Livewell Smoking Cessation Program<br />

• Livewell Smoking Cessation Program: An<br />

ongoing education program with smoking<br />

cessation counselors using the American <strong>Cancer</strong><br />

Society’s Fresh Start program - a unique approach<br />

to quit smoking. This program is offered to hospital<br />

employees, community members, and patients of<br />

Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation who report an<br />

incidence of smoking. This program is advertised<br />

monthly in regional newspapers in the <strong>Community</strong><br />

Health Classes & Events Calendar. It is also<br />

emailed to over 1500 community members.<br />

All classes held in the Annex Classroom.<br />

• January 15, 17, 22 and 24 at 5:30 p.m.<br />

• March 5, 7, 12 and 14 at 2 p.m.<br />

• July 9, 11, 16 and 18 at 8 a.m.<br />

<strong>Cancer</strong> Awareness Programs<br />

• September 13 –Ware County High School <strong>Cancer</strong> Awareness Game: The Ware County High<br />

School softball team partnered with <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> Health System to help raise awareness of cancer.<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> Health System allowed fans to have free admission to the game and distributed 100<br />

free water bottles. Robert Trimm, CAO, delivered the first pitch.<br />

• October 22 – Racing for Pinks: Hosted by the Waycross Service League to help raise awareness<br />

of breast cancer. <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> Health System provided financial and logistical support.<br />

• November 9 – Ware County and Pierce County High School Football Games: <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong><br />

Health System distributed promotional items at the entrance gates, and announcements noting the<br />

transition to a tobacco-free campus and the importance of our partnership were made throughout<br />

the games. A raffle was held for a free bicycle at each game.<br />

• November 15 - Great Smoke Out BBQ Kickoff: The celebration of our tobacco-free campus<br />

included food, games, and prizes. Special recognition was given to the respiratory department for<br />

staff members certified as Smoking Cessation trainers, and recognition of employees that have<br />

graduated from the classes.<br />

Screening Programs<br />

• September 12 – Rich Products Health Fair: Coupons were<br />

presented by <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> Health System for a free PSA screening to<br />

all males 40 years and older. The coupon expired October 12.<br />

9 coupons distributed, 3 coupons used, all results were negative<br />

• October 1- Women’s Health Blitz: Coupons for 20 free pap smears<br />

and breast exams were offered on a first come, first served basis to all<br />

eligible candidates. Pap Smears and breast exams were performed by<br />

Nancy Miller, M.D. and Machelle Borders, M.D. by appointment at the<br />

Obstetrics & Gynecology office. The laboratory provided hemoccult<br />

cards for colon cancer screening. Patients were required to return the<br />

card for testing using a provided stamped and addressed envelope.<br />

48 cards distributed, 6 cards returned, all results were negative<br />

Ongoing Plans for Prevention and Screening<br />

Men’s and Women’s Health Blitzes – August 2013<br />

• Obesity and health education for women and men combined with Evening With a Doc.<br />

• A Men’s Health Blitz will be developed to cover PSA screenings and prostate exams. Many requests<br />

for prostate screenings are received.<br />

These efforts are steered by the <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> at <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> Health System in Waycross.<br />
