Collection: The Rhenish Open-Air Museum focuses
on documenting country life as it used to be.
About 60 buildings from all over the Rhineland -
residential buildings, farmyards, windmills, workshops,
but also village community buildings such
as a school and bakery, a dance hall and a chapel
– have been reerected in the museum. Most of
the buildings were reconstructed in their 'original'
condition after being moved. The oldest buildings
date from the 16th century. On the other hand, furnishings
show the economic and living conditions
of the 19th and early 20th century. Meanwhile
more recent periods, e.g. the 1930's, have been

Category: The Suermondt Ludwig Museum,
Aachen, a foundation of 1877 in a representive
palais with historic and new extensions, is one
of the important museums in the west of
Germany. Its collections reach from contemporary
to antique arts, with an internationally
known collection of German and Dutch sculptures
and paintings of late mediaeval times.
Beyond the museum shows alternating expositions
in the big exhibition hall, the copper-plate
cabinet and the studio, e.g. regularly photography
shows take place.
Collection: The museum is renowned especially
for its mediaeval wooden sculptures. Painting
Masterpieces from Germany, the Netherlands
and Flanders dating from the 15th to the 17th
century give an insight into the different iconographical
approaches of these periods, especially
of the 17th century.
Important works illustrate the different historical
developments and cover the period up to the
19th and 20th century. Here artists such as
Januarius Zick, Oswald Achenbach, Alexej
Jawlensky, Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth
should be mentioned.

Derlon Hotel was commenced, Maastricht’s city
archaeologist undertook an extensive survey of
the site. The Roman finds are so important that it

was decided to conserve them and exhibit them
to interested parties. The following can be seen
in the cellar of Derlon Hotel; part of the 2nd and
3rd century square, a 3rd century well, part of a
pre- Roman cobblestone road and sections of a
wall and a gate dating from the 4th century.
Roman finds are exhibited in glass cabinets, and
panels provide extra information on the results
of the archaeological survey of the site.

Description: The pink sandstone castle (12C)
was the residence of the Juiliers dynasty until
the 15C. From the donjon, converted into a
museum devoted to the fortresses and castles of
the Eifel, there is a fine view over the Rur Valley.
The church (12C) boasts a Romanesque chancel
decorated with frescoes.
This museum offers an introduction into castle
history of the Eifel with reconstructions of
various castle complexes, documentation of the
scopes of duties of the medieval castle.
Moreover it gives an insight into the life of the
Eifel nobility.

Description: The Eifel plateau is known for its
crater lakes, spectacular landscapes and also
for its red wine.
Bad Münstereifel lies at the entrance to the Eifel
plateau, the largest and most complex of the
Rhineland schist massifs. The average altitude
of this undulating plateau, severed by deep valleys,
is over 600m. It consists of four zones: the
Upper Eifel (Hocheifel), which features a volcanic
landscape, the rugged, isolated Schnee-
Eifel, the North Eifel, covered in moors and
forests and the narrow valleys of the South Eifel.
The Ahr vineyards are famous for their dark-red
wines.

Description: The town hall was built in the 14th
century on the site of Charlemagne's palace, of
which only the Granus tower remains. The facade
of the tower, overlooking the market place, is
decorated with statues of Emperors and kings
crowned in Aachen. Inside the tower, see the
White Room where the Peace Treaty of 1748
was signed, and the wood-panelled Council
Chamber. The outstanding Coronation Chamber
is decorated with 19C frescoes of Charlemagne,
and also houses copies of the crown jewels.

Location: Aachen
Description: Aachen’s cathedral was the coronation
centre for the Kings of Germania from the
10th to the 16th century. Charlemagne began its
construction a little before 800, modelling it on
Byzantine churches. From the south side outside
the building there is a good view of most of the
Carolingian church with its many-sided cupola
dating from the 17th century. There are three
chapels: the St.-Matthew (1414), St.-Anne (pre-
1449), both Gothic, and the Hungarian chapel
(1756-1767). On the northern side, several chapels
can be seen, including the St.-Hubert chapel
(1455-1474) with its flamboyant portal, and
above all the chancel with its 19th century statues
between the tall windows. The Carolingian
entrance hall is reached through bronze-leafed
doors embellished with lions' heads. The interior
is formed by an octagon surrounded by a twostorey
ambulatory. The openings on the upper
level have grilles dating from the Carolingian
period. From the centre of the cathedral, richly
decorated with mosaics, hangs a magnificent
copper chandelier donated by Frederick
Barbarossa (1165). Among the many noteworthy
works of art, the ambo of Henry II, a small pulpit
in gilded copper decorated with precious stones
is well worth admiring. The Carolingian high
altar is adorned with a Pala d'oro, a sumptuous
gold altar front decorated with scenes from the
Passion and Christ in majesty (c 1020). Behind
the altar is the Shrine of Charlemagne, marvelllously
hand-worked in gilded and embossed silver,
containing the Emperor's bones. On the
upper level the Emperor's throne can be seen
and is still perfectly intact.

Description: The Suermondt Ludwig Museum,
Aachen, a foundation of 1877 in a representive
palais with historic and new extensions, is one
of the important museums in the west of
Germany. Its collections reach from contemporary
to antique arts, with an internationally
known collection of German and Netherlandish
sculptures and paintings of late mediaeval
times. Beyond the museum shows alternating
expositions in the big exhibition hall, the copperplate
cabinet and the studio, e.g. regularly photography
shows take place.

Description: This art and archaeology museum
is the foremost museum of old masters and contemporary
art in the province of Limburg. The
museum houses two collections. The contemporary
art collection contains works by an international
group of artists. In addition to contemporary
paintings, the collection also includes projections
and gallery-sized installations. The collection
of Old Masters emphasises 16th and 17th
century Flemish painting, including major works
by Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens. In addition,

Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek
Location: Maastricht
Description: The Basilica of Notre-Dame is the
oldest monument in the town: the building was
already there in the year 1000. The high front
extension in front of it dates from the same era.
The nave and the apse are from the 12C. The
interior is partly topped by a gallery thus forming
two rows of superposed columns. Its capitals
are richly decorated. The church has two
Romanesque crypts. The treasure house has
precious reliquaries, ivories and liturgical ornaments.

St. Servaasbasiliek
Location: Maastricht
Description: This impressive monument, one of
the oldest in the Netherlands has been much
modified but was begun around 1000 and extended
in the 12C. The front extension (west) is typical
of the Romanesque Maas style (12C). Topped
by two towers, it is decorated with Lombard
bands between which twin bays are inscribed.
Its carillon is excellent. The capitals of the front
addition are noteworthy for their rich ornamentation.
The crypt has many tombs of famous
people, including that of St Servais, the sarcophaguses
of Charles of Lorraine, the Bishops
Monulphe and Gondulphe, founders of the early
church (6C), and two other Bishops: Candide
and Valentin. The neighbouring crypt, with
square pillars, belonged to the early church. The
treasure house of the collegiate chapel (12C)
mainly consists of gold and silversmith's work,
ivories, priestly ornaments, paintings, retables
and statues. Especially noteworthy is the bust of
St Servais (end of the 10C), a symbolic silver key
which was said to have been put there by St
Peter and a large number of reliquaries from the
end of the 12C, the most remarkable is the reliquary
of St Servais.

Description: Still preserved to the south of the
town, these walls dominated by towers, shaded
by trees and bordered by gardens are one of the
charms of Maastricht. On the two sections still
there the path round the battlements has pretty
views over the lakes from the top of the first
tower, over the Bejaardencentrum Molenhof a
building on the north side of the ramparts and
over an old watermill near to the Jeker, then
casrrying on to the circular bastion of the Five
Heads, over a vast stretch of water.

Description: The highest point in the Netherlands
is also the meeting point of the borders of three
countries: Germany, Belgium and the

region, Aix-la-Chapelle, the German forests and
further away Maastricht. This "giant" attracts

almost believe you were in the far off Alps. At
last, this land is not so low.

which the coal was extracted and the safety
systems.
