YET another Stratford district councillor
has switched party allegiances, giving the
impression the authority is undergoing
some kind of minor political meltdown.
The latest defector is Cllr Eric Holder, one of
three Liberal Democrats representing Studley,
who has now become an Independent.
His move came hot on
the heels of the decision by
Cllr Daren Pemberton
(Bidford and Salford) to
leave the Lib Dems and
join the Conservatives.
These manoeuvres, in
turn, have come on top of
the recent defections of
three Conservatives—
Helen Hayter (Snitterfield),
David Wise (Southam) and
Richard Hamburger (Harbury)—to
the Independents.
Disappointed
The political make-up of
Stratford District Council
now is: Conservatives, 30
seats; Lib Dems, 14; Independents,
six; Stratford
First Independents, two;
Labour, one.
On hearing of Cllr
Holder’s defection, one of
his fellow Studley Lib Dem
councillors and former
opposition group leader,
Cllr Hazel Wright, told the
Midweek Herald: “I’ve still
not received a clear explanation
from Eric as to why
he’s made this change.
“I’m disappointed at the
cars
move because I don’t think
that by himself as an Independent
he’ll be able to
achieve as much as before,
so I don’t really think this
was in the best interests of
Studley.”
But Cllr Holder was
quite clear about why he’d
gone over to the Independents.
“I didn’t want to be
constrained by policies and
wanted to be free to vote
how I felt, with my own
conscience,” he told the
Midweek Herald.
He added: “I think I can
do all right on my own,
despite what Cllr Wright
has said. I did try to contact
her, but at the time she was
on holiday. I’ve explained
to several local residents
why I’ve gone Independent
and those I’ve spoken to
said they’ll still support
me.
“Even though I’m no
longer a Liberal Democrat
I’ve still got Studley as my
priority. I feel a lot better
by going Independent. I can
vote according to my conscience
and I’m not tied by
party policies.”

Top band’s video
puts body pop
Joe in a spin
A 13-YEAR-OLD from Warwick who taught himself
to body pop and breakdance is tomorrow
(Wednesday) being filmed for pop band Scouting
for Girls’ new music video, reports Matt Wilson.
Joe Evans, twice runner-up of Stratford’s Got
Talent, is going to a secret location in Scotland to
join the band on their video shoot, but he admitted
that at first, he didn’t know who they were.
When his sister told him about the band, who
have had a No 1 Triple Platinum album, the Myton
School pupil got “very excited but quite nervous.”
After spending some time with the director last
week discussing what was expected of him, the enormity
sunk in. “Wow, I’m really doing this,” he said.
Last week he made it to the final of Britain’s Got
Variety, a talent show judged by Giles Cooper, executive
producer of the Royal Variety Show. It will be
televised on the Showcase Channel on Sky later in
the year.
Alcester
homes plan
is rejected
PART of a hugely controversial scheme to build 350
homes in Alcester was rejected by councillors at a
four-hour meeting in the town last Thursday
evening, reports Preston Witts.
Members of Stratford District Council’s west
area planning committee voted against their own
officials’ recommendation and refused proposals
for 160 homes on land off Allimore Lane.
But the meeting lasted so long that the committee
was unable to deal with the second part of the application
for 190 homes in the same locality and will
have to reconvene on another evening in order to
deal with it.
After the meeting one of the leading campaigners
against the plans, Andy Mann, told the Midweek
Herald: “We felt it was a resounding success. We
thought it would be a close vote that would come
close to the wire.”
In the event the committee decided by seven votes
to one, with one abstention, to go against their own
officials’ advice and reject the scheme.
Mr Mann, who is deputy chairman of the Eclipse
Road Residents’ Group, said the challenge now was
to see the other development, for 190 homes,
refused as well.
“We shall wait and see, but we have certainly got
several issues we want the committee to address on
this next one,” he said. One of the issues was the fact
that the scheme envisaged providing only 38 per
cent of the public open space required under the
district council’s guidelines.
Among reasons for rejecting the 160-home development
was that it was too close to the A435 bypass.
Windows would have to be double-glazed and permanently
shut.

Faulty exhaust led to
replica Mustang crash
landing at airfield
A REPLICA Second World War Mustang aircraft,
which featured in the film Saving Private Ryan
crash landed at Wellesbourne Airfield last October
because of a faulty exhaust.
The three-quarter size
aircraft called, ‘Big Beautiful
Doll,’ was seriously
damaged but the pilot
unhurt after the crash which
saw him land the stricken
aircraft safely on the afternoon
of 30th October.
According to air accident
investigators, the plane’s
throttle jammed and the
under carriage would not
lower itself which meant
the pilot finally landed with
virtually no power and with
the wheels up.

blames the initial throttle
problems on an exhaust
fault which released hot
gases into the engine bay
causing damage to the
throttle cable.
The 2009 built aircraft
from Hampshire was
returning to Wellesbourne
Mountford Airfield after a
local flight.
However, the report says
that as it approached the airfield
the 52-year-old pilot
who had 1,420 hours flying
experienced discovered that
his throttle was jammed
fully open.
As a result he prepared to
attempt to cut the engine
when he was in landing
range of the airfield and

The report says that about
two miles from the field the
pilot lowered the flaps and
landing gear in a bid to slow
the aircraft down and he
continued to attempt to free
the throttle lever but found
that it suddenly snapped
back into the idle setting
and would not move forwards.
“The pilot was uncertain
whether he could make the
airfield and raised the flaps
and landing gear to reduce
drag, while he considered
other forced landing
options. As he drew nearer
to Wellesbourne he realised

selected the landing gear
down. However, air traffic
control radioed to tell him
that the landing gear was
“visibly” not down and so
he committed to a “wheels
up landing” which was successful,”
the report concluded.
Tom’s cake sales for
Save the Children
A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Alcester boy who organised cake
sales at his school and at home has raised £415 for Save
the Children.
Tom Evans, pictured left, a pupil at Haselor School,
saw a television advert for the charity which inspired him
to help the ill children featured in it. He made posters and
cakes and got his friends to bake cakes for the sale which
took place after school on 17th May. He then ran a sale at
his home the following morning for family and friends.

Autism
viewed
through
art
STUDENTS from Stratford
College expressed their feelings
about autism through art
recently as part of an innovative
new ‘creative consultation’
by Warwickshire
County Council.
The council is carrying out
a major public consultation
to find the best ways to help
children and adults with
autism and their families.
Professional artist Janetka
Platun travelled to the college
to get some creative
feedback from the students in
the form of paintings and
models.

Charlotte Power, the college’s
learner services manager,
said: “The students who
participated in the consultation
session really enjoyed
working with Janetka, and
they gave some valuable
insights into what it is like to
be on the autistic spectrum.”
The aim is to get as many
people as possible fully
involved in the in-depth consultation
which will inform
and shape a new three-year
all ages autism strategy for
the county.
One in 100 people—children
and adults—live with
autism in the UK and there
could be many more who
have not been diagnosed.
The consultation, which
runs until Friday, is aimed at
young people and adults
living with autism (whether
diagnosed or not), carers,
service providers and professionals.
The county council
wants to find out what really
matters to people and what
kind of support services
would make a real difference
to their lives.

bus or car-sharing. The
advisers claim residents will
be able to both save money
and improve their health.

doors and talking to people
at community events in the
coming weeks, they will be
offering their “personal
travel planning” service.

give charities
a major boost
A MAJOR pet show in Warwickshire could lead to
a massive boost for two charities.
The Heart of England
Community Foundation and
Warwickshire and Northamptonshire
Air Ambulance
have joined forces to hold a
charity dog walk at the Pet
Show at Stoneleigh Park in
Warwickshire.
Dog-owners
The show is taking place
on Saturday and Sunday
20th and 21st July with

attend across the weekend

dog-owners to take part in a
1km walk around the
grounds to raise money for

Council staff turn pennies
into £32,000 for good causes
STAFF at Warwickshire County Council have raised
over £32,000 for good causes in the past 12 months,
with the vast majority donated to local charities.
Employees fundraise
through a variety of events
including monthly dress
down days and cake sales,
raising money for both
national and local charities.
Between April last year
and this March, more than
£4,500 was raised in this
way, benefiting 12 different
charities nominated by
employees.
David Carter, strategic
director for resources said:
“Our employees have an
excellent track record when
it comes to raising money for
good causes. Many staff take
on their own personal challenges
to raise money for
causes close to their hearts,
as well as joining in with
regular events through the
year.”
The council also encourages
its staff to take part in
the Pennies from Heaven
scheme.
This sees current and
retired employees donate the
odd pennies from their take
home pay and pension to the
council’s chosen charities of
Myton Hospice and the
Mary Ann Evans Hospice. In
2012, the pennies raised
more than £27,800.
Since joining the scheme
in 2006, more than £175,500
has been raised, including
Gift Aid, and the county
council has been awarded a
gold award, as 25 per cent of
staff are now signed up to
donate their pennies.
The council was the first
local authority to achieve the
award and one of only 15
employers to receive it
nationally, joining the likes
of the Bank of England and
Barclays Bank.

Campaign
to improve
boat safety
WARWICKSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service and
the Boat Safety Scheme are asking local boat
owners to make vital safety checks this week as
part of an annual campaign to make boating safer.
The campaign, which was
originally created by the fire
and rescue service in partnership
with the Boat Safety
Scheme in September 2006,
aims to persuade boaters to
have smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors fitted.
During the week, firefighters
will be visiting
marinas and waterways to
engage with residents living
or working on boats. Messages
will also be sent out
via Bluetooth to urge
boaters to apply for a free
boat fire safety check.
The aim of the checks are
to give people the opportunity
to assess potential fire
hazards and then reduce the
risk by taking simple measures,
such as ensuring gas
appliances are installed and
maintained by qualified
engineers and not letting oil
or debris build up in the
bilges.
Warwickshire Fire and
Rescue service community
fire safety manager Moreno
Francioso said: “Although
boat fires are less common
than house fires, when they
do occur, they can have devastating
consequences because
of the confined air
space, the amount of combustible
materials and difficult
escape routes.
Therefore, having a working
smoke alarm to give the
early warning of the spread
of toxic smoke is extremely
important for all boaters.”
The most common causes
of fire on boats include:

into contact with a source of
ignition resulting in fire or

which are do-it-yourself

In the past 20 years, 30
boaters were killed in boat
fires nationally and another
30 lost their lives to the
‘silent killer’ carbon monoxide.
It’s not all doom and
gloom though as there are
simple steps that can be
taken to make boat ssafer.
These include:
■Fitting a suitable smoke
alarm.
■Making a fire escape
plan.
■Taking extreme care
when refuelling with petrol
or changing gas cylinders.
■Avoiding the use of
portable gas equipment on
board, where possible, and
store all gas canisters in special
gas lockers or open
places where any leaks will
flow overboard.
■Taking care when doing
repairs, and keep interiors
well ventilated if you’re
using adhesives, paints and
spirit based products

in the charity event on Saturday
15th June, along with teammates

The race from Jephson Gardens,
in Leamington, to Myton Fields, in
Warwick, will start at 12.45pm.

Burglar nabbed on
point of leaving UK
A BURGLAR who ransacked a number of houses
was identified by his DNA and arrested as he was
about to board a ferry out of the country.
And at Warwick Crown
Court Tomos Juchnevicius,
aged 38, of no fixed
address, was jailed for three
years after pleading guilty
to five charges of burglary.
Prosecutor Gary Cook
said that in October last
year an 85-year-old man
left his home in Myton
Crescent, Warwick, at
around ten in the morning.
His grandson, who was
also there, went out later in
the day—and when he
returned he found the house
had been broken into.
The intruder had scaled a
six-foot gate to get into the
back garden before forcing
a lock to get into the house
where he had carried out a
very untidy search.
He had escaped with
£4,500 worth of property
including jewellery and a
laptop computer—but DNA
found at the point of entry
led to Juchnevicius being
identified as the burglar.
Funeral
Earlier last year Juchnevicius
had broken into a
woman’s house in
Cheshunt, Hertfordshire,
while she was attending a
funeral and carried out an
untidy search before
escaping with property
worth £7,500.
And in July, as he fled
after being disturbed during
a break-in in Basildon,
Essex, he had threatened to
shoot an off-duty policeman
who was chasing him and

pulled something metallic
from his pocket.
After moving on from
Warwick, Juchnevicius carried
out further burglaries at
two houses in Hertfordshire.
But his DNA had been
found at the scenes of all
five raids, and he was
arrested in March as he
tried to board a ferry from
Holyhead to Ireland.
When he was questioned
Juchnevicius, a Lithuanian
with no previous convictions,
said he could not
really remember the burglaries,
but had been having
difficulties in England.
Tim Pole, defending,
explained: “He is a man
who had got himself into
debt, and he committed
these offences to service
that debt because he was
being threatened.”
He argued that the untidy
searches of the houses did
not amount to ransacking,
but the judge, Recorder
Richard Burns, responded:
“I’d call it ransacking.”
Jailing Juchnevicius,
Recorder Burns told him
through an interpreter:
“You have committed very
serious offences.
“I would think the appropriate
sentence after a trial
would be five years imprisonment;
but you have
pleaded guilty and have no
previous convictions.”

Thieving drug
addict jailed for
six more weeks
WITHIN a month of being given a suspended prison sentence a former Warwick
man had returned to his thieving ways to support himself and his drug
addiction.
But he was caught redhanded
when the police
found him ducking down in
a car he had broken into,
magistrates in Leamington
have heard.
Philip Tedstone aged 49,
formerly of Coton End, Warwick,
pleaded guilty at Warwickshire
Justice Centre to
two charges of theft, one of
interfering with a motor
vehicle and asked for 19
other thefts to be taken into
consideration.
He was jailed for six
weeks—but the chairman of
the bench, Irene Stark, told
him that that was consecutive
to six months of his suspended
sentence which he
was also ordered to serve.
Prosecutor Malcolm Stoddart
said that on 18th May
Tedstone had been arrested
and given bail over allegations
of theft and attempted
theft.

midnight, a woman living in
Avenue Road, Leamington,
looked out of her window

He had a sat-nav unit on
him, which the police found
had been stolen from
another car parked in the
area, and he had also stolen

Mr Stoddart added that at
the time Tedstone was subject
to an eight-month suspended
prison sentence
imposed on 19th April for
earlier offences of dishonesty.
Sarah Marshall, defending,
conceded: “The sheer
volume of the offences he
has committed over the last
few days will no doubt cause
the court some concern.
“But without his co-operation
the police would have
been unable to pin the TIC
[taken into consideration]
cases on Mr Tedstone.”
Of the thefts, Miss Marshall
explained: “He has
really hit rock bottom. He is
a drug-user, and was evicted
from the hostel in Coton
End. He is a heroin-user and
was also drinking heavily,
and he committed the crimes
to support himself on a dayto-day
basis.”

Historic trough marks
the heritage of Henley
A REMINDER of Henley’s
heritage as an
important centre of trade
has been put on display
for the benefit of the
people of the town by
house-builder Taylor
Wimpey.
The company has
installed an ancient stone
trough in an area of
public open space at its
recently completed Farriers
Cross development.
Thought to be more
than 200 years old, the
trough was originally situated
half a mile from its
current location on the
road leading from Henley
to Redditch, before it was
moved to the town’s cattle
market 70 to 80 years ago.
There it was used to water
cows, sheep and horses up
until the market was
closed in 2011 to make
way for the construction
of Farriers Cross.
Now the trough takes
pride of place in a landscaped
area in the appropriately-named
Market
Way, where it has been
planted with flowers by
Taylor Wimpey, to the
delight of Beaudesert and
Henley Joint Parish
Council.
Parish clerk Jenny
Walsh said: “The parish
council contacted Taylor
Wimpey when the cattle
market site was being
cleared to ask if the
trough could be preserved,
and we are
delighted with its new
lease of life.
“While it’s known as a
horse trough, there’s a

clash between Warwickshire
County BA and the Warwickshire
Women’s BA.
When county president
Mike Brayne set his select
side against a strong
women’s line-up he couldn't
have predicted registering a
six-rink 147-83 victory.
Brayne’s rink, consisting
of Colin Baldwin (Avenue
Leamington), Geoff Moran
(Norgren) and past president
Phil Green took on the
WWBA’s D Wilkinson,
president C Norton, J Hall
and J Corn.
A good start saw the
Gents race to a 17-5 halfway
lead.
In a punishing five-end
spell that lead was increased
to 30-6. Brayne and co
enjoyed the better of the
remaining ends to seal a 37-
9 win over WWBA President
Carol Norton’s rink.
Past president Aubrey
Brookhouse assisted by
Kelvin Rice (Entaco),
county secretary Arnold
Goad and Ken Chedgzoy
(Stratford) opened up a fiveend
10-0 lead over P Lowe,
C Harrison, S Thomas and
D Green.
With six ends to play
Brookhouse and co held a
20-9 advantage which they
extended to claim a 27-15
victory.

behind as A Lamperd,

The Gents restricted their
opponents to one shot while
increasing their own tally
by seven shots to win 23-

they could only reduce the
deficit as the Gents ran out
22-13 winners.

An even finish saw the
Gents seal a 17-13 win.

to hold off a strong fightback

Williams and co was
increased to 16-10 with six
ends to play.
Smith’s rink cut the
deficit down to just two
with three ends left but
could only reduce it by one
more shot in the final three
as the Gents held on to win
21-20.
