Lib Dems fall out
on eve of election

ONE of Stratford District Council’s Lib Dem councillors
resigned from the party this week to become
an Independent Liberal Democrat following an
ongoing dispute with a fellow Lib Dem member of
the authority.
Cllr Daren Pemberton (Bidford and Salford) made the move
following what he claims to be the failure of the party leadership
to support him in his complaints against Cllr Peter
Barnes (Lib Dem, Welford).
The issue revolves around the
fact although Cllr Barnes is the district
councillor for Welford, he is
also the Warwickshire county councillor
for Bidford, which Cllr Pemberton
represents at district level.
Cllr Barnes is standing again for
Bidford in the county elections next
Thursday.
In a statement this week Cllr
Pemberton claimed that Cllr Barnes
had, over the years, “undermined
and compromised” his position as a
district councillor. Cllr Pemberton
said he had raised the matter with
both the current leader of the party,
Cllr Richard Cheney (Lib Dem,
Shipston) and his predecessor, Cllr
Hazel Wright (Lib Dem, Studley).
However, the group had been
unwilling or unable to exercise any
control over Cllr Barnes to ensure
he did not “interfere” in district
council matters.
“Peter has consistently failed to
honour an agreement to refrain from
publishing material relating to district
council matters in the ward
without repercussions from the Lib
Dem group,” said Cllr Pemberton.
“In short, I have not been supported
by them in this matter.”
Cllr Barnes told the Midweek
Herald that the argument revolved
around publications by him (Cllr
Barnes) of a regular Lib Dem news
sheet. “As far as I’m concerned
we’ve bent over backwards for
him,” said Cllr Barnes.
He added: “I wanted him to come
in with my newsletter – which I and
others think is very good—but he
wouldn’t.”
In response to Cllr Pemberton’s
complaints about the party leadership,
Cllr Cheney told the Midweek
Herald: “I am disappointed at his
decision, but I am pleased that he
remains as a Liberal Democrat on
the council.”
In a telling comment in his resignation
statement, Cllr Pemberton
said: “While I expect my political
opponents to criticise me I do not
anticipate being shot at from behind
by my own side.” And he added: “I
shall continue to serve the residents
of the Bidford and Salford ward to
the best of my ability and will report
on what I have done honestly and
without spin or airbrushing out the
contribution of others.”

Over 130 on the
run for Shipston
Home Nursing
MORE than 130 people turned out to support Shipston
Home Nursing in a 5.5-mile sponsored fun run,
reports Matt Wilson.
Runners, joggers and dog walkers gathered on
the lawn in the grounds of Walton Hall on 21st
April before setting off through the Walton Hall
Estate. Teams from Walton Hall Leisure Centre
and Peter Clarke Estate Agents who had sponsored
the event, led the way, followed by all the enthusiastic
walkers.
Josh Newman won the race, completing the
course in 33 minutes, closely followed by Clive Griffiths
two minutes later. The first young runners
back were Sam Weaving in 39 minutes, followed by
George Graham, last year’s winner.
The first women back were Jessica Stout and
Helen Simms in 50 minutes followed closely by Amy
Johnson. Over £900 was raised for the charity on
the day.
Have-a-go
mum receives
bravery award
A WARWICK mother-of-two who was hit with a
spanner when she stopped a thief breaking into a car
has been given an award for bravery by the police.
Deborah King, 43, challenged a man she saw rummaging
around inside her neighbour’s vehicle.
“He went to run away and that’s when the adrenaline
kicked in and I just grabbed him,” she said.

“He pulled a spanner out to lamp me. I was holding
on to his hand and he tried to bat me off.”
The man rapped her over the knuckles several
times but that’s when Deborah got him in a headlock.
“My brother taught me well!” she joked.
She shouted for help, and a neighbour came out
and grabbed the man. Deborah phoned the police
and the thief was subsequently sentenced to 14 weeks
in jail. She had to go to hospital for an X-ray but
luckily her hand was not broken, just heavily
bruised.
Last week Deborah was given a Good Citizen
award by Warwickshire chief constable Andy
Parker. “I would do it again,” she said. “I just don’t
like people taking what is not theirs!”

Over 50 teachers flock to learn about farming
HATTON Adventure Farm has welcomed
scores of teachers from across
the Midlands to its site near Warwick,
to showcase its educational
value to children.
More than 50 teachers and their
families, representing some 40
schools from as far afield as
Worcester, Telford, Dudley and
Henley-on-Thames, visited Hatton
Adventure Farm to learn what the
attraction had to offer young children
as a possible venue for future
school trips.
Teachers were invited for a day of
talks and to tour the site, see the
facilities and enjoy a well-deserved
lunch. Due to the overwhelming
response, the teachers were divided
into two groups—the first group visited
the farm on 16th March and the
second visited last week.
The educational programme
‘Learning through discovery, fun
and adventure’, which covers topics
in the national curriculum for Key
Stage 1 and 2 pupils, teaches children
about farming, where food
comes from and rural life. It
includes programmes such as Field
to Fork, Caring for Animals, Natural
Environment and Animal
Adaptation.
Tessa Owuye, from Warwick
Nursery School and Children’s Centren
said: “Hatton Adventure Farm
offers a fantastic venue to educate
children on farming and rural life. I
found it enjoyable and informative,
especially catering for nursery-age
children.
“The staff were brilliant and it is
certainly a venue I would hope we
can bring some of our children to in
the future,” she said.

‘Legal high’ team
are commended
A POLICE officer and a PCSO from Stratford
whose actions led to a change in law after they
helped a teenager who took a ‘legal high’, have
been commended for their work.
Last year, PC Trevor Hall
and PCSO Claire Miller discovered
a 13-year-old boy
from Stratford in a set of
public toilets in the town
centre.
Hospital
The boy had to be rushed
to hospital in an ambulance
after taking the legal high,
Black Mamba, which he
told police he had bought at
a shop in Stratford.
PC Hall and other members
of the Stratford Safer
Neighbourhood Team,
along with officers from the
trading standards service,
visited the premises where
the drug was being sold.
PCSO Miller realised
from research that the drug
was being sold legally and a
decision was made to take
the matter up with Stratford
MP Nadhim Zahawi.

Children get
a chance to
draw on walls

CHILDREN had the chance to draw on walls and floors during a ‘goodbye
to the annexe’ party in the outbuilding at Stratford Methodist Church on
Thursday evening.
Work to start demolishing
the annexe at the rear of the
church started yesterday
(Monday) as part of a major
£1,125,000 redevelopment
project on the site.
Once demolition work is
complete, an archaeological
survey will take place on the
site, lasting around two
weeks.
As part of the redevelopment
the church will undergo
a major refurbishment, there
will be an outdoor soft play
area and improved indoor
facilities.
The design and access
statement by Vagdia and
Holmes Chartered Architects
on behalf of the church, said
that a small extension to the
rear of the main church worship
area will provide essential
toilet facilities.
Heating
There will also be an
extension to the existing
entrance area that will enable
a social mixing and interaction
space.
Among other work, the
current heating system will
be replaced with more
energy efficient boilers, and
energy rated windows will
also be fitted.
The annexe is currently
used for children’s activities
and adult learning classes.
Gillian Ledgard, one of the
volunteers on the toddler
group committee said at the
party: “We’re hoping by
November, there will be a
brand new activity room for
children—and for other
things, as anyone can book.”
The scheme was granted
planning permission by
Stratford District Council in
July 2010. Grant applications
and fundraising events have
been taking place at the
church since.
Dancing
at the
hub
A NEW dance class has been
started at a community ‘hub’
in Stratford, which offers
help to adults with learning
disabilities.
The dance classes are
being held at the hub at Stratford
Sports Club, on Tuesdays
between 1pm and 3pm.
The hubs are managed by
Bromford Support and Warwickshire
County Council,
and opened across the county
in October, to replace Warwickshire's
previous day
centre model.
Working with local businesses,
the hub at Stratford
Sports Club offers drop-in
style face-to-face support for
people.
Other activities at the Stratford
hub include arts and
crafts on a Monday between
10.30am and 12 noon, as well
as music on a Wednesday
from 10.30am until 12 noon.

to theatre for
Mencap
A STRATFORD man and his friend will put their best feet
forward when they walk from the Globe Theatre in London
to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford to raise
money for Heart of England Mencap.
Michael Fox, who works for Mencap, and his friend Phil
Bennett, from Shipston, decided to take up the walking
challenge to help support Mencap’s day service for people
with learning disabilities in Stratford. Last year the existing
day service closed so Heart of England decided to organise
its own version and Michael and Phil hope to raise £3,000
so the current day service can continue to help local people.
The pair put on their walking boots on 1st June and hope
to cover 17 miles each day before arriving in Stratford on
the 8th.

Hospital beds
cut as care is
given at home
THE number of beds at Ellen Badger Hospital, in Shipston, has been reduced
from 24 to 18 as part of a new medical model introduced in the town, which
is in partnership with local GPs.
This has involved
increasing the resource in
the community to provide
more care in the patient’s
own home and by reducing
the number of beds at the
hospital as in-patient
demand decreases.
South Warwickshire NHS
Foundation Trust said there
were many benefits for
patients receiving care at
home, including building
patient confidence in their
own environment, reducing
the risk of falls and losing
muscle strength, less risk of
catching infections, enabling
tailored care plans, as
well as easing the transition
from hospital back home.
The model was introduced
last year in the Nicol

STRATFORD mother of four Emma
Jones is celebrating a positive report
from her oncologist by walking a
marathon 26.2 miles for breast cancer.
Emma was diagnosed with breast
cancer in 2011 and rapidly underwent
surgery and several gruelling rounds of
chemotherapy.
Despite all this Emma has maintained
a phenomenally positive attitude
and is determined to support the Walk
the Walk charity.
She has managed to chivvy 11
friends to join her in this tough walk
and ‘Shakespeare’s Sisters’ will be
striding out from Battersea Power Station
to walk the Moonwalk on 11 May.
All 12 have been putting in practice
but have yet to make it out as a team
due to work commitments, however

Jailed for knife
attack on friend
WHEN two friends argued in their room above a
Henley Chinese restaurant, one of them went to
the kitchen and returned with a sharp knife and
slashed the other man’s arm open.
The 15cm long “unpleasant
open wound” was so
deep that surgeons had to
perform a four-hour operation
to repair the damage to
victim Sheng Cheng Bo’s
arm, a judge has heard.
His attacker Zhong Wei
Yu, aged 50, of High Street,
was jailed for two years after
he pleaded guilty at Warwick
Crown Court to a charge of
malicious wounding.

had been friends for four
years and shared a room over
the Sans Chinese restaurant,
where they both worked, in
High Street, Henley.
Yu owed Mr Cheng some
money and there was still
£150 outstanding which he
was asked for at the beginning
of the year—and he

hospitals, doctors and day centres, and is a lifeline to many people. An allowance of 45p per mile
is paid for authorised journeys.
1st Tiddington Scout Group – Scout, Cub and Beaver Leaders. Leaders are needed to
deliver an exciting, challenging and fun programme of activities for young people. Training is
provided through recognised courses and hands on experience. Volunteers are also needed for
the group’s Management Team.
Age UK Warwickshire – Buddy Volunteer. A buddy is needed to accompany an older lady to
one of the Age UK Lunch Clubs on a Tuesday or Thursday, or possibly both. The buddy will need
to be friendly and outgoing as well as having experience of working with older people.
National Gardens Scheme – Publicity and PR Volunteer. Come and join a team of 9 people
working with 135 gardens in Warwickshire. Help to source advertisers for the annual county
booklet and promote the charity generally. Past experience in publicity, journalism or public
relations needed.
Shakespeare Birthplace Trust – Various roles. With the new season underway, volunteers are
needed to carry out tours of the gardens, exhibition hosting at Hall’s Croft and Living History /
Visitor Shop roles at Mary Arden’s Farm.
Breast Cancer Campaign – Group Member. Join a team of volunteers in Stratford-upon-Avon
raising funds and awareness of Breast Cancer Campaign. Activities of the group include
fundraising events, presentations to local schools and campaigning in the local area.

But an argument then
broke out between the two
men which became more
heated and developed into a
fight in the room they shared.
The restaurant’s chef, who
had the room next door, came
in and separated them, telling
them to grow up, and then
returned to his own room.
But Yu then left the room,
went downstairs to the
restaurant’s kitchen and
returned with a sharp knife
with which he slashed his
room-mate to the upper arm
and shoulder.
When he was arrested Yu
accepted causing the injury
to his friend, explaining that
Mr Cheng had been getting
the better of him and he had
got the knife because he was
angry.
Matthew Barnes, defending,
said that in China Yu was
a member of a spiritual practice
which was disapproved
of by the Chinese government,
so he fled and has been
working legitimately while
seeking asylum in this
country.
The reason for that out-ofcharacter
behaviour was a
combination of alcohol and
provocation. They were
arguing because the complainant
was drinking beer he
had effectively stolen from
their boss, and Mr Yu was
annoyed because he had got
him the job, said Mr Barnes.

Schools join
town’s big
spring clean
PRIMARY schools in Stratford
took part in a big spring clean to
help make their town look nice and
tidy.
Alveston, Bridgetown, and The
Willows CE schools took part in
the ‘Spring Clean Up’ organised by
Stratford Town Council.
This is the second year local
schools have got involved and
Bridgetown Primary takes part in
litter picking duties throughout the
year.
The project encourages youngsters
to support their community

OVER 300 prescription
spectacles collected in
Wellesbourne have been sent
to Tanzania by the Rotary
Club of Warwick.
During March the Cooperative
store in the village
collected glasses from customers.
Last week, these
were passed onto Tim
Brooke, who supports health
workers in Tanzania and has
already provided nurses there
with motorbikes so they can
reach patients across a wider
area, and faster.
Once the spectacles arrive,
an optical nurse will sort
them using a lensometer. He
will then prescribe the appropriate
pairs to those in the
towns of Masasi and
Nuwala.
The Rotary club plans to
organise more collections to
follow up this work.

Buy a guide dog
challenge for the
people of Stratford
A CHALLENGE to people in Stratford to raise
money and name some Guide Dog puppies
after Shakespeare characters was launched on
Thursday.
The three-year challenge will also coincide with the
annual Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations and Stratford
Town Council will be inviting the Shakespeare
puppies to the celebrations in 2016.
The local branch of Guide Dogs launched the appeal
in the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre gardens
and welcomed Olympic Paralympic gold medallist

James was joined by the Mayor of Stratford, Cllr
Keith Lloyd, plus local schools and businesses who are
raising money for the appeal, as well as Guide Dog volunteers
and trainers from the area. James, who is the
ambassador of the project, told the Midweek Herald:
“When I used to live in Reading, I volunteered down
there, so it’s great to do something for Stratford.”
Stratford High School student 12-year-old Navi
Jathin plans to raise £1,500 for the campaign, by not
receiving any birthday presents over the next couple of
years. So far she has raised £117. Navi and her family
have been puppy walking for two years, and are currently
puppy walking their second dog ‘Valerie’. She
hopes to name a puppy ‘Hamlet’ and said: “We have
got involved to help people who do not have the free
time that we have. David Mitchell has inspired me, and
so has my Nan [Jackie Horton]. I’m happy to not have
presents, as I’m doing it for this puppy project.”
Jackie, a volunteer who started the project, added: “I
needed something to focus on, so I volunteered to
become a puppy walker. The rest they say is history.”
Jackie said she was proud of Navi: “At 12, I wanted
the latest trainers and clothes, but Navi just wants to
raise money for the guide dogs.”

the service receives no government funding but relies on

on to transform the lives of blind and partially-sighted

Warwick Prep
AFTER being crowned Midlands and Northern Champions,
Warwick Preparatory School U11 netball squad
headed to London to compete in the finals of the
National Prep School Netball Championships where 28
teams competed.
In their first three matches, Warwick secured great
wins over Feltonfleet, Bishopsgate and Dumpton. The
next three matches were extremely tight with Warwick
narrowly missing out on a place in the quarter-finals
and finishing third in their group.
Nonetheless, this was the best result Warwick have
ever had at the national finals, finishing within the top
12 teams in the country.
“We are extremely proud of all the girls in the face of
some tough opposition they all played with great determination
and perseverance,” said Victoria Sarson, head
of PE at Warwick.

Champions
slip up again
MIDLAND Alliance champions Stratford Town
slipped to a second successive defeat when they
went down 2-1 at Gornal Athletic on Saturday,
writes Mick Clewes.
The result came hard on
the heels of last Thursday’s
2-0 reverse at home to Westfields.
Both Westfields and
Gornal are fighting it out for
second place in the league
table.
Town led 1-0 at half-time
on Saturday after a seventh
minute strike from the
returning Chris Lait.
But the Black Country
side dominated after the
break and goals from Rion
Francis-Mills and Callum
Martin gave them a
deserved victory.
Town manager Carl
Adams said: “We were outfought
on Saturday. Our
standards have dropped
since we won the league a
week ago, and that’s disappointing.
“They were hungrier than
us and were stronger than us
the longer the game went
on.”
Last Thursday, a Melvin
Gourlay own goal gave
Westfields the lead in the
second period before Aiden
Thomas made sure the
points went back to Hereford
with a last-minute
strike past Town keeper
Chris Jay.
Town had to play the
second-half without leading
scorer Tony Robinson, who
was shown a red card after
becoming involved with a
Westfields player in the
tunnel at half-time.
The referee took no
action against Westfields as
he could not identify the
player involved.
Adams said: “There was a
coming together between
Robbo and their lad and the
referee identified our player
but not theirs and sent
Robbo off which seems a bit
harsh.
“But Westfields are a
decent team so I have no
complaints about the
result.”
Town get the chance to
return to winning ways
when they travel to Continental
Star on Wednesday,
kick-off 7.45pm.
Star play their home
games at Rushall Olympic.
They complete their
championship-winning
campaign on Saturday when
Gornal Athletic are again
the opponents, this time at
the DCS Stadium in a 3pm
kick-off.
Podium places celebrated
AT the two-day weekend championships,
Octavian Droobers orienteers were celebrating
podium places.
The British Sprint Championships were
staged around the Loughborough University
campus.
After the morning heats several club
members made it into the A Finals: Nathan
Lawson who won the M16 class 2.7k
course in 17.29mins, Andy Simpson who
won the M40 class 2.7k course in
16.09mins, Mike Hampton won the M65
class 1.6k course in 11.34mins and Anne
Straube won the W35 class 2.2k course in
18.49mins. Lesley Ross was 3rd on the
W45 class 1.9k course in 16.22mins.
The British Middle Distance championships
were held the following day at
Stanton Moor in the Peak District and the
heather and boulder-strewn courses suited
several club members.
Harriet Lawson was crowned W18
British Middle Distance Champion taking
32.05mins on the 4k course with 150 metres
of climb. Will Gardner was 2nd M20 on the
4.8k course with 190 metres of climb in
32.16mins and Matt Elkington was 3rd in
his M18 class taking 35.06mins. Andy
Simpson M40 was also on the podium
coming 3rd in his class on the 4.5k course
in 33.57mins. Fourth places were achieved
by Anne Straube W35 and Trevor Simpson
M75.
Over 75 competitors appreciated the
local event and four courses put on by Anne
Straube, helped by Roman Kotecky, around
the Warwick University Campus and many
newcomers enjoyed their first experience of
the sport.
The Yellow 1k course was won by newcomer
Felix Lunn M12 in 11.36mins and
newcomer Dylan Parkinson M7 came 2nd
in 14.12mins ahead of Pippa Smart W10
15.13mins. Rob Smart M45 won the Short
2.1k course in 28.04mins, Philip Oliver
M45 was 2nd in 40.16mins and Sophie
Oliver 3rd W14 40.27mins.
The Middle length course of 3.2k was
won by Riina Kuuselo W35 in 25.22mins;
David Lawson M50 was 2nd in 27.03mins
and Harriet Lawson W18 3rd in 28.31mins.
The challenging Long 5.6k course with map
memory was won by Matt Elkington M18
in 46.53mins, Chris Embrey M21 from
Harlequins was 2nd in 48.18mins and Chris
McCartney M40 was 3rd in 48.22mins.
Bank on family fun
WARWICK Racecourse is pulling out all the stops
for its Family Fun Day race meeting on Bank Holiday
Monday with free children’s entertainment
galore in the Course Enclosure.
The even better news is that a family ticket
booked in advance for just £30, which includes entry
for two adults and two children in both enclosures,
also includes one serving of ice cream per child.
Huw Williams, general manager, Warwick Racecourse,
said: “Children and adults alike will love our
first dedicated family fun day of 2013 as it has something
for everyone, whatever age they are.
“The Course Enclosure will be at the heart of the
action for the youngsters who can burn off their
energy throughout the afternoon with plenty of
entertainment just for them. It’s also a great excuse
for the adults to come racing and offers exceptional
value for money, especially when booked in
advance.”
The race action begins at 2.10pm with gates open
two hours before. Tickets are also available on the
day for both the Course and Main Enclosure, while
children aged 17 and under get in free when accompanied
by an adult.
“Horse racing is a great sporting spectacle and
also the perfect way to spend some quality time with
family and friends. Our Bank Holiday Fun Day is an
ideal opportunity to introduce your family to the
sport of kings and enjoy the first-class facilities at

WARWICKSHIRE Women Bowls senior vice-president
Maureen Edwards welcomed county president Carol
Norton (Stoke BC) and the county ladies to Rugby Thornfield
Bowling Club for the opening event of the season, the
SVP Gala.
The weather was kind and after a brief shower following
the first session, which gave time to buy more tombola
tickets, the afternoon was completed in the sunshine.
The gala winner was Hazel Goodman (Lillington BC)
with a score of 28 closely followed by Di Wilkinson (Stoke
BC) and Janet Greenwell (Wolvey BC) - the booby prize
went to Margaret Grosvenor (Lillington BC).
The afternoon finished with tea, cakes and lots of
laughter - a perfect start to a great season.

Panthers lose opener
STRATFORD Cricket Club new signing Alastair Craig
hit 43 on his Birmingham & District League Division
Two debut and Sam Douthwaite added 41 in the Panthers’
total of 184 for eight at home to Halesowen.
But the visitors raced to a nine-wicket victory with
more than 16 overs remaining after Mo Ishtiaq
smashed an unbeaten 112 on his return to the club and
Kester Moseley accompanied him with 53 not out.
