Worshippers give 

thanks for escape 

from falling tree

CHURCH-GOERS in Alveston had a 

lucky escape after a storm ripped up a 

huge willow tree and slammed it onto a 

very spot where the congregation normally 

gathers after Sunday morning service. 

The area where the tree crashed to the ground in 

Church Lane outside St James’ Church is also the 

parking area for a minibus which carries ten 

people to and from the church every Sunday. 

One neighbour living 

close to the church gates

reported hearing a “loud 

cracking sound” and dashed 

to her front door in time to 

see the tree complete it’s fall 

at 12.45pm. 

Although no one was 

injured at the scene, the 

churchwarden Rob Cobley 

believes everyone had a 

lucky escape and the situation 

could have been a lot 

more serious had the scheduled 

Sunday service not finished 

20 minutes earlier than 

usual. 

“We normally gather and 

have a chat in that very place 

just in front of the church

Householder 

punched by 

would-be burglar 

A MAN has been arrested for allegedly punching 

a Stratford householder several times in the face 

while he was attempting to commit a burglary. 

Following reports of a disturbance at a property in 

Mansell Street shortly after 8pm on Wednesday 25th 

April, police went to the scene and found that the householder 

had been assaulted after opening the door to a 

caller. 

The caller is believed to have forced his way into the 

property as the owner opened the door. Once inside he 

punched the householder a number of times in the face, 

causing facial injuries. 

Following the incident, police arrested a 44-year-old 

man at another address in Stratford late the same night. 

After being questioned on suspicion of committing aggravated 

burglary, he has been bailed until the middle of next 

month. 

RSC and BP 

unfazed by 

protests 

THE Royal Shakespeare Company continues to 

“respect people’s right to protest peacefully” on their 

stages after two protests in three nights took place in 

Stratford last week, writes Matt Wilson. 

Campaigners invaded the stage of the Royal Shakespeare 

Theatre, in Stratford, to highlight the RSC 

accepting sponsorship from BP for the World Shakespeare 

Festival. They asked audience members to rip 

out the BP logo from their programmes. When Jess 

Worth, one of the campaigners, was asked if they 

were planning any more protests she said: “Yes, but I 

am obviously not going to say when.” 

RSC artistic director Michael Boyd said: “From 

our earliest beginnings in the 1960s, we have encouraged 

open and creative expression amongst our 

artists, and I’m proud the RSC has been a place of 

experiment and occasional controversy.” And a 

spokesman for BP said: “We have no objection to 

peaceful protests to what the RSC are putting on.” 

Two people invaded The Tempest production on 

Monday night last week, and two more jumped on 

stage at Twelfth Night. One of them, Andrew Shilston, 

said: “Human lives, countless species and entire ecosystems 

are being systematically crushed by them. BP 

is leading the charge but attempting to hide behind a 

fig leaf of sponsorship.”

fair tapestry 

THIS year, the annual Wool Fair in Shipston offers 

visitors and townsfolk the opportunity to add a 

part of their own history to a modern-day tapestry. 

On Whit Sunday, 27th 

May, from 10am to 4pm, the 

market town will be celebrating 

the fourth Wool Fair, 

and inviting people to contribute 

to a tapestry of Shipston 

and the surrounding 

countryside, woven on a 

wooden loom. 

There will also be an 

exhibition of traditional 

sheep shearing, which will 

include a heated competition 

as people guess the 

length of time taken to shear 

each sheep. 

Weaving, spinning and 

felting experts will be 

showing off their talents and 

giving visitors the opportunity 

to learn these age-old 

crafts. 

The day’s entertainment 

will also be showcasing 

local community music, 

from morris dancing and 

gipsy dancing to busking 

slots, brass bands and jazz 

quartets. 

Also on show will be the 

Hook Norton Brewery 

heavy horses and some vintage 

tractors, plus children’s 

games, and some for the 

adults too. 

Visitors can also peruse 

the variety of stalls that will 

be set up around the market 

square, selling everything 

from local crafts, all things 

woolly, and much more 

besides. 

Shipston Wool Fair will 

be opened this year by Eric 

Wilson, the Master of the 

Worshipful Company of 

Woolmen, keen supporters 

of Shipston’s fair. The 

town’s lady town crier will 

be making sure everyone on

Revealed: the lamb 

curries that didn’t 

contain any lamb

CONSUMERS ordering lamb curries or lamb 

kebabs may not get what they expect a Warwickshire 

Trading Standards Service project has 

revealed. 

Trading standards officers 

visited 20 restaurants and 

takeaways, at random, in 

Stratford, Leamington, 

Nuneaton and Rugby and 

purchased 39 lamb curries 

and lamb kebabs. These 

were then tested to see what 

meat they actually contained 

and to check for high 

levels of artificial colours. 

Lamb is typically the most 

expensive meat consumers 

can buy, followed by beef 

and pork with chicken being 

the cheapest. Officers 

wanted to check that consumers 

were getting what 

they expected—and paid for. 

Incredibly, none of the 20 

lamb kebabs sampled contained 

just lamb. They all 

contained a mixture of lamb 

together with either pork, 

beef or poultry. 

Trading standards officers 

understand that some 

restaurants may be knowingly 

using chicken in their 

lamb kebabs as it helps to 

ensure the meat sticks 

together around the skewer 

during cooking. 

Of the 19 lamb curries 

tested, only three contained 

just lamb. Again, most contained 

a mixture of lamb 

together with either beef or 

poultry (chicken). Four 

didn’t contain any lamb at 

all! 

The foods were also 

checked for high levels of 

artificial colourings. Adults 

can be adversely affected by 

artificial colours, and in children 

trigger hyperactivity. 

Although none of the curries 

were found to contain 

high levels of colours, 70 

per cent of the kebabs tested 

did. One contained levels of 

artificial colouring that were 

18 times higher than permitted, 

another was 13 

times higher. This may be 

due to human error in preparation 

of the marinades used 

by the restaurants and takeaways 

to give the kebab 

colour. 

Warwickshire Trading 

Standards will now be contacting 

every restaurant and 

takeaway involved. Further 

investigations are to be carried 

out and advice will be 

provided to retailers and the 

wholesale trade.

Lorry driver three 

times over the limit 

WHEN police breathalysed a lorry driver after a 

motorist had seen him weaving across the A46 in 

South Warwickshire he was more than three times 

the legal limit. 

But at Warwick Crown 

Court Julius Kancauskas 

pleaded guilty to dangerous 

driving but not guilty to 

driving his articulated lorry 

on the A46 having consumed 

excess alcohol. 

Nicholas Aldridge, 

defending, said Kancauskas 

accepted that his driving on 

18th September last year 

fell far below the normal 

standard of driving. 

He accepted his articulated 

lorry was swerving 

across the road, knocked 

over traffic bollards and 

went onto the offside of the 

road in the face of 

oncoming vehicles, forcing 

those drivers to take 

avoiding action. 

But in relation to the 

breath test reading of 124 

compared to the legal 

alcohol limit of 35, prosecutor 

Gareth Walters said it 

was a question of whether 

Kancauskas had had a drink 

after he had pulled up. 

Mr Walters pointed out 

that Kancauskas was being 

followed along the A46 by a 

woman who was so concerned 

about his driving that 

she called the police and 

gave them a running commentary.

As he pulled into a lay-by 

near Oversley a police car 

was coming in the opposite 

direction, so turned round 

and pulled in behind the 

artic. 

“On the evidence there is 

about a two minute gap 

between him pulling over 

and the officers going up to 

him and him saying he has 

managed to drink a half-litre 

bottle of vodka,” observed 

Mr Walters. 

Normally an excess 

alcohol charge would have 

to be remitted to be tried in 

the magistrates court. 

But Mr Walters suggested 

that, because the allegation 

was so closely linked 

to the dangerous driving, it 

should be heard at the 

crown court by a judge sitting 

as a district judge. 

That was agreed by Judge 

Marten Coates, so the 

excess alcohol case was 

adjourned for trial and Kancauskas, 

aged 54, of Seabank 

Way, Kings Lynn, was 

granted bail.

‘Lucky to 

be alive’ 

after crash 

A MAN and a woman were “lucky not to be killed” 

when their car was left smashed up after it careered 

off a 70mph motorway and crashed into trees in 

Warwickshire in the early hours of Saturday. 

The crash occurred on the 

M40 south bound, between 

junctions 12 and 11, at 

around 1.50am. 

A West Midlands Ambulance 

Service spokesman 

said: “Considering the substantial 

damage to the 

vehicle, the occupants were 

fortunate not to have suffered 

more serious or even 

fatal injuries.” 

Embankment 

Ambulance crews arrived 

to find a car that had left the 

motorway, travelled down 

an embankment and hit a 

number of trees. 

The passenger in the car, 

a woman believed to be in 

her mid 30s, suffered neck,

found two cars that had 

been in collision. The first 

car was carrying a single 

occupant at the time of the 

incident. 

“The woman believed to 

be in her 20s, was treated at 

the scene for arm injuries

woman was fully immobilised 

and airlifted to University 

Hospital of Coventry 

and Warwickshire. 

“The second vehicle was 

carrying five occupants at 

the time of the incident; two 

adults, one man and one

“All five occupants were 

treated for minor injuries at 

the scene before being conveyed 

to Warwick Hospital 

for further assessment and 

treatment. 

“Due to the nature of the 

incident, the man who was 

the driver of the vehicle was 

fully immobilised as a precaution.”

There are four main groups of plants which go 

into the water and there are also bog garden 

plants planted outside the pond in a very moist 

area to attract wildlife. 

The first type is deep water plants, such as lilies or 

water hawthorns, which provide important surface 

cover once established and look very pretty. 

Then there are oxygenating plants – very important 

for the pool. Some can be thrown in loose 

and others are planted in pots. These provide 

valuable oxygen to the pool. 

The third type is marginal plants, which sit on the 

pool shelves. They provide cover for livestock, 

assist the water quality and make the pool look 

beautiful. There are numerous varieties available, 

amongst which are many native ones.

and Red Hill, west of Stratford upon Avon in the County of

the A46 from its roundabout junction with the A422 (Shottery 

Roundabout) its junction with the entrance to the Stag Hotel at Red Hill;

(i) above when signs indicating “convoy working” are displayed; and 

(iii) close the length of A46 described in (i) above; and

expected to start on Monday 28 May 2012 and last for four days. The

semi-finals of the Stratford Alliance RM Smith Cup after a 

7-3 victory against Hayes Harriers on Saturday. Goals 

came from Nick Dance (2), Ben Pattison, Matt Chappio, 

Dan Mumford, Jamie Gifford and Adam Stobinski.

Droobers prominent in 

England triumph 

ENGLAND won the six-sided North European Orienteering 

Competition staged at Habay-la-Neuve in the Belgian 

Ardennes where Octavian Droobers members made a 

valuable contribution to the overall victory and to winning 

the junior trophy. 

Amy Sarkies organised an excellent local event at Draycote 

Water, near Rugby, which attracted several newcomers 

to the sport. The short course was won by first-timer Jack 

Clarke M18 from King Henry VIII School Coventry in 

15.16mins. 

Bill Nicolson M45 was 1st on the Medium course in 

17.03mins, Suzanne Humphries W45 2nd in 18.13mins 

and Margaret Willdig W55 3rd in 20.54mins. On the Long 

course, John Embrey M50 from Harlequins was 1st in 

23.53mins, Chris McCartney M40 2nd in 23.55mins and 

Bob Brandon M60 3rd in 30.19mins. 

Tomorrow (Wednesday), Octavian Droobers will be 

staging an event at Warwick University Campus. Start

League Sixth Division was

but all scheduled fixtures 

were washed out. 

Weather permitting, the 

Cotswold Hills League has 

a full programme this 

coming weekend with all 

seven divisions beginning

Town finish

campaign with a 2-1 victory at Boldmere St Michaels on Saturday.

the previous season 

on a high. 

“But that has taught me a 

lot. It is said that you learn 

more from losing than winning 

and I’m determined to 

make the necessary 

changes so that we can be 

ready for the challenge of 

the next campaign.”

MFA season in style after 

thrashing visiting Heath
