running in heat three of the 110m hurdles inside the 

Olympic Park at 10.10am today (Tuesday). If he gets 

through, the 20-year-old from Stratford Athletic Club, 

will run in a semi-final at 7.15pm on Wednesday.

SOUTH Warwickshire legendary showjumper Nick Skelton 

won an Olympic gold yesterday (Monday) ending his long wait 

for a medal in this, his sixth, Olympic Games. 

Based near Alcester, 

the 54-year-old pulled 

out perfect performances 

on Sunday and Monday 

to spearhead the fourman 

squad to Britain’s 

first gold in showjumping 

for 60 years. 

The action went down to 

the wire as Team GB were 

forced to compete in a 

jump-off with the Netherlands 

for the gold medal, 

after both teams scored the 

same points during the regular 

rounds. 

Riding nine-year-old 

stallion Big Star, Skelton, 

who recovered from a 

broken neck in 2000 to 

return to the pinnacle of the 

sport, rode superbly on 

Monday and was one of 

few riders to post two clear 

rounds, knocking over none 

of the barriers.

24 hours will be absolutely

Andrew is scheduled to 

compete in the 110-metre 

hurdle heats this morning. 

The semi-finals take place 

tomorrow (Wednesday) 

from 7.15pm and the final 

is due at 9.15pm the same 

night. 

He told the Midweek

year 2012 has been great so 

far and I’m looking forward

wouldn’t believe. I’m very

the excitement and media 

coverage that’s been 

building over the last few

O2 staff in baton relay 

STAFF at the O2 store in Stratford are 

taking part in a baton relay which hopes 

to raise money for 58 youth projects 

across the UK. 

The baton will travel from one O2 

store to another before it reaches its final 

destination at the O2 Arena in London. 

The challenge for the Stratford O2 

team is to raise £250 for the youth projects—as 

each of the 116 O2 stores has 

promised to do—and then relay the 

baton to its next stop in Rugby. This has 

to be done without the use of motorised 

transport.

It follows a complete 

review of household waste 

recycling centres (HWRCs) 

in Warwickshire to make 

budget savings of over 

£900,000 from the service. 

The reshaped service has 

enabled seven-day opening 

to remain at the eight busiest 

sites and the county council 

has maintained overarching 

control of all the sites, 

including provision of technical 

and management support. 

Under the new arrangements, 

HWRCs at Burton 

Farm, in Stratford, and in 

Shipston are operated 

directly by the council with 

weekday opening of six 

hours a day. Shipston has a 

re-use shop run by Warwickshire 

Community Recycling 

for the benefit of the community, 

while Wellesbourne’s 

re-use shop is operated 

by Warwickshire Community 

Recycling with 

support from the council. 

A four-week public consultation 

has begun this 

month to gain views on the 

changes at the sites. The consultation, 

which closes on 

2nd September is available

‘On yer bikes’ urges the British Heart Foundation 

THE British Heart Foundation (BHF) 

is calling on local people to get on their 

bikes and join the Warwickshire Bike 

Ride supported by Santander. 

The event, which is now in its fifth 

year, will be held on Sunday 30th September 

starting from Stoneleigh 

Showground between 9am and 

10.30am. 

More than 700 are expected to 

saddle up and help to raise £31,000 for 

the vital work of the BHF. There will 

be a choice of a 30- or 50-mile route 

making it the perfect opportunity for 

families and keen cyclists to get 

involved. The route will take in the 

beautiful Warwickshire countryside 

going through quiet villages and 

country roads.

Tarantula 

at local 

care home 

A TARANTULA, a giant 

land snail and a gecko will be 

paying a visit to residents at a 

Bidford care home next 

week. 

Animal company Zoologica 

Ltd will be visiting 

Waterloo House Care Home, 

in Waterloo Road, with the 

exotic animals for a ‘touch 

and hold’ day on Monday. 

Residents and staff brave 

enough will be able to hold 

and pet a tarantula, a lizard, a 

gecko and a giant land snail. 

And for the more fainthearted, 

Zoologica will also 

be taking along more fluffy 

visitors for cuddles, 

including rabbits and guineapigs. 

Waterloo House activities 

co-ordinator Jen Clay said 

everyone was nervously 

looking forward to the event. 

“We’ve had a few people 

pull faces at the prospect of 

holding a giant snail or 

spider, but they might change 

their minds on the day,” she 

said. “I’m not sure I’m 

adventurous enough to hold 

the spider. 

“We’ve never had such 

exotic visitors before, 

although we do regularly 

have rabbits and guinea pigs 

visiting, and we have a 

therapy dog once a month. 

“Residents’ families also 

sometimes bring in pets that 

our residents may have had 

to leave when they came to 

us, which they always enjoy. 

“We’ve printed off our 

own pictures of exotic animals 

which we have been 

sticking up around the home 

to get everyone in the mood.”

THE mum of a Stratford soldier killed in 

Afghanistan is trying to raise money to improve 

the appearance of Shottery War Memorial at St 

Andrew’s Church. 

The name of Naomi 

Whittaker’s son, Joe Whittaker, 

is inscribed on the 

memorial. 

Later this month she is 

leading a 12-mile fundraising 

walk from Warwick’s 

war memorial to St 

Andrew’s Church to raise 

money for restoration of the 

Shottery memorial. 

She said: “We have 

noticed for some time that 

due to weathering and the 

growth of lichen, the names 

have become difficult to 

read. We want to restore it 

to a condition fitting to the 

sacrifice and memory of the 

37 men who gave their lives 

in the First World War, the 

Second World War, and 

recent conflicts.” 

Private Whittaker was a 

member of the TA in Stratford, 

attended Stratford 

College, played hockey for 

Stratford Hockey Club and 

ran for Stratford Athletic 

Club. He was killed in 

action in Afghanistan in 

June 2008, aged 20, whilst 

serving with the Parachute 

Regiment. 

On Saturday 18th 

August, 36 sponsored 

walkers aged between 12 

and 80 will be trekking 

from memorial to memorial. 

Each walker will carry a 

named poppy cross, one for 

each of the servicemen on 

the memorial. 

The 12-mile route will go 

from Warwick through 

Sherbourne, Hampton 

Lucy, Charlecote and Alveston 

into Stratford. Some

The Coventry and Warwickshire 

Chamber of Commerce 

is holding its 11th 

annual conference on Friday 

21st September at Stareton 

Hall at Stoneleigh Park. 

And the event will look at 

the role business plays in 

society generally and the 

benefits it brings to Coventry 

and Warwickshire after a 

national survey revealed that 

just 54 per cent of the public 

believes business makes a 

‘fair contribution to public 

services’. 

Louise Bennett, chief 

executive of the Coventry 

and Warwickshire Chamber 

of Commerce, said: “Big 

business has received a great 

deal of negative publicity in 

recent months and years 

because of a wide range of 

issues. At our annual conference—and 

in general—we 

want to highlight the fact that 

business is actually a force 

for good in Coventry and 

Warwickshire.” 

Once again, the Chamber 

has organised an array of 

high-profile speakers to talk 

at the event and it will be 

closed by Lord Digby Jones 

for the second year running

Volunteers are needed for the following roles: 

Voluntary Action Stratford-on-Avon District – Volunteer Drivers. Do you have the time, care 

and patience to become a Volunteer Driver? This essential service provides transport to 

hospitals, doctors and day centres, and is a lifeline to many people. An allowance of 45p per mile 

is paid for authorised journeys. 

Age UK Warwickshire – Befriending Volunteers. Volunteers are needed to provide support 

and companionship to older people experiencing social isolation in their own homes, committing 

around 2 hours per week. You’ll need a positive and helpful attitude, good listening skills and a 

sense of humour. 

Stratford’s Big 10K – Event Volunteers. Taking place on 9 September, helpers and marshals 

are needed to make the event fun and safe. The event will start and finish on the Recreation 

Ground. This year’s charity partner is Heart of England Community Foundation, giving grants to 

groups and projects in the community. 

Guide Dogs for the Blind – Volunteer Driver Co-ordinator. Work as part of a team to help us 

co-ordinate the driving requirements for various departments including the training school, puppy 

walking, welfare, fundraising and volunteering. The role will be based at the National Breeding 

Centre near Bishop’s Tachbrook. 

Chedham’s Yard – Volunteer Events Assistant. A former blacksmith’s and wheelright’s 

workshop in Wellesbourne, Chedham’s Yard is looking for a team of friendly volunteers with 

excellent communication skills to organise and deliver events on general public and special event 

days. 

The Shakespeare Hospice – Various Retail Roles. Volunteers are needed to help in the 

Stratford Furniture Shop on Avenue Farm, the Stratford Bookshop on Rother Street, the Alcester 

Shop and the Henley in Arden shop. Duties for all shops may include serving customers, 

housekeeping, sorting through donated stock and preparing it for sale. Also, volunteer van drivers 

and assistants are needed for the furniture shop.

petition to stop speeding 

in Sambourne is due to 

be presented to Warwickshire 

County Council 

today (Tuesday). 

Villagers fear that if 

speeding motorists don’t 

stick to the current 30 mph 

that runs through the centre 

of Sambourne, then it’s only 

a matter of time before a 

fatal accident occurs.

Villagers feel that despite

has been done so they’ve 

signed the petition to show 

their concern about the

Fire risk 

of oily 

towels 

A SERIES of incidents 

involving oily towels 

catching fire in tumbledryers 

has prompted Warwickshire 

Fire and Rescue 

Service to issue a warning to 

householders and businesses. 

Firefighters have attended 

several calls where towels 

used in leisure centres and 

beauty establishments have 

caught fire. 

People have been advised 

to wash towels at 90C, along 

with using a good detergent, 

if they might contain massage 

oils to ensure the oils are 

removed properly.

protection, said: “This is 

becoming an issue across the 

country which we do not 

want to increase in Warwickshire.

not been able to air dry them, 

but instead used a tumble 

drier. This has meant the oil 

has reached ignition temperature, 

causing a fire.”

was guest of honour at Warwickshire 

College in Moreton Morrell when 

students from the UK and abroad 

made final presentations on tourism 

in Stratford and Warwick and were 

presented with Rotary Youth Leadership 

Awards. 

The students from Poland, Italy, 

the Czech Republic, USA, India and 

the UK had taken part in the Rotary 

Youth Leadership programme, a 

week long series of activities devised 

to encourage young people to 

develop leadership skills and 

included a martial arts training programme, 

mentoring, sport and cultural

Hotel backs charity cycle ride in memory of young Katie 

A GROUP of 11 charity cyclists 

checked in at the Holiday Inn, Stratford, 

as they embarked on a 104-mile 

round trip from Newhall, in Derbyshire, 

via Nottingham and Solihull. 

The team completed the 71/2 hour 

ride as part of a fundraising campaign, 

of which the Holiday Inn is a 

main sponsor, in memory of threeyear-old 

Katie Peach who died from 

type B meningococcal septicaemia in 

December 2011. 

Katie, from Newhall, died just 12 

days after being diagnosed with type 

B meningococcal septicaemia in 

December last year despite the magnificent 

efforts of the staff at the paediatric 

intensive care unit at the 

Queen’s Medical Centre, in Nottingham. 

The fundraising campaign in aid of 

Queen’s Medical Centre, will culminate 

on 24th August with a 180-mile 

cycle from Katie’s home and finish at 

Peppa Pig World, in Southampton. 

Vet warns of 

summer sun 

risk to dogs 

A SOUTH Warwickshire vet is warning dog 

owners not to leave their pets locked in cars or 

conservatories during the summer. 

Russell Hall, from Avonvale 

Veterinary Centres, 

said that temperatures inside 

a car can reach 120 degrees 

within minutes. 

“Cars and conservatories 

can quickly become like 

ovens and an animal can die 

within 20 minutes from 

heatstroke—even if the windows 

are slightly down and 

there’s a bowl of water,” he 

warned. 

Dehydrated 

Mr Hall also advises 

against walking dogs on hot 

days. “It is much better that 

they stay cool with plenty of 

water. Breeds such as 

boxers and collies will not 

stop playing, even though 

they are dangerously dehydrated, 

and will suddenly 

collapse. Others, such as 

King Charles spaniels, 

Staffordshire bull-terriers 

and bulldogs are also particularly 

susceptible.”

Greek night marks 

new chef’s arrival 

THE Royal Oak, in Alcester, reopened its kitchen at the 

weekend after chef Matt Conway moved to the pub from the 

town’s Swan Hotel. 

On Friday night, Mr Conway announced his debut at the 

High Street pub with a special Greek night. 

New manager Jake Rider has been at the pub for three 

months, and reopening the kitchen is part of his masterplan to 

put the Royal Oak back on the map. 

Mr Rider previously managed a nightclub in Birmingham, 

but has had ties to Alcester for many years and is a member 

of Alcester Alauna Rotary Club. He said: “I love Alcester. It 

has an amazing community spirit with lots of interesting characters.”

of guild hall appeal

the first men to take part in the Myton Hospice 

Moonlight Walk next month.

walk on Saturday 15th 

September—in women’s 

dresses. 

The hospice, which is celebrating 

its 30th anniversary

to men for the first time – on 

condition that they dress as 

women. 

The walkers will leave 

Warwick Castle at 9pm and 

follow an eight-mile route, 

which will take them back to 

the castle via Myton Road, 

where the hospice is situated.

Fatal fire: appeal 

against letter 

secrecy decision 

THE Information Commissioner, Christopher 

Graham, is to be asked to overrule a refusal by 

Warwickshire Police to publish a letter from chief 

constable Andy Parker regarding the outcome of 

the Atherstone-on-Stour manslaughter trial. 

The letter was written privately 

to Cllr Alan Farnell 

(Cons, Nuneaton), the 

leader of Warwickshire 

County Council, following 

Cllr Farnell’s public 

demand for a police apology 

as a result of comments 

made after the trial by Det 

Supt Ken Lawrence, the 

man who led the £4.6 million 

investigation into the 

2007 warehouse blaze that 

claimed the lives of four 

firefighters. 

Supt Lawrence said he 

was “disappointed” that the 

jury at Stafford Crown 

Court had decided to acquit 

three fire managers who’d 

been charged with gross 

negligence manslaughter in 

connection with the fire service’s 

handling of the blaze. 

Cllr Farnell said it was 

“simply outrageous” for 

Supt Lawrence to have 

made these remarks and

demanded an apology from 

the chief constable to the 

three fire officers who’d 

been found not guilty. 

Mr Parker went on record 

saying that the police 

accepted the verdict of the 

jury, but his letter to Cllr 

Farnell was not made 

public. 

As a result, Valerie 

Ingram from Shotteswell— 

who took a special interest 

in the case—asked for the 

letter to be published under 

the Freedom of Information 

legislation. Her request was 

refused by the police. 

Among the reasons for 

refusal are the argument that 

disclosure would not be in 

the public interest and that 

legal proceedings are still 

continuing. (Warwickshire

sentenced at a hearing in 

December following its 

admission that it failed to
