TWO people have been
<strong>arrested</strong> on suspicion of
murder after a man was
<strong>found</strong> <strong>dead</strong> at his home in
Alcester.
A 19-year-old woman and a
52-year-old man were <strong>arrested</strong>
on Saturday after the body of
Martyn Deeming, aged 33,
was <strong>found</strong> by police at his
home in Stratford Road.
The pair were questioned over the
weekend and released on police bail
on Sunday night pending further
inquiries.

Mr Deeming’s body was discovered
last Wednesday, almost a
month after he was injured in an
incident.
A post mortem examination carried
out last Thursday was inconclusive
so police are awaiting results of
further tests to determine the cause
of death.
Mr Deeming is known to have
suffered an injury in an incident in
Ragley Mill Lane, Alcester, on Saturday
12th November.
Police detectives would like to
hear from anyone who spoke to him
between that time and Wednesday

chippie to be one of the tastiest in Stratford.
Loukas Louvias, a religious man who took over the shop
six months ago, asked Mr Gorick to come and bless his
fish and chips. Although he is Greek Orthodox and his
wife is Russian Orthodox, Mr Louvias attends the Holy
Trinity, in Stratford, the Anglican church where William
Shakespeare is buried, because the nearest Orthodox
church is in Birmingham.
Two trapped
in car after
A46 crash

TWO men were rushed to hospital after a
4am crash on the A46 between Stratford
and Alcester left them trapped in a car.
Firefighters were called to the scene at Drayton
Barn new cottages on the Alcester Road just before
5am and had to cut out the men from a silver Peugeot
406. They were then taken to Alexandra Hospital,
in Redditch, one of them in a serious
condition.
The A46, between Oversley Green and Drayton
was closed to traffic until 10am causing major tailbacks.
No other vehicle is thought to have been involved.
Warwickshire Police would like to hear from any
travellers who were on the A46 shortly before 4am
on the day of the crash and who may have seen the
silver Peugeot 406. Anyone with information should
call the force’s major road investigation unit on
01926 415415.

Nigerian firefighters’ visit
WARWICKSHIRE County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service
have hosted an international visit for the Nigerian
Federal Fire Service as part of an international development
programme, which included a visit to Stratford Fire
Station.
Seven visitors, including the chief and deputy chief fire
officer of the Nigerian Federal Fire Service and a member
of the ministry came to look around Stratford Fire Station
as part of a programme being run by the Fire Service College
in partnership with Bournemouth University.

Fined £4,000 for
copyright breach

A STRATFORD man who sold ‘chipped’ games
consoles, allowing counterfeit games to be played
on them, was last week sentenced to 12 months of
community service and fined £4,000.
Mark Burkey, aged 42,
from Justin’s Avenue, ran a
website offering ‘chipped’
consoles and illegal games
for five years, causing an
estimated financial harm to
the gaming industry of hundreds
of thousands of
pounds.
In court, he pleaded
guilty to 13 offences
breaching the Copyright
Act, after earlier this year,
trading standards seized a
considerable number of
illegal devices from his
home.
The consoles and games
sold at cheap prices on the
website circumvented copyright
protection measures.
He claimed he did not
realise that the process of
modifying games consoles
was illegal, that he never
deliberately intended to
defraud manufacturers, and
that he had made very little
profit from it.
He must now complete
150 hours of unpaid work in
the community and the
court told him if he committed
a further offence
during the next 12 months,
he could face imprisonment.

Pompoms in
memory of
loved ones

POMPOMS in memory of loved ones hang from some
Christmas trees in shop windows in Stratford and
across the district this year as a way of celebrating a
person’s life during the festive season and raising
money for charity.
Instead of traditional Christmas tree decorations, pom
poms are being hung as an alternative to raise money
for the In Memorium Pompom Tree Appeal for Guys
Gift—a charity which offers bereavement support to
children and their families throughout South Warwickshire.
The pompoms cost £1.50 and can be bought with a
memorial card for people to write down their thoughts
of a loved one who has passed away. Both items are
then hung from the branch of a Christmas tree in the
windows of businesses taking part in the festive
appeal.
Hanging pompoms for Christmas is the idea of Tracey
Flavell who is a volunteer for Guys Gift and a funeral
advisor at A Dyer & Sons in Studley.
“Initially, I thought we may raise a small but much
appreciated amount, the response has been great and
I would like to raise a minimum of £500 so we are
aiming to make 1,000 pompoms. If they all get sold it
would raise more money and would help the charity
achieve and reach so many more fmilies who need our
support,” Tracey said.
Guy's Gift offers bereavement support to children and
their families throughout South Warwickshire, the
service is free of charge and works on a one to one
basis with children, offers guidance to schools, provides
workshops for the whole family and trains volunteers.
The pompoms are available to buy from the following

Pump-priming
scheme will
take time
IT will take months before the top of the housing
market can benefit from the government’s pumppriming
of the bottom end, Tom Dennes, head of
C P Bigwood’s Stratford-based country homes
division, has predicted.
His comments follow
David Cameron’s new £400
million initiative which aims
to “unlock” the sector.
Set to start next July, it
aims to provide 16,000 new
homes and create 32,000
jobs in England. Buyers of
new homes will be offered
the ability to borrow 95 per
cent of a property’s value
with the government underwriting
some of the risk via
a mortgage indemnity
scheme.
Mr Dennes said: “The
Prime Minister has claimed
this will get builders to
build, lenders to lend and
first-time buyers to buy.
“As an initiative it is a
good thing, sends out the
right message and is to be
encouraged. In theory it
should work if it is carried
through.
“But land has to be identified,
planning permission
sought, so nothing will
happen for at least a year.
The effect will take even
longer to filter upwards. And
there lies the conundrum.
“The reality is…this can’t
be done overnight. So,
although it is welcome, it is
not going to make much difference
to the market in the
short-term.
“Quality homes in good
locations are generating
demand—for example, one
of our properties, No.5 Tyler
Street, an elegant double
fronted Grade II listed late-
Georgian town house in
Stratford, with a guide price
of £935,000, went on the
market at the beginning of
October was advertised,
viewings conducted, a sale
agreed, processed through
the lawyers and contracts
exchanged, all within six
weeks.
“Demand is there, but
generally you have to work
harder to get deals over the
line. That is going to be the
case for some time to come
and is where our expertise
can make a difference.”

parcels
for the
needy
WARWICK Lions Club,
with help from their friends,
collected almost 3,500
items of tinned food doorto-door
round the town on
Sunday to make up 160
large parcels for the elderly
and needy of the town.
Most of these were distributed
later that day.
The previous day, club
members collected money
at the entrance to Tesco, in
Emscote Road, for their
charity funds, the <strong>two</strong> chief
beneficiaries of which are
Myton Hospices and Warwickshire
and Northamptonshire
Air Ambulance.

Next Saturday the Lions
will help to run the carols at
Warwick Castle event
jointly with Warwick Rotary
Club and the Friends of St.
Mary's Church Choir. This

THE early Christians did not celebrate the birth of Christ as anything special, being more concerned with Easter
and what that meant to them. Christmas Day in early Christian Rome was merely a day without shows, races or
spectacles taking place in the circus.
Celebrations around the winter solstice have been going on since time immemorial. Our early ancestors held festivals at this time of year.The object of the exercise
was probably to propitiate local gods, to ensure as many people as possible would survive the rigors of winter, without the comforts of civilization we all now
take for granted. One last ‘binge’ before the troubles began was therefore only natural in a generally hard and cheerless world.
Special foods first appeared in Tudor times when mince pies, representing the infant Christ in his cradle, were made.The mince within represented the Magi’s
gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, and a tiny, pastry baby nestled in the sunken tops of the oval pies. Christmas pudding was a thick rich, porridgy concoction. It
was representative of plenty about to become famine, and eating it was a ritualistic matter. Charms were placed in the mixture and finding one augured well or ill
for the finder for the year to come. Coins meant wealth, a thimble meant spinsterhood, a ring meant marriage, a bell probably denoted a birth, and so on.
Christmas cake has probably been around for a lot longer than either of the above.
Yule logs are yet another reminder of the old beliefs. Burning
one special log on Christmas Day was a ritual that entailed
retaining all the ashes and placing them in the chimney the following
year.This was supposed to protect the household from
evil and bring warmth and comfort throughout the winter.
Mistletoe has been inherited from the Druids for whom it
represented mysticism connected with human sacrifice. Kissing
beneath it is part of an ancient fertility rite that, if it is done
properly, should entail the removal of one berry for every kiss
exacted.
Party hats have their origin in the masks worn at medieval
celebrations when the Lord of Misrule danced before the meal.
In their turn these masks probably originated in masks worn to
fend off evil spirits that were surely waiting to enter homes and
capture those within, in the long hours of darkness during prehistoric
winter nights.
The whole Christmas season and its history is steeped in
similar stories, strange happenings, and an odd atmosphere of
goodwill and happiness amongst the most alien of men.
How or why this occurs is just part of the mystery that is
Christmas, the magic of a season so many have come to celebrate
in some measure, regardless of religious beliefs.

THE M42 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 3) (NORTHBOUND ENTRY SLIP
ROAD) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2011
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Secretary of State for Transport
has made an Order on the M42 Motorway, in the County of
Warwickshire, to allow sign and signal repair work to be carried out.
The effect of the Order will be to close the slip road leading to the
northbound carriageway of the M42 at Junction 3.
Work will be carried out over one night between 21:30 hours and 06:00
hours and is expected to start on Monday 19 December 2011. The
Order will come into force on 12 December 2011.
Vehicles being used for police, fire brigade or ambulance purposes
and vehicles being used in connection with the works or by a Traffic
Officer will be exempt from the closure. A diversion route via M42
Junction 2 will be well signed.

STRATFORD Town battled
back from a 2-0 first-half
deficit to earn a Midland
Alliance point with a 2-2
draw against high-flying
Gresley at the DCS Stadium
on Saturday, writes Dean

In a thrilling match,
watched by the season’s
highest attendance of 248,
Gresley ended the game
with nine men—having had
<strong>two</strong> sent off within seconds
of each other in the last five
minutes.
Town took full advantage
and snatched their equaliser
four minutes from the end
of normal time through the
returning Sam Alsop, who
had also headed home Stratford’s
first on the hour.
The men from Derbyshire
looked a class above in the
opening 45 minutes and <strong>two</strong>
goals from the tricky Mark
Goodfellow after 24 and 40
minutes had left Town
reeling.
But manager Morton Titterton
must have said all the
right things at the interval
and his team looked a yard
faster in the second half as
they tore into the Moatmen.
In the end, a draw was the
fairest result.
Tonight (Tuesday), Stratford
Town play their last
home game before
Christmas when Ellesmere
Rangers are the MFA opponents
at the DCS (kick off
7.45pm).
