Hospitals rated
highly by staff
and patients
PATIENTS at hospitals in South Warwickshire are
more likely to recommend the service to family and
friends than the majority of other hospitals in the
Midlands and East of England, reports Matt Wilson.
For the last six months, the South Warwickshire
NHS Trust, which oversees hospitals in Warwick,
Stratford, Shipston, and Leamington, has been in the
top nine out of 46 trusts in the region.
The monthly test, introduced by David Cameron
last year, asks patients whether they would “recommend
an NHS service to their friends and family.”
The results come after Warwick Hospital was rated
fourth in the Dr Foster Hospital guide for NHS hospitals
in 2012, and received the ‘UK’s Most Improved
Hospital’ award in 2011.
Staff at South Warwickshire NHS Trust hospital
are also happier with their jobs than the majority of
other NHS workers in the UK. Each year the Department
of Health asks NHS staff a variety of questions
about their employers and the results of their 2012
survey were published last week. The trust scored in
the top 20 per cent in the majority of categories and
workers are above the national average for job satisfaction.
The only area which was below the national
average was linked to staff appraisals.
As reported on Page 3, the trust is paying off its
£18.5 million debt this month.

residents on Thursday about their
plans. They hope to submit a formal
application in April but residents
have already started a campaign
group to fight the scheme.
The local Liberal Democrat district
councillor, Kate Rolfe, who
lives in nearby Avon Crescent, said
Thursday’s meeting was “fairly
busy” with the general feeling
“completely and utterly against” the
plans.

area planning committee tomorrow.

lodged an objection but the district
council’s planning department has
recommended that the scheme be
given the green light.
The plan is for six two-bedroom,
four three-bedroom and eight fourbedroom
houses, with eight out of
the 18 allocated as affordable
housing.

Drain cover thief
is jailed for
3 1 /2 years
A STUDLEY man has been jailed for stealing metal drain
covers worth more than £42,000 from roads all over the
Midlands, including Alcester.
Graham Leith, aged 27, from High Street, was jailed for
three-and-a-half years at Worcester Crown Court on Friday
after he admitted stealing 170 drain covers over a threemonth
period.
The judge, Recorder John Steel QC, said that Leith had a
wholly reckless disregard for the public and it was simply
good luck that no-one had been injured.
PC Tom Birchley, of West Mercia Police said after the
hearing: “Stealing drain covers and leaving gaping holes in
the road clearly put members of the public at risk. As well
as the obvious safety implications, the cost of replacing the
drain covers was huge, and needed to be met from public
funds.”

2012.

Suspected drug-dealer
arrested after chase
AN 18-year-old man was chased by
police in Alcester on Thursday night
and arrested on suspicion of dealing
cannabis.
Two special constables on a routine
patrol pulled into the courtyard of a
factory in Tything Road, Kinwarton,
just after midnight.
They saw a teenager run from the
direction of an empty building.
They stopped him and arrested him
on suspicion of possessing a Class B
drug with intent to supply after finding
a bag containing what they believed to
be a small amount of cannabis nearby.
Following questioning, the man was
released on police bail pending further
inquiries.

The exhibition, at Stratford Town Hall between
1pm and 4pm on Thursday 14th March, will show

trust to clear
£18.5m debt
THE NHS trust that runs Stratford Hospital, Warwick
Hospital, and Ellen Badger Hospital in Shipston,
will clear its £18.5 million debt this month, it
has been announced.

“This is an important
milestone for the trust,” said
trust chief executive Glen
Burley. “It really validates
all of our recent achievements
and allows us to have
an even stronger platform
for the future.

factor is that all of the future
money that the trust makes
can now be invested back
into care—keeping our core
focus on our patients.”
The trust was also able to
open the Aylesford Unit at
Warwick Hospital—which
specialises in cancer services—in
2009, and in 2010
invest £3.6 million in a new
radiology department and
launch the state-of-the-art
Helen Clarke Suite which
specialises in breast care.

A WILL can be the catalyst for long and acrimonious family battles unless
you regularly review and update it, family law experts at lawyers Lodders are
warning.
And where foreign property
and more than one marriage
are involved it can
become even more complicated
to untangle.
Helen Rowett, a partner in
the law firm which has
offices in Stratford, Henley
and Cirencester, said the
bitter battles over the estates
of Peter Ustinov and Bernard
Matthews were proving
extremely costly.
“They are further complicated
by the fact that both
owned property abroad,” she
said. The EU penetrates into
yet more areas of our affairs,
and sometimes we are not
aware of it.You may have
read recently of the family
disputes over the estates of
Bernard Matthews and Peter
Ustinov, and you may think
that those arguments are out
of our league and confined to
the rich and famous.
“There are more noughts
on the numbers, but the principles
apply to more of us
than you may think,” she
said.
Peter Ustinov died in
2004, aged 82. He lived in
Switzerland. He had four
children and he had been
married three times, but the
last will he made had been
written in pencil 36 years
ago, while he was divorcing
his second wife and before he
married Helene, now his
widow. As a result he was
judged to have died “intestate”,
ie without a valid will.
His children have been litigating
ever since—there are
ongoing court proceedings in
Switzerland and in January
this year in the High Court
here. The judge here commented
on the appalling costs
run up since the actor's death.
Mrs Rowett said: “Bernard
Matthews had done a proper
will, but he was aware of the
law in France, where he
lived, and said that he hoped
his children would honour
his wishes.”
Mr Matthews had a villa in
France, to which French law
applied. Under French law,
the children were automatically
entitled to three quarters
of the French property, as
French law gives guaranteed
rights to children, and as a
result he could only leave
one quarter to his long time
partner. He wrote to the children
asking them to allow his
partner to receive the villa,
but three of the four children
claimed their share and
nothing could be done to stop
this.
They also claimed part of
his English estate, but the
judge here refused to admit
the claim, saying that Mr
Matthews had not wanted
them to share in his estate
and that the English court
would honour his wishes.
Mrs Rowett said: “Many
British have holiday homes
in France and Spain, and
dreams of retiring there. That
is fine, but it is important to
understand the results.
“It has long been standard
advice to make a Spanish
will when you buy a Spanish
property. In most cases,
Spain allows an English
owner to make provisions for
his heirs of choice to inherit.
French law does not, at least
not as regards French land,
although there are ways to
reduce the effect of this.”
A new EU Succession protocol
is due to come into
force in August 2015. In
theory this will allow an EU
citizen’s estate throughout
the EU to be dealt with either
in accordance with the law of
the country in which he is
“habitually resident” or if he
so chooses, the law of his
nationality.
Mrs Rowett commented:
“That should make things
simpler, but the devil will be
in the detail, as always.”

caused by “grinding metal
bolts.”
Firefighters received a
call to a small fire in the roof

Station Road at 7.15pm.

Search for the old boys
of the Swinging Sixties
WARWICK School is tracking down
former pupils for a Sixties reunion
on 29th June this year.
The event is open to anyone who
left the school during the 1960s, as
well as those who taught them.
About 300 old boys, their partners
and former members of staff are
expected to attend the event, the last
in a series of ‘decade’ reunions
before the school celebrates its
1,100th anniversary next year.
Nigel Robinson, a past president
and former chairman of the old
boys’ association, who joined the
school in 1955 as a seven-year-old
boarder, said former pupils would
be coming from all around the
world—the Far East, Africa, North
America, Australasia and Europe.
“It should be an incredible day,”
he said. “Some of us won’t have seen
each other for more than 50 years—
so name badges will be essential!”
The day will include a reception,
chapel service, lunch, tours of the
school, a group photograph and a
further reception for those Old Warwickians
who turn 65 years old this
year.

public exhibition on

Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to find out
more about a small but powerful group of councillors
who advise the authority’s political leader.

of £7 a year for Severn Trent customers in Warwickshire,
it has been announced.
The average combined
bill for water and sewage in
2013-14 will rise to £355, a
price hike of 2.2 per cent.

However, Severn Trent’s
average of £177 is below the
industry average of £186,
and the company’s average
sewage bill of £158 is more
than £40 cheaper than the
industry average of £202.
Severn Trent also pointed
to a £24 million investment
in Warwickshire, renewing
more than 80,000 metres of
water mains over the next
five years.
The company currently
delivers almost two billion
litres of water every day
through 46,000km of pipes.
A further 91,000km of sewer
pipes take waste water away
to more than 1,000 sewage
treatment works.

the manager of the Shakespeare
Hospice Bookshop.

the hospice’s seventh shop

funds towards caring for
local families affected by
cancer and other life-limiting

loved entertainer ‘Zoobee’ has
been crowned British Children
Entertainer’s National Champion.
Shane West, aged 36, more commonly
known as Zoobee, scooped
first prize last year in the Kidology
UK Awards for Children’s Entertainment,
has now won the most
prestigious competition in the
industry.
A record number of more than
3,400 magicians were in attendance
at the Blackpool Magic Convention
with around 1,500 adults and children

Shane, who left school at 16 to
become a hairdresser, always
wanted to perform and had a passion

Coventry Magic Circle gave him
the opportunity he had wished for.
Having spent a year as a bluecoat
at Pontins, Shane turned professional
and started working at
Hatton Adventure Farm in 1999.

STAFF from NFU Mutual will set off
on a Top Gear-style driving challenge
to Paris today (Thursday) and hope to
raise £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer
Support and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The challenge will be to drive to the
French capital and back in a car purchased
for less than £500, including
alterations, road tax and MoT.
Ten members of staff from the life
sales development team will be taking
part in the challenge and also completing
various tasks along the way.
Their 716-mile round trip will take
place over four days, starting from
NFU Mutual’s head office on Tiddington
Road, going through the Euro-
Tunnel to Calais, and then driving on
to Paris.
The colleagues taking part are
making up five teams of two, and they
have each personally funded the purchase
of their own cars, and will be
covering their own driving expenses.
The winning team will receive a
trophy donated by a local company.

favourite eating establishments following a devastating fire in October 2012.

On arrival the opulent setting, traditional Thai
decoration with glorious view belie the fire damaged
interior four months earlier.
The Thai Boathouse, Stratford-upon-Avon has taken
full opportunity of the five months taken to refurbish the
kitchen and restaurant to ensure a breathtaking
experience, culinary and visually.
Our our arrival the chef, Somnuek Coney was keen o
show her culinary expertise and enthused over the
dishes on offer. Unable to settle on a starter the house
mixed starter of authentic Thai options was selected. the
selection, a feast in itself was beautifully presented and
displayed intricate carvings from vegetables as
decoration.
The main course was something of a dilemma as the
choices were as varied as the British weather.
I settled on roasted duck in a creamy Chu Chec sauce
with coconut cream and Thai herbs. My friends could not
resist perusing the extensive seafood option before
settling on whole sea bass steamed in soy sauce
garnished with ginger, chillies and spring onions.This was
accompanied by a rather zingy papaya salad with fresh
chilli, fine beans, tomato and roasted cashews in palm
sugar, lime with a fish sauce dressing. The sea bass with
the fresh salad was exquisite and a real sensation to the
taste buds.
The next course was once again a spicy number of
chicken stir fried with cashew nuts, onions, peppers, chilli
and oyster sauce. This was complimented by the
traditional accompaniment of egg fried rice. This dish did
not fail to live up to it’s reputation, a winter warming
afterburn taking the chill out of a late winter’s afternoon.
The generous portions negated the need for a dessert,
but digestion was aided by a full selection of teas and
coffee. A wide choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic
drinks included the expected, but also a selection of Thai
wines.
The re-opening of the Thai Boathouse allows this
popular restaurant to take it’s place at the forefront of
providing quality Thai cuisine in an opulent setting for
residents and visitors of Stratford-upon-Avon.
The enforced closure, has only served to prove the old
adage of ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’ to be
correct as Stratford welcomes a valued comeback of this
exceptional restaurant.

who defied
restraining order
AN ALCOHOLIC who attacked his former girlfriend
after turning up at her South Warwickshire
home in defiance of a restraining order against
him, has been jailed.
Tim McAllister pleaded
guilty at Warwick Crown
Court to assaulting Wenda
Allen, breaching the
restraining order and being in
breach of a suspended prison
sentence.
McAllister, aged 50, of
Floyer Road, Small Heath,
Birmingham, was jailed for a
total of 14 months.
Prosecutor Richard Franck
said that McAllister and Ms
Allen, who lives in Lower
Quinton, had been in a relationship
which had lasted for
about 18 months. But in June
last year, for an assault on her
during which he grabbed her
hair and banged her head
against a wall, McAllister
was given a 12-week suspended
prison sentence and
ordered to take part in an
alcohol treatment programme.
He was also made
subject to an indefinite
restraining order under
which he was banned from
contacting Ms Allen or going
to her home.
Despite that order, McAllister
turned up at her home
on 31st August, although Ms
Allen who, said Mr Franck,
was completely dependent
on alcohol, could not say at
what time because she was

already drunk.
McAllister asked if he
could stay, and she agreed,
but after he went out on 3rd
September she decided she
did not want him there and
refused to let him in when he
returned at 6pm.
He threatened to break the
door down, so she opened it,
and he then began shouting at
her, accusing her of having a
relationship with a friend of
his, and punched her twice.
McAllister spent the night
there, and when Ms Allen
woke the next morning he
threatened her.
She then suggested that
she go to a nearby shop to get
something to drink, and he
allowed her to leave, but
instead she called a friend
who went to the shop to collect
her.
The court heard that
McAllister had entered his
guilty plea on the basis that
he had punched her twice to
the face, but that other
injuries she was found to
have had been caused when
she had fallen down the stairs
a few days earlier.
Mr Franck added that as
well as his assault on Ms
Allen, McAllister had other
convictions for violence,
including assaulting an expartner
in 200 and a girlfriend
in 2002.
Tom Walkling, defending,
said: “Mr McAllister has
been an alcoholic since he
was a teenager.
Volatile
“As alcoholics frequently
do, he finds himself in relationships
with women who
are also alcoholics; and those
relationships are unhealthy
for all concerned and they
become volatile.
“He knows he cannot continue
with relationships like
that, and he is determined to
have absolutely no contact
with this woman ever again.”
Mr Walkling, who conceded
that it had to be a
prison sentence, added that
since being remanded in custody
McAllister had been
forced to dry out.
Judge Sylvia de Bertodano
jailed McAllister for nine
months for the assault, with a
consecutive three-month sentence
for breaching the
restraining order, and also
ordered him to serve two
months of his suspended sentence
on top of that.
She told him: “You know
that violence is always more
serious when it happens in a
domestic context because
someone who is entitled to
look to you for love and support
is met by violence.
“This lady was particularly
vulnerable because she
was an alcoholic; and you
should know better than most
how vulnerable that made
her because you are also an
alcoholic.
“Your behaviour is aggravated
by your previous convictions
for assault in a
domestic context and by the
exceptional vulnerability of
this victim.”

SEAT is expanding the Mii
family with the introduction
of the new Mii Ecofuel—the
company’s lowest-emitting
production car ever.
The Mii Ecofuel runs on
compressed natural gas
(CNG), bringing top efficiency
and significantly
reduced running costs without
sacrificing the model’s
fun driving dynamics.
The first model with a
CNG engine to wear a SEAT
badge, and making its debut
at this week’s Geneva Motor
Show 2013, the Mii Ecofuel
boasts average consumption
of just 2.9kg CNG/100 km.
The 1.0-litre, 68 PS engine
is based on the three-cylinder
petrol unit found in the Mii
(with 60 PS and 75 PS outputs),
but it’s been specifically
developed for CNG
operation. Its CO2
figure of
just 79 g/km is best-in-class.

KEY POINTS
NEW RAV4 delivers a wider customer appeal with improved
styling, more on-board space, better performance and higher specifications
across a wider model range, all from a lower entry price
than the current model.
New 2.0-litre D-4D diesel Active and Icon 2WD models both
offered at lower on-the-road prices than current RAV4 entry model
(XT-R 2.2 D-4D 2WD).
Ownership costs supported by higher powertrain efficiency, with
CO2 emissions from a new low of 127g/km – band D for road tax
(VED) – for the new 2.0-litre D-4D diesel.
Introduction of a new RAV4 grade structure – Active, Icon and
Invincible.
Toyota’s new RAV4 range offers more models to choose from,
higher equipment specifications and lower emissions across the
board, yet the line-up starts at a much lower price than the model it
replaces.
The fourth generation RAV4 benefits from Toyota’s new focus
on designing and engineering cars that have more distinctive looks
and deliver a more rewarding driving experience. It also addresses
growing customer demand for more on-board space – both for passengers
and their luggage.
The new model is available in both two (front) and all-wheel
drive across three new grades: Active, Icon and Invincible.
Entry point is the new 2.0 D-4D Active 2WD version, available
at £22,595 on-the-road. Both this model and the more highly specified
2.0 D-4D Icon 2WD (£24,295) undercut the current XTR 2.2
D-4D 2WD on price. At the same time, both also maintain high
equipment specifications: Active grade comes with 17-inch alloys,
air conditioning, Bluetooth, electric windows front and rear, rear
privacy glass and front fog lights; the Icon spec’ includes a powered
tailgate (now top-hinged for easier loading), a folding function on

the powered door mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming
rear-view mirror, part-leather instrument panel trim and dual-zone
automatic air conditioning. The Toyota Touch multimedia touchscreen
system also features on Icon models, with a DAB digital
tuner, rear-view camera and Bluetooth.
At the top of the range the new Invincible adds more premium
equipment features such as roof rails, leather upholstery, heated
front seats, rear parking sensors and Smart Entry and Start. Further
supporting new RAV4’s wider appeal, Invincible grade offers the
choice of six-speed manual as well as automatic transmission.
The new RAV4 delivers lasting ownership cost benefits, demonstrated
by its new 2.0-litre D-4D diesel engine, which takes the
2WD models’ CO2 emissions down to a new low of 127g/km,
attracting a zero road tax charge in the first year of ownership. For
company car drivers, there’s an added bonus in a lower benefit-inkind
rating, down to 16 per cent.
Lower emissions are also achieved by both the 2.2-litre D-4D
diesel and 2.0-litre Valvematic petrol engines that are carried forward
from the current line-up.
Options
A RANGE of options and two option packs is available for new
RAV4, giving owners a cost-effective way of adding extra style,
comfort and equipment to their vehicle.
The Toyota Touch touchscreen control system on the Icon and
Invincible models can be upgraded to Touch & Go, adding satellite
navigation and on-board connectivity to Google Local Search (with
appropriate mobile phones and service plans) with access to useful
applications for more detailed local information and resources.
These models can also be equipped with a sunroof.
Leather upholstery can be specified for the Active and Icon
models, while Invincible owners can take advantage of Toyota’s
advanced safety technology by adding the Lane Departure Warning
and Blind Spot Monitor systems.
A Style Pack, comprising a front guard plate, side steps and front
and rear scuff plates, is available for the Icon and Invincible, while
a Protection Pack (front and rear parking sensors and a rear bumper
protection plate) can be added.

unexpired part of any order without penalty
in the event of the death or failure of its

(8) (i) The copyright for all purposes in all
artwork, copy and other material
which the publisher or its employees
have originated, contributed to or
reworked shall vest in the publisher.

The publisher is hereby authorised to
record, reproduce, publish, distribute
and broadcast (or to permit the same)

limited to text, artwork and
photographs) and to include and
make them available in any

(9) The placing of an order by an advertiser, or
an advertising agency on behalf of a client,
constitutes an assurance that all necessary
authority and permission has been secured

property is held at the advertiser’s risk and
should be insured by him against loss or

Navigation Trust
The Avon Navigation Trust (ANT) is an independent charitable
navigation authority looking after the 47 miles of navigable River
Avon from Alveston above Stratford upon Avon to where the river
meets the River Severn at Tewkesbury. The Trust has administered,
maintained and improved the river since its restoration over
50 years ago and now operates a busy public facing facility from
their floating Waterways Information Centre at Bancroft Basin
Stratford upon Avon.
Stratford Waterways Information Centre Officers x 2 posts
35 Hours per week over 3-4 Days
1 April – 31 October – circa £250 per Week
Together these two roles are responsible for the efficient running
of our Information Centre at Stratford upon Avon from 1 April to 31
October. Duties involve: selling boat licences to boaters passing
through Stratford, running a small gift shop, welcoming visitors
and enhancing their experience by promoting information about
the local waterways and Stratford and carrying out general administration
duties.
You must have a pleasant and friendly manner with people, and
ideally have had experience in running a shop or working in a
tourist information centre. You should be familiar with Stratford, the
surrounding area and have some knowledge of the local waterways.
Good IT Skills with experience of Microsoft Office is essential
and you must be flexible, adaptable and an excellent communicator.
