A CONVOY of around 200 cars drove to Wilmcote on Sunday night, to hold 

a lantern-lit vigil at the crash site where two young men were killed. 

Mike Dugmore, aged 21, of Aston Cantlow Road, in Wilmcote, and Mikey Abdou, 19, 

from Hockley Heath, died on Saturday afternoon after the black Ford Fiesta they were travelling 

in was involved in a head-on collision with 

an open-top tourist bus in Featherbed Lane. 

The crash was so severe 

the engine was ripped from 

the Fiesta and the bus ended 

up embedded in the wall of a 

nearby house. 

It killed the two young 

men and injured all three 

people travelling on the bus. 

Mr Dugmore and Mr 

Abdou were known as car 

enthusiasts, and one friend 

estimated around 800 people 

made the trip to the site on 

Sunday, where they left tributes 

and lit a flame to 

remember the two men. 

Among the hundreds of 

flowers and letters, some of 

the most prominent gifts at 

the scene were car badges 

and car wax. There was also 

champagne, dumb-bells, and 

a motocross helmet. 

Police were forced to close 

the road because of the 

volume of traffic created by 

the motor cavalcade for the 

two well-liked men. 

On-line tributes have also 

poured in. More than 1,500 

people are members of a 

Facebook page dedicated to 

them, where Rachael Dugmore, 

Mike’s sister, paid her 

respects. She said: “I’m 

gunna miss you two like 

there’s no tomorrow, every 

day just watching for you to 

walk through the door and 

ask for food and a cuppa and 

start washing your cars.” 

After Sunday’s vigil Ms 

Dugmore said on Facebook: 

“You are both very loved lads 

as you saw tonight.” 

And Mr Dugmore’s oldest 

sister, Lynsey Peel, described 

the page as a wonderful idea. 

She said: “It will really 

help me and the other mem-

reforms welcomed 

SHIPSTON Primary School, which has 

been at the forefront of using technology 

in the classroom, has welcomed 

government plans to reform ICT education. 

At the school children as young as 

four use iPads on a daily basis to 

enhance literacy, maths and creative 

play, while 11-year-olds learn video 

editing, podcasting and programming. 

In his recent speech at the BETT 

show for showcasing educational technology 

and practice, Education Secretary 

Michael Gove announced plans to 

ditch ‘dull’ computer lessons and let 

schools design their own exciting, creative 

and challenging ICT curriculum. 

Shipston Primary has already implemented 

many of the government’s recommendations 

and over the last three 

years has invested significantly in technology 

and ICT training. 

Headteacher Christian Hilton said: 

“Our investment in new technology and 

willingness to make our ICT curriculum 

challenging, innovative and exciting has 

contributed to substantial improvements 

in learning. 

“We believe that ICT can be used in 

every aspect of learning and that it is 

essential our children are equipped for

The City Sightseeing bus 

involved in the crash was 

making its way back to Stratford 

from Mary Arden’s 

Farm with two passengers. 

The driver, a man in his 50s, 

broke his leg in the accident, 

and the two passengers on 

the bus were also injured. A 

woman in her 50s suffered a 

suspected fractured ankle, 

and a man in his 50s suffered 

a laceration to the head. All 

three were taken to Warwick 

Hospital. 

Featherbed Lane was 

closed for most of the day 

after the crash at 3.15pm as 

police collected evidence and 

cleaned up the debris that littered 

the road, an indicator 

into the huge impact of the 

crash. 

A West Midlands Ambulance 

Service spokesman 

said Mr Abdou, the driver of 

the car, suffered multiple 

serious injuries in the crash. 

“Unfortunately, nothing 

could be done to save him 

and he was confirmed dead at 

the scene.” 

The passenger in the car, 

Mr Dugmore was found in 

traumatic cardiac arrest. 

He immediately received 

advanced life support at the 

scene, but unfortunately, 

despite the best efforts of 

ambulance crews, nothing 

could be done to save him 

and he was also confirmed 

dead at the scene. 

Police have launched an 

investigation into the crash.

collision or saw either 

vehicle and the manner in 

which they were being driven 

prior to the collision is asked

vodka plant is 

found in Alcester

AROUND 7,000 litres of counterfeit vodka has 

been seized from an industrial unit in Alcester. 

Two men from Worcestershire 

were arrested in 

dawn raids on Friday on 

suspicion of supplying 

denatured alcohol and 

equipment used to produce 

illegal spirits. 

HM Revenue and Customs 

believe the seizure is 

a dent in the illicit trade 

controlled by criminal 

gangs.

The operation is linked 

to a similar raid in July last 

year when three men were 

arrested and 12,000 litres 

of counterfeit vodka 

branded “Arctic Ice,” was 

also seized from an 

Alcester unit. 

On that occasion, HMRC 

seized glass bottles and a 

labelling machine needed 

to produce illegal alcohol. 

Investigations are 

ongoing as to how much 

fake vodka has already 

been produced and may be 

in the public domain. 

Adrian Farley, assistant 

director of criminal investigation 

for HMRC, said: 

“Today’s action shows our 

determination to unravel 

the gangs behind this form 

of criminality. 

“Those involved have no 

regard for the devastation 

they cause. They show a 

complete disregard of 

health and safety at production 

sites which could 

have easily resulted in a 

major explosion and loss of 

life. In addition, counterfeit 

vodka poses potential 

serious health risks to the 

public.” 

Forensic analysis of the 

haul in July revealed dangerous 

levels of methanol,a 

secondary alcohol used as 

antifreeze, solvent and 

cleaning fluid—which is 

unfit for human consumption.

alcohol to contact the Customs

their flair

STUDENTS at Kineton High School have been busy 

taking part in a competition entitled ‘Young Apprentice—Who 

Wants to be an Entrepreneur?’ 

Working in tutor groups students competed against 

each other to create a new snack food product. Over a 

series of lessons the students created product concepts, 

names, packaging, promotional ideas and business 

plans. 

The students then went head-to-head, presenting 

their ideas for their products to a team of judges who 

included Beverley Dunkley from the specialist chocolate-maker 

Barry Callebaut as well as deputy head 

Chris Sammons, assistant head John Leahy and school 

business manager, Fiona Hawkins. 

The overall winners were Moolicious Ice Cream who 

impressed the judges with their coherent and well 

thought through product and presentation. Other winners 

were Naughty or Nice for best product concept; 

Pac-man in a Pac-et, best packing design; Lloyd & 

Squire Smoothies, best business plan, and Chocoballs, 

best marketing. Mighty Bites was highly commended.

MP’s hopes 

for advocacy 

scheme 

LOCAL MP Jeremy Wright believes a scheme 

being tested in Stratford could help to protect 

people in care homes from being abused. 

Independent Advocacy, a 

countywide independent 

charity, is running a trial in the 

town, funded by the town 

trust, where advocates go into 

various care homes to work 

confidentially with residents 

and pick up on any concerns 

which they are reluctant to 

raise directly with the staff. 

Mr Wright, MP for Kenilworth 

and Southam, said: 

“This is an excellent scheme. 

People are looking for ways to 

act which will prevent abuse 

in care homes and, if this 

project is successful, it could 

be a scheme which could be 

run out across the county, and 

indeed the country, funded by 

the homes themselves.” 

Independent Advocacy was 

also doing very valuable work 

with dementia sufferers and 

those with physical and 

learning disabilities and 

mental illness, he added. 

“There is huge value added 

by this organisation, its employees 

and volunteers in 

assisting those with little voice 

of their own and who may be 

amongst the most vulnerable 

in our society, to put their case 

and secure the help they

ISC Year 11 exam results 

GCSE and IGCSE exam results from 39,451 candidates at 550 Independent Schools Council (ISC) 

schools show that this year 31.4% of entries achieved grade A*. This compares with 29.5% of entries 

achieving A* in 2010, and is the seventh consecutive yearly rise.

show a rise of 1.2 percentage 

points to 61.4% 

of entries at ISC 

schools being graded 

A* or A, compared with 

23.2% nationally. 

39,309 pupils (99.6% 

of the Year 11 cohort) at 

all 550 ISC schools participating in ISC’s survey took at least one GCSE. 

Between them they took a total of 318,382 GCSEs. 

21,516 pupils (54.5% of the Year 11 cohort) at 312 schools took at least one 

IGCSE. Between them they took a total of 63,883 IGCSEs. IGCSEs 

accounted for 16.7% of all Year 11 exam entries at ISC schools. 

ISC Deputy Chief Executive Matthew Burgess said: “These are excellent 

results reflecting the commitment and enthusiasm of many thousands of 

pupils and teachers in the independent sector. Six out of every ten entries 

from ISC pupils resulted in the top grades of A* and A. This is a tremendous 

achievement and we congratulate each and every pupil.” 

Provisional results were released by ISC. Full school-by-school analyses 

are available online at www.isc.co.uk, but the aggregate data, for both GCSE 

and IGCSE combined, show that candidates in ISC schools took an average 

of 9.7 subjects each, and: 

• 31.4% of all exam entries received the A* grade, up from 29.5% last 

year (national average 7.8%, up from 7.5% in 2010) 

• 61.4% were graded A* or A, up from 60.2% in 2010 (national average 

23.2%, up from 22.6% in 2010) 

• 95.2% were graded A* to C, compared with 95.3% in 2010 (nationally, 

69.8% were graded A* to C, compared with 69.1% last year) 

• 93.4% achieved five or more A* to C grades including Maths and 

English (national figures for 2011 are not yet available, but in 2010 

the national figure was 53.4%). 79.8% of ISC pupils achieved five or 

more A* to C grades including Maths, English, a Science and a 

Modern Foreign Language 

• In 217 schools (39.5% of the total), every pupil achieved five or more 

A* to C grades. In a further 151 schools (a further 27.5% of the total) 

95% or more of pupils achieved this standard. 

For ISC schools as a whole, the figures show that candidates achieved an 

average total of 486.2 points – equivalent to a nine subject result of 3 A*s and 

6 As – and an average subject entry result of 50.2, which is closer to an A than 

a B.

Parents view independent schools more favourably than ever, survey finds... 

A SURVEY of attitudes towards independent schools has revealed that the proportion of parents who would send their children 

to an independent school far outstrips the proportion who would not. 

Fifty four per cent of those parents polled said they would send their child to an independent school, while only 26 per cent said they would not. This gap of 28 percentage points has 

never been greater in the past 15 years of the survey; in 1997 the gap was ten per centage points. 

When those parents who said they would send their child to an independent school were asked why, the most popular answer was “Better standards of education”. Other popular 

answers were “Better start to life/more chances in life/better chance for future careers”, “better discipline”, “smaller classes/smaller pupil-teacher ratio” and “better results/would get on 

better”. 

The survey, commissioned by the Independent Schools Council (ISC) and carried out by Populus, also revealed the 57 per cent of adults believe that educational standards are higher 

in independent schools than state schools, a higher proportion than for all previous years of the survey; only seven per cent think the opposite is true, while 27 per cent think standards 

in both are similar. 

Other findings included: 

• 76 per cent think that independent schools provide good university 

and employment prospects for pupils (up to 71 per cent last year), 

only three per cent do not (down from four per cent last year); 

• 75 per cent of people think that independent schools provide oppor 

tunities to fulfill their potential (up from 71 per cent last year), only 

four per cent do not (up from three per cent last year); 

• 68 per cent of people think that independent schools provide excel 

lence in the teaching of maths, science and languages (up from 61 

per cent last year), only four per cent do not (up from three per cent 

last year); 

• 52 per cent of people think that independent schools offer bursaries 

and scholarships which help to broaden access and increase social 

mobility, only 10 er cent do not; 

• 12 per cent of adults attended an independent school. Around half of 

adults have had come kind of experience or contact with the inde 

pendent sector, either directly through their family (22 per cent) or 

through friends/other family members (35 per cent). Eight per cent of 

parents have a child currently attending an independent school and 

the same proportion have a child who previously attended an inde 

pendent school. 

Commenting on the findings, ISC’s Head of Research Rudolf Eliott Lockhart 

said: “These findings show that the public recognises the high quality of independent 

schools, associating them not only with high academic quality but 

also with a broader education including arts, drama, music and sport. As a 

result, a clear majority of parents would like to send their children to an independent 

school. It’s also encouraging to see public recognition of the significant 

bursaries that independent schools offer that help to broaden access and 

increase social mobility.”

Chance to stay out 

of jail for man on 

suspended sentence 

A WARWICK man who bought a stolen bike after being given a suspended 

sentence has taken a chance he was given to stay out of jail for breaching the 

order.

Damien Mort had appeared at Warwick 

Crown Court in November for breaching a 

suspended sentence order made at the court 

earlier in the year for an offence of affray. But 

after hearing he had only just started an anger 

management course as part of the order, the 

judge on that occasion adjourned sentence 

until this month. 

Mort, aged 27, of Deansway, was told that 

if he did not comply fully with the order he 

would be going to jail. And at the resumed 

hearing, after being told he had done so, 

Recorder Sam Mainds allowed the order to 

continue and ordered Mort to do an extra 50 

hours of unpaid work. 

Recorder Mainds, who also ordered him to 

pay £50 costs, told Mort: “You have sensibly 

rectified the position. If you had not, you 

would have been going through the other 

door. Make sure you do the work, because 

you won’t get another chance.” 

Previously the court had been told that 

Mort breached the order by committing a further 

offence of receiving a Carrera mountain 

bike which had been stolen from the garden 

of a house in Truman Close, Warwick, at the 

end of August last year. 

Magistrates dealt with him for receiving 

the bike by imposing a community order with 

60 hours of unpaid work—but it also put him 

in breach of his suspended sentence. 

Mort had also breached the order by 

attending only about half of his probation 

appointments, said Catherine Vernon, prosecuting 

at the hearing in November. 

But Peter Freeman, defending, pointed out 

that Mort’s probation officer believed an 

anger management programme was important 

for him—and he had only just started it.

Hospitals backing 

PM’s ‘dignity and 

compassion’ call 

PRIME Minister David Cameron recently called for every patient in the UK 

to be cared for with compassion and dignity—a vision shared by South Warwickshire 

NHS Foundation Trust which has already made patient care a top 

priority in its hospitals for several years. 

The trust, which runs the hospitals in Warwick, 

Stratford and Shipston, says it will continue 

to take common sense measures to help 

the drive toward dignity and care including, 

cutting down on paperwork to spend more 

time with patients, increase patient status 

reviews, and increase the number of nursing 

rounds to assess patient dignity, nutrition and 

risk of falls. 

The trust has also encouraged greater 

liaison with family and friends of patients to 

improve understanding of treatment and care. 

Warwick Hospital was named as one of the 

most recommended hospitals in the country 

by patients. It has been listed as the fourth 

most recommended NHS acute hospital in 

the country. 

Trust chief executive Glen Burley said: “I

lives not moving in traffic on their daily commute, 

according to a new study by Continental

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984-SECTION 14(1)(a) 

THE M42 AND M40 MOTORWAYS (M42 JUNCTION 3A) 

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2012 

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Secretary of State for Transport 

intends to make an Order on the M42 and M40 Motorways, in the County 

of Warwickshire to allow drainage survey works to be carried out. 

The effect of the Order will be to close at different times the link roads 

at M42 Junction 3a leading from - 

i) the northbound carriageway of the M42 to the northbound 

carriageway of the M42; 

ii) the northbound carriageway of the M42 to the southbound 


iii) the southbound carriageway of the M42 to the southbound 


iv) the southbound carriageway of the M42 to the southbound 


v) the northbound carriageway the M40 to the southbound 

carriageway of the M42; and 

vi) the northbound carriageway the M40 to the northbound 

carriageway of the M42. 

Work will be carried out over night between 22:00 hours and 06:00 

hours and is expected to start on Monday 13 February 2012 and 

continue for approximately seven weeks. The Order will come into 

force on 6 February 2012. 

Vehicles being used for police, fire brigade or ambulance purposes 

and vehicles being used in connection with the works or by a Traffic 

Officer will be exempt from the closures. Diversion routes using 

alternative junctions on M40 or M42 will be well signed.

Warwick coach lifts Lambs 

FORMER Racing Club Warwick manager Marcus Law— 

who now manages Blue Square Bet Premier Division outfit 

Tamworth—has praised Warwick-based motivational 

sports coach Bernie De Souza for his team’s recent performance 

against Everton in the FA Cup. 

Tamworth, lying 15th in the league and some 96 places 

below the Premiership team, held Everton to an early fiveminute 

lead before going out of the competition 10 minutes 

from the end when the Toffees scored their second goal. 

Law said: “We are always looking to develop our players 

and the squad dynamic and Bernie’s expertise in the ‘chemistry 

of communication’ gave us that opportunity. He 

started looking at the different personality types that make 

up our squad and gave the coaching staff and the players 

valuable feedback as to how to maximise the strengths of 

the different personalities.” 

De Souza said he used personality profiling to identify 

the strengths and weaknesses of the players and coaching 

staff in order to help them all understand one another better. 

“In this way, I could help them optimise their relationships 

and eliminate any potential conflicts, enabling them 

to be a more cohesive unit, working as champions both on 

and off the pitch,” he said. 

“I wanted to help Marcus because he was forwardthinking 

and open-minded and realised the importance of 

man management and that having control of the changing 

room was the key to success.”
