and health service 

SCHOOLS and some 

health services, across 

South Warwickshire are 

expected to be closed on 

Wednesday (tomorrow) as 

staff take part in a day of 

national strike action 

across the country. 

The strike is in protest at proposed 

changes being made to 

the public sector pensions. 

At the time the Midweek Herald 

went to press, over half the schools in 

Warwickshire have confirmed they

Fatal fire: bid 

to dismiss 

charges 

APPLICATIONS to dismiss the charges of 

manslaughter by gross negligence held against three 

Warwickshire fire service managers are likely to be 

made to a High Court judge. 

Station manager Timothy Woodward, aged 50, and 

watch managers, Paul Simmons, 50, and Adrian 

Ashley, 45, face charges over the deaths of four firefighters 

in the Atherstone-on-Stour warehouse blaze 

in November 2007. 

Appearing for a second hearing at Warwick Crown 

Court on Friday, none of the three managers was 

required to enter a plea, and all were bailed before a 

one-day hearing on the new applications, scheduled 

for 20th January at Stafford Crown Court. An application 

has been served on behalf of Mr Woodward for 

the charges against him to be dismissed and counsel 

for Mr Ashley and Mr Simmons are considering similar 

applications, the court was told. 

Warwickshire County Council is charged separately 

with failing to ensure the health and safety of its 

employees, the firefighters. Should the applications be 

dismissed, the three men and the council will be tried 

at Stafford Crown Court from 16th April next year. 

The charges relate to the deaths of 20-year-old 

Ashley Stephens, 27-year-old John Averis, 24-year-old 

Darren Yates-Badley and 44-year-old Ian Reid.

for Years 7,8,9 and supervised homework 

set for Years 10,11 and sixth 

form).

Fatal stabbing: 

third man charged 

with murder 

A THIRD man charged with the murder of Henley 22-yearold, 

Harry Broadhurst, appeared at Birmingham Crown 

Court yesterday (Monday) alongside the two other men. 

Scott Smith, 39, of no fixed address, was arrested on 

Thursday evening in Birmingham in connection with the 

fatal stabbing of Mr Broadhurst. 

Two other men, Paul McAteer, aged 32 from Kitts 

Green, and Liam Cole, aged 28, from Shard End, have 

already appeared in front of magistrates accused of murder 

and wounding. After making further inquiries, detectives 

charged Mr Smith with murder and wounding. He appeared 

before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Saturday. 

All three were remanded in custody after their magistrates 

court dates, and all three were due before Birmingham 

Crown Court yesterday. 

Mr Broadhurst was found slumped in the street with fatal 

stab wounds to his stomach on Sunday 20th November in 

Chelmsley Wood, Solihull.

Bike thief’s chance 

to stay out of jail 

A WARWICK man who bought a stolen bike after 

being given a suspended sentence has a chance to 

stay out of jail—despite having been told he 

would go to prison if he breached the order. 

Damien Mort, aged 27, 

of Deansway, appeared at 

Warwick Crown Court after 

he had pleaded guilty to 

breaching a suspended sentence 

order made at the 

court in May for affray. 

Catherine Vernon, prosecuting, 

said Mort had 

breached the order by committing 

a further offence of 

receiving a Carrera mountain 

bike which had been 

stolen from the garden of a 

house in Truman Close, 

Warwick, at the end of 

August.

moment not to breach the 

order or to comply with it. 

“If my cynicism is made 

out and he does not comply, 

he can only expect one 

thing – and that is an implementation 

of the suspended 

sentence. If he co-operates 

he will be dealt with as 

suggested by an order to do 

more unpaid work.”

a life 

with the 

hospice 

LOCAL people who 

wish to remember a late 

loved one at Christmas 

have a special opportunity 

to do so this weekend. 

The Shakespeare Hospice’s 

annual Light up a Life 

service—an event created to 

help the bereaved deal with 

their loss and remember 

them—will be held in the 

Great Gardens of New Place, 

in Stratford, this Sunday. 

A tree is lit and remains lit 

in the gardens for the whole 

of the Christmas period as a 

symbol of relighting those 

lives and remembering. Individuals 

may sponsor lights 

on the tree and make a dedication 

for their loved ones in 

the books of remembrance. 

Forms are available in the 

hospice shops or from the 

hospice. 

All are welcome to come 

and join in the service at 4pm 

with King Edward VI School 

band and Holy Trinity Choir 

and listen to readings from 

hospice staff and volunteers. 

You do not have to have used 

the hospice to take part— 

everyone is welcome. After 

the service mulled wine and 

mince-pies will be served in 

the town hall.

Sewer works

Christmas 

SEVERN Trent and its contractors, Morgan Sindall, 

have agreed to an early suspension of part of the 

£2.7 million investment project to upgrade the sewerage 

system in Alcester until after the holiday 

season. 

Work began on 19th September 

on Stratford Road 

near to the entrance to the 

town and will continue along 

the road towards the town 

centre until next 2012. However, 

in agreement with the 

local townspeople and businesses, 

Severn Trent will 

stop work in time for 

Alcester’s annual St 

Nicholas’ Night Festival 

next Tuesday. Work will 

remain suspended until 3rd 

January so that traffic can 

flow freely in both directions 

during the busy Christmas 

shopping season. 

Work will continue, however, 

away from Alcester 

town centre along Newport 

Drive, from this Thursday 

until 23rd December, and 

along Bleachfield Street 

between this Friday and 23rd 

December.

for Severn Trent, said: 

“Alcester is a busy market 

town and we are doing all we 

can to keep disruption to a 

minimum. That’s why we’d 

originally agreed to suspend 

work from 30th November 

until after the busy holiday 

shopping season. We know 

how important Alcester’s

is to the local townspeople, 

and we wanted to ensure this 

could go ahead without hindrance

Singers brighten up 

hospital patients’ stay 

PATIENTS at Warwick Hospital have recently 

been treated to a visit from local girl group, Constellation. 

The group of girls from 

King’s High School in 

Warwick volunteered to 

sing classic songs to 

patients on Guy and Victoria 

Ward, with patients 

commenting that it made a 

lovely change to their day. 

Patient Experience is at 

the forefront of the priorities 

of South Warwickshire 

Hospitals Foundation Trust, 

which runs the hospital, to 

encourage new ventures 

that will make a difference 

to a patient’s time within 

the trust’s care. 

Recently the hospital 

launched two initiatives. 

The first is ‘Let’s Do 

Lunch’ which is aimed at 

asking visitors to support 

their loved ones during 

meal times, which can

Juror problem 

halts fraud trial 

in its third week 

THE trial of a businessman accused of bleeding 

his companies dry with the help of an accountant 

and his lawyer mother had to be halted as it 

entered its third week. 

Jayson Hollier, aged 39, of 

Emscote Road, Warwick, at 

the time he was charged, has 

pleaded not guilty at Warwick 

Crown Court to four 

charges of fraudulent trading. 

The charges relate to two 

insurance firms, Shakespeare 

Underwriting Ltd and CIA 

Insurance Services Ltd, and 

Oxlowes Properties Ltd 

which was used to get more 

than £4 million from a bank. 

Hollier’s mother, solicitor 

Linda Letchford, 59, of 

Cromwell Lane, Coventry, 

and company accountant 

Andrew Booth, 59, of Colton 

Street, Leicester, have both 

denied two charges of fraudulent 

trading. In addition 

Hollier and Booth have each 

denied two charges of perjury 

relating to evidence they 

gave during a hearing in the 

High Court, and Booth has 

denied stealing £45,000 from 

Shakespeare Underwriting. 

The trial was expected to 

last up to three months, but as 

it entered its third week 

Judge Amjad Nawaz was 

informed of a problem which 

had arisen involving one of 

the jurors. 

As a result, that person, 

who it was said had acted 

perfectly properly, was discharged 

from the jury—and 

following discussions 

between the judge and the 

barristers in the case, he 

decided not to continue the 

trial with the remaining 11 

jurors. 

So the jury was discharged 

and the case was adjourned 

for the trial to start again with 

a new jury in the New Year— 

and all three defendants were 

granted bail until then. 

Prosecutor Jonathan 

Ashley-Norman had alleged 

the three had “lied their way 

to the appearance of commercial 

success and 

respectability.” He said that 

Hollier ran Shakespeare 

Underwriting Ltd and CIA 

Insurance Services Ltd, 

which were ‘substantial and 

successful’ insurance companies, 

while Booth was the 

financial controller. 

“To those who worked 

within them and those who 

dealt with them, both companies 

appeared successful. 

They were generating plenty 

of work and plenty of cash. 

“The veneer they created 

was polished by Linda Letchford 

who was a solicitor and 

whose involvement gave it

British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal 

with a donation of £200. 

They organised a mixture of 

fundraising events involving at least 100

Because of intense financial 

pressure, the defendants 

set about re-financing Hollier’s 

extensive property 

empire—but are alleged to 

have deceived Lloyds Bank 

over the value of property 

owned by Oxlowes Property 

Ltd to obtain more than £4 

million. 

Mr Ashley-Norman also 

alleged that when it was plain 

as a pikestaff in January 2006 

that Shakespeare was 

doomed, Booth stole £45,000 

from its account.

of the National Union of Headteachers 

strike for the first time in its 114-year history. 

Stratford and Warwick hospitals and Warwickshire 

Community Services will operate 

limited services in some areas due to the 

impact of the industrial action; however 

there will be no impact to any emergency 

services. 

All the local NHS trusts have been 

working closely with trade union representatives 

to ensure emergency care (including 

emergency maternity care) and patient safety 

is not compromised in any way during industrial 

action. All urgent social care response 

services will be available for the duration of 

the strike, Warwickshire County Council residential 

homes will operate as normal as will 

home care services. 

County council day care services for older 

people will be open, although there may be 

limited transport arrangements. The council

The TUC estimates up to two million 

public sector workers including teachers, 

nurses, probation officers, civil servants, 

cleaners, paramedics and dinner ladies will 

take part in the day of action in what they 

believe could be the biggest strike in a generation.

Matthew Curtis 

Arguably the past decade’s most accomplished hair stylist, Matthew Curtis is a driving force within fashion and beauty. 

His innovation and influence can be felt in experimental editorial fashion and beauty features, and in prominent campaigns and runway 

spectacles worldwide. Season after season, his looks define contemporary style. 

Matthew has created looks for Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Falguni & Shane Peacock and Marc Jacobs and has carried his expertise 

through many campaigns. 

Matthews trend-establishing style is featured regularly in Vogue, Marie Claire & Elle Magazines. Through the strength of his collaborations

Lauren began her hairdressing career at the age of 14. Moving to Portugal at the age of 16 she continued her training and became a 

qualified stylist and colour technician. At the age of 20 she returned to the UK to further her career. 

Lauren joined the Matthew Curtis team 2 years ago and has since been competing in shows and competitions, achieving 1st place in the 

Region and 3rd place in the UK, at the L’Oreal Colour Trophy. She continues to strive for more.

through on going recommendations from highly satisfied clients.

I am salon manager and love nurturing and supporting the young ambitious team. I have 23 years experience hairstyling, beginning when 

I was 14. Having completed a two year course in unisex hairdressing, beauty and make up I left with a distinction, the student of the year 

award and also an honoury award for wig making from the incorporated guild of wigmakers and perfumers. I have worked in salons in 

Stratford for a number of years, gaining experience from each salon and a large client base, some of which are still with me 20 years on. 

Working for Matthew has broadened my outlook and confidence. This year, with his encouragement Lauren Thomas and I entered the 

l’Oreal colour trophy: we won the best in region and came a national third – it was amazing! Colour is my true passion now, as well as my 

dream to either help lead Matthew Curtis education programmes, inspiring others, or become global brand manager of Matthew Curtis 

hair products.

Pamper 

room 

for care 

home 

RESIDENTS at a care 

home in Ullenhall now 

have a stylish reminder 

of a friend who loved to 

look her best. 

Last week Mockley Manor 

Care Home celebrated the 

opening of a pamper room in 

memory of great-grandmother 

Ruth Baldwin. 

Mrs Baldwin died in June 

aged 92 and her family 

decided to donate money in 

her memory to create a bright 

new room to help keep the 46 

residents looking lovely. 

Clients will be able to 

relax in calm and comfy surroundings 

while their hair is 

washed and styled, their nails 

are manicured or they enjoy a 

soothing massage. 

There is also a portable 

washbasin which can be 

wheeled to other areas so residents 

who are poorly or bedbound 

don’t miss out. 

Mrs Baldwin’s son, John, a 

company director aged 66, 

officially opened the pamper 

room on Friday. He said: 

“My mother was a very 

proud person and her appearance 

was important to her. 

She loved to have her hair 

and nails done at the home 

but had remarked that the 

hairdryer was old and needed 

replacing. There had been 

plans for a sponsored walk 

by staff to raise cash towards 

new equipment and mother 

had made me promise to join 

in. But the walk had been 

postponed and after she died 

it seemed a fitting tribute to 

donate money in her memory 

to create the new room. I’m 

sure she would be very 

pleased.”

THE M42 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 3) (NORTHBOUND ENTRY SLIP 

ROAD) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2011 

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Secretary of State for Transport 

intends to make an Order on the M42 Motorway, in the County of 

Warwickshire, to allow sign and signal repair work to be carried out. 

The effect of the Order will be to close the slip road leading to the 

northbound carriageway of the M42 at Junction 3. 

Work will be carried out over one night between 21:30 hours and 06:00 

hours and is expected to start on Monday 19 December 2011. 

The Order will come into force on 12 December 2011. 

Vehicles being used for police, fire brigade or ambulance purposes 

and vehicles being used in connection with the works or by a Traffic 

Officer will be exempt from the closure. A diversion route via M42 

Junction 2 will be well signed.

rights in some style after demolishing South Warwickshire 

rivals Studley 6-1 at the DCS Stadium 

on Saturday, writes Mick Clewes. 

Morton Titterton’s side 

led 4-0 at half-time with the 

strong wind at their backs 

thanks to goals from leading 

scorer Chris Murphy, Ricky 

Baker, Stuart Herlihy and 

Josh Blake. 

A second half brace from 

man-of-the-match Mykel 

Beckley saw them extend 

the lead to 6-0 before the 

Bees scored a last-minute 

consolation goal through 

Paul O’Brien. 

Titterton told the Midweek 

Herald: “It’s always 

nice to beat your local 

neighbours but it’s the performance 

that counts. 

“We have been playing 

well but struggled to find 

the net recently but we put 

that right in this game. 

“We have had problems 

with injuries and players 

being unavailable but now 

several of them are back we 

are starting to work as a 

team again. 

“This was a good allround 

team performance 

that was rewarded with the 

goals. 

“Craig Attwood is due to 

return to training this week 

after his injury and it will be 

good to have him back. 

“We still don”t know how 

long Sam Alsop will be out 

but we are starting to get a 

settled team again.”

Successful season 

WARWICK Boat Club bowls section held their 

annual presentation dinner on 19th November in 

their club pavilion where approximately 60 members 

and guests attended. Club captain, James Alty, presented 

trophies to winners of the various inter-club 

competitions. 

Leading skip, Barbara Froggat, represented the 

club at the Stratford Herald Ladies Triples League 

presentation evening where she picked up a special 

prize. 

The bowls section also held their AGM on 21st 

November, ending the evening with a musical slide 

show of every event held during their highly successful 

sesquicentenary season.
