Bogus guard nets 

£14,000 takings

A MAN posing as a security officer stole 

£14,000 in cash from the Poundland store 

in Stratford. 

The bogus security officer, who was wearing a 

protective helmet and body armour, calmly 

walked into the Bridge Street shop shortly before 

2pm last Thursday, carrying two cash boxes which 

were then filled up with the money. 

A cash security van from 

G4S, the company which 

normally collects the takings 

from the store, was 

parked outside and, after 

the thief left without 

signing for the money, 

Poundland staff went outside 

and saw a cash security 

officer sitting in the 

van. 

Unusual 

When they approached 

the real guard, who was 

reading a newspaper inside 

the van, he told them he 

had not yet made the cash 

collection. 

Det Insp Bob Jamieson, 

of Warwickshire Police, 

said: “This was a most 

unusual theft. The suspect 

must have made careful 

plans to coincide with the 

arrival of the cash security 

van at the store. 

“We would urge anyone 

who saw the money being 

collected early on

the Olympic security 

shambles which last week 

was in the public spotlight 

after advertising jobs for 

“civilian investigators” to 

help Warwickshire Police. 

Police are now checking 

CCTV in the town centre 

for images of the bogus 

collection man, and are 

also liaising with neighbouring 

forces to see if 

similar thefts have taken 

place elsewhere in the 

region. 

They are also seeking 

information from witnesses 

who saw the cash collection 

taking place between 

1.30pm and 2pm. Anyone 

with information should

CPRE opposes 

proposed local plan 

THE Warwickshire branch of the Campaign to Protect 

Rural England (CPRE) is opposing the scale of housing 

proposed in the Warwick District Local Plan and is challenging 

the principles that the district council has 

applied. 

The CPRE very concerned about the impact of the proposed 

plan on the green belt and strongly opposes the 

proposed rate of building in the council’s plan—555 

houses a year. It believes that the scale of development 

and the extent of urbanisation proposed would wreck the 

current attractive pattern of towns in countryside which, 

it says, people living in Warwick District value so much. 

A46 closed as 

driver is airlifted 

to hospital 

A WOMAN in her 40s was airlifted to hospital on 

Saturday afternoon after a crash on the A46 which 

led to the road being closed and temporarily disrupting 

the route to the Battle Proms concert at 

Ragley Hall, near Alcester, reports Matt Wilson. 

The woman was trapped in her red Suzuki 4x4 for 

around an hour after it rolled over twice into a corn 

field near the Stag pub, at Redhill, between Stratford 

and Alcester. She had to be cut free by firefighters 

and airlifted to University Hospital Coventry and 

Warwickshire by Warwickshire and Northamptonshire 

Air Ambulance. 

Police closed the A46 while paramedics worked at 

the scene forcing early proms-goers to make their 

way through Wilmcote and Aston Cantlow to get to 

Ragley. Officers were at the scene until 6.15pm and 

the Stratford-bound carriageway reopened at 

5.10pm. 

Police are keen to trace a white box van or lorry 

with roller shutter doors and blue writing on the rear. 

It appears the van may have lost part of its exhaust 

system, potentially causing the woman driving the 

Suzuki to swerve and lose control. Witnesses and the 

driver or owner of the van should contact PC Neville 

Cox on 01926 415465.

Will.I.am’s 

a real 

top cat 

A GINGER tom cat lists rugby, football 

and porridge, as his favourite pasttimes—and 

enjoys sleeping on his 

owner’s head, reports Simon Woodings. 

Will.I.am, from Warwick, was just 

one of 60 or so taking part in a top cat 

show in Ettington recently. 

Exhibitors from all over the country 

brought their award-winning felines to 

the 25th anniversary Midshires Siamese 

Cat Association championship show and 

two-year-old Will.I.am won best breed 

class, best colour and was voted friendliest 

cat at the show. 

His owner, Helen Hodson, pictured 

with him right, said: “He’s quite a character. 

He sits on the TV and tries to 

catch the ball on the screen during a 

rugby or football match. He helps himself 

to porridge flakes in the kitchen. He 

chases our dog around the house and at 

night he sometimes likes to sleep on my 

head.” 

Helen took Will into her home as a 

rescue cat from Stoke-on-Trent two 

years ago, but she couldn’t let go of him 

so he’s stayed at her place ever since.

No local takers for job 

as naughty ‘Mr Grey’

A STRATFORD visitor attraction is looking for its 

own Christian Grey to take women on a tour of the 

town unlike any other. 

The Falstaff Experience, 

in Sheep Street, wants to 

recruit someone to play the 

male sex icon of the Fifty 

Shades of Grey book, which 

has enjoyed a stratospheric 

rise to become the fastestselling 

paperback of all 

time. 

Jumping on the bandwagon 

of the trilogy’s success, 

the museum are 

launching ‘An Evening with 

Mr Grey,’ where woman 

will be led around Stratford 

and entertained by the supposed 

millionaire. 

Decorum 

The raunchy novels have 

been flying off the shelves 

but women expecting a particularly 

wild time might be 

disappointed. Ben Pugh, of 

the Falstaff Experience, 

said: “We will of course 

expect the chosen candidate 

to act with decency and 

decorum.” 

In the books, businessman 

Grey is a serious 

character, but Ben added: 

“Indeed, the real challenge 

will be to make the very 

serious character of Mr 

Grey appealing in a fun 

way.” 

The museum received 

their first few applicants for 

the job yesterday (Monday), 

and so far they have had 

some from London and 

some from Birmingham, 

but none from Stratford. 

Ben told the Midweek 

Herald the Falstaff was 

eager for some applicants 

from Stratford. Attempting 

to woo upwards of ten or 15 

women at the same time 

may prove easier for men 

familiar with the town, 

especially considering the 

women will have probably 

read the books and may 

have created their own 

unobtainable imaginations 

of the male protagonist. 

The closing date for 

applicants is Friday 14th 

September, and as for the 

perfect man for the role, 

Ben said: “We believe that 

the ideal person may have a 

background in acting, tour 

guiding, or worked as a holiday 

rep.” 

It has already been recognised 

by British cultural 

luminary, Stephen Fry. 

After it was suggested to 

him on Twitter that he apply 

for the role, he responded: 

“Hmm. . .50 Shades of 

Gay, then yes.” 

The Falstaff Experience 

are hoping to launch the 

tours in December, after 

employing a Christian Grey 

in September and then 

working alongside him to 

create and hone the tour. 

Mr Pugh said: “It is a 

light hearted experience, 

that will allow the visitors 

to celebrate a good time, 

drawing on some of the 

themes from popular Fifty 

Shades trilogy. Humour and 

fun are at the core of all of 

our tours and this one will 

be no different.” 

MP welcomes 

pub reopenings 

THE reopening of two pubs that faced an uncertain future 

when they closed last year, has been cheered by their local 

MP Jeremy Wright (Kenilworth and Southam). 

Mr Wright was involved in efforts to save the Red Lion, 

at Northend, and the Merrie Lion, at Fenny Compton, 

which locals vowed to reopen after lengthy periods of closure. 

Within the last few weeks both pubs have indeed opened 

their doors again much to the relief of locals. 

“I am delighted that, in the end, the owners of both these 

pubs saw sense and allowed them to stay as licensed premises 

and now, with much fanfare, new landlords, and 

hugely supportive village followings, the beer is flowing 

once again. Long may these Lions be the pride and heart of 

their local communities,” Mr Wright said.

Cancer Patient Experience 

Survey for 2011-12. This

cent of results from across 

160 NHS trusts in England. 

Patients were asked to 

complete the experience 

survey to evaluate all areas 

of their care ranging from 

waiting times to clinical 

advice. 

Results showed that 90 

per cent of Warwick Hospital’s 

cancer patients 

agreed that staff explained 

clearly what would be done 

during their cancer test and 

95 per cent of patients 

agreed they understood 

answers to important questions 

all or most of the time. 

Patients also stated that 

hospital staff did everything 

to help control their pain at 

all times and 87 per cent 

agreed that they were 

always treated with dignity 

and respect by hospital 

staff.

seen improvements since 

the 2010.

Suspended sentence 

for lorry driver 

found with knives 

WHEN police arrested a Wellesbourne lorry driver 

after he became abusive towards them outside a 

Stratford pub, they found two knives and a Stanley 

knife blade on him. 

But Paul Thombs escaped 

being jailed after a judge at 

Warwick Crown Court 

heard that he had not actually 

produced any of them 

during the incident. 

Thombs, aged 47, of 

Selwyn Close, had pleaded 

guilty to three charges of 

possessing a bladed article 

and one of possessing a 

small amount of cannabis 

for his own use. He was 

sentenced to 12 months in 

jail suspended for 18 

months and ordered to do 

an intensive 120-hour 

course of unpaid work and 

to pay £1,172 costs. 

Prosecutor Theresa Thorp 

said that in the early hours 

of 3rd March the police 

were called to the Golden 

Bee pub, in Stratford, where 

it was alleged a man had 

assaulted a member of staff. 

While the police were 

dealing with that customer, 

Thombs intervened and 

became aggressive and 

raised his fist towards one 

of the officers. 

He was arrested for being 

drunk and disorderly, and 

had since been fined for 

obstructing a police officer, 

pointed out Miss Thorp. 

But when he was 

searched after being 

arraested, the police found a 

large sheath knife, a lockknife 

and a grinder with 

traces of cannabis on it in 

his pockets. And when his 

wallet was checked during a 

further search at the police 

station, it contained a 

Stanley knife blade and a 

small amount of cannabis. 

Thombs said he had just 

got back from a camping 

trip and had forgotten about 

the sheath knife and, as a 

lorry driver, carried the 

lock-knife to get oil and 

grease from under his nails.

been doing some work for 

his sister and it may have 

come from there. 

Gary Cook, defending, 

said: “This clearly is a 

serious matter; the possession 

of knives in a public 

place, but they were not 

used to threaten or to cause 

fear. 

“Although his intervention 

on behalf of his friend 

was unwise, he did not seek 

to produce those knives.” 

Mr Cook said Thombs 

was a hard-working man 

who for the last 20 years 

has driven an HGV on the 

Continent, as a result of 

which he was away for long 

period of time in his own 

lorry. That would make it 

impossible for him to turn 

up on a regular weekly 

basis to carry out unpaid 

work. But he could be 

ordered to carry it out as 

part of an intensive programme 

of three to five sessions 

a week for the next 

few weeks, during which he 

could pay another driver to 

cover his work abroad.

AN underground fire in 

Warwick sparked numerous 

calls to the fire service when 

smoke started billowing out 

from a manhole cover. 

Around 9am last Thursday, 

a fire started by an electrical 

cable fault in an 

inspection pit in Dickins 

Road, Warwick, and a fire 

engine from Leamington 

was mobilised. 

Firefighters used carbon 

dioxide dry powder to extinguish 

the fire and were at 

the scene for around an hour 

and a half. Police and electricity 

staff were also 

attended.

Star turns for 

allotment and 

garden festival 

A QUESTION-and-answer session with Britain’s most trusted gardening 

expert and an award-winning theatre production are set to make the first 

Allotment and Garden Festival at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, in Shottery, an 

extra special ‘home-grown’ event. 

Marion Morgan, events programmer at 

the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust said: 

“This festival weekend is all about celebrating 

the best of the local community, so 

we are absolutely thrilled that Professor 

Stefan Buczacki, one of the leading lights 

of British gardening, who happens to live in 

Stratford, has agreed to open the show. 

With more than 50 books and 2,000 radio 

and TV broadcasts to his name, Stefan is 

the byword for trusted horticultural advice, 

so if you want answers to your gardening 

problems, make a date to attend his Q&A 

session on Saturday morning.” 

The weekend (8th-9th September) will 

also see performances of the Edinburgh 

Fringe Festival prize winning show Allotment, 

by Nutshell Theatre on the Saturday 

and performances of A Midsummer Night’s 

Dream on the Sunday by local theatre company 

Tread the Boards, another Edinburgh 

Fringe winner. 

More than 20 local producers, craftspeople 

and community groups have applied 

for stalls following publicity about the new 

festival in Midweek Herald. There will be 

stalls selling hand-made cards, soap, jewellery 

and pottery, garden furniture and 

accessories, and demonstrations and workshops 

of garden and country crafts. The 

Tudor team from Mary Arden’s Farm in 

nearby Wilmcote will showcase the Secrets 

of the Tudor stillroom, demonstrating the 

use of herbs and edible plants for cosmetic, 

culinary and medicinal use. 

Food and drink will all be locally 

sourced. Transition Stratford will be 

holding one of their regular picking sessions 

in the orchards, then turning the fruit 

straight into the freshest apple juice on their stand.

applications for money from its 2012 grants 

fund. 

Money has been set aside to help smaller 

organisations or individuals looking for modest 

funding in the region of £1,000 or under, 

although applications for more may be considered.

There is only one tranche of funding for this

A HATTON PARK man who groped a ten-year-old girl in the street after he 

had drunk 30 cans of lager has been told by a judge that he deserves to go to 

prison for far more than a year. 

But despite that, Judge 

Alan Parker, sitting at Warwick 

Crown Court adjourned 

Dale Radburn’s case for a 

place to be found where he 

could be assessed for residence 

at a hostel. 

Radburn, aged 34, of 

Mollington Grove, had 

pleaded guilty to sexually 

assaulting the girl in a Warwick 

park on a Sunday afternoon 

in June last year. 

Prosecutor Tom Walkling 

said that Radburn had previous 

convictions for 

alcohol-related offences, 

including shoplifting and 

minor violence, but none for 

sexual offences. To which 

the judge observed: “The 

pre-sentence report says he is 

a high risk to children.” 

Glyn Samuel, defending, 

responded: “That is based on 

the fact that he has maintained 

to the probation officer, as 

he maintains to the court, that 

he has a limited recollection 

of the events of that day. 

“That is not just because of 

alcohol. In 2001 he was the 

victim of a quite serious accident, 

as a result of which he 

has been on medication and 

has problems with his 

memory.” 

Mr Samuel said Radburn 

needed help to overcome his 

drink problem, which he had 

had for ten years, and it had 

been hoped that a place could 

be found for him at a hostel 

where he could live on the 

condition of taking part in 

various programmes. 

So Judge Parker adjourned 

the case for inquiries to be 

made to find a hostel where 

Radburn could go for a 

period of assessment, and in 

the meantime remanded him 

in custody. 

The judge said: “This 

defendant deserves to go to 

prison, and certainly 

deserves to go to prison for 

far more than a year. It is a 

good thing he is in custody at 

the moment. 

“He does present a risk to 

children; but what he did, 

although serious, is not of a 

scale of gravity which would 

enable me to prevent him 

being released after serving 

half. 

“If I sentenced him today, 

he would serve his sentence 

and then be released after a 

half, and I would have no 

guarantee that everything 

that was needed to prevent it 

happening again had been 

put in place. 

“Sometimes the public are 

better protected by not 

sending someone to prison 

but to put them somewhere 

where people work professionally 

with people like this 

defendant.”

Fatal drink-drive 

crashes rise by 18% 

THE number of fatal accidents involving 

drink-drivers last year has risen by 18 per 

cent, from 220 in 2010 to 260 in 2011 

according to figures published by the 

Department for Transport. 

In the same period, the number of 

people killed in drink-drive accidents 

increased by 12 per cent, from 250 to 280. 

This means that 15 per cent of all fatalities 

in road accidents involved drink-driving. 

Other findings include: 

●The total number of drink-drive accidents 

increased by 1.5 per cent, from 

6,630 to 6,730. 

●The total number of casualties 

involving drink-driving rose by three per 

cent, from 9,700 in 2010 to 9,990 in 2011. 

The rise in drink-drive casualties follows 

a drop in 2010, when they were at 

their lowest in 30 years.

that all-wheel-drive (AWD) 

versions of the XF and XJ 

saloons will be available in 

selected markets from the 

2013 model year. 

Offered where consumer 

demand is highest—often 

driven by climate—the allwheel-drive 

models will 

increase the capability and 

versatility of the XF and XJ 

in conditions where grip is 

compromised. 

North America, Russia, 

China and continental 

Europe will account for the 

majority of sales for the new 

AWD models which are 

powered by Jaguar’s new 

3.0-litre V6 supercharged 

340PS petrol engine. 

Adrian Hallmark, jaguar’s 

global brand director, said:

core range and is now undertaking 

an intensive programme 

of introducing new 

models, strategic powertrain 

and technologies to reinvigorate 

the Jaguar brand 

around the world. 

“The new AWD products

specific market 

opportunities by addressing 

specific regional requirements.” 

The United States is the 

world’s leading market for 

AWD sales and initially 

more than three quarters of 

the AWD models produced 

at Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich 

factory in the UK from 

October 2012 will be sold in 

the US. 

With the new addition to 

the XF and XJ ranges Jaguar 

will compete in approximately 

80 per cent of the 

luxury saloon market, four 

times its previous opportunity.

Back to the future for Town 

STRATFORD Town picked 

themselves up from the 

wreckage of last weekend’s 

hammering at Tividale in 

the FA Cup Extra-Preliminary 

Round, to secure a 

nail-biting league win. 

Back on home turf, they 

kept in touch with the early 

pacesetters in the Baker- 

Joiner Midland Alliance as 

they held on to beat 

Coleshill 2-1. 

With Town’s joint manager 

Carl Adams having 

been the visitors’ boss last 

season, this was always 

going to be an intriguing 

game as his move proved to 

be just one set of footprints 

on what became a wellworn 

path between the two. 

The fact the fixture computer 

spat out this one for so 

early in the season gave 

extra spice to an occasion 

when Town fans were 

looking for a lift after the 

previous week’s bewildering 

5-2 defeat. 

That boost arrived 

quickly in the shape of 

former striker Tony 

Robinson who was one of 

five changes in the starting 

line-up. 

There were two other new 

signings - Aaron Forde, at 

Redditch last season and 

Jordan Fincher from Solihull 

Moors – but the big 

news was the return of the 

much-travelled Robinson 

who had made one appearance 

in midweek for… 

Coleshill. 

The new-look Town then 

made a dream start as Jamie 

Bailey put them in front on 

90 seconds after a ball from 

Dan Kerrigan. 

Bailey then turned 

provider as he set up Forde 

for a second on 24 minutes. 

A double change in the 

65th minute brought the visitors 

back into the game and 

Joe Lyng pulled one back on 

80 minutes. 

They had further chances 

but Town survived and will 

look to keep up the good 

work in their Midland 

Shock at the top is 

boost for Panthers 

THE Birmingham League Second Division 

promotion race was blown wide 

open on Saturday as the top two crashed 

to unexpected defeats while Stratford 

crushed Evesham at Swan’s Nest Lane. 

The table still shows the Panthers in 

fourth but with them taking 24 points 

while Barnards Green and Brewood only 

picked up a point apiece, there is everything 

to play for in the last five games of 

the season, the first two of those taking 

place over the Bank Holiday weekend. 

Barnards Green remain on top but 

they were comfortably beaten by eight 

wickets by Attock. 

That leaves them only seven points 

ahead of Water Orton who moved into 

second after beating Halesowen by 94 

runs. 

Brewood drop to third and a point further 

back after losing by seven wickets to 

Old Elizabethans, with Stratford now 

just three points behind them - in short, 

just 11 points off the top. 

The Panthers will look to build on this 

momentum as they start their busy few 

days at Halesowen on Saturday and then 

stay on the road as they go to Old Elizabethans 

on Monday. 

If the promotion places are still up for 

grabs, Stratford’s seven-wicket win on 

Saturday finally put Evesham out of 

their misery and confirmed their relegation. 

The visitors’ sorry season has seen 

them lose all 13 games they have played, 

with the other four abandoned and they 

sit on 34 points, with their nearest rivals 

Fordhouses out of sight on 170. 

Stratford’s Peter Wilson took 4-19 and 

Tom Grundy 4-52 as Evesham stumbled 

to 113 all out. 

Wilson was then the inspiration again 

as he hit an unbeaten 60 to see Stratford 

home. 

ln the Cotswold Hills League, Bretforton 

and Earlswood are level on points 

at the top as the race for the Premier 

Division title enters the home straight. 

Having dropped behind by a point last 

week, Bretforton repaired the damage as 

they beat Stratford Bards by 151 runs, 

while Earlswood saw off Shipston by 72 

runs. 

Wellesbourne stay in touch after a 

three wicket win against Broadway but 

are now seven points behind in third with 

two rounds of matches to play. 

Alliance fixture tonight 

(Tuesday) at Kirby Muxloe. 

Elsewhere, Studley lost 4- 

1 at newly-promoted Continental 

Star, who are the 

Alliance’s early leaders. 

Continental showed little 

mercy as they went 3-0 up at 

the break and added a fourth 

before Scott Turner scored 

for the visitors with 20 minutes 

remaining.
