THERE will be no procession through Warwick 

during this year’s carnival because the police do not 

have the resources to support it. 

Charles King-Smith, of Warwick Lions Club, who 

organise the Warwick Town Carnival every year, said 

unfortunately the Lions cannot afford the £3,000 

needed to hire a private traffic management company. 

The event is now being renamed Fun Day in the 

Park, and the Lions advise that any vehicles that

TWENTY-FIVE people 

had to be evacuated from 

a block of flats in Warwick 

on Sunday after a 

fire that police believe 

was started deliberately 

took hold of the building. 

Four people had to be rescued 

from the third floor of the 

building with a ladder and in 

total eight fire engines were 

used to fight the blaze. 

Police have arrested a 24-year-old 

man in connection with the fire, 

started around 12.30pm in the 

hallway of a block of flats in Raynsford 

Walk, in the Woodloes area. 

Four people were treated at the 

scene for smoke inhalation, and one 

woman was admitted to Warwick 

Hospital with breathing difficulties. 

Firefighters used breathing apparatus, 

two hose reels and a covering 

jet, and were on the scene until just 

after 4.15pm. 

Officers investigating the arson 

are continuing to question the male 

and are appealing for any witnesses 

to come forward. 

Police are particularly keen to 

hear from anyone who can confirm 

who was in the communal area of 

the flats before the fire started or 

anyone who saw a person running 

from the flats towards Lock Lane.

Residents rehoused after roof fire 

FIREFIGHTERS were called out to 

tackle a fire in the roof of a block of 

flats in Stratford on Sunday night. 

The roof of a two-storey building 

in Mayfield Court caught alight 

around 7pm and Warwickshire Fire 

and Rescue received several calls 

alerting them to the blaze. 

Crews from Stratford and Wellesbourne 

were at the scene until 

11.30pm and the occupants, who 

were renting the property, had to be 

evacuated. 

A gaping hole in the roof has been 

covered up with green plastic and the 

fire service said yesterday (Monday) 

that temporary housing had had to be 

provided for some of the residents 

through their letting agents. 

Firefighters are unsure how the 

fire started and called the police to 

the scene.

Ex-Stratford 

MP dies at 69 

LORD MAPLES—who as John Maples was the Conservative 

MP for Stratford from 1997 to 2010—died from 

cancer on Saturday at the age of 69, reports Preston Witts. 

A former economic secretary to the Treasury during John 

Major’s first stint as Prime Minister between 1990 and 

1992, and shadow health, defence and foreign secretary in 

opposition between 1997 and 2000, Lord Maples first 

entered Parliament as MP for Lewisham West in 1983. He 

lost the seat in 1992. 

He became the MP for Stratford in 1997 in the wake of 

the drama involving Alan Howarth, the previous Tory 

incumbent who created a sensation by defecting to Labour 

in 1995. 

In 2003 John Maples was widely believed to be among 

the “plotters” planning the overthrow of Iain Duncan Smith 

as the leader of the Conservative Party—a charge he vehemently 

denied. 

Lord Maples leaves a widow—the BBC Panorama 

investigative journalist Jane Corbin—and two children.

trucks have been part of a procession stretching 

through Warwick while the roads were closed by the 

police. 

This year, there will still be the usual arena in St 

Nicholas Park and adult admission costs £2, with 

children under 15 free. The mayor will open the event 

at 1pm on Saturday 30th June alongside the carnival 

princesses. The Warwick Show band will be back 

and there will be a big under-12s team challenge 

including, archery, shooting, javelin, and an assault

estimated £15,000 of 

damage. 

Jamie Strong, defending, 

pointed out that following 

that incident Jones had been 

remanded in custody where 

he had spent a total of 139 

days. So because that was 

the equivalent of more than 

a nine-month sentence, and 

after hearing there was a 

place available for Jones at 

a hostel, Judge Orme had 

imposed the suspended sentence.

ants march along their rope with 

the Union Jack bunting was a fascinating

though the celebrations are over, 

the ants will continue to entertain 

and amaze visitors as they march 

along their rope walkway.”

exceeding ten times their own body 

weight and next to humans, they 

form the largest and most complex

3,000 fake 

£1 coins 

TWO young women were caught with more than 

3,000 forged £1 coins as they tried to change them 

for notes in a machine at a South Warwickshire 

motorway service station. 

Emma McCallister and 

Ashley Gray pleaded guilty 

at Warwick Crown Court to 

having custody or control of 

3,296 counterfeit coins at the 

Barn Hill service station on 

the M40. 

McCallister, aged 21, and 

Gray, 20, both from Enfield 

in North London, also 

pleaded guilty to converting 

the 3,296 counterfeit £1 

coins knowing they represented 

the proceeds of criminal 

conduct. 

Prosecutor Theresa Thorp 

asked for the case against the 

two young women to be 

transferred to Southwark 

Crown Court in London. She 

pointed out that three men, 

including Gray’s stepfather, 

were due at that court for a 

plea and case management 

hearing on 27th July. 

It is alleged the three men 

were caught with a staggering 

4.1 million counterfeit 

£1 coins when they were 

arrested on 25th May. 

Miss Thorp argued that it 

would be appropriate for 

Gray and McCallister to be 

dealt with at the same 

hearing. 

Graeme Simpson, defending, 

opposed the application, 

pointing out that neither of 

them had been arrested or 

charged in relation to the 

seizure in London. 

Recorder Graham Huston 

agreed, commenting: “I see 

no reason why this case 

should be remitted to Southwark; 

these young ladies are 

not charged with that 

offence.” He adjourned the 

case for pre-sentence reports 

to be prepared on McCallister 

and Gray, and granted 

them bail.

Stratford Waterways Environmental Enhancement Partnership – Volunteer Helmsmen. 

Keeping the waterways of Stratford clear of rubbish, volunteers are needed to take the helm of a 

canal workboat crewed by 9 offenders doing unpaid work under the supervision of the Probation 

Service. Experience of handling a canal boat preferred. 

Stratford District Scouts – Cub and Scout Leaders / Assistant Leaders. Volunteers are 

needed to provide exciting, challenging and fun activities for young people in Stratford,

Campaign to 

safeguard cyclists 

on trunk roads 

A ROAD safety initiative to help protect cyclists on trunk roads—especially 

the A46 in South Warwickshire—has been launched. 

The Highways Agency, West Midlands, 

Warwickshire Police and cycling clubs 

have organised cycling awareness sessions 

and a special reporting system to improve 

safety for cyclists undertaking time trials on 

trunk roads in Warwickshire. 

The Highways Agency is responsible for 

managing and maintaining several of Warwickshire’s 

key routes including the parts 

of the A46 and A45.

“The aim of this initiative is to reduce the 

number of incidents involving cyclists and 

drivers through careful planning, education 

and raising awareness of safety,” said Highways 

Agency events planner Frank Bird. 

Twenty-five pedal cyclists were seriously 

or slightly injured on Warwickshire’s trunk 

road in accidents between 2005 and 2010.

Festival sets out to put on a range of music 

for all tastes and ages, encouraging participation 

by as many local musicians as possible. 

The Festival is organised by a small independent group to provide 

a platform for the amazing array of talent in the area and 

beyond. 

The climax of the two week festival is a spectacular ‘Last Night 

of the Proms’ event in the High Street, which features a range of 

artists including the winners of the Shipston 'Fame’ contest, which 

runs throughout the fortnight.
