create 300 jobs’

TWO days before the crucial vote on the 

Town Square development in Stratford, 

lease-holders London & Regional Properties 

have told the committee making the 

decision that it will create over 300 jobs. 

The controversial £10 million scheme, which 

includes a new five-screen cinema, restaurants and 

cafés, will be considered by Stratford District 

Council’s west area planning committee tomorrow 

evening (Wednesday). 

Yesterday (Monday), the 

UK development director of 

London & Regional, Geoff 

Springer, released a new 

report on its economic impact, 

plus one last letter highlighting 

its claimed benefits. 

In the report, socio-economic 

experts Quod said that 

the new, larger site would 

create 198 shop jobs, 106 in 

restaurants, 24 in the cinema 

and six on construction. 

Stratford Town Council 

and the majority of Old Town 

residents are against the 

cinema because of its bulk 

and height, which they feel is 

not in keeping with the historical 

character of the town. 

In response to the objections, 

Mr Springer said in his 

letter that the development 

will revitalise the area and 

put it on equal retail footing 

with other historical towns 

such as Bath, St Albans and 

Windsor. 

He highlighted the emergence 

of a different demographic 

in Stratford that was 

not present at the special 

public meeting held by the 

mayor which overwhelmingly 

objected to the plans. 

But Mr Springer makes the 

point that only 100 people 

attended out of the thousands 

who live in Stratford. 

There is currently 4,100 sq 

metres of retail floorspace in 

Town Square, of which 3,073 

sq metres is vacant. 

After partial demolition 

and redevelopment, the new 

site would be around 7,800 

sq metres, with a cinema 

roughly 2,150 sq metres in 

size and the rest shops and 

restaurants. 

In their report to the committee, 

council planning officers 

recommended that 

planning permission be 

granted. 

The meeting, at 6.15pm in 

Elizabeth House, Church 

Street, is open to the public.

Poppy Appeal box 

thefts: man charged 

A MAN who allegedly stole two Poppy Appeal boxes from 

Henley and another in Stratford has been charged with 

theft. 

Tyrone McDermott, aged 31 from Ward End, Birmingham, 

is due to appear at Solihull Magistrates Court 

tomorrow (Wednesday). He is said to have stolen boxes 

from the White Swan Hotel and One Stop shop, in Henley, 

in early November and a third from a shop in Waterside in 

Stratford. The thefts outraged the local Royal British 

Legion. 

Officers from the Alcester North Safer Neighbourhood 

Team have thanked businesses and members of the public 

for their information and co-operation in the police investigation. 

100 drain 

covers stolen 

in seven days 

AROUND 100 metal drain covers stolen in one week 

from the roads around Alcester, Bidford and Salford 

Priors, cost Warwickshire County Council £22,500, 

writes Matt Wilson. 

In figures that emerged this week, between 3rd and 

9th January around 100 drain and manhole covers 

were taken to be sold for scrap metal. Replacing each 

one costs the council £225, and yet the value of the 

scrap metal is believed to be just £5. 

Remarkably, the crime spree occurred less than a 

month after police in Alcester targeted the theft of 

drain and manhole covers from the roads, naming it 

one of their top priorities. At a community forum 

meeting held at St Benedict’s RC School, in Alcester, 

in December, the public voiced their concerns over 

metal theft. The police’s Alcester South Safer Neighbourhood 

Team decided to carry out extra patrols 

paying specific attention to some of the more remote 

roads and lanes around the area in an attempt to 

reduce the theft of metal from highways. Last week 

they confirmed 19 of these patrols have been conducted 

since the meeting, but it appears metal theft is 

still taking place at an alarming rate. 

The safer neighbourhood team polices Alcester, 

Bidford, Salford Priors, Aston Cantlow, Bardon, 

Welford and Kinwarton.

Drive for 133 new apprentices 

CAR manufacturer Jaguar Land 

Rover, based in Gaydon, is 

launching its largest ever recruitment 

drive for apprentices. 

The company said it was 

looking for 133 apprentices to join 

the business in 2012. 

Des Thurlby, of Jaguar Land 

Rover, said: “Our apprentice 

intake has more than doubled in 

the last four years.” 

The company began accepting 

applications yesterday (Monday). 

The successful applicants would 

be based all around the country, 

including Gaydon. 

“JLR is committed to providing

academic training to develop the 

future generation of engineering 

talent needed to drive our business 

forward,” Mr Thurlby 

added. 

The group produce Land 

Rovers in Solihull and Halewood 

while Jaguars are produced at the

Volunteering Opportunities 

Volunteers are needed for the following roles: 

Voluntary Action Stratford-on-Avon District – Volunteer Drivers. Do you have the time, 

care and patience to become a Volunteer Driver? This essential service provides transport to 

hospitals, doctors and day centres, and is a lifeline to many people. An allowance of 45p per 

mile is paid for authorised journeys. 

Avon Navigation Trust – Information Volunteers. Working out of the Trust’s barge at Bancroft 

Basin, volunteers are needed from April to help sell licences to boaters and provide information 

about Stratford, the River Avon and the various organisations connected to the waterways. 

Hosking Houses Trust – Book Keeper. An experienced Book Keeper is needed for this small 

charitable trust providing residency to female contemporary writers. Duties will include 

maintaining records of income and expenditure and preparation of year end accounts. The role 

will involve around a day’s work each month. 

Stour Enterprise Centre – Business Centre Coordinator. A volunteer is needed to work as 

part of a small, friendly team in Shipston, organising events and training. You’ll get involved 

with sponsorship, fundraising and marketing, gaining exposure to all types of business and with 

the opportunity to attend business courses. 

Girlguiding Stratford District – Assistant Guider and Assistant Brownie Guider. 1st 

Stratford Guides need an Assistant Guider, 3rd Stratford Brownies an Assistant Brownie Guider. 

You’ll be given ongoing training and have the reward of watching young people gain skills and 

confidence. A CRB check will be carried out. 

Parkinson’s Stratford upon Avon Branch – Secretary. A volunteer is needed to carry out 

branch administration: dealing with post and enquiries, handling money, keeping accurate 

records and attending monthly committee and branch meetings. Good administration, 

communication and IT skills needed.

RESIDENTS of under-insulated homes in the Stratford 

district are being offered free loft and cavity 

on their fuel bill each year 

and reduce each household’s 

carbon emissions by 3,200 

tonnes over 25 years. 

The offer is open to 

everyone living in Stratford 

district. Loft insulation is 

free for lofts of up to 80 

square metres but only 

where there is less than 

60mm of existing insulation. 

Cavity wall insulation is free 

for homes where the cavity 

is up to 120 square metres. 

If a home is bigger, then the 

householder will have to pay 

the difference.

The offer is being paid for 

through the government’s 

Carbon Emissions Reduction 

Targets (CERT) funding, 

which obliges every 

energy company in the UK 

to pay for measures to 

reduce carbon emissions.

auction of 2012, splashing out for the highlysought 

after plate, DH11 LON. 

Expectations surrounding 

the personalised registration,

especially as Dhillon is a 

common Asian surname, but 

the plate had a reserve of 

only £2,000. 

No-one predicted the 

hammer would come down 

on such a huge sum on 

Wednesday, the first day of 

the agency’s three-day sale 

staged at the Stratford Manor 

Hotel. 

The expectations were 

immediately cast aside as the 

bidding war started at 

£12,600.

Chilly cancer 

patients rely 

on handouts 

FREEZING cancer patients who can’t afford to 

heat their homes due to rising fuel bills are increasingly 

relying on charity handouts to keep warm. 

Macmillan Cancer Support 

has given £17,550 in 

financial grants to 94 cancer 

patients in Warwickshire to 

assist with their energy bills 

in the last year. 

Across the UK, Macmillan 

is giving out almost twice as 

much in grants to help 

patients heat their homes 

than it was five years ago.

Despite the impact fuel 

poverty has on cancer 

patients, few patients benefit 

from government and 

energy companies’ 

schemes. Macmillan is 

calling for the ongoing 

Independent Fuel Poverty 

Review to prioritise cancer 

patients for help and for 

more to be done to ensure 

cancer patients are lifted out 

of fuel poverty.

40,000 in card 

competition 

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD pupil at Warwick Prep School 

has been announced as the winner of a national 

Christmas card competition. 

Lizzie Hunt won the lower school category of the 

charity fundraising Cauliflower Cards 2012 

Christmas Card Competition beating an amazing 

40,000 entrants. 

Cauliflower Cards ran the fundraising project 

during September to December. Each entrant’s artwork 

was professionally processed and printed to 

produce packs of personalised Christmas cards 

which are offered for sale in aid of a local charity— 

Myton Hospice in the case of Warwick Prep. 

During a whole school assembly headmaster Mr 

M Turner presented Lizzie with her certificate, and 

art kit from Cauliflower Cards as well as a box 

canvas reproduction of the card design. Lizzie was 

shocked to be the winner and thrilled with her 

prize.

Chiltern apologises for 

London rail link advert 

CHILTERN Railways have apologised for advertising 

Warwick Parkway as the route down to 

London for Stratford residents. 

Paul Boness, of the 

Shakespeare Line Promotion 

Group, complained to 

the company after a district 

councillor who booked 

tickets from Stratford 

down to London was given 

an advertisement leaflet 

which read: “Mr X, 

London’s closer than you 

think. Did you know that 

the fastest way to London 

from Stratford-upon-Avon 

is now via Warwick 

Parkway.” 

Mr Boness e-mailed 

Chiltern: “We appreciate 

that you want to promote 

your mainline services, but 

it seems odd to do so to the 

possible detriment of services 

from Stratford, even if 

they are not as fast or frequent. 

“We are obviously keen 

to promote the use of Stratford 

station rather than 

encouraging people to go 


to Warwick Parkway as a 

first option: hence this 

message.” 

In reply, John Horsman, 

liaison manager at Chiltern 

Railways, apologised for 

the mixed message and 

said that the Stratford 

CV37 postcode would be 

omitted from similar promotions

£8.6m boost 

to economic 

growth 



COVENTRY and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is to 

receive an allocation of £8.67 million from the government for the Growing 

Places scheme to stimulate economic growth. 

The aim of the scheme is 

to generate economic 

activity in the short term by 

addressing immediate infrastructure 

priorities and promote 

the delivery of jobs 

and housing. 

The grant from the 

Department for Communities 

and Local Government 

will allow the LEP to distribute 

money to businesses 

and establish a sustainable 

funding pot which will 

allow funds to be reinvested 

to unlock further development 

and attract private 

investment. 

Denys Shortt, chair of the 

Partnership, said: “We very 

much welcome the formal 

announcement of our 

funding allocation for the- 

Growing Places Fund. 

“It totals £8.67 million– 

which is slightly more than 

we expected and means we 

can invest even more in the 

local economy. 

“The Coventry and Warwickshire 

Growing Places 

Fund give us the opportunity 

to invest in and kickstart 

developments that will 

generate jobs and growth.

Farm village all 

set for a flood of 

newborn lambs 

THE sight of newborn lambs frolicking 

around the fields can be seen at Hatton 

Farm Village this month where families 

can get up close to the action with a special 

lambing marquee. 

The family attraction boasts more 

than 300 farm animals for visitors to 

meet, plus hundreds of guinea pigs in 

the petting area. 

February half-term sees the farm village 

devote its activities to the rearing of 

the year’s first young animals. Visitors 

are in for a treat with more than 50 

sheep expected to lamb over the nineday 

break, the highlight of the annual 

‘February Frolics’ at Hatton which runs 

from this Saturday until 19th February. 

The specially designed lambing marquee 

enables children to watch the newborn 

lambs being nursed by their 

mothers and some lucky visitors might 

even catch sight of a lamb actually being 

born.

Farm village shepherd Pete Mobley 

will be running talks throughout the 

week introducing children to the various 

breeds of sheep found at the farm village. 

Hatton Farm Village itself is one of 

only a handful of approved Rare Breed 

Survival Trust farm parks, which aid 

the breeding programmes of Britain’s 

most endangered farm animals. 

Farm village manager Richard Craddock 

said that the event had been hugely 

popular since its launch four years ago: 

“Newborn lambs are always an enormous 

draw for children. Most of the 

ewes we have lambing are likely to have 

multiple births of two or three lambs 

each, which makes for a very busy 

nursery! With this in mind we’ve been 

making sure that the mums are getting 

lots of rest and extra food and have 

enlisted our own ‘Little Bo-Peep’ to 

make sure that all the newborns do 

well.”

HATTON’S Ashley Morris has good reason to 

celebrate National Apprenticeship Week as she is 

a medical school apprentice with South Warwickshire 

NHS Foundation Trust.

past and current apprentices

roles across the trust.

Five new apprentices 

have been appointed and 

will start their new role this 

month in the newly refurbished 

operating theatres. 

They will be trained both 

within the department and at 

college to acquire the necessary 

skills to support the 

operating department team. 

Salford Priors 3 

raises £4,000 

for charity 

VILLAGERS from Salford Priors have presented the Pancreatic 

Cancer Trust with a cheque for £3,284 raised in the 

Salford Priors 3 charity event. 

Fundraisers were encouraged to walk, run or cycle any 

one of four routes, being four, ten, 20 or 40 miles to raise 

money for charity. 

The event took place in the summer, but following a long 

wait for match funding, the money has now been counted 

and presented to the charity. 

A further £330 was raised for Alzheimer’s charities and 

£168 for Horses Help Heroes, pushing the total amount to 

nearly £4,000. 

After such a successful event in 2011, organisers are now 

asking people to register their interest and support for this 

year’s event, taking place on Saturday 21st July.

snatched 

A PARTIALLY sighted 

woman in her 70s was left 

distressed when her glasses 

and handbag were snatched 

in broad daylight on Bridge 

Street, Stratford, last week. 

The woman’s handbag 

containing a purse with £60 

in, and glasses crucial to her 

sight, was taken from her 

shopping trolley as she 

walked from Lloyds Bank 

to the Edinburgh Woollen 

Mill shop at around 11am 

on Wednesday. 

A police spokesperson 

said the theft of her spectacles 

caused particular difficulties 

to the woman. 

Police in Stratford are 

now warning shoppers to 

take extra care with their 

purses and wallets. They are 

reminding shoppers to make 

sure they place handbags 

and purses in a secure place, 

fastened tightly and placed 

down inside any shopping 

trolleys.

Two hurt 

in A3400 

crash 

A CRASH overturned a car 

during rush hour on the 

A3400 at Bearley and put 

two people in hospital last 

Wednesday. 

A black Saab and a red 

Ford Fiesta were involved 

in the crash, but to avoid a 

pile-up a single-decker bus 

and a Land Rover stopped 

abruptly, blocking the whole 

A3400. 

Ambulance services and 

police were called to the 

scene near the Salters Lane 

junction at around 5.50pm. 

The man driving the 

Fiesta was immobilised 

with a neck brace and spinal 

board and taken to Warwick 

Hospital along with the man 

driving the Saab who suffered 

a wrist injury. 

Traffic was backed up 

while emergency services 

dealt with the crash and the 

road was closed between the 

Bearley and the A46.

Bidford men on 

drugs charges 

TWO Bidford men were charged this week with 

intent to supply heroin, crack cocaine, cannabis and 

methadone tablets. 

Tristan Welsh, aged 31, and Joel Warman, aged 30, 

both of Grafton Lane, are currently on bail due to 

appear before magistrates in Leamington tomorrow 

(Wednesday). The charges are a result of an earlymorning 

raid by police on a property in Smiths Close, 

Bidford, where two men and a large quantity of drugs 

was found. Three men were subsequently arrested but 

no further action is being taken against the third. 

SHOPKEEPERS in Stratford have another chance to help improve the appearance

SEAT is revealing an expansion 

to the Mii city car line-up with 

the first glimpse of an even more 

versatile five-door version. 

The additional rear doors turn the 

super-compact Seat into a unique 

combination of exceptional driving 

fun, sporty design and outstanding 

functionality. 

Of course the new five-door Mii 

remains true to core Seat principles— 

meaning it’s both a pleasure to drive, 

and a pleasure to own. 

In either three- or five-door form the 

Mii scores top marks for fuel consumption 

and emissions thanks to its 

lightweight design and efficient drivetrains. 

This applies in particular to the 

newly-announced Mii Ecomotive. 

Thanks to a start/stop system, brake 

energy recovery and other measures to 

improve fuel economy, the Mii Ecomotive 

makes do with just 4.1 litres of 

fuel per 100 km, equating to CO2 

emissions of only 96 g/km for the 60 

PS version and 4.2 litres per 100 km— 

98 g/km—for the 75 PS Mii. These 

statistics apply to both the three- and 

five-door versions. 

The car’s compact format—it is just 

3.56 metres long—makes it the perfect 

companion for today’s urban environment. 

Yet, thanks to its optimum use of 

space, it offers plenty of room for four 

adults. With a volume of 251 litres the 

Mii also boasts one of the largest luggage 

compartments in its class, 

expanding to an impressive 951 litres 

with the rear seat back folded. 

The new five-door, of course, offers 

even greater functionality within an 

unchanged footprint. The rear doors 

boast a wide opening angle and thus 

make for straightforward access to the 

rear bench. Small children can be fastened 

into their child seats with ease, 

shopping bags can be simply stowed 

behind the front seats and, with their 

compact dimensions, the rear doors 

also enable easy entry and exit even in 

tight parking spaces.

scene at the weekend when freezing conditions 

followed by heavy snowfall on Saturday afternoon 

wiped out virtually all outdoor sport across 

South Warwickshire. 

The entire Midland 

Alliance and Midland Combination 

football fixtures 

were postponed while just a 

couple of Stratford Alliance 

games beat the elements. 

All scheduled Midlands 

Division rugby games in the 

region were called off with 

hockey also suffering cancellations.
