A WOMAN pedestrian
was killed in a collision
with a car near the MoD
Kineton army base on
Saturday night, reports
Matt Wilson.
The woman was
declared dead at the scene
after she was hit by a
silver Skoda Octavia
travelling towards Banbury
on the B4100. A
second car, a red Ford
Ka, was travelling in the
opposite direction but
was not directly involved
in the incident.
Any witnesses who saw
the crash, the woman, or
either vehicle before the
collision occurred is
asked to call PC Geoff
Bell on 01926 414415.
The name of the woman
who died will not be
released until the formal
identification process has
been completed and all
close relatives have been
informed.

VANDALS desecrated a memorial bench and torched a sports
pavilion on a rampage through Snitterfield on Friday night.
The bench, in memory of 28-year-old Lance Corporal
Paul Muirhead of Bearley, killed in
Afghanistan in 2006, was taken from the Snitterfield
Arms, carried through the village and then dumped.
On the same night, an act
of “mindless arson” at the
sports club pavilion on
Wolverton Road did up to
£10,000 worth of damage.
Villager Fiona Booth, who
said that Paul was “like a
brother to her,” recovered the
bench on Sunday after a villager
spotted it dumped

“It is just shocking,” she
said. “ What’s the mentality?
It has to be someone from
around here, because only
someone in the village would
know that area.”
The bench was chained to
the floor at the Snitterfield
Arms, which closed its doors
last Thursday, but the callous
vandals snapped part of it
before carrying it off.
When she realised it was
missing, Fiona phoned Paul’s
mum, Violet Clayton, to see
if she had taken it. “It is just
such a shame I had to call her
and ask her that,” she said.
At 10pm on Friday night,
two fire engines from Stratford
rushed to the green
wooden cricket pavilion to
put out a fire started in the
home changing room.
There was extensive
smoke damage to the walls
and ceilings, and some of the
electrics and lights were
melted.
Lee Hillier, chairman of
Snitterfield Cricket Club,
said: “Luckily, it was not
actually burnt to the ground,
but all the rooms were full of
smoke. We went in afterwards,
had a look around,
and it looks like it was
youngsters who broke the

small window at the back.
“They started a couple of
fires on the floor using the
umpires coats and a cricket
helmet.”
The pavilion, which is
used by both the cricket club,
and the football club and
their youth teams, is now
unusable. It is owned by Snitterfield
Parish Council, who
yesterday (Monday) confirmed
they were putting in
an insurance claim.
Mr Hillier said: “Everything
is thick with smoke
damage, the roof and the
walls are blackened, lights
and electrics are melted.”
The cricket club are now
praying they can replace the
walls and ceiling by the start
of the season in April, but the
football team were not so
lucky.

to help the spread of rabies.

Although the UK is rabies
free, some Eastern European
countries such as the
Ukraine and Romania continue
to have problems with
the disease.
Trading officers say that
anyone planning to buy a cat
or dog should follow this
advice:
●Buy your animal from a
reputable supplier. Advice is
available from organisations
such as the RSPCA.
●Check the animal’s history
by speaking to a previous
owner. If you are
buying a puppy or kitten,
you should ask to see it with
its mother and the rest of the
litter.
●View the animal and its
documentation before you
buy. If it was born outside of
the UK it must have either a
pet passport or a veterinary
certificate.
The pet passport needs to
confirm that it was vaccinated
against rabies at the
correct age (dated),
according to the manufacturer’s
data sheet, normally
at three months of age. There
should also be a micro-chip
number and if it is a dog the
date of worming.
●If you have any doubts
about an animal speak to
your vet before agreeing to
buy it.
If your new pet is found to
be illegally imported and
non-compliant with disease
control rules, then you may
find yourself having to pay
for costly quarantine and veterinary
bills.

Search for
castle eagle
called off
THE eagle that went
missing from Warwick
Castle is being left to fend
in the wild after handlers
decided to call off the
search.
Stan, the ten-year-old sea
eagle who has a wingspan
over 6ft, flew off during a
show at the castle in September.
He was spotted several
times in the area over the
next few weeks, feeding on
rabbits. However, after
many attempts to recapture
him proved fruitless, the falconers
have now decided to
give up the search. He had
been at the castle for more
than eight years.

Concern for missing man
POLICE are becoming increasingly
concerned for the welfare of
a 38-year-old Warwick man who
has not been seen since New Year’s
Day.
Bernard Tandi, of Portobello
Way in Warwick, was reported
missing on 3rd January 2013,
after he was last seen at his home
address at about 6pm. Since then
he has failed to visit his place of
work or make contact with any
family or friends.
Mr Tandi’s family are becoming
increasingly concerned for his
well-being and are anxious to
learn of his safety and whereabouts
as his disappearance is
completely out of character.
He is described as an African
man, 5ft 9ins tall, medium build
with black short hair and brown
eyes. It is not known what clothing
he could be wearing but he usually
wears jeans and he is a smoker.
Anyone with information should
call Warwickshire Police on 101.

MORE than £400,000 of compensation has been
paid out after dozens of cases of neglect at the
Alexandra Hospital, in Redditch, over the past
decade.
Health Secretary Jeremy
Hunt, said he was “disgusted
and appalled” at the
way elderly patients were
treated at the hospital.
A total of 35 cases were
brought against Worcestershire
Acute NHS Hospital
Trust over severe cases of
neglect between 2002-2011,
including one which led to a
patient dying of starvation.
The 84-year-old man died
in 2009, two months after
being admitted to the hospital
after a fall.
Emma Jones, the lawyer
representing the patients
and their families, said it
was the first time in her
career she had come across
starvation being given as
the primary cause of death.
Other patients were also
left thirsty with drinks out
of reach, and some were left
to lie in their own excrement.
After a damning report by
the Care Quality Commission
questioned the hospital’s
care for the elderly,
lawyers representing 38
patients or their families
brought a class action

against the trust.
The trust, which accepted
care was below standard,
was forced to pay out a total
of £410,000 worth of compensation.
Mr Hunt said: “I am disgusted
and appalled to read
these accounts of what
patients and their relatives
went through.
“These are examples of
the sort of 'care' that should
simply not happen in the
NHS and there is no excuse
for them.
“We will be keeping a
careful eye on this situation,
and will take further action
if necessary.”

Hospitals Trust were ten per
cent higher than the national
average.
The trust said some of the
very serious allegations
were not borne out by the
medical notes, but admitted
certain aspects of care fell

leading up to Christmas.
The sum of £73 was presented
to Acorns Children's
Hospice for remembrance
tree stars that were hung
from a tree in the funeral
home in memory of a loved
one who had passed away.
£1 was pledged by the
funeral home for each star
hung on the tree and some
donations were received
with the stars.

to the Shakespeare
Hospice from the sale of

funeral home and local

Arrested
in drugs
raid
A DRUGS raid on a property
in Stratford last Friday,
led to the arrest of a woman.
Police seized an amount
of what they believe to
Class A drugs from inside
the property in Drayton
Avenue on 28th December
and arrested the woman on
suspicion of possession of a
Class A substance with
intent to supply.
They raided the property
at around 2pm and left the
scene at 4.30pm.
The woman was then
taken to Leamington Police
Station to be interviewed.
Sgt Richard Thomas told
the Midweek Herald that
she had been placed on
police bail pending for further
investigations, and she
will answer her bail in early
February.

weekend after residents raised fears over their safety.

not to allow them to fall in to the
hands of unscrupulous scrap

THE owners of a popular 1940s tearoom in Stratford,
plan to relocate to a larger premises in the
town centre around Easter.
The Fourteas, in Union
Street, is run by husband and
wife Ian and Rachael Barber,
who met while stage managing
shows for the Royal
Shakespeare Company.
In June, their lease runs
out at the current premises.
The tearoom will be re-sited
to the Grade II doublefronted
former Locke and
England estate agents
building, in Sheep Street,
around April or May.
Mrs Barber has submitted
a change of use planning
application to convert the
building from a shop into a
restaurant, and has also
applied for listing building
you’re no longer responsible for
the vehicle. If you don’t get this
letter within four weeks, call
DVLA.
If your insurance company
decides to write off your vehicle,
you’ll need to hand the vehicle
over to them to dispose of. This
means you will need to complete
the V5C/3 ‘Notification of sale or
transfer’ section of your registration
certificate and send it to
DVLA and give the rest of the registration
certificate to your insurance
company.
The DVLA will fine owners of
vehicles not displaying a valid tax
licence. They can face an automatic
penalty of £80 plus a fine of
up to £1,000.

Finally brought before the
court, McAllister, 50, of
Floyer Road, Small Heath,
Birmingham, pleaded not
guilty to two charges of
assaulting his former partner
Wenda Allen.
McAllister also denied
breaching a restraining order
made by Birmingham magistrates,
under which he was
banned from having any contact
with Ms Allen. It is
alleged he breached the order
on the occasions he is
accused of assaulting her and
by turning up outside her
home .
Judge Marten Coates
rejected an application for
McAllister, to be granted
bail.
He adjourned the case for
trial, and remanded McAllister
in custody until then.

owl is new
attraction
WALTER, the Owl, has become the
new attraction at Hatton Farm Village
after being rescued from starvationr.
Walter, a great grey owl, was
found starving to death along with
40 other owls in an owl sanctuary in
Cumbria. He was then taken in by
Arden Falconry at Hatton Farm
Village who nursed him back to
health.
Arden Falconry partner Danielle
Shearsby, from Leamington, drove
up to collect him. “When I got there
he was in a desperate state with no
wing or tail feathers left,” she said.
“He had managed to put some
weight on at the prison but was far
from well. Obviously in this state he
couldn’t fly and had sores on the
bones of his wings where he had
tried to pull himself up onto
perches,” she said.
“We brought him back to Hatton
and started to feed him up. He was
very nervous and struggled to
settle. During the winter of 2011 we
brought him into the office to be
warm and he sat with us not
making any noise. Soon he started
to put weight on.
“In April with the warmer
weather we moved him outside to
one of the aviaries—he still couldn’t
fly so we fitted it with two small
perches, one to put him on in the

sunshine and one so that he could
get out of the rain. In November we
started to see an improvement and
his wing and tail feathers started to
grow back. We worked on keeping
him wel fed and in December we
moved him to a bigger aviary where
he started to fly up to higher
perches.
“Now, in January, we are hopeful
that he is close to being able to fly
and to take part in our demonstrations.
“He is a lovely, well natured owl
who has been through a horrible
ordeal. He seems to like his new
home and being with people.”
The great grey owls are native to
North America and other northern
countries around the globe and can
live for up to 40 years.
“We have no idea of his age
because we don’t know his history;
all we can say is that he’s not a
youngster,” said Danielle.
Farm village manager Richard
Craddock said: “It’s a lovely success
story for us. I’m delighted with
the work that Danielle and her
team have done with him and they
can be proud that they have saved
Walter’s life.”
School’s 50th anniversary celebrations
THIS year St Benedict’s RC High
School, in Alcester, is inviting thousands
of ex-pupils to attend the
school’s 50th anniversary party—its
biggest reunion ever.

event to be held at the school in Kinwarton
Road on Saturday 4th May.
The race is now on to see which of
those 50 school years will attract the

Power cuts hit
town centre
TWO power cuts hit Stratford on Wednesday
afternoon last week leaving over 500 customers,
including many shops, without power.
At 3.30pm, 570 customers lost power according to
providers, Western Power Distribution. Just moments after
the problem was fixed, the power cut out again.
A Western Power Distribution spokesperson said: “The
majority of customers were all back on within the hour but
a couple of moments after that they had a further problem
and a number of customers would have been affected
again.”
The second power cut struck 530 customers, although
Western Power said three-quarters of those affected were
back on by 5pm.
On Thursday, a spokesperson confirmed that the cuts
were a result of a fault in an underground cable and were
not caused by any digging.

for Mark at
slimming awards
REALITY TV star Mark Wright, who shot to fame on The
Only Way Is Essex, hosted Slimming World’s annual awards
ceremony, in Birmingham, to celebrate its most successful
slimmers.
Stratford Slimming World consultants Bee Meyers,
Lorna Bowden, Rachael Perks, Zoe Almond and Sarah
Hall, who run weekly groups in the town, were thrilled to get
the chance to pose with Mark for the photograph on the left.
Bee said later that meeting Mark was the perfect ending
to a great year for Slimming World. The club now helps
more than a million people every year to lose weight and
lead healthier, happier lives at one of its 9,500 weekly sessions.
“But there’s still a lot of work to be done,” she said. “With
one of the highest levels of obesity in Europe right here in
the UK, we want to help even more people to slim down and
improve their health starting this January. At this time of
year lots of people will be making New Year’s resolutions
and pledging to lose weight, and we’d love anyone who

Plan for a 24-berth
marina at Barton
PLANS to turn a meadow near Bidford into a 24-berth mooring basin, have
been supported by Bidford Parish Council.
Members of the council have supported
the application at Avon Farm, in Welford
Road, Barton, on the grounds that it will
benefit local business by attracting more
tourism to the area and potentially create
more local jobs.
Peter Scully has submitted the application
to Stratford District Council, which
will also include a new vehicle access and
15 car parking spaces.
In the planning statement, his agent Neil
Healey, says that the proposal will be beneficial
to users of the River Avon, encouraging
use of the navigable waterway, in
accordance with the guidelines of the local
planning authority (LPA) whose policy is to
encourage water based recreation within
the district.
The report says: “Water based recreation
makes a considerable contribution to the

local economy. It will also provide much
needed additional mooring space as recognised
by the LPA.”
The marina will be used for private boat
users and not public users. The proposed
development, while not increasing employment
on site, will encourage additional use
of local businesses associated with the
leisure industry.

increase to flood risk as a result of the
development.
The target date for determination by the
district council is on Monday 21st January.

Prius is best-selling
plug-in hybrid in the UK
SALES figures announced yesterday
(Monday) confirmed the Prius Plug-in as
the best-selling plug-in hybrid in the UK.
The car achieved 470 sales from its
launch date in July 2012, outselling its
nearest rival, Vauxhall Ampera, despite it
being on sale since April, three months
longer than the Toyota.
This result is just part of a strong year for
Toyota hybrid sales. Overall, the brand sold
12,840 hybrid vehicles, an increase of 15.2
per cent compared to 2011.
In 2012, its hybrid range expanded from
two to five vehicles: Yaris Hybrid, sevenseat
Prius+ and Prius Plug-in were added to
the existing Prius and Auris Hybrid. New
Auris Hybrid, launched in December, is the
latest model to feature a full hybrid powertrain,
returning fuel economy of 76.3mpg
and CO2 emissions of 87g/km.

Call for full co-operation to
achieve full e-mobility
ELECTRIC vehicles have the potential to play a key role in
ensuring sustainable mobility for the future. However the European
Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) cautions
that under the current conditions it is unlikely that this full
potential can be met.
This is partly due to the current economic situation, with
declining sales of vehicles, says the ACEA. However it is to a
large extent also due to slow progress in charging standards, the
fragmentation of internal market as a result of uncoordinated
approach to market incentives, a lack of dedicated support for
R&D, and no clear and unified vision on infrastructure.
“E-mobility can be part of a long-term solution to our
mobility challenges. However, we need to have the right framework
conditions if it is to really take off,” said Ivan Hodac,
ACEA secretary general. “It will only be possible to book real
progress if there is full co-operation between utility providers,
infrastructure companies, the energy sector, standardisation
bodies and the automotive industry—with the full support of
national governments and the European institutions.”

product in this market.
The Land Rover Discovery
continued to sell well
with sales up 7.4 per cent
and the brand’s flagship
product, the Range Rover,
posted an excellent performance
for its run out year by
retailing almost 4,000 units.

Official figures just
released show that MG is
the fastest growing British
brand in the UK, and the
story of the revival of the
world-famous MG octagon
will be given a major boost
in 2013.
Just as the old year ticked
away, MG introduced DTi-
TECH diesel versions of the
award-winning MG6 GT
and MG6 Magnette to join
the petrol models. In 2013
an all-new model, the
Fiesta-sized MG3 will start
coming off the final
assembly line at the MG
Birmingham factory.
Last year was a record for
MG with more cars sold in
the UK than in 2010 and
2011 combined. It was the
best year for MG sales in
Britain since 2006.
Figures released yesterday
(Monday) by the
Society of Motor Manufacturers
and Traders (SMMT)
show that MG sales grew by
a staggering 117 per cent in
2012, making MG the
fastest growing British automotive
brand in the UK.
Eight new MG dealerships
opened in 2012 and
the network will grow again
this year to support the
expanding range of new
models available in the UK
market.
World-wide the MG
brand is growing at a faster
rate than any time in its 89-
year history.

(12) (i) Every endeavour will be made to
forward replies to box numbers to
the advertiser as soon as possible
after receipt by the publisher, but the
publisher accepts no liability in
respect of any loss or damage
alleged to have arisen through delay
in forwarding or omitting to forward
such replies (howsoever caused). The
advertiser authorises the publisher to
return to its originator any
communication which, in the opinion
of the publisher, should not be
delivered to the advertiser.

were edged out 15-13 in a close encounter
at Banbury while struggling Southam
crashed 51-26 at Old Coventrians in Midlands
3 West (South).
Harbury continued their fine season in
Midlands 4 West (South) with a 41-5 success
at basement boys Keresley.
Elsewhere in the division, Claverdon
went down 47-19 at home to leaders Old
Yardleians and Warwickian lost 41-5 at
Birmingham Civil Service. Alcester’s game
at Atherstone was postponed.
