A new vision for health care
delivery in Cannon Falls
More than 50 years ago, the community of Cannon Falls knew that no city could thrive
without the basics: good education, affordable housing, vibrant businesses and quality
health care. Through generous donations and strong community support, the existing
health care facility was built. The hospital doors opened in 1958 to a bright future.
And for the last 54 years, the current facility has served the community well.
Today, there’s more focus than ever on preventive, primary care. In addition to treating
people when they get sick, doctors are helping to sustain good health. In addition
to coming to aid in a health emergency, health care experts are more focused on
preventing those emergencies and health problems. After an illness or injury, efforts are
centered on restoring health. Happily, many are living longer, healthier lives.
The picture of health care in Cannon Falls and beyond has changed dramatically in the
last 50 years, and it requires a different kind of medical center.

A new chapter in Cannon Falls’ history began
with Mayo Clinic affiliation
Seeing the dramatic shifts in the health care
landscape, Cannon Falls hospital leadership
determined that it was necessary to form a
partnership with an organization that could
provide long-term stability. Following a thorough
examination of strategic options, Cannon Falls
Community Hospital and Cannon Falls Hospital
District chose affiliation with Mayo Clinic in 2006.
The benefits to the Cannon Falls community have
been numerous, including:
1. Ensuring the future of health care delivery in
the community

by taking advantage of the expertise and
knowledge of Mayo Clinic
3. Making more services and medical specialties
available locally
4. Attracting quality providers and staff

Although the dedicated team of providers and
staff in Cannon Falls has strived to provide
Mayo Clinic care to patients locally for six years,
the aging facility limited some aspects of care.

Due to local community shifts, national changes in
health care, as well as a renewed commitment to
standardize care across all of Mayo Clinic Health
System, it has been determined that the aging,
54-year-old facility can no longer adequately meet
patients’ needs, nor can it sustain the full benefits
of the Mayo Clinic model of care.
For the community and for patients,
it’s time to upgrade the medical
facility in Cannon Falls.

How a new medical center will benefit Cannon Falls
The benefits of building a new medical facility in
Cannon Falls go beyond the continued presence of
dependable, high-quality health care. Benefits of
constructing a new facility include:
• Increased access to emergency care in timesensitive,
life-threatening situations
• Attraction of new patients from Cannon Falls and
neighboring communities
• Stronger viability of Cannon Falls as an attractive
community to live and raise a family
• Employment opportunities at the expanded
medical center, including attracting high-quality
staff who would like to work in a new facility
• Overall positive impact on economic growth in

collaboratively with other Mayo Clinic Health
System locations nearby, such as Lake City and

The vision is to provide high-quality primary care
close to home, including adding more specialty
services, with access to expert specialty care when
needed.
The story started in 1958, when community leaders
had the foresight to open the hospital. It continued
in 2006 with Mayo Clinic affiliation, bringing
expertise and knowledge in ways not possible
before.
Now is the time to begin the next
chapter of Cannon Falls’ story.

A new medical center for your community
With patient needs in mind, a new medical center is
being planned. Features of the new medical center
will include:
• Room to serve patients. When finished, the new
medical center will be 80,000 to 90,000 square
feet in a single facility. It will replace the current
hospital, clinic, modular building and adjacent
homes in use today, which are a combined 35,000
square feet.
• A broad range of clinical services. Outpatient
services will include primary care, orthopedics,
cardiology, urology, podiatry, otolaryngology
(ENT) and general surgery.
• Additional surgical space and services. A new
operating room will be triple the size of the
current space, along with an adjacent endoscopy
suite for minimally invasive procedures. Surgical
service lines will include orthopedics, podiatry,
urology, otolaryngology (ENT), ophthalmology,
endoscopy and general surgery.
• Expanded emergency services. The Emergency
Department will continue serving patients in a
larger space designed to accommodate projected
need well into the future. It will feature five
state-of-the-art patient treatment rooms, and will
include a comfortable waiting area for patients
and families.
• New space and equipment to aid recovery.
Rehabilitation Services will have the room to
add necessary rehabilitation equipment for
patients needing physical and occupational
therapy or cardiac rehabilitation following
an illness or surgery, including patients in
Mayo Transitional Care.
• Land for expansion. The medical center will
be built on a 51-acre site to accommodate future
growth and new services.
• Convenient location. The site, which is on the
south side of Cannon Falls off Highway 52, is
adjacent to city services and the new highway
interchange, offering easy access, high visibility,
attractive views and convenient parking.
• Patient privacy. The new hospital will have 15
private rooms for inpatient care with ample space
for families and visitors. Registration and public
areas will be designed to accommodate patient
privacy and comfort.
• The latest medical technology. The new clinic
will be built to accommodate state-of-the-art
medical equipment needed to provide safe and
efficient diagnostic and treatment services. This
equipment will support both inpatient and
outpatient care, and will help providers deliver
new models of health care, such as long-distance
in-room consultation with experts at Mayo Clinic
and remote monitoring of acutely ill patients.
• Comfort and support behind the scenes. The
building will feature the latest in data, electrical,
ventilation, heating and cooling systems to
support the medical technology critical to
providing health care of the highest quality.
• Attractive and serene spaces. The entire facility
is designed to create a healing and healthy
environment. The building’s interior and exterior
spaces will be comfortable, bright, warm and
welcoming.

Looking to the future is inspiring, but sometimes
looking to the past can be a reminder of the progress
that’s been made. Here are the ways Mayo Clinic
Health System has benefited the community in the

Health System in Cannon Falls achieved and
maintained Joint Commission Accreditation
beginning in 2010. This designation means the
care in Cannon Falls meets national standards
for health care quality and patient safety.
• Access to experts at Mayo Clinic. Patients
who have imaging tests such as a CT and
MRI scan have results read and interpreted
by Mayo Clinic radiologists. This means a
faster and more accurate diagnosis for you.
• Mayo Clinic is here to stay. Affiliation
with Mayo Clinic means increased financial
stability, meaning a commitment to serving
the Cannon Falls community long-term.
• Health records are safe, secure and accessible.
An electronic medical record system was
implemented in 2011, linking Cannon Falls
patients directly to Mayo Clinic. This system
improves patient safety by alerting providers to
potentially dangerous medication interactions, as
well as allowing Mayo Clinic specialists to review
records for more efficient team care for you.
• Patients receive the best Mayo Clinic has to
offer. Increased standardization across Mayo
Clinic means that Cannon Falls has implemented
many Mayo Clinic standards of care. This means
patients get Mayo Clinic care right here at home.
• Patients can recuperate closer to home.
Cannon Falls participates in the Mayo
Transitional Care program, which provides
rehabilitation and hospital services for patients
recovering from illness or injury. This means that
when patients are discharged from Saint Marys
Hospital in Rochester or another higher level of
care hospital but are not quite ready for home,
they can recuperate right here in your community.
• Confidence in continual improvement.

Cannon Falls deserves state-of-the-art
medicine, enough space to meet patient care

The current facility simply isn’t adequate.
Mayo Clinic is prepared to invest in the
future of health care delivery in Cannon
Falls. A new state-of-the-art medical center
will cost $30 million. Mayo Clinic will
invest $20 million in the new facility with
the understanding that the community will
support the remaining cost of the project.
