maar ook dat daar baie meer daaragter
sit as om bloot net jou diere te weeg.
Dit gaan nie meer net oor die ooglopende
uitskotdiere nie. Dit gaan daaroor om die
nie-so-voor-die-hand-liggende substandaard
diere te identifiseer. En ten einde die
meerderwaardige diere te identifiseer, het die
veeboer inligting nodig – gemete inligting
wat verwerk is in vergelykbare gegewens en
rangordes.
Geloofwaardigheid en standaarde
Maar selfs dit is nie genoeg nie. Omdat die kosteknyptang tans
so drasties is, moet jy jou risiko’s tot 'n minimum beperk en, soos
reeds genoem, moet jy meet en aanteken. Maar verder moet jy
weet dat dit wat jy in verwerkte vorm terug ontvang, geloofwaardig
is en aan sekere standaarde voldoen.
Dit is waarom die akkreditasie wat SA Stamboek pas van
ICAR (die International Committee for Animal Recording) vir alle
aspekte van sy dienste ontvang het, so belangrik is – nie net vir
SA Stamboek self in die wete dat wat hier gedoen word aan internasionale
standaarde voldoen nie, maar ook vir die gebruiker
van SA Stamboek se dienste is dit gerusstellend om te weet dat
sy data, die verwerking daarvan en verslagdoening wat hy terugkry
vir besluitneming, voldoen aan bepaalde internasionale standaarde.
Sy diensverskaffer is dus nie tegelyk speler en skeidsregter
nie. SB

For decades animal scientists have been conveying one
message to the livestock industry repeatedly – so much
so, that it later almost became a cliché: “You cannot
afford to have passengers on your farm.” For a long time
this message was aimed mostly at reproduction.
Today this warning rings more true than ever before. The
total global economy forces the farmer to take note of it. In fact,
most of the livestock farmers who did not heed this message
have already left the picture. The numerous abandoned
farmsteads in our rural areas speak for themselves – not too
long ago farmers and their families resided and made a living
there.
Yes, there are indeed many reasons for this abandonment,
including safety, land redistribution and its accompanying
uncertainties. But the economy is definitely one of the most
important factors. Thus – the warning remains as valid now
as then.
Production performance is critical
There is a very important aspect that stands
alongside reproduction, namely production.
A farmer simply cannot afford to keep a cow
or ewe that doesn’t calve or lamb. Nor can
he keep a calf or lamb that performs below
average in respect of economically important
traits. Today most livestock farmers realise
that they should at least weigh their animals,
but also that there is much more to it than
simply weighing them.
It isn’t about the obvious cull animals anymore,
but rather about identifying the less
obvious substandard animals. And in order
to identify the superior animals, the livestock
farmer requires information – measured information that has
been processed to deliver comparable statistics and rankings.
Credibility and standards
But even this is not enough. Because of the drastic nature of the
current cost squeeze, you have to limit your risks to a minimum
and, as already stated, you have to weigh and record. But you
also have to know that the information that is returned to you in
processed form, is credible and meets certain standards.
This is why the accreditation that SA Stud Book recently received
from ICAR (the International Committee for Animal Recording)
for all aspects of its service delivery, is so important
– not only for SA Stud Book itself, knowing that what we do here
meets international standards, but also for the farmer who uses
SA Stud Book’s services, who can be assured that his data, the
processing thereof and the report that he receives for decisiontaking,
meet specific international standards. In other words, his
service supplier is not player and referee at the same time. SB

SA Stud Book received international accolades recently
when the International Committee for Animal Recording
(ICAR) awarded the organisation their certificate of
quality for all aspects of animal recording and genetic
evaluation for all the species and production systems
that it applied for.
This makes SA Stud Book the only organisation in the Southern
Hemisphere to receive ICAR accreditation in all aspects and species.
In addition, one of SA Stud Book’s senior officials, Dr Japie van der
Westhuizen, has been elected to the ICAR Council.
These are high accolades indeed, and the South African stud breeding
industry should be immensely proud of these achievements.
Achievement brings responsibility
There is another side to this, however, and it may be prudent to
point this out here: with this honour comes a tremendous responsibility.
To become number one is difficult, but to remain number
one over an extended period is even more difficult.
The field of genetics is currently in an incredibly fast developing
phase in its history, with new technologies making it both much easier
and also much, much more complicated. It would not be overstating
the fact if one uses the word “revolutionary” in this context. Best linear
unbiased prediction (BLUP) technology caused a revolution in breeding
when it hit the industry some 30 years ago. But with genomics, you
have seen nothing yet!
Genomics is in the process of rewriting the genetics script totally.
Ten years from now this industry will look radically different from
what we know now. This boat is sailing very fast. But ... consider GPS
technology. Wonderful, if the maps are updated regularly. A GPS with
outdated maps, however, is next to useless.
Accuracy is king
Similarly, genomics will only be effective if the basics are sound.
Genomic technology is the pinnacle, the top of the pyramid. It is
built on layers of technology that have to be sound. And the foundation
remains the farmer and the accurate recording of economically
important traits on the farm.
A shortened generation interval has the potential to increase
genetic progress tremendously, but it has equal potential to ruin a
breeding programme if selection is based on flawed criteria. And the
basis of sound criteria is accurate recording.
So, although it should give the South African stud breeding industry
peace of mind (and hopefully a generous dollop of pride), that the
systems that are in place to keep us on the forefront of the genomic
revolution are of the very best in the world, the message should not
get lost that it all depends on the basic integrity of the data accumulated
on the farm.
And thus on the integrity of the South African stud breeder.

International accreditation for SA Stud Book
SA Stud Book was awarded the International Committee for
Animal Recording (ICAR) certificate of quality at the ICAR annual
general meeting, which was held on Wednesday, 29 May 2013, in
Denmark. The certificate of quality was awarded for all aspects
of animal recording and genetic evaluation for all species and
production systems applied for. This makes SA Stud Book the
only organisation in the Southern Hemisphere to obtain ICAR
accreditation for all departments and species.
Accreditation by an independent international panel carries
dual importance – firstly that the participant, SA Stud Book,
receives confirmation that their services adhere to international
standards, and secondly that SA Stud Book’s client, the stud
breeder, can be rest-assured that the services rendered to him
by SA Stud Book are of the highest standards, determined by an
independent team of experts.
SA Stud Book was also honoured by the election of Dr Japie
van der Westhuizen, departmental head of SA Stud Book’s production
recording department, to the ICAR board. This is a massive
honour as ICAR consists of 103 member organisations from
57 countries worldwide.
Dr Pierre van Rooyen, general manager of SA Stud Book, said:
“SA Stud Book is extremely proud to render services to our members
that adhere to international standards. The future is indeed
bright for SA Stud Book and its members.”
Suksesvolle kursus in praktiese vleisbeesteling
SA Stamboek het gedurende Mei ’n nuwe kursus bekendgestel wat daarop fokus om
teelwaardes aan telers te verduidelik en die waarde van die toepassing daarvan in die
praktyk te beklemtoon.
Die SA Stamboek teelwaardekursus vir praktiese vleisbeesteling het ten doel om
telers die nodige kennis te gee om hierdie waardevolle inligting op hul eie stoet toe
te pas. Dit is in lyn met SA Stamboek se nuut aangenome etos, “Wins deur genetika”.
Die kursushandleiding is opnuut saamgestel deur die produksie-aantekeningsdienstespan
van SA Stamboek en die kursus is aangebied deur dr Helena Theron en dr
Japie van der Westhuizen, asook Siebert Vermeulen en Bernard Burger.
Die kursus het bestaan uit teorie, asook ’n praktiese kuddebesoek wat net buite
Bloemfontein by Deon Greyling se Deoza Bonsmarastoet plaasgevind het. Soortgelyke
kursusse word landwyd gereël en telers wat in hierdie tipe kursus belangstel,
word aangemoedig om met SA Stamboek in verbinding te tree.

Jersey-kampioene in noorde
Jersey SA het onlangs sy noordelike kampioenskappe vir
2013 aangebied. Die beoordelaars by die geleentheid was
Cobus
Behrens, beoordelaar, en Pieter van Deventer, assistent. Die
uitslae was soos volg:
• Rosafield Carrier Maxi: Grootkampioen-koei, junior
kampioen-koei en junior kampioen uier
• Rosafield Badger Nina: Reserwe grootkampioen, senior
kampioen-koei en senior kampioen uier
• Rosafield Jace Lobellia: Kampioen oukoei
• Cocky Action’s Kristen: Reserwe senior kampioen uier
• Molls-Hoop Sultan Dorrine: Kampioen jongkoei en
kampioen jongkoei uier
• Rosafield Jordan Lobellia 2: Reserwe jongkoei-kampioen
en reserwe kampioen jongkoei uier
• Omikron SHF Roos: Kampioenvers
• Hernanja Legal Snow: Reserwe kampioenvers
Bonsmara SA Wêreldkongres 2013
Bonsmara SA is in 2012 aangewys as die gasheerland van
die jaarlikse Bonsmara Wêreldkongres. Om hierdie geleentheid
te kon huisves, was ‘n groot voorreg en eer. Sowat 35
passievolle Bonsmara-telers van so ver as Australië, Brasilië,
Argentinië, Uruguay en Namibië het Suid-Afrika in Meimaand
besoek vir ‘n onvergeetlike ervaring.
Tyd is maksimaal benut met ‘n inligtingsbelaaide
program wat deur Charl Uys, president van die Bonsmara
Wêreldfederasie, bestuur is. Kuddebesoeke by verskeie
telers in die Oos-Vrystaat, ‘n fase D-afsluiting, ‘n senior
keurderskursus en ‘n besoek aan SA Stamboek was van die
hoogtepunte. Die Bonsmara Wêreldfederasie se algemene
jaarvergadering is ook tydens hierdie geleentheid aangebied.
Baie dankie aan almal wat ‘n bydrae gelewer het tot die
sukses van hierdie onvergeetlike geleentheid. Bonsmara
SA spreek ook 'n spesiale woord van dank aan die borge:
Vleissentraal, Oranje Drukkery en SA Stamboek.

WHAT'S UP?
Nguni-opleiding in Nieu-Bethesda
’n Belangrike diensfunksie van die Nguni Beestelersgenootskap is om
Nguni-telers op te lei en in te lig met die regte kennis om ’n suksesvolle
stoetboer te wees. Die opleiding is gefokus op die geskiedenis
en agtergrond van die ras en die genootskap, rasegte kenmerke
(beskrywing), rasstandaarde, genetiese afwykings, tegniese punte en
administrasie. Dit sluit ook praktiese opleiding met diere en ’n praktiese
evaluasie in.
’n Suksesvolle opleidingsdag is op 25 April in Nieu-Bethesda gehou.
Die verrigtinge is bygewoon deur 23 projekdeelnemers en telers.
Telers het van so ver as Mosselbaai, Jansenville en Port Elizabeth
gery om die dag by te woon. Die Nieu-Bethesda Rooivleisprodusenteen
Kleinboereprojek se beeste is gebruik vir die praktiese opleiding.

Busy time for Senepol Society
The first half of the year, which is usually
the busiest for the Senepol Cattle
Breeders’ Society, has ended and
it was no exception to the rule. The
annual general meeting, which was
held in April, was attended well and
councillors whose term had expired,
were re-elected for their respective
positions.
The Senepol Cattle Breeders’ Society
is the only breed society which was
officially represented at the Lobatse
International Beef Fest on 4 May. The
Senepol breed was very popular, and
the vice-president of Botswana and
his entourage also visited their stand
to find out more about the breed and
talked to four breeders who worked at
the stand.
Nampo was once again very big
and the interest in the Senepol breed
was outstanding. The new Senepol
journal was launched at Nampo and
it was received very well. The journal
was also posted to many interested
parties.

Vleissentraal vereer uitblinkers
Die direksie, bestuur en bemarkers van Vleissentraal het onlangs ’n werksessie by
Hartbeespoort gehad, waar bemarkers en afslaers met spesiale toekennings vereer
is vir uitsonderlike prestasies wat tydens die 2012-finansiële jaar behaal is.
