FIRE service bosses in
Warwickshire are
bracing themselves for
tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s)
four-hour strike
by firefighters and
hoping there will be no
major incidents during
the walkout.
Yesterday (Monday)
Andy Hickmott, the
county’s chief fire officer,
told Midweek Herald that
the service would be doing
its best to maintain public
safety during the period of
reduced cover.
He said: “We will be
taking 999 calls during the
strike but we won’t be able
to respond to all requests as
we anticipate a reduced
level of cover. We have run
a number of exercises to test
our contingency planning to
prepare for the strike.
“Our focus will be to prioritise
calls where a life may
be at risk or if someone
needs to be rescued. Our
response must be to those
most in need of our assistance.
“We would ask the public
to make 999 calls wisely so
that only emergency calls
are made, but if in doubt
then they must not hesitate
to still call 999.
“We are asking the public
to take extra care and have
put safety information out
and this can be viewed on

Launch date for
Paris in London
A FORMER Stratford College student who has been
signed by a record label is officially launching her
group in London on Saturday.
Paris Tredell, aged 18, has joined a six-part harmony
group since she completed her Level 3 Musical
Theatre course at the college.
The group, called Ynfiniti, were signed to record
label VIAM (Voice in a Million) in May.
Made up of four girls and two boys between the ages
of 15 and 19, they are headlining a special launch
showcase at the Beck Theatre in Hayes, London on
28th September.
“We’ve got quite a few people and producers coming
to see us,” said Paris.
“It’s a 400-seater theatre so it is quite a big thing for
us,” she added.
However, the experience should not be too daunting
for the up-and-coming stars, who performed in front
of 14,000 people at Wembley Arena in March at a
charity event.

Members of the Fire
Brigades’ Union (FBU) will
be staging the action as “a
shot across the bows” to the
government in a dispute over
pensions and a change to
firefighters’ retirement age.
Yesterday Marcus Giles,
secretary of Warwickshire
FBU, told Midweek Herald:
“We still want to have a
negotiated settlement. The
doors are still open to talk
to the government. This is a
warning shot to say ‘Let’s
talk’.”
There are 400 firefighters,
retained firefighters
and fire officers in
Warwickshire. Not all of
them were due to be on
duty tomorrow. Of those
that are, Mr Giles said:
“Most of them are walking
out, but some non-FBU
members won’t be involved
in the strike.”
The strike will take place
between noon and 4pm.

Retired officer pleads not guilty to stealing £113,000 from police HQ

Date awaited for trial
A FORMER detective constable accused of
stealing £113,000 from the Warwickshire force is
unlikely to stand trial before April of next year.
Paul Andrew Greaves,
54, who previously lived in
Harbury, pleaded not guilty
at Warwick Crown Court to
the theft of a quantity of
cash belonging to Warwickshire
Police.
It is alleged Greaves,
now of Belvoir Lodge,
Carlton, Nottingham, stole
around £113,000 which had
been recovered in a police
operation. The cash was
being kept in storage at the
force’s Leek Wootton headquarters,
where Greaves
was a detective constable
working as a financial
investigator at the time.
Greaves is accused of
stealing the money at some
time between the operation
in June 2009 and it being
discovered missing at the
end of September 2011.
Prosecutor Simon Davis
said he and defence barrister
Brian Dean expected
the trial would last two to
three weeks - and the court
listing officer had said it
could not be heard until at
least March next year.
But Mr Davis said that
before then, there would
have to be a pre-trial
hearing to deal with any
legal issues.
And Mr Dean pointed
out: “He is a retired Warwickshire
police officer, so
there is also the issue of
venue for the trial.”
Judge Robert Orme said
the trial date would have to
be fixed administratively
but said it was unlikely to
be until after 1st April.
He said: “One problem is
the resource allocation for
the next financial year has
not yet been determined; so
we don’t even know how
many judges we will have
to deal with a long trial.”
So he adjourned the case
to a date to be fixed, and
Greaves was granted bail
with conditions of residence
at his new address
and not contacting certain
prosecution witnesses.

from a £60,000 grant
towards urgent
stonework and stained
glass window repairs.
The grant to St
Nicholas’ Church will
fund high level and
parapet stonework
repairs on the south
side of the nave, along
with re-leading to three
large stained glass
windows and the
replacement of five
stone pinnacles.
Now in its fourth
year, the grant,
awarded by
not-for-profit company
Wren, is part of a
national Heritage
Fund that helps to
protect Grade I
and II* listed
buildings.

Georgian style

be taking a step back in time this
weekend to the Georgian era when
the mansion was in its
heyday with ‘Capability’
Brown landscaping
the parkland and Robert
Adam busy re-modelling
the building.
Visitors will be able to
meet the Georgians who
will give them a glimpse of
what it was like to live there
in that era.

■ groups who do not have significant
reserves or other resources.
“This annual scheme is growing quite
popular and performs an important community
service for those who need computers.
People running charitable groups
find the computers very helpful for making
bookings and appointments, organising
work schedules and they can also be used
to help publicise future events.
“It’s good to see these items of equipment
helping important and worthy
causes,” said Amanda Wilson-Patterson,
localities and communities officer.

NURSES at Avonvale Veterinary
Centres in south
Warwickshire have been
undergoing training in special
‘crash team’ emergency
techniques.
So far, more than ten nurses
from surgeries in Warwick,
Kenilworth, Southam and
Wellesbourne have had training
on how to deal with sudden cardiac
arrest in their patients.
Practice manager Diane
Goddard said each ‘crash’ team
operated with four nurses, each
with a specific role in keeping
the critically ill animal alive.
This allowed the vet to concentrate
on treating the patient’s
underlying problem.
Veterinary nurse Louise
Horton said: “As with humans,
every second counts in this situation.
It’s a great help having
a team which can go straight
into action the minute an emergency
happens, and everybody
knows what their role is.
“In addition, we have all had
extra training in triage and
resuscitation techniques, such
as heart massage and oxygen
therapy”.
The first team has been
established to include night
nurses at the Avonvale Hospital
in Warwick.
This surgery provides round
the clock care for Avonvale
patients, and also out-of-hours
services for partner practices in
the area.
Senior director Anita White
said: “It’s great that by keeping
all our staff’s veterinary skills
up to date we can now provide
this sort of high level emergency
care for our much-loved
pets.”

Jail warning
on bike crash
A MOTORCYCLIST has been told
he is likely to be jailed over the
death of a woman who was on the
back of his machine when it was
involved in a collision in South Warwickshire.
Shaun Southgate had denied causing the
death of Amanda Wilson by riding his Triumph
Trophy motorcycle carelessly on the
A435 near Mappleborough Green in
March last year. But after more than fiveand-a-half
hours, a jury at Warwick Crown
Court found him guilty by a
majority of 11 to one.
Prosecutor Gary Short
had explained that the
charge followed a collision
between the Triumph and a
Renault Clio at about
9.30pm on 31st March.
Both vehicles were travelling
south on the A435 at
Gorcott Hill towards Mappleborough
Green at the
time.
The motorbike clipped
the offside rear wing of the
Clio, causing Southgate to
lose control, and both he
and his passenger came off
the machine.
Southgate and Miss
Wilson, who was in her 30s
and from Redditch, were
both rushed to hospital
where she died from her
injuries in the early hours of
the following day.
Southgate, 44, of Valley
Road, Wellingborough,
Northants, also suffered
serious injuries in the crash.
His barrister Toby Long
said it was accepted he was
driving the motorbike and
that there was a crash, but
because of his injuries his
recollection of the events of
that day were not particularly
good.
But Mr Long argued that
there was no evidence that
Southgate’s driving fell
below the standard of a
careful and competent
driver in the moments
leading up to the crash.
After the jury returned its
verdict, Mr Long submitted
that the judge would be
assisted by a pre-sentence
report and possibly by a
psychiatric report.
He pointed out: “It has
been apparent that the collision
had a profound effect
on him. It has altered his
life to a dramatic extent.”
Judge Sylvia de Bertodano
responded: “Custody
is by far the most likely outcome.
“But it has made a great
difference to Mr Southgate’s
life as well, so I will
adjourn for a pre-sentence
report.”
Granting Southgate bail,
Judge de Bertodano told
him: “I am not going to sen-

are many areas of your life which have

“Please do not allow that to raise any
false hopes. It is the kind of case where a

No jail for man who groomed girl, 15

A FARRIER who spent the
night at a Warwick hotel with a
15-year-old South Warwickshire
girl who had climbed out
of her window to meet him has
been ordered to take part in a
sex offender’s programme.
Simon Creedy had pleaded guilty
at Warwick Crown Court to charges
of sexual grooming and sexual
activity with the south Warwickshire
girl.
Creedy, aged 35, of New Street,
Queniborough, near Leicester, was
given a community sentence with
three years supervision and was
ordered to take part in a three-year sex
offender’s treatment programme.
He was also ordered to register as a
sex offender and made subject to a
sexual offences prevention order banning
him from having unsupervised
contact with any child under the age
of 16 without the consent of the
child’s parent.
Prosecutor Sophie Lomas said
Creedy met the girl through his job as
a mobile farrier.
Although he knew she was 15, they
began to see more of each other and
she occasionally went with him when
he was working in other areas.
“The relationship developed from
there and became physical.”
Then in June, after sneaking out of
her window when she was supposed
to be ‘grounded,’ the girl met up with
Creedy who took her to the Premier
Inn hotel in Warwick where he
booked a room.
When she was discovered missing
from her room and did not return that
evening, she was reported missing.
The police carried out inquiries
throughout the night, including
sending a number of text messages to
the girl and at 5.30 in the morning she
replied and told them where she was.
Officers went to the hotel where
they arrested Creedy and took the girl
home. At first she did not want to talk
to the police, but later disclosed that
they had both been naked at the hotel
and had engaged in mutual sexual
activity, although they did not have
intercourse.
Creedy’s phone was
analysed and it was found
that he and the girl had
exchanged sexually explicit
text messages. But when he
was interviewed Creedy,
who said his partner was
pregnant with their child at
the time, claimed the messages
were sent in jest and
denied any sexual contact
had taken place with the
girl, added Miss Lomas.
Told by the judge that in
view of Creedy’s background,
his early guilty plea
and the circumstances of the
case, he would follow the
recommendation in a presentence
report, Jamie
Strong, defending, said:
“That foreshortens what I
would have to say.”
Judge Robert Orme, who
also ordered him to pay
£500 costs, told Creedy:
“You are clearly very distressed
about all of this; and
you have every reason to be
because you behaved very
irresponsibly and committed
two very serious
offences.
Older
“The law is there to protect
persons under 16, but it
has to be acknowledged that
your victim was older than
many of those children who
are the victims of offences
which come before the
courts.
“If she had been any
younger, there is no question
that you would have
been going to custody. You
are not going into custody
because there is a sensible
alternative way of dealing
with you.
“I can see no good
coming of locking you up
and depriving you of your
livelihood and effectively
ruining your life.
But by making the order I
do, I am not seeking in any
way to play down the seriousness
of what you did.”

SHREWLEY PUB OPEN UNDER NEW CONCEPT
FOLLOWING REFURBISHMENT
The Durham Ox pub in Shrewley has benefited from a refurbishment
and is now open as an Old English Inn.
THE DURHAM OX, a country pub and restaurant, is
situated between the railway and the motorway. Built
in the 18th century, the pub supplied beer to the
navvies building both the nearby canal and railway.
The name is said to derive from a famous beast of that
name which was exhibited at local cattle shows, and
is portrayed on the pub’s sign.
Once well known for its Marrow Sunday post harvest celebration, steam fair, flower
and produce competition and auction, The Durham Ox has been refurbished over
the last few months and has now re-opened as an Old English Inn.
The 16th Century pub on Shrewley Common has been refitted inside and out.
Inside, improvements have been made to the décor, toilets and furnishings. Outside
the sizable back garden has been landscaped with improved facilities for customers
and their families.
Set within some of England’s most historic buildings, Old English Inns are a group
of cosy and unique inns, pubs and hotels, each one full of character and heritage.
Since moving to Old English Inns, more than 15 new local jobs have been created
at the Durham Ox.
Experienced local landlord Andy Roberts is the new manager behind the bar at the
Durham Ox and runs the pub with wife Katy. He said “The Durham Ox is a beautiful
historic pub. All the improvement work has modernised the facilities but remained
very sympathetic to the character of the building. Inside customers will be much
more comfortable and notice more space has been created.”
The pub has a large garden and investment has been put in to maximising the space.
Andy commented “Our outdoor eating area,
the Little Ox, has had a massive upgrade.
Customers will be able to order food and
drink from within the Little Ox and the
garden has its own toilet facilities, so they
need not come inside at all, something
they might be keener to avoid when the
weather is good!
We also have a new marquee in the
grounds where we can offer competitive
wedding functions including a “Grand
Wedding” for just £999, and most family
celebrations!”
The substantial garden also now has new children’s play equipment, Andy said
“We are a family-friendly pub, with a great new food menu and a really good range
of drinks, including real cask ale. Katy and I are very proud to be running the pub
and look forward to welcoming in customers old and new.”
The Durham Ox serves good quality pub food, with many main meals starting at
just £5.95 and 3 courses for £9.95. During the school holidays children eat for free,
and the pub also runs a “Golden years” menu during the week offering mature
customers a 3 course meal for £6.75 from 12 until 5pm during the week.

Action on troubled families
A BOLD new scheme
has seen Warwickshire
County Council and its
partners turn around the
lives of 46 troubled
families, reports Ron
Westrich.
The success means:
■ children are back in
school where they were previously
playing truant or
excluded
■ high levels of youth
crime and anti-social behaviour
are down
■ adults are getting off
benefits and into work
■ the costs to local public
services and the burden on
the taxpayer are being cut.
The council has also now
identified more than 900 of
the hardest to help families
who will be targeted for
intervention.
More than 400 families
are already being worked
with and the scheme is on
track to meet the local
authority’s target of turning
around 805 families in the
county by April 2015.
Prime Minister David
Cameron applauded the
county’s success and said:
“I am determined we help
people to get on in life
including those families
where things may be going
wrong.
“For some, that starts
with attending school every
day, staying out of trouble
with the police and taking
practical steps towards
work, just as other families
do.
“Every month, more and
more of the most troubled
families are getting help to
deal with these issues headon
in Warwickshire.
“That is good for those
families, your community

(iii) It is the responsibility of the

check the first insertion of any series

responsibility for the repetition of

limited to text, artwork and

(9) The placing of an order by an advertiser, or
an advertising agency on behalf of a client,
constitutes an assurance that all necessary
authority and permission has been secured
in respect of the use in the advertisement(s)
of pictorial representations of (or
purporting to be of) living persons, and of
references to the words attributed to living
persons.
(10) The advertiser’s artwork, film and all other
property is held at the advertiser’s risk and
should be insured by him against loss or
damage from whatever cause. The
publisher reserves the right to destroy
without notice all artwork, film and other
property which has been in his custody for
six months from the date of its last
appearance in an advertisement unless the
advertiser has given instructions to the
contrary.
(11) Notice of cancellation will not be accepted
by telephone.
(12) (i) Every endeavour will be made to
forward replies to box numbers to
the advertiser as soon as possible
after receipt by the publisher, but the
publisher accepts no liability in
respect of any loss or damage
alleged to have arisen through delay
in forwarding or omitting to forward
such replies (howsoever caused). The
advertiser authorises the publisher to
return to its originator any
communication which, in the opinion
of the publisher, should not be
