THIS weekend yet another 

type of late-night 

protection will descend 

on Stratford’s Greenhill 

Street as street marshals 

are introduced to the socalled 

“troublespot.” 

These ‘roving bouncers’ will 

be patrolling the road, which 

has two nightclubs and fastfood 

outlets on it, between 

midnight and 4am each Friday 

and Saturday night. 

Just 500ft long, the short street 

will now be monitored on the weekends 

by two marshals, the nightclubs’ 

doorstaff, Christian street 

pastors, the newly-reinstated 24/7 

CCTV system as well as police officers 

and police community support 

officesr. 

With so many different organisations 

patrolling the street, it could 

be the most densely monitored 

street of its length in Warwickshire. 

Yet one local policeman said 

what happens in Stratford is nothing 

compared to the night-time violence 

in Leamington, and late-night crime 

is lower in Stratford than other 

nearby towns. 

The new marshals have been paid 

for by Stratforward, the organisation 

that drives the Stratford Business 

Improvement District; the two 

nightclubs on the road, Maison and 

Chicago Rock; the Dolphin Fish 

Bar, which sells late-night food to 

clubbers, and Stratford District

Police hunt 

gang of 15 who 

attacked man 

POLICE are appealing for help in tracking down 

a gang of around 15 young people who launched 

an unprovoked attack that hospitalised an 18-yearold 

man in Warwick. 

The 18-year-old man was walking to his friends house 

alone when a mixed group of approximately 15 young 

people started following him. Several males from the 

group began to punch the man causing him to fall to the 

ground. Whilst on the ground the group continued to kick 

him to the head and body. 

The man suffered bruising and swelling to his face, ribs 

and arm requiring hospital treatment. 

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the assault that 

occurred in All Saints Road at around 6.45pm on 

Wednesday 21st March.

India to 

play for 

the queen 

STRATFORD teenager India Golding will be 

playing viola for the Queen in June as part of the 

diamond jubilee celebrations, reports Sandy Holt. 

The young musician, who is a pupil at Alcester 

Grammar School, was selected to play with the 

main National Children’s Orchestra (NCO) at the 

end of last year. Now she has been told that she will 

be playing with the orchestra in Westminster Hall 

in London. at the Queen’s diamond jubilee lunch 

on 5th June in front of 700 guests, including the 

Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and 

Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of 

Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales. 

India has played the viola for six years and this 

is the fifth year she has been invited to be part of 

the NCO. She said: “It’s the chance of a lifetime 

and the memory will be something to share with 

my grandchildren one day. I am so happy to be 

playing at such a prestigious event. I can’t wait to 

play for the Queen and all her family, especially 

Harry. It will be an incredible experience and such 

an honour.” 

The orchestra, all aged 14 years and under, will 

perform a programme of light classical music 

under the baton of its principal director of music, 

Roger Clarkson.

and kicked repeatedly in the 

face and stomach. 

On that occasion Chicago 

Rock doorstaff rushed to the 

scene and, after they were 

radioed by Mrs Roberts, 

police arrived within 15 or 

20 seconds. 

Last week another latenight 

fast-food chain—Big 

Bites—opened an outlet on 

the street, reaffirming 

Greenhill Street’s significance 

in Stratford’s latenight 

economy. 

On the impact the marshals 

will have, Mr Gregory 

said: “They’re not a magic 

wand, but they’re another 

tool.” 

Relations 

The nightclubs in Greenhill 

Street have been 

striving to improve relations 

with residents after complaints 

made against 

Chicago Rock saw its 

licence reviewed. 

Club representatives meet 

residents once a month to 

discuss problems on the 

street, and have contributed 

towards both the new marshals 

and the multi-agency 

event held on the street last 

month. 

Chicago Rock has 

appealed against Stratford 

District Council’s decision 

to slash its opening hours. 

The hearing, before magistrates 

in Leamington, will 

be on 28th and 29th May. 

Cable theft: 

suspect 

fined £50 

A STRATFORD man 

arrested on suspicion of cable 

thefts on the Honeybourne 

Line is having no further 

action taken against him. 

The 43-year-old was 

arrested by British Transport 

Police on 5th February 

after security patrols 

reported suspicious behaviour 

in the area. 

Although he was given a 

£50 fixed penalty notice for 

trespassing on the railway, 

no further action has been 

taken against him following 

the allegation of theft.

Challenge to cut 

the amount of 

plastic waste

STRATFORD’S PREMIER ENTERTAINMENT VENUE 

STRATFORD townspeople are being challenged to 

find out how much plastic they buy each week—and 

to see how much they can reduce their plastic waste. 

The opportunity comes Stratford members have 

with Transition Stratford’s already piloted the scheme.

is to see how we can cut out 

unnecessary plastic and 

reduce plastic waste.” 

The challenge fortnight 

will kick off on Friday 11th 

May with a showing of the 

BBC documentary Hawaii: 

Message in the Waves about 

the environmental damage 

caused by plastic in Hawaii. 

People taking the Challenge 

will then collect the

Homes plan is 

rejected on 

appeal 

A CLAVERDON businessman’s appeal against 

the rejection of his plans to relocate a large garden 

trade nursery to Shrewley has been dismissed. 

Alan Beaumont, of Greenfingers 

Nursery, received 

nearly 150 objections from 

locals when he applied to 

move his garden development 

to the green belt area 

near the Five Ways Road and 

Stoney Lane junction. 

Warwick District Council 

rejected his proposal last 

year, but Mr Beaumont 

appealed. 

At appeal hearing last 

month, resident flooded into 

Shrewley Village Hall to 

voice their concerns. 

Now planning inspector 

Paul Clark has agreed with 

the council’s rejection which 

stated the move would be 

“seriously detrimental to the 

open character of the green 

belt.” 

Susan Miles, who lives 

next to the site, described the 

decision as “such a relief.” 

Mr Beaumont’s plans to 

change the existing garden 

development in Kington 

Lane, Claverdon, to create 

nine, large detached houses 

has been withdrawn.

Henley 

Library 

reopens 

HENLEY Library is due to 

reopen today (Tuesday) 

staffed by volunteers who 

stepped in after the Warwickskhire 

County Council 

earmarked it for closure as 

part of its programme of 

spending cuts. 

Last week the volunteers 

were getting to grips with the 

library management system 

at training sessions in Stratford 

Library. 

As part of the ongoing 

support for community 

librarians, Warwickshire 

Library Service staff have 

been delivering the sessions. 

The first 12 of the 60 

library volunteers have been 

undergoing training sessions 

in the management of a 

library including checking 

stock in and out and strategies 

for displaying materials. 

The community library is 

housed in new premises at 

the Old Schoolroom in 

Henley Methodist Church. 

As the training was taking 

place, other volunteers 

worked with libraries staff to 

move the stock into its new 

home or laundered rugs, 

beanbags and toys. 

“Community support has 

been great,” said the secretary 

of Henley Community 

Library, Judith Lindley, 

about her fellow volunteers. 

“Refreshments at the official 

opening have been sponsored 

by contributions. 

Some supporters who are 

World Book Night givers 

will launch a drive to recruit 

members and volunteers at a 

Henley gastropub.” 

The community library is 

supported by the county 

council which will continue 

to loan stock from its library 

and information service and 

provide a dedicated helpline 

for volunteers to call for 

advice if required. 

The library will be open 

on Tuesdays, Fridays and 

Saturday mornings. 

Its official opening will be 

performed by Stratford MP 

Nadhim Zahawi at 10.30am 

on Friday 20th April. 

Stepping

LOCAL residents are being 

asked to put their running 

shoes, or walking boots, on 

for a four-mile fundraising 

fun run/walk at Walton Hall, 

near Wellesbourne, on 

Sunday 22nd April in aid of 

the charity Shipston Home 

Nursing. 

The charity has put 

together a route designed for 

all abilities through the 

grounds of the hall and into 

the estate village of Walton, 

a hidden gem where there 

hasn’t been any new 

building for over 100 years. 

All entrants will receive a 

free book, Walking in 

Walton, written by Lady 

Hamilton, and race T-shirts 

are available to purchase for 

£2 (first 100 entrants only). 

Hot-dogs will be available at 

the finish line and every participant 

will receive an 

achievement certificate. 

Entry is £5 for adults and 

£3.50 for children. Donations 

are also welcome.

Cub Scout groups free workshops 

to help members gain 

their animal care badge. 

Children in the area who 

attend the workshops at the 

store will receive advice 

from trained in-store advisers 

on how to care for pets 

responsibly. 

To obtain their Animal 

Friend Badge, Beaver Scouts 

will learn how to care for 

small animals and fish along 

with the correct type and 

quantities of food to feed

Man cleared of 

attacking barman 

over ID challenge 

A MAN has been cleared of assaulting a barman 

after losing his temper when he and three friends 

were asked for identification to prove their ages. 

Adam Edwards, aged 22, 

of Woodlands, Hockley 

Road, Hatton, near Warwick, 

had pleaded not guilty 

at Warwick Crown Court to 

assaulting Harry Parker 

causing him actual bodily 

harm. 

Prosecutor Ian Ball had 

alleged that Mr Edwards 

had injured Mr Parker by 

throwing a part-full glass of 

beer at him during an incident 

at the Railway Inn in 

Balsall Common in October 

2010. 

Lager 

Mr Parker was working 

behind the bar in the late 

afternoon when four young 

men, led by Mr Edwards, 

walked in and asked for four 

pints of Stella lager. 

The barman asked for 

identification which drew a 

response from Mr Edwards 

who demanded to know 

why he was being asked for 

ID 

Ẇhen Mr Parker said it 

was just his job, Mr 

Edwards retorted that it was 

his job to serve beer. 

“That was accompanied 

by a loss of temper by Adam 

Edwards who picked up the 

pint glass of another customer 

and threw it at Harry 

Parker,” alleged Mr Ball. 

“It hit his face, spilling 

beer over him and also 

causing a small cut under 

his eye, but the glass did not 

break,” the prosecutor told 

the jury. 

He said the incident was 

seen by Mr Parker’s father 

who was also in the pub, 

and he demanded to know 

why the glass had been 

thrown at his son. 

Mr Edwards and his 

friends then left and drove 

away in a silver Nissan 

Almera, but Mr Parker Sr 

made a note of its number 

which he passed to the 

police. 

As a result Mr Edwards 

was contacted and attended 

Solihull police station 

where he was arrested, said 

Mr Ball. 

Mr Edwards said he had 

gone to the pub with three 

friends for a quick pint, and 

he had got a bit wound up at 

being asked for identification, 

although he accepted

Stevenson victory 

WARWICK racing cyclist, John 

Stevenson, who rides for Team 

Jewson M I Racing, got his first win 

of the season after second and third 

placings in recent weeks. 

Stevenson’s win came at the Solihull-promoted 

Circuit Race, in the 

45+ event where he saw off the opposition 

for an easy win. 

Team-mate Phil Wilkins was 

second at the same meeting in the 50+ 

race, and another ex-professional, 

Derrick Woodings, won the 70+ race. 

Stevenson, who has won the 

season-long Percy Stallard National 

Road Race Series for the past three 

seasons, begins the defence of his 

title in Round 1 in the Newcastle RC 

promotion in North Staffordshire next 

weekend. 

Stevenson followed up his victory 

a few hours later, when he was part of 

Team Jewson’s 90-mile training session, 

which took riders out into the 

Cotswolds including several really 

tough climbs. 

Organiser and team director, Mick 

Ives, said: “With no local race on the 

Sunday, it was a good chance to get 

some tough miles in the legs, and 

enjoy some excellent weather as well. 

“I am sure riders will benefit from 

it, most of the riders are now clocking 

up, between 250 and 300 miles a 

week in training—ready for a heavy 

race programme in the next few 

months.” 

Wellesbourne’s Tim Stowe produced 

another excellent ride, when he 

finished second in the Gorrick Series 

Mountain Bike event at Bagshott in 

Surrey. 

Stowe is now leading the series by 

three points, with just one more event 

in the series. 

Weather 

brings good 

turnout 

A HIGH attendance of 

Octavian Droobers members 

in recent events was 

partly due to the good 

weather and as a build-up 

to the annual international 

orienteering fourday 

Easter Festival (the 

JK) which this year is 

taking place in Scotland. 

John Middler, organising 

his third event in 

three weeks, was pleased 

at the participation levels 

at Stoneleigh (90 competitors), 

and in particular 

the number 

of juniors 

who came along to take 

part in the club’s extra 

coaching and training run 

by Debbie Morse and the 

Emmerson family. 

On the short Orange 

course, 

Suzanne 

Humphries W45 was 1st 

in 14.37mins, and juniors 

Davina Mistry and 

Thomas Pegler were 2nd 

and 3rd in 19.43mins and 

20.53mins. 

On the Light Green 

Course, Dermot Lynch 

M40 was 1st in 36mins, 

John Ward M65 2nd in 

36.06mins and John 

Bowman M65 3rd in 


On the longer Green 

Course, Matthew Halliday 

M21 was 1st in 

25.13mins, 

Chris 

McCartney M40 2nd in 

27.13mins and Tom Jeffries 

M40 3rd in
