Merry Wives 

DESPITE three false starts, the preview performance 

of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of 

the comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor was scheduled 

to go ahead last night (Monday), reports Simon 

Woodings. 

The play first fell victim to technical glitches last 

Thursday but theatre bosses hoped to re-stage the 

show the next evening, but this too had to be cancelled, 

as was the weekend performance of the play on 

Saturday. 

“We’ve tried very hard to contact people to let them 

know latest developments, but we felt the set installation 

wasn’t quite right and we couldn’t afford technical 

problems to endanger public safety. We know 

people have been disappointed and so have we, but 

where possible we’ve offered refunds or booked 

people into other performances of the show,” a 

spokesperson for the Royal Shakespeare Company 

said. 

Merry Wives director Phillip Breen, aged 32, who 

lives in Luddington, said: “We did arrive here ‘ready 

to go’ but we have had some teething problems which 

have been a result of a new building [the RST] and a 

combination of other things.

UNRESTRAINED fury has greeted the decision by Communities 

Secretary Eric Pickles to give the go-ahead to plans to build 800 

homes on land close to Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Shottery. 

Among the most angry are local Tories—because the decision was made 

by a Conservative minister in the coalition government. Stratford MP 

Nadhim Zahawi has even suggested that Mr Pickles is defying the will of 

Parliament by approving the hugely controversial scheme.

for the town, which is being 

let down by the utter shambles 

the Conservatives have 

created around the council’s 

core strategy.” 

She added: “This Shottery 

site—in open countryside 

and close to Anne Hathaway’s 

Cottage—should 

never have been put in the 

local plan in the first place.” 

Stratford Town Council 

added its voice to those 

who’re disappointed by the 

decision. In a statement, it 

said: “The town council has 

consistently opposed this 

development on the grounds 

that it will have a detrimental 

impact on the character 

and setting of the town 

and on Anne Hathaway’s 

Cottage, a Grade I listed 

building.”

‘Electricity-saving’ device 

that doesn’t save anything 

AS winter approaches and consumers 

look to save money on their 

energy bills, Warwickshire Trading 

Standards Service has found one 

device that will definitely not save 

you money. 

One Warwickshire consumer 

raised the issue with trading standards 

after her elderly mother had 

received a phone call from 

someone falsely claiming to represent 

her energy supplier. The caller 

offered to send her a device that 

they claimed would ‘save her 

money’. The call came from outside 

the UK. 

An ‘electricity saving box’ then 

arrived in the post and after another 

phone call the elderly lady was 

scammed in to paying £99 for the 

device. 

These devices, which consumers 

are encouraged to plug in to ‘save’ 

them electricity, have already come 

to the attention of Trading Standards 

Services in other parts of the 

UK. 

They appear to come from China, 

although the supplier details on the 

invoice are often given as New York. 

They have been tested and found to 

be unsafe as well as not delivering 

any tangible energy savings. A safety 

recall has been issued but consumers 

are warned that these 

devices can still be purchased from 

outside the UK on the internet and it 

is likely that fraudsters will continue 

to use the “energy and money 

saving” ruse to sell them.

Ex-chief constable 

calls for inquiry 

into son’s death 

THE father of a BBC journalist, who was wellknown 

for covering the Stratford district for many 

years, has called for an inquiry into his son’s death. 

Russell Joslin, aged 50, 

who was a reporter and 

broadcaster for BBC 

Coventry and Warwickshire 

since 1994, died in hospital 

on Monday. 

It is believed that he was 

first admitted to St 

Warwickshire, has called for 

an inquiry into how his 

complaints about alleged 

harassment by a female colleague 

were handled. 

Mr Joslin Snr has told the 

BBC that his son had mental 

health problems over the 

past six months and should 

have received more help 

from BBC managers. 

He said that he did “not 

blame the BBC but management 

did not save him.”

and condolences are with 

Russell Joslin’s family at 

this sad time. This is a difficult 

time for everyone who 

knew him.

Fun, not fright at church’s Halloween party 

IT’S fun not fright at the first ever 

Angels and Saints party at Holy 

Trinity Church, in Stratford, 

tomorrow (Wednesday). 

The church is holding the fancy 

dress party for children aged four to 

11 as an alternative to potentially 

frightening Halloween celebrations. 

Children are invited to dress up as 

angels or saints, and there will be 

pumpkin carving, a bouncy castle, 

games, pizza and prizes for the best 

costumes. 

Halloween (or Hallowe’en) has 

become associated with all things 

scary but in fact its original meaning 

is ‘All Hallows Eve’, the evening 

before All Saints’ Day. This is a time 

when many Christians throughout 

the world remember and celebrate 

the saints—people who were especially 

good, courageous and loving 

because of their Christian faith and 

their belief in Jesus as the ‘Light of 

the World’. For Christians Hallowe’en, 

rather than being a time to 

be afraid or to frighten others, is a 

reminder of the power of light to 

overcome darkness and the power of 

love to overcome evil. 

Pioneer lay minister Rachel Saum, 

who is organising the event, said: 

“Although it can seem harmless to 

many adults, Hallowe’en can be 

frightening for children, which is why 

we decided to provide a child-friendly 

alternative to dressing up as witches 

and going ‘trick or treating’.” 

The party will be held in the parish 

centre from 5.30 to 7pm. All children 

are welcome, whether or not they are 

members of the congregation. For

A £5,000 

boost for the 

local CAB 

STRATFORD Citizens Advice Bureau has 

recently received a grant of £5,000 from the 

Nationwide Foundation to support its work. 

The funding will be used 

to undertake home visits and 

drop in advice sessions for 

older people requiring financial, 

housing and benefit 

advice. This will benefit 

older people throughout the 

Stratford district who are 

unable to travel to the bureau 

either due to ill health or disability, 

or because of difficulties 

with access to public 

transport in rural areas. 

Additional funding has 

also been provided by the 

Relief in Need charity and 

the C A Rookes Charitable 

Trust. 

The Stratford CAB provides 

confidential, independent 

and free advice to 

anybody in the community 

on a huge range of topics 

from debt and benefits to 

employment, housing and 

family issues. 

Bureau manager Sue 

Green said: “We are very 

grateful to the Nationwide 

Foundation for this donation. 

Stratford District has above 

average levels of over 50s, 

many of whom live in the 

district'’s rural areas and are 

in the top 20 per cent most 

deprived nationally in relation 

to barriers to housing 

and services. 

“As a result of this 

funding a greater number of 

older people will be able to 

remain in their homes, be in 

receipt of the correct benefits, 

be able to afford adequate 

heating and food, and 

remain in contact with support 

organisations, so 

helping to reduce isolation.”

care baby unit 

A BABY and toddler class has raised more than £800 for 

Warwick Hospital’s special care baby unit, by hosting a 

charity birthday party. 

Dandy Development held the party at Offchurch Village 

Hall to mark its first year of operation, and raised £834.36. 

Parents and children enjoyed a bouncy castle, outdoor soft 

play package, cookery sessions, face-painting, balloon 

modelling, Strider Bike assault course, crafts and stalls.

Online help for those 

dealing with dementia 

A PIONEERING online 

resource for people 

affected by dementia has 

been launched in Warwickshire. 

The Living Well with 

Dementia Portal brings 

together essential advice and 

resources for people with the 

condition, their carers, and 

staff from health and social 

care. 

In Warwickshire alone 

there are currently 7,100 

people living with dementia 

in the county—a figure 

which is expected to rise by 

34 per cent. before 2021. 

At Shire Hall in Warwick, 

dementia experts and 

campaigners joined together 

with local professionals and 

people affected by the 

condition for a 

demonstration of the new 

resource which is available 

on www.warwickshire.gov.

Cllr Jose Compton (Cons, 

Leek Wootton), the county’s 

dementia champion said: 

“Many people are frightened 

of dementia and reluctant to 

think or talk about it, both 

before and after a diagnosis. 

Added to this, misconceptions

conditions are common. The 

Coventry and Warwickshire 

Dementia Portal helps to 

dispel the myths and gives 

practical advice and links to 

resources so people can live 

well with the condition.” 

The portal is the work of 

the Living Well with 

Dementia Partnership, a 

group of organisations from 

across Coventry and Warwickshire 

who have teamed 

up to address the issues surrounding 

the condition by 

providing vital information 

and support. 

John Linnane, director of 

public health at NHS Warwickshire 

and Warwickshire 

County Council, explained: 

“Carers told us that they 

wanted a one stop place to go 

to for information about 

dementia diagnosis and to 

find out more about living 

well with the condition. Professionals 

also wanted to 

know how to best support 

people they come into contact 

with, whether they have 

dementia or support someone 

who does.”

returns to his old college 

FORMER student and award winning 

film-maker Khurrum M Sultan 

returned to Stratford College, where 

he studied a BTEC in media production, 

to discuss his amazing career so 

far and show his most acclaimed film 

to current budding film-makers. 

A dozen or so media students were 

selected to meet Khurrum and were 

lucky enough to view his award-winning 

film in the college’s newly refurbished 

TV studio.

Hear Our Voices, a series of testimonials 

from people affected by terrorism,

Barrack Obama and his Secretary of 

State, Hillary Clinton, he spoke of 

the experience he had at Stratford 

College. 

“We were made to feel as if we 

were film-makers from the start,” he 

said. “I learned all the basics of what 

I do here; going to university afterwards 

almost felt like a step back—I 

have missed it.” Commenting on the 

new TV studio, Khurrum said, “It’s 

fantastic – it’s even better than when I 

was here”. 

Khurrum is now moving on to his 

new projects which include a film 

titled My Friend Erhin to be shown at 

the Chicago Children’s Film Festival, 

which is Academy qualifying so could 

see him nominated for an Oscar. 

Khurrum is also about to start work on 

a documentary about illegal immigration 

for the British Foreign Office and 

has just bought the rights to a controversial 

book which he plans to turn 

into his first feature film.

Sick son saves 

fraudster from 

prison sentence 

A MAN from Warwick gave away his share from 

the sale of his mother’s home to his children to 

avoid paying solicitors who had applied for him to 

be declared bankrupt. 

But at Warwick Crown 

Court, Samuel Kelsey 

escaped being jailed after a 

judge heard that his son, to 

whom he gave some of the 

money, is seriously ill. 

Kelsey, aged 60, of Pattens 

Road, Warwick, who 

had admitted an Insolvency 

Act offence of fraudulently 

disposing of assets, was sentenced 

to four months in 

prison suspended for 12 

months. He was also ordered 

to take part in a specified 

activity for ten days and to 

do 120 hours of unpaid 

work. 

Inheritance 

Prosecutor Rhona Campbell 

said Kelsey became 

involved in an inheritance 

dispute with his sister in relation 

to their late mother’s 

home in Kipling Avenue, 

Warwick. It led to him 

instructing solicitors Wright 

Hassall to act for him in January 

2008 to establish that he 

had an interest in the house 

and to prevent his sister disposing 

of it. 

Regular and repeated bills 

were sent by the solicitors 

for their work, but a theme 

throughout the litigation was 

of delayed payments and 

cheques being referred back 

to the drawer. 

Eventually a compromise 

was reached in the original 

dispute, with his sister getting 

60 per cent of the proceeds 

of the sale and Kelsey 

getting 40 per cent. 

By then he owed £12,806 

to Wright Hassall, who suggested 

that his share of the 

house sale should be paid to 

them for their fee to be 

deducted before forwarding 

the balance. 

When that failed the solicitors 

secured a county court 

judgement against him in the 

sum of £14,932—but were 

still not paid and a petition 

for bankruptcy was granted 

in August 2010. 

But it turned out that 

Kelsey had approached the 

solicitors who were dealing 

with the sale to divide his 

£41,000 share from the sale 

between his three children. 

It was a deliberate step to 

avoid money going into his 

estate when he knew a 

judgement was to be made 

against him, said Miss 

Campbell. 

The court heard that about 

four weeks earlier Kelsey’s 

son Jason had gone into hospital 

for a stomach operation 

which had revealed another 

serious condition and the 

case was adjourned for medical 

evidence to be obtained. 

At the resumed hearing 

Amy Jacobs, defending, said 

Kelsey’s son, who has had a 

number of conditions over a 

number of years which have 

affected him badly, had been

Buzz to offer food bank 

for needy under-18s 

VOLUNTEERS are needed to support 

an arts and community centre in Stratford 

that plans to link with a new food 

bank in the town, reports Sarah Evans. 

The Buzz, at St Gregory’s Hall, in 

Henley Street, will offer food to under 

18-year-olds who are in need. It is 

believed that one third of Stratford’s 

population lives below the poverty line. 

The Buzz Food Hub will run after 

school, from next Monday, every day of 

the week until 5.30pm. It will offer free 

food to those in need and inexpensive 

food to their friends. At the same time, a 

range of activities will take place, 

including Warhammer, martial arts, 

singing and drama. 

Lindsey Allwork, who runs The 

Buzz, said that professional tutors will 

be coming on board and she also hoped 

a local organisation could help fund at 

least the first half term of the scheme. 

But more volunteers were needed to 

help run, monitor and support the work. 

Volunteers need to be CRB checked and 

be able to help out for two hours a week.
