STRATFORD musician James Righton and his 

fiancée, Hollywood star Keira Knightley, are 

described as being “over the moon” after their 

engagement was revealed over the weekend. 

The couple have been dating for the past 15 months but 

have kept their relationship low-key despite constant media 

attention. 

“They’re a truly lovely couple 

and as you can imagine they’re 

over the moon with this news. You 

can tell with some people if they’re 

made for each other and these two 

definitely are,” said James’s father, 

Nick Righton, who lives in Stratford. 

“I would say that despite all the 

glamour around them they are a 

couple in their late 20s who 

treasure traditional family values. 

Keira has stayed here in Stratford 

and we all get along fine. It’s like 

one big happy family, and I’m 

delighted for them.” 

Nick said he found out about the 

couple’s news a week or so ago but 

had to keep the information close 

to his chest and not tell a soul. He 

could not confirm when James proposed 

to Keira but did say the location 

was a very beautiful city 

somewhere in Europe. 

“I’ve not heard anything about 

wedding dates or where the wedding 

will take place. Keira is 

filming in New York soon and 

James is busy in the studio finishing 

off The Klaxons latest album 

which is 90 per cent done, so we’ll 

have to wait and see on that one,”

have been spotted together casually 

on a number of occasions, 

including a visit to the Old Thatch 

Tavern, in Stratford, for a quiet 

drink last Christmas. 

James, keyboard player for indie 

rock band Klaxons, grew up in 

Stratford and met fellow band 

member Simon Taylor-Davis while 

they were pupils at Stratford High 

School. They and friend Jamie 

Reynolds formed Klaxons in 

London in 2005. 

Keyboardist Righton won the 

Mercury Prize in 2007 with his 

band’s debut album Myths Of The 

Near Future. Knightley has 

appeared in a string of Hollywood 

blockbusters”z, including Pirates 

of the Caribbean, Atonement, Pride 

and Prejudice and The Duchess, 

and is rumoured to be the one of the 

world’s highest paid actresses. 

“I can confirm that Keira is 

engaged to be married to James 

Righton. We are not discussing any 

further details,” a spokesperson for 

Ms Knightley said.

Accused of trying 

to murder PC 

A MAN has been charged with the attempted murder of a 

police officer after an incident in a village near Wellesbourne. 

Marijus Kaminskis, aged 23, from Porchester Street, in 

Birmingham, is said to have assaulted the officer in Newbold 

Pacey. A spokesperson for Warwickshire Police confirmed 

yesterday (Monday) that a weapon was not 

involved. 

The officer was in the area after someone had phoned 

the police because they were concerned for another 

member of the public. Following the incident, the officer 

received medical treatment and has since made enough of 

a recovery to return to duty. 

Mr Kaminskis appeared before magistrates in Leamington 

on Friday. He was remanded in custody until his 

appearance at Warwick Crown Court on 5th September. 

Cyclist badly 

hurt in 4x4 

collision 

A CYCLIST suffered life-threatening injuries in a 

collision with a 4x4 vehicle in Warwickshire on Saturday 

morning. 

The man, believed to be in his late 30s, suffered 

serious head, chest, pelvic and leg injuries, and had

to be airlifted to hospital. Yesterday (Monday), police 

said he was in a “critical but stable” condition. 

The collision occurred on the A4189, between 

Henley and Warwick at around 9.35am. The cyclist 

received extensive emergency treatment at the scene 

and was immobilised with a neck collar and spinal 

board. 

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman 

said: “The man was airlifted to University Hospital 

Coventry and Warwickshire for further emergency 

treatment. The hospital had been alerted to the 

man’s arrival and his serious injuries. Unfortunately, 

his injuries were considered life-threatening.”

Summit to 

gather views 

of patients 

PATIENTS from across South Warwickshire met 

last week at the very first Patient Summit hosted 

by South Warwickshire Clinical Commissioning 

Group (CCG). 

The CCG is preparing to 

take on responsibility for 

commissioning health 

services to its local population 

and the meeting was 

called to gather the views 

and opinions of the people 

it will be serving and create 

the South Warwickshire 

Patient Participation 

Group. 

CCG chair David 

Spraggett said: “It is 

absolutely vital to us that 

patients and the public are 

involved at this early stage 

as we plan and develop our 

commissioning strategy. I 

was impressed with the real 

enthusiasm in the room at 

the Summit for patients to 

be involved and work with 

us to improve services.

our population thinks about 

their health services, what 

we’re getting right and 

what’s not working so well 

and these are questions we 

asked at the summit and 

will be continually asking 

patients as we move forward.”

Volunteers’ woodchip day of action 

OVER a mile of the woodland walk 

at the family home of Anne Hathaway 

in Shottery has been re-covered 

with recycled woodchip by 

members of Sita UK’s human 

resources team as part of a voluntary 

day of action. 

The work was carried out as part 

of the nationwide Give and Gain 

Day which aims to promote “giving 

something back.” More than 12 

members of staff volunteered on the 

project over eight hours, which 

involved recovering a mile of the 

woodland walk around the family 

home. 

Eighteen tonnes of the woodchip 

was donated by the recycling and 

resource management company’s 

facility in Birmingham. 

Claire Townsend, Sita UK’s 

human resources officer, said: “This 

is the second time we have taken 

part in the Give and Gain Day and 

it’s really rewarding to see how 

thousands of visitors every year to 

Anne Hathaway’s Cottage will benefit 

from walking on the woodland 

walk, which we laid over a gruelling 

eight hours."” 

Over 60 rafts expected 

to race on the Avon 

THE organisers of the annual Wasperton to Stratford 

raft race are expecting more than 60 rafts to 

take part. 

Race committee chairman

the last five years.” 

The race, on Sunday 17th 

June, organised by Wellesbourne

Perjury charges: 

sentence delayed

THE sentencing of two men—one of them formerly 

from Warwick— who lied in the High Court 

over the involvement of one of them in two insurance 

firms he owned has been delayed. 

But Jayson Hollier and 

Andrew Booth will not face 

confiscation hearings over 

their dishonest dealings 

because they are both bankrupt, 

Warwick Crown Court 

has heard. 

Hollier and accountant 

Booth had been due to be 

sentenced at the court after 

a jury found them both 

guilty earlier this year of 

two charges of perjury. 

At the end of the 13-week 

trial in March Hollier, 39, 

of Emscote Road, Warwick, 

at the time he was charged, 

was also convicted of a 

charge of fraudulent trading. 

That related to his running 

of a company called 

Bentley Group Ltd, which 

was used to disguise his 

involvement in two other 

companies, and Booth, 59, 

of Colton Street, Leicester, 

was also convicted of that 

charge. 

Booth was also found 

guilty of fraudulent trading 

in respect of insurance brokers 

Shakespeare Underwriting 

Ltd and the theft of 

£45,000 from that company’s 

bank account. 

But both men were 

cleared of a similar alleged 

fraudulent trading relating 

to CIA Insurance Services 

Ltd. 

The two men had been 

due to be sentenced following 

an adjournment for 

pre-sentence reports to be 

prepared on them, and for a 

psychiatric report on Hollier. 

But Hollier’s barrister 

Bart Casella said that 

because he had moved to 

live with his brother in 

Birmingham, there was a 

delay in a psychiatric 

appointment being made for 

him. 

That arose because his 

new GP would not refer him 

until he had received his 

medical records from his 

previous doctor, so there 

was still no psychiatric 

report. 

Before adjourning the 

hearing again until July, 

Judge Amjad Nawaz, who 

granted both men bail, 

pointed out that because 

they were bankrupt, the 

Crown Prosecution Service 

would not be seeking confiscation 

orders against 

them under the Proceeds of 

Crime Act.

A WARWICK man who took part in a burglary in 

which a man was attacked when intruders burst 

into his home was caught after dropping his 

partner’s mobile phone. 

And at Warwick Crown 

Court Sonny Fletcher, aged 

32, of Lyttleton Road, was 

jailed for two-and-a-half 

years after pleading guilty 

to the burglary. 

Prosecutor Neil Bannister 

said that during the afternoon 

on December 13 last 

year Fletcher and another 

man went to a house in 

Clare Close, Lillington. 

They began kicking at the 

door, and when the householder 

opened the door they 

burst inside. 

The occupier was 

attacked, but Fletcher 

entered his plea on the basis 

that he had not been 

involved in any of the violence, 

which Mr Bannister 

said was accepted. 

Fletcher said he had 

unplugged a Playstation 

console and taken it from

Mr Bannister said 

Fletcher was arrested after 

he dropped a phone in the 

house which was traced to 

his partner who said he had 

it at the time. 

When he was arrested 

Fletcher, who had a large 

number of previous convictions, 

mainly for theft, 

denied taking part in the 

burglary but was identified 

by the victim.

habit of using class 

A drugs since the age of 15, 

but while remanded in custody 

had undertaken a detox 

programme. 

He was also drinking 

heavily after he and his 

wife, who was also an 

addict, split up last year 

and, because she could not 

cope, their children were 

taken into care. 

“He entered and 

unplugged the Playstation 

and left. He was not 

involved in any of the violence,” 

she added. 

Jailing Fletcher, Judge 

Marten Coates told him: 

“You are too familiar a visitor 

to these courts. Since 

1997 you have been before 

the court for 75 different 

offences, including one for 

a dwelling house burglary a 

long time ago. 

“I haven’t been told why 

this particular house was 

targeted on that day, but it 

was a serious burglary 

because it was occupied at 

the time and the occupier 

was disturbed and violence 

was used on him.”

Four arrested 

after raid on store 

FOUR young men from Warwick were arrested last Tuesday on suspicion of 

assaulting a shopkeeper while they tried to steal alcohol from a shop in

Police were called to an 

incident at Johnny’s Supermarket 

in Shrubland Street at 

10.50pm. 

Officers believe a woman 

may have intervened when 

the incident spilled out into 

the street disturbing the men 

who then left with a small 

quantity of wine and beer. 

Police are keen to trace 

this woman who had driven 

off before officers arrived. 

Shortly after the incident 

occurred officers stopped a 

vehicle near Junction 14 of 

the M40 and arrested the 

four male occupants—two 

aged 17, one aged 21 and 

one aged 23— on suspicion 

of the assault. 

The male shopkeeper was 

taken by ambulance to Warwick 

Hospital for assessment 

and treatment. He suffered 

from initial shock and cuts 

and bruises and has been discharged.

Aqueduct and 

locks get historic 

recognition 

THE historical importance of a number of 

Britain’s most significant canal structures and 

landmarks was formally recognised yesterday 

(Monday) with a ceremony at Hatton Lock Flight 

on the Grand Union Canal. 

Unveiled by the Transport 

Trust, the ‘Red Wheel’ 

plaques mark the important 

role of Britain’s inland 

waterways in the development 

of transport and the 

Industrial Revolution. 

The formal unveiling at 

Hatton Locks commemorates 

a series of heritage site 

unveilings taking place 

across the waterways today. 

In addition to the spectacular 

Hatton Flight of 21 locks, 

another five Red Wheel 

plaques are also being 

unveiled at: 

●Edstone Aqueduct, a 

Grade II* listed structure and 

the longest cast iron trough 

aqueduct in England, on the 

Stratford Canal. 

●Gas Street Basin in Central 

Birmingham, which 

once boasted more canals 

than Venice. 

●Braunston, a picturesque 

canal village and boatbuilding 

centre at the crossroads 

of the Grand Union 

and Oxford canals. 

●Burnley Embankment, 

one of the Seven Wonders of 

the Waterways on the Leeds 

& Liverpool Canal. 

●Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, 

the Grade I listed scheduled 

monument on the Llangollen 

Canal in North Wales, and 

the tallest aqueduct in the 

UK. 

The waterways built by 

famous canal engineers such 

as Thomas Telford and 

James Brindley, brought 

unprecedented change with 

goods and raw materials able 

to be transported to and from 

the industrial heartlands of 

Britain via its canals and 

rivers to ports and then to the 

rest of the world. 

From 1760 to 1840, the 

transport arteries of the 

nation were constructed; at 

its greatest extent the inland 

waterway network stretched 

to over 5,000 miles and carried 

30 million tonnes of 

goods and raw materials 

across Britain every year. 

Firefighters called to BBQ 

TWO fire engines were called to the 

Cross Keys pub in Ely Street, Stratford, 

at 10.50pm on Sunday night after 

a barbecue fire got out of hand. 

A Warwickshire Fire and Rescue 

spokesperson said the barbecue was 

“well alight” but described it as “just a 

small fire” in the rear of the pub. 

She said: “The garden barbecue out 

the back was well alight. Firefighters 

just used small gear and one hose reel.” 

After firefighters put out the blaze 

and the two engines, both from Stratford, 

left the scene at 11.55pm.

Nigel Crowe, head of heritage 

at British Waterways, 

said: “In the next few weeks, 

the canals and rivers that 

made the country a great

River Trust. Used and visited 

more today than at any other 

time in their illustrious history, 

communities will have 

a greater role in looking after 

their local canal so it’s great 

that the Transport Trust has 

recognised their important 

place in the nation’s history.” 

Sir William McAlpine, 

president of the Transport 

Trust said: “Britain has a 

great transport heritage but 

not all of it is as recognised 

or appreciated as it should 

be. The ‘Red Wheel’ programme 

is designed to help 

clarify this and the Transport 

Trust has been delighted to 

work with British Waterways 

so that, after the unveilings,

elects new chair 

CLLR MICHAEL DOODY has taken 

over the reins as chairman of Warwickshire 

County Council. 

Cllr Doody (Cons), vice-chairman 

during Cllr Phillip Morris-Jones’ tenure, 

has been a county councillor for the Cubbington 

division since 2005 having 

served a previous term from 1997 to 

2001 representing Harbury. His duties 

include chairing meetings of the full 

county council and being the county’s 

representative at civic events for the 

ensuing municipal year. 

Cllr Doody also represents the county 

council on the Warwickshire Waste 

Management Partnership and the Warwick 

Local Strategic Partnership among 

other roles.

A WARWICKSHIRE 

pensioner has been 

jailed for 12 years after 

a jury convicted him of 

repeatedly sexually 

abusing four of his 

children more than 30 

years ago. 

The 71-year-old, who 

cannot be named to protect 

the identities of his victims, 

had pleaded not 

guilty at Warwick Crown 

Court to a total of 11 

offences against his children. 

But after considering 

their verdicts over two 

days, the jury found the 

pensioner, who lived in a 

mid-Warwickshire village, 

guilty of all 11 charges.

Jailing the pensioner, 

who was cleared of a further 

allegation of indecently 

assaulting one of his 

grandchildren in the mid- 

80s, Judge Richard Griffith-Jones 

also ordered him 

to register as a sex offender 

for life. 

Prosecutor Simon Ward 

had told the jury: “We are 

dealing with people who 

have lived for decades with 

what has happened to 

them. Eventually they 

reached the stage where 

they can tell– and that 

stage is now.” 

When he was finally 

arrested the pensioner 

claimed his children had 

put their heads together to 

make up lies about him.

(5) (i) In the event of any error, misprint or 

omission in the printing of an

adjustment will be made where the

STRATFORD Racecourse hosts evening 

racing on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd 

June to celebrate the start of the Jubilee 

Weekend. 

On Friday, there are two championship 

Hunter Chases, five other jump 

races and The Hedgehoppers Hooley 

disco. You can watch The Derby on the 

big screen at Stratford as a prelude to 

Saturday evening’s racing. 

There are seven jump races each 

evening with over £117,000 prize money 

on offer in total. The first race on Friday 

starts at 5.40 pm. 

Again this year, the two jewels in the 

crown of Hunter Chasing will be run on
